Tianna Ta Interview: Tackling Her First Olympia

IFBB Bikini Pro Tianna Ta shares a bit about herself and some tips on how she nabbed a sponsorship in the fitness industry. Tianna qualified for the Olympia at the Pittsburgh Pro and will look to make her presence known at the first ever Bikini Olympia next Friday. Check out the full interview on Bodybuilding.com.

Excerpt:

What advice would you offer women in regards to shooting and picking a photographer?
Research, research, research! When I started modeling, there was one thing that I always kept in the back of my mind: my morals! That will never change. I always researched a photographer before I worked with them, to make sure that I liked his/her style. Just because someone owns a camera, it does not make them a photographer. Just as someone who takes pictures to post on Facebook, does not make them a model. Credibility takes you a long way. I never wanted to and never will work with a photographer who has a bad rep. This industry is not as big as it seems and girls talk to each other. Anyone who has multiple bad recommendations, I will never work with, so ask previous models who they have worked with and how their experience was. Also, if you are looking to shoot with someone, ask the photographer to send you their release before hand so you can read it. It has never happened to me, but I know girls who were given releases after they shot with a photographer, and if they didn’t sign it, the girls would not receive their pictures. So don’t let them waste your time, and don’t waste theirs!

Nicole Nagrani – The IFBB’s Youngest Bikini Pro Heads to the Olympia

I caught up with Nicole Nagrani days before heading to the first ever Bikini Olympia. Find out how the youngest IFBB Bikni Pro (only 18) juggles dieting, training and an accelerated Med Program. She’s not your average 18 year old.

Excerpt:

Some people say girls should be 18 or older to compete in the bikini division. Do you agree?
I have to say that I am neutral on this topic. Personally, I competed in teen figure before 18. Since Bikini is a relatively new division, I don’t think people actually realize that Bikini athletes train as hard as the other athletes in the bodybuilding industry. I know I work just as hard as my mother, if not harder and she is a figure competitor. The subject of being young and competing in this division only becomes an issue because of the stereotype that comes along with it. People think it’s just pretty girls strutting around the stage, but it’s really not. I think people need to look at this division as a sport, instead of a pageant, and then when it comes to age it really will not be such a controversial issue because people will realize that it’s girls walking around the stage showing off their hard work and not just being flirtatious posers.

Hardbody Hot Seat with IFBB Bikini Pro Zara Pineda-Boorder

Zara Pineda-Boorder was a relative unknown a month ago but now she’s making waves in the bikini division. Zara took home top honors at the 2010 IFBB North American Championships in the bikini division. She’s wasting no time getting into the mix of the IFBB Pro League. Zara will make her debut this weekend at the IFBB Detroit Pro. Get to know a bit more about Zara and what it’s like competing in Canada vs the United States.

Name:
Zara Pineda-Boorder

Born in:
Manila, Philippines

Currently live in:
Toronto, Canada

Occupation:
Contest Posing Coach, Fitness Trainer, Real Estate Entrepreneur

How many bikini shows have you competed in before the North Americans?
I did 2 National Canadian Shows – CBBF Natural Physique Championships (2010, April) placed 2nd & CBBF Canada Nationals (2010, Aug) placed 4th.

What’s the biggest difference between the two when it comes to diet and training?
When I trained for figure, my goal at the time was to bring up my upper body. I trained to make my back, arms shoulders bigger and to improve the shape of my legs. I worked on that for a few years until I felt satisfied with my overall physique change. When I switched to Bikini, I had to streamline my physique this time and make everything tight. I was used to doing 2 cardios, 7 days a week, along with 5 days a week strength training. So for Bikini, I eased back a little on the cardio (so I don’t lose my curves) and I focused more on full body circuits 4 days a week and cardio 2x a day but not for as long.

With diet, I basically kept it the same. I eat 90% organic, and have been eating this way for the past 5 years. It’s important that I get the most antibiotic free, preservative free, and non-gmo or hormone grown foods. I eat lots of wild caught fish, and grass fed, free range chicken and beef and eggs. I have fruits and veggies and I love, love love hemp oil. That’s basically my diet… plus some almonds and buckwheat rice cakes for snacks.

Why the switch from figure to bikini?
Although I loved competing in figure, I felt good about switching to Bikini when it was introduced and I did every Bikini competition within the CBBF/OPA stream, to qualify for Nationals. I think it suits my personality better and I placed 1sts and 2nds at regional and provincial shows leading up to the National shows.

Was it hard to come back to competing after taking a break?
I had a nice relaxing time when I took a break from competing and I’m grateful to have had that time with my husband to travel with him and his work adventures. During that time I also penned a 400 page novel, co-owned a gym in Makati, Philippines, got married, studied Russian, in Moscow and relaxed on my diet and ate as I pleased.
Coming back to the stage was thrilling. It was a two year break and my body responded well and craved the intensity of 7 day a week training again. I was happy to be back. And when Bikini came, I was even happier.

What’s the biggest difference between competing in Canada and the United States?
In Canada, Pro Cards aren’t awarded as often as in the United States. Exposure for IFBB stream competitions aren’t as mention in Canadian Media Magazines, as are the lesser known Federations that are present in Canada. Media mags seem to be tied to these claimed “Natural” shows more than the IFBB Pro-status granting Federation. I think appealing to the masses with these federation’s amateur shows, only waters down the competition and subsequently, the athlete’s true competitive spirit for the sport itself, is lost to the glam that most of their competitors, only compete for. I might get flack for that, but I only see it that way so I’m not gonna overlook that and speak against it.

There are only a couple of opportunities to turn pro in Canada. Do you get any push-back or negativity when you compete for a pro card in the States?
No, I didn’t get any negativity when I requested my letter for the North Americans. I was actually qualified to do this show after competing at the National Natural’s in April. I was told that the States would “love me” and I guess winning the overall and my pro card in Cleveland, proved that theory right. I just always thought that Canada was still a bit too reserved for my personality on stage… so while, I did and placed well and mainly in the top 3 at my previous shows, I was just a little bit “more” on stage for them to know what to do with me. hahaa…but I felt right at home on the American stage :)

Do you think the media in Canada gives women a fair shake when it comes to publicity?
There are way too many Canadian Female athletes that are so under-rated; from bodybuilding, fitness, figure and bikini. I think the proof is in the pudding, when most of the females featured in the Canadian mags compete for fame and not for the sport. Some females want only this and that saddens me. I don’t care for being in a magazine because of anything else than being a winning, consistent athlete in the sport. But that’s just me.

Do you find it difficult to get the same amount of exposure as the American competitors?
I already knew that Americans get more exposure in entertainment/fitness industry than Canadians. I’ve learned that over the years so I know now how to handle it.

Why the IFBB over other organization?
When I used to read the fitness magazines, I admired girls like Jenny Worth, Monica Brant, Julie Wallis and Dale Tomita.

You were “unknown” to most in the United States, yet took home top honors at the 2010 North American Championships. Do you feel you’d get the same exposure had you not competed in that show?
I know that I wouldn’t have had any exposure had I not come to Cleveland for the NA’s. My goal was to get my IFBB Pro status and I just did what I had to because, no one was going to hand me my win or my exposure in Canada. I really felt I stuck to what I really knew I could achieve, and didn’t stop until I did.

You’re wasting no time getting into the big leagues, what made you decide to jump into the Detroit show?
I’m doing as many shows as I can til the end of the competitive season 2010. I’ll take a break during the holidays and hibernate. But I feel like I just can’t stop now. I’ve come too far to get here so this is where I can grow as a competitor and compete with the best of them. It’s what I’ve always wanted to attain so I’m going for it!

When you’re not eating and training what might someone find you doing?
I love nothing more than traveling, and spending time with my close family and friends. I also invest in real estate with my husband and enjoy that as well.

How important has it been to have a supportive husband?
We support each other and it has always been that way in our relationship. We’ve been together 10+ years, and married for 5, so he’s been with me since the beginning of my competitive career and through the highs and lows with me. When I’m able to travel with him and his work (film business) I do and support him and when he can be
there for my competitive schedule, he’s always there. There are times when our schedules don’t sync up, but we’re there more than not. This is soo important in any relationship and without the total support, it’s difficult to succeed in the relationship and in the competitions.

What advice do you have for other Canadian women when it come to competing?
Do what’s in your heart no matter how much work you need to put into it and how much you need to sacrifice year after year, because when you finally reach your goal, it feels soo sweet!! Trust me!

Anyone you’d like to thank?
Everyone who has always supported what I do day in and day out.

How can people find you or find out more about you?
New website coming out soon, soon. FaceBook (search my name) is my place of dwelling until my new site comes out, but feel free to browse my outdated website in the meantime. lol :)

Thanks Zara and all the best this weekend!

Meet IFBB Bikini Pro Brooke Mora

This weekend Brooke Mora will make her IFBB Pro debut. She earned pro status at this year’s NPC USA and is wasting not time jumping into the big leagues. Brooke is considered by many, myself included, to be a top contender at this weekend’s IFBB Tournament of Champions. Despite being carb depleted, she joined us in our Hardbody Hot Seat and shared a bit more about herself.

Name: Brooke Mora

Currently Reside in: Los Angeles, CA

Born Raised in: Sylmar, CA

Occupation: Director DVD/Blu-Ray Production

How did you get into directing DVD/Blu-Ray Production? I was just given the opportunity through a friend that was looking for someone to help his department. I went in not knowing a thing and 10 years later… came out a wizz-kid! lol (kinda)

July 2nd your birthday? Yes

One day away from a REALLY COOL birthday – mine’s the 3rd. We should celebrate next year!!!

Did you play any sports in high school?
Varsity Softball and Cheerleading. Yes, cheerleading is a SPORT! haha!

Are you you a girly-girl or tomboy?
Honestly, I’m the perfect mix of both. I love to throw on a sexy dress, heels and get all dolled up for a fun night out, but I can just as easily throw a mean spiral in a friendly game of two-hand touch. Well maybe not so friendly… I am very competitive!!!

How did you get started with competing in bikini? Well, I’ve always been active and athletic. I have done 3 triathlons and have always been comfortable in the gym, but it wasn’t until my friend Beatrice Andrade (fellow NPC Bikini competitor) suggested I really train hardcore for a competition. I owe it all to her. Being new to the world of competition I just thought you had to be really “buff”.  But Bee informed me that there was a new division called Bikini.  Being that I love a challenge, very competitive and love the stage, I said “OMG, I’m in.”  Bee got me in touch with her trainer IFBB Bikini PRO Michele D’Angona and I signed up with her on the spot. The rest is history!!!

What’s your favorite part of a triathlon? Well, biking was my favorite because it was my easiest with these thunder thighs.

What’s your favorite part about competing?
My favorite part about competing is being on that stage, feeling confident knowing that all of your training and dedication has paid off! It has truly changed my life!

What’s the biggest misconception you hear from people when you tell them you’re a bikini pro? They usually say but you’re not that buff… lol! Then I have to go into this long explanation. lol!!

You recently shot with Muscle & Fitness – how did that go? Yes, I shot for the Muscle & Fitness HOTBOD spread set to come out in the December 2010. issue  The M&F team was a complete pleasure to work with.  It was so relaxing and comfortable. I felt I could really let myself shine for the camera. Photographer John Russo was amazing. Leith O’Leary and Chris Hobrecker of Muscle & Fitness were so accommodating, the absolute best!!  Keep your eyes open for my issue on stands in DECEMBER!!!

How was it different from other shoots you’ve done? Well, I would have to say that everyone was so professional and organized.  They knew exactly what they wanted and gave me great direction. I wasn’t waiting around for hours. It was awesome!!

Did you do anything different for your pro debut then other shows? Being that is it a couple days until my pro debut I think you’ll see that I’m a bit leaner in my lower body come Saturday. I’ve also played around with different poses, so my stage presence will definitely be a bit more playful! ;)

Will you be downing champagne if you qualify for the Olympia? Ooooohhh ya, you better believe it! But only one night of celebrating is allowed because Olympia is only 2 weeks away! Watch your camera it might get wet from all the champagne being sprayed.

Where can people find more information on you? follow me on Twitter.com/brookemora or on Facebook.com/brookemora.

Thanks Brooke and Best Wishes in your debut.

Backstage with Ava Cowan

Hardbody takes you backstage with Ava Cowan before her IFBB Pro debut. Ava shares insight on a number of things before going on stage. She ended up narrowly missing out on an Olympia qualification by placing 4th last night.

Thanks to Mark Mason for manning the camera.

Jessica Paxson-Putnam Switches to Bikini

I caught up with one swimsuit cover model and IFBB Pro, Jessica Paxson-Putnam to get the scoop on why she’s switching to bikini. Jessica is one of a few women who have decided to hang up their figure suits and give the new bikini division a try. Here’s what she had to say…

jess-bikini

You’ll be competing in Jacksonville again this year but in bikini – why?
I have been competing in figure since ’04 and have loved every minute of it, but when I heard about the new bikini division I couldn’t help but get excited. I have watched from the sidelines and I like what I have seen! I was ready for a change and just wanted to try something fresh, new, and exciting!

Has it been easier to prep for bikini vs figure?
Honestly, for me it hasn’t been. I’ve still had to diet and train just as hard. Getting in shape doesn’t come easy for me, so prepping for bikini really wasn’t easier at all.

What have you changed in your prep – training/nutrition wise?
My trainer (Mike Davies) and I have added more boot camp workouts, running, plyos, sprints etc.., which has been really fun for me. When I prep for figure I can’t do a lot of high intensity cardio because I worry about losing muscle in my legs. In bikini they are looking for a more overall toned physique, so I didn’t have to worry about that when I was prepping. As far as diet goes, I have done a more protein/fat/veggie diet. That seems to work best for me.

You received an invite to compete in the Figure International but opted to not to compete. Will you look to compete in the Figure International next year or submit for a bikini invite?
I guess that will depend on how I fare in bikini :) . I would love to stick with the bikini division because I am having so much fun with my training and am happy with how my physique is looking. If I do well, I would love to submit for a bikini invite to the Arnold.

What’s one thing you bring to bikini that other women don’t?
Oh wow, well… I don’t want to sound pretentious, especially since I haven’t even stepped on the bikini stage, but I will say that I am very happy with my presentation and stage presence. I have a dance/cheerleading/gymnastics background… so I am a performer. I love being on stage and I feel like that shows.

Which bikini competitor stands out to you and is the direction you like?
I think all of the top women (who have qualified for the Olympia) are great! I love Nathalia’s sass on stage and think Dianna Dahlgren has a beautiful, marketable look.

How long have you been sponsored by Optimum?
I have been blessed to have been sponsored by Optimum Nutrition and American Bodybuilding since 2005 when I turned pro.

Favorite ON product?
I am LOVING the new Platinum Hydrowhey!

When the results are announced at the Jacksonville Pro, where will Jessica Paxson-Putnam read?
Well, of course I would love to be the WINNER! :) . Nobody trains for second place ;) , but we will see ;)

Thanks Jess. See ya in Florida.

Hardbody Hot Seat: Dina Al-Sabah Returns

We caught up with IFBB Pro Dina Al-Sabah two weeks out from her return to the competitive stage. In part one, she discusses her background on and off the stage. Find out how many degrees she has to her credit and how many different languages she speaks. Dina is one of the only competitors to compete in bodybuilding, fitness, figure and now bikini.

Stay tuned for part two and three from this interview.

Airport Interview with new IFBB Pros Nicole Nigrani, Kristen Nigrani & Joanne Murphy

While waiting to board my flight out of Newark, I caught up with three new IFBB Pros. The NPC Team Universe overall bikini Champ Nicole Nigrani, her mom Kristen Nigrani and Joanne Murphy. Joanne and Kristen both turned pro in the Figure Division. Nicole shares when her first pro show will be and who she is gunning for. She’s the youngest IFBB Bikini pro at age 18 but don’t let that fool ya, she already has one year under her belt in an accelerated medical college. The cool thing that has never happened before was she turned pro on the same stage and night as her mom. Check it out.

Raechelle Chase on Kiwi Teli

IFBB Figure Pro Raechelle Chase recently appeared on TVNZ, one New Zealand’s leading television companies, to discuss figure competitions. The mother of three looked great on the show and did a good job dispelling a few misconceptions from the rather clueless interviewer. The interview starts out with the host saying, “Now many of us confuse figure competitors with over muscly scary looking bodybuilders but it seems they aren’t that quite different.” This is a perfect example of how the “mainstream media” views the competitive fitness industry. Two points that stood out to me were 1)that diet is the most important part of how she looks and 2)competing is not lucrative but she does it because she loves it.  Check out the interview here.

Vicki Nixon Battles Back

Call it a comeback. The last time we saw IFBB Pro Vicki Nixon on stage was 2007 as a bodybuilder. The New Jersey resident will return to the stage next month but not as a bodybuilder. Nope, Vicki will take the stage as a figure pro. You may be asking yourself why figure? Vicki is lucky to be alive, much less compete at any level. In 2008, she was involved in a devastating car crash and has been battling back ever since. Vicki’s doctors said her competitive career was over. She didn’t get the memo. I caught up with Vicki to learn more about her journey to compete once again.

vickinixon

HB: Originally from?

VN: I was born in Memphis, TN.

HB: Currently reside in?
VN: I live in New Jersey right now and have been here since 1995 when I married a NJ police officer whose job was what kept us here. In October he retires after 25 yrs of service and we will move to our Florida condo in Palm Coast where we will continue to work part time as personal fitness trainers. He’s also a massage therapist.

HB: That’s awesome. Please tell your husband thanks for his years of service.

HB: Your occupation?
VN: I have been a personal fitness trainer on and off for 26 yrs.

HB: How did you get into competing?
VN: I got into competing around 1985. A friend of mine put a magazine in front of me at the gym with Rachel Mclish on the cover and Cory Everson was in the magazine and he said, “what do you think about the way this women look?” I thought she was stunning and had just enough muscle for my liking… he then said with my genetics and focus I could look like that too. Long story short 6 months later I was preparing for a show. I was 25 when I stepped on stage. That was the beginning of my very long passionate relationship with bodybuilding and the stage. I had found my happy place…the gym.

HB: In 2008 you were in a car accident. Can you share what happened and what injuries you sustained?
VN: On Dec 20th 2008 at 10:48am my husband and I were on our way (with a truck load of Christmas gifts, our 2 small dogs and 2 weeks worth of clothes) for a Christmas vacation. We were going to spend half our vacation in Hilton Head, SC with my parents and the other half in our Florida condo which is 3 hrs away from Hilton Head. Long story short, we had just gassed up and were getting back on I-95 South bound in Dunn, NC and as we went through an intersection a lady blew the red light and t-boned my side of the truck, I was the passenger. On impact the truck rolled several times and caught on fire because she was guessed to be going about 55 miles an hour. When the truck stopped I saw my hubby seemed to be ok and I was then in “save my dogs mode”. I climbed out and looked in the back seat where they had been and at that time I was screaming where’s the dogs?! My husband said that they were under his feet on the floor board of the drivers seat! That means they flew all over that truck as it rolled. One dog is 3lbs and the other is 6lbs and they are our babies, as we were unable to have children. In a nutshell I was in shock and didn’t even know how badly I was injured at the time. Since I saw the car coming I braced and the impact caused several herniated disks in my neck and back…with 25 torn labrums in my shoulders and terrible soft tissue damage throughout my body. Thank GOD we both had seats belts on! Both dogs were injured and had to be hospitalized, one for 5 days with a bruised liver and the other had a bruised sternum. I am still in therapy for my injuries but blessed to be here to tell about it and even MORE blessed to have muscle that saved my life the doctors say.

crashphoto
A look at Vicki’s truck after the 2008 crash.

HB: What’s been the biggest challenge for you since the accident?
VN: As I began to get better about 6 months after the accident I was able to use my weight training as part of my rehab. I just had to go VERY light. I was told that with all my injuries I couldn’t lift heavy again or I would end up making things much worse. So with good PT and rehab I have be able to work my way back to pretty good conditioning. There’s still the pain and daily migraines.. I feared being in a car again and my motorcycle. Not to mention my pro bodybuilding career was over or so the doctors told me.

HB: How do you mentally get back in the competition mode?
VN: I have been through so much in my life. It seemed that with all my injuries and issues at hand I began to worked even harder to get back into shape. I spoke to Kim Oddo (my trainer who worked with me after I got my IFBB Pro card in 2004 until my last bodybuilding Pro show in 2007 at the Jan Tana) about possible transforming to figure. I had tossed that idea around before back in 2004 right before I got my IFBB Pro card. I actually did 3 figure shows that SAME year and did well! But as luck has it, I won the overall at Team Universe in 2004 in New York! Kim basically said…why keep thinking about it… JUST DO IT! So here I am 4 weeks out from mt 1st IFBB Pro figure show! Doing the same show I won my pro card at. Kim and I started this transformation back in Oct 2009!! So at this point I have been dieting and training my butt off for 8 months!

HB: So it’s not a mistake that your name is on the IFBB competitor list for the NY PRO Figure?

VN: No mistake I am coming back to the stage as a Pro Figure competitor.

HB: What’s the biggest difference training for a figure competition vs bodybuilding?
VN: Training for figure is TOTALLY different for me than bodybuilding because I had the muscle but I had to downsize it and have more of a “toned down ” look as Kim says. So to take off what took me 20 plus yrs to get was so strange to me. I have to train with light weights and high reps…circuit style training, one exercise after the other with NO break in between and I do 4 times around with cardio after each circuit! Then I was up to 80 mins a day of cardio on top of the circuit training! So I am in the gym about 2 hours on circuit days and 1 1/2 the other days. Its like night and day how I trained for bodybuilding.

vickinixon2
Vicki on stage as a bodybuilding in 2007.
See more competition photos here.

HB: Will we see you got back to bodybuilding?
VN: If I ever wanted to go back to bodybuilding, my body would have to dictate that. At this point with all my injuries… it’s a NO. Herniations don’t go away and I am not into surgery plus I have bone on bone in both knee’s and large hole in my right femur. I need a femoral/knee replacement and heavy weights would KILL me and send me right to the operating room.

HB: Are you planning to compete in any other figure shows or are you one and done?
VN: I have the Europa show 2 weeks after the NY Pro and then we are moving in October. I will take some time off, reflect and see how I feel before I decide to do anything else. I will be 50 yrs young this September, so I will also be the oldest IFBB Pro Figure competitor ever! lol! This new journey is not about where I place. It’s just to prove to myself that I can compete regardless of what life throws at me, I missed the stage and I love the ladies I meet along the way, it’s like a big family in the IFBB. And its not over till its over:)

HB: Do you still train other people for contests?
VN: I will continue to train others for shows as I do now, I have several girls now that are preparing for shows, bodybuilding and Figure. When we move to Florida, my husband and I want to both do it as a Team, we also have posing classes where we train in Pennsville, NJ right now and between us there’s 50 yrs of experience. He’s competed as long as I have!

HB: Do we get a sneak peak at what you’ll be bringing to the stage as a figure competitor?
VN: I have no pics to reveal at this time. I want the stage to be the 1st time anyone sees me as a Figure Pro. :)

HB: Thanks for sharing your story with Hardbody. Where can people find out more about you?
VN: Thank you for your interest me and my come back. I am so excited and a bit nervous to be honest! The change from bodybuilding to Figure means so many different things and wearing 5 inch heels is one of them. Let’s Hope I don’t slip and fall! I do have a website that Colette Nelson and Ron Durkin created for me in 2004, it’s www.vickinixon.com and you can find me on facebook under my name. I have an awesome DVD documentary out about some of the adversities I have been through in my bodybuilding journey and there are many. It reviles the person behind the physique. So many people see us as a fit body and don’t really know what we have been through to get to where we are. I shared very personal issues about my life in the DVD. I’ve received fantastic reviews from all who have viewed it. Mike Pulcinella was in my life creating it for 2 yrs and hes become a very dear friend of mine in the process. My DVD is called “Beyond The Pain” and you can purchase it on my website in my Store area.

HB: Thanks Vicki and we’ll see you in New Jersey next month!
VN: Thank you So much for this opportunity to share another part of my journey.

Check out some Vicki’s competition photos here!

TV Interviews… Are You Prepared?

IFBB Figure Pro Raechelle Chase recently appeared on a New Zealand tv show to discuss the ins-and-outs of being a Pro Figure competitor. Props to her for battling Laryngitis and appearing on the show.

That being said… after watching this clip, I can’t help but wonder how well prepared women are before they go on TV for an interview.

The reporter did a good job of researching the industry and different divisions. He came prepared and asked a variety of pretty simple questions. He asked, what is a professional figure competitor ? I don’t know that people watching this would have a clue unless they were already familiar with it. When asked how it (figure) differs from bodybuilding, Raechelle mentions staying very feminine a couple of times. It seems that her response implies that female bodybuilders are not feminine. I don’t know whether that was her intention or not but it’s a perception many people do have, including fellow IFBB pros. The reporter went on to ask what is the difference between pro bikini and pro figure. Raechelle says, “to be honest I don’t even really know the difference between pro bikini and pro figure.”

rchase

Raechelle Chase on a New Zealand TV show.

She does do a good job of mentioning the magazine cover she is (or will be) on and that she’ll be reading a part for a movie role. Always a good thing to mention things you have going on and magazines love when you mention their name on tv.

I realize many my remarks may sound a bit critical of Raechelle’s appearance however I mention this to bring awareness to the topic of doing interviews. It’s not an easy thing for most people to do, especially on television. You work hard in the gym and diet your butts off, don’t belittle your efforts when it comes time to talk about them. Also show consideration to the other competition divisions when speaking to mainstream media. I’ve heard bodybuilders put figure competitors down during interviews and visa versa. Now that bikini is part of the IFBB, it’s a question that you may get asked. Often times less is more when it comes to a response. How many times have you been nervous, not known the answer to a question but you keep talking? We all have a time or two.

Again, I know it’s easier said than done but it’s something to think about before you do a tv interview. How would you respond to the questions Raechelle was asked and are you prepared to do a tv interview? Watch the entire interview here.

Interview with IFBB Women’s Head Judge Sandy Williamson

A number of people have voiced their opinion on the new bikini division. That’s to be expected. I’ve voiced my opinions based on attending nearly every NPC National bikini show and every IFBB Pro Bikini show (except for New Zealand). Most of the things I’ve seen written online are based on hearsay and not from people attending the pro shows. One “industry expert” recently commented on a bikini competitor’s posing as “crass” but based the opinion by viewing photos online. I’ve mentioned a few times that you shouldn’t base opinions of the bikini division on photos. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but consider the source and what they’re basing it on. There are still a few people who aren’t fans of the new division but that’s to be expected. Figure wasn’t well received when it was introduced.

After the 2010 Pittsburgh Pro Bikini competition I went straight to the voice who matters most… IFBB women’s head judge Sandy Williamson. Sandy addressed a number of things related to the bikini competition. If you’re a competitor or a trainer, PLEASE pay attention to what she says.

Sandy talks about suit choice, presentation and what type of physique the judges are (or should be) looking for. At the end of the video IFBB Bikini Pro Nathalia Melo joins Sandy and shares why she (Nathalia) is the look for the new bikini division. Sandy also stresses the point about the division is new and they are still working through the criteria, just like they did in Figure. As of today, this is where the division is at and how competitors should prepare for it.

A big thanks to Sandy for taking the time to do this video and to J.M. Manion for helping arrange it to happen.

Hardbody Goes One-on-One with Alicia Marie

Alicia Marie is no stranger to the world of fitness. She’s graced a number of covers, hosted a couple of tv shows and has been connected to a few celebrities. She nabbed her IFBB Pro card in the Figure division but this weekend she’ll bring her sassy ass to the bikini stage. It’s a pretty obvious transition but I caught up with Ms. Alicia Marie to get the inside scoop directly from her. Check it out!

aliciamarie

HB: I see you all over the place but where do you currently live?
AM: Los Angeles, CA – baby!

HB: Peeps want to know… Why the switch to bikini?
GOOD QUESTION! LOL! You see… I love Figure, but as a model AND because I am moving into being more of a ‘mainstream’ television personality, Bikini suits my physique in an attainable, “non-intimidating” way for people to relate to me and my programs. I am very tall for this sport — just under 5’10″. If I were to put on the muscle needed to complete my stature and physique for Figure, I might be walking around off-season at 160lbs (right now I am contest, 139, off-season, 145). That would just about kill my career off the stage. The plus side of it is – I love the stage theatrics for Bikini!! I am a natural HAM so the sexy walk and the ‘tude suit me just fine!!

HB: You a HAM? Get out. (note the sarcasm)

HB: What’s the best part of competing in NYC?
Steve and Bev have always had fabulous shows. Team Universe was always my favorite show as an amateur and coincidentally it is the show that I finally went pro in in 2008! I am originally from New York City so I get to go back home to Yankee country, see my family and do some (not as many as I’d like) of my favorite New York THINGS! Have to avoid the cupcake bar til AFTER contest….

I really never stress because I just like to have fun doing this, being a part of it and at the end of the day I feel so lucky to be up there with all those gorgeous and strong women!!!

HB: How do you eat healthy while traveling and being on the go non-stop?
Traveling and “on-the-go nonstop” just about describes my life PERFECTLY!! LOL I have to be super diligent and plan ahead like you wouldn’t believe. Not only am I packing food and supps, but I know ahead of time what the hotel is offering food wise AND if there is a grocery store close by… It takes planning ahead and not waiting til the last minute.

HB: What new projects do you have coming out or in the works that you can talk about?
I am FINALLY writing a BOOK! Very excited. It is basically THE book. Everything about everything in fitness and health according to ALICIA MARIE! LOL! My monthly column in Oxygen magazine, Ask Alicia, did so well and I get dozens of questions every month that I thought, it’s just TIME. So I am working on that like crazy!

BSN has me on the road making appearances…I love those!!!

I am doing some television things that I can’t breathe a word of yet — which I will tell you about first. Trust!

I am re-launching my website – with the same “look” but more user-friendly for me and for visitors! I am such a computer geek at heart. My boyfriend is a music and video producer so along with his things (ABC’s ‘V’) we just have fun making things happen. Maybe some more music videos down the pike…hmmmmm…. ;-)

I also would love to get an Olympia nod in Bikini…we’ll see what goes down this contest year.

I stay busy and that is 100% how I like it!

HB: Okay I need another cup of coffee after that question. Give me a minute.

HB: Aight I’m good. Soo…

HB: Do you use the Ab Circle Pro?
Who? Hell no. The Ab Coaster all the way, baby!

HB: Will you be cheering for the Yankees or did you switch teams with the Cali move?
I BLEED PINSTRIPES — YANKEES!

HB: No more Braves? I kid. I kid.

HB: You’re around a number of celebrities. Any celebs you were star-struck when you met them?
Madonna – YES! As for the ones that ask me out, NO. A lot of celebrities hunt me down because they want me to write them a diet and fitness “Red Carpet Ready” program. LOL

aliciacelebs
Alicia Marie hang’n with celebs.

HB: Will you be rock’n the wig you wore in the music video?
You mean in Jace Hall’s “I Play W.O.W” (shameless plug) – over a million views on YouTube!!

I thought about the blonde one I wore in the video, BUT I think I will have to do my Bikini Pro debut in a pink fuschia glitter wig. I think the judges might like that touch and connect with it.Ha!

HB: Which of your fellow bikini competitors do you like the look they bring?
So many!!! I have been looking at the stage pictures and I am astounded at how gorgeous and naturally toned and tight the girls look. I do love Jelena’s physique – she knows that.

HB: Will we see you on stage again in the bikini division?
EUROPA in Hartford, CT!! That is actually where I grew up — so many of my old (and not so old) family and friends will be there…hopefully ;-)

HB: You’re a BSN athlete and featured in a few of their ads. What’s your favorite BSN product?
This is a tough one because I live on my BSN supps. Atrophex and Lean Dessert Protein (Vanilla and Cinnamon Roll) are my staples, but the new N.O. Xplode NT (Evolution series) is edging up a few notches for me! It’s incredible!

HB: Thanks Alicia! Good luck and we’ll see ya in the Big Apple.

Hardbody Video Interview with Taylor Condren

IFBB Figure Pro Taylor Condren (formerly Gallagher) had an impressive rookie debut last weekend. Taylor placed fifth at the Pittsburgh Pro Figure contest and looked great doing so. She has nice structure and a very balanced physique. Look for her to continue to do well in the figure division this year. I caught up with the rookie before the finals were announced and she shares a bit more about herself. The 2008 Mr. Olympia, Dexter “The Blade” Jackson makes an appearance in the video and sounded a bit like Yogi Avidan when asked to provide some words of wisdom. Check it out.

taylorc
Mr. and Mrs. Condren.

Hardbody Video with Gen Strobo

Gen Strobo was backstage chill’n when I caught up with her. She’s headed to the Olympia later this fall but hear what other shows she plans to do before then.

Hardbody Video with IFBB Bikini Pro Sonia Gonzales

I caught up with one of the leading ladies in the IFBB Bikini division, Sonia Gonzales. I grill Sonia on her suit change, what she did different and what’s next in her competition plans. Sonia started running and attributes it to the changes in her physique. There’s no denying her body has come a long way and she’s worked hard to get there.

Brazilian Bombshell: Nathalia Melo Interview

Nathalia Melo is two for two in her short competitive career. I caught up with the Brazilian Bombshell as she heads into the Pittsburgh Pro looking to secure her third consecutive bikini win. Nathalia came to the United States as an exchange student knowing very little English and a dictionary was her only friend. She was a law student but decided it wasn’t for her. Now she’s pursuing new adventures and is proof that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to with a hard work and determination.

Check out the interview here
. Nathalia is also featured in the current issue of FLEX magazine. Pick it up and see some hot swimsuit shots of this rising star.

Hardbody Interview with IFBB Bikini Pro Alea Suarez

IFBB Bikini Pro Alea Suarez is one to watch this weekend in Pittsburgh. She shares a bit more about herself and what got her into competing. The proud mother of three, YES THREE CHILDREN, will look to improve upon her sixth place finish at the Muscle Contest Pro.

aleasuarez

Born in: San Diego, CA

Currently reside in: Austin, TX

Many people comment that you have a beautiful, exotic look to you…what’s your heritage?
I guess exotic is a good way to describe my diverse ethnic “melting pot”. In the reader’s digest version, I am a combination of Cherokee & Apache native American, Mexican, German, English, a sprinkle of French and topped with Castillian Spanish! The epitome of the American melting pot!

Occupation?
Owner/founder of TIGON Fitness, (Personal training, body transformation plans, and boot camps), and I work as a group fitness instructor for Lifetime Fitness.

How did you get into competing?
I had lost a good friend, Cassandra, a couple years ago to a pulmonary embolism. It was very sudden and she was a young mother leaving two children behind. I introduced her to fitness and had trained her and helped her lose 40 lbs. I had always expressed my desire to compete and Casandra always supported me and told me to go for it. With her passing, I realized that life is to short not to pursue my dreams.

How of shows you’ve competed in?
Pittsburgh will be my fifth show (3 NPC and my second pro show)

What were your thoughts after your first pro bikini show?
I was glad to get the first one under my belt. It had some amazing competitors and I feel blessed to have placed in the top 6. The first show gave me some feedback to work with and areas of opportunity I can improve on.

Goal for this weekend’s PA show?
It is a contest so I go into every competition for the win! I work hard to bring my best to each show but I truly enjoy the process and competing. It is a lot of fun to be part of the IFBB Pro Bikini circuit! I have made many friends and the camaraderie has been a blessing.

What type of training do you follow?
I do a combination of weight & body weight only training, plyometrics, and alot of cardio. I have recently put running into my regime thanks to Adela. (Hated it at first but I’m now like Forest Gump! I can run for miles and liking it!)

Any supplements that are on your “must have” list?
L-Glutamine, Carnitine, (when not eating red meat), Udos (cold-pressed fish oil), and a good nutraceutical.

Do you have a trainer or workout with anyone?
I just recently joined Adela Garcia’s O.F.F. Challenge Team based here in Austin, TX. Adela has been instrumental in my recent training and nutritional direction.

What’s the biggest misconception out there about a bikini competitor such as yourself?
The biggest misconception that seems to be consistent everywhere I go is that a bikini competitor does not have to train or condition in order to compete. Training and nutrition is different between bodybuilding, figure, fitness and bikini yet all have specific looks that need to be dialed in for competition. Achieving that specific look is a science that requires diligence, self-discipline, time in the gym, and commitment. I work hard, train hard, and take my competitions very seriously! We’re talking about the the inaugural Bikini Olympia!

Good luck!
Thanks!

See more photos of Alea here.

Alea will take the stage tomorrow at the Pittsburgh Pro prejudging. For ticket information visit: www.garyudit.com

Round Two for Jodie Minear

IFBB Figure Pro Jodie Minear made her debut in Phoenix where she finished fifth. Not too shabby of a pro debut. Jodie has put the first time pro jitters behind her and will head to Pittsburgh for her second contest. I caught up with the Texan for a quick interview. Check it out.

jodieminear

Looking back, did you make any rookie mistakes in your pro debut?
Yes, I made some mistakes with my one piece suit choice and some dieting mistakes, but I feel like I remedied those problems and I’m ready for round two.

How has your training changed (or has it) since Phoenix?
Well I tweaked my cardio, I do more stairs and sprints so I kept more junk in the trunk while I was dieting down.

What changes, if any, will we see on stage in PA?
You will see a leaner me, without sacrificing any muscle.

When you’re not training what might we find you doing?
Sleeping, eating, watching The Office, or working, and in a perfect world I would be able to do all at once.. I wish.

Any supplements you’d recommend to other women?
I love 1st Phorm supplements and their 1-Dbº energy pills keep me trucking.

How did you get into competing?
Well it all started with my obsession with muscle and people with muscle at a very young age, two… kidding it was more like 7. I love working hard and being around inspiring people.

Which of your fellow figure competitors’ physiques do you like?
Oh boy so many, but my favorites are Heather Mae French, Christina Vargas, Erin Stern, Nicole Wilkins Lee, Felicia Romero, Jessica Paxson-Putnam, Kathleen Tesori, wow I could go on forever but what’s lovely about all these women is they are wonderful people as well as great competitors.

Do you work with a trainer for contest prep?
Yes I work with Greg Corriere out of One 2 One in Houston Tx, He pushes me when I need it and makes me laugh constantly which let’s face it builds ab muscles.

What type of workouts do you follow?

Every week I try to mix it up and really evaluate my physique and work on my weaknesses. Sometimes it more legs, or other times its my back, I double up on my weak areas and hope to turn them in to strengths.

The days leading into a competition you’ll likely be eating?
Well I’m doing all fish right now so I’ll be continuing that route till the show, I’m down to two goldfish and one angelfish… poor pets.

Sick and wrong. Glad to see you haven’t lost your whacky sense of humor. Good luck and we’ll see you in Pittsburgh!

Hardbody Video: Orlando Figure Pro Champ Erin Stern

Erin Stern was poolside doing photo shoots the day after her first pro win. We caught up with Erin to chat about her training, Godfather’s pizza and more. Check out what she had to say when asked who will win between her and Nicole Wilkins-Lee. Erin was the runner-up to Nicole at the 2010 Figure International and the two will meet up again on the Figure Olympia stage this fall.

Riley’s Return – Hardbody Interview

IFBB Fitness Pro Erin Riley will return to the stage this weekend after suffering a shoulder injury. I caught up with Erin days out from the Orlando Pro show for an interview. Check out what Rock’n Riley had to say.

erinriley

Currently live in:
Port Reading, NJ

Occupation:
I am a clinical dietitian at a hospital in Staten Island, NY. I work on an infectious disease floor, so its mostly medical nutrition therapy for patients that are very sick.

How hard is it working while training for a fitness competition?
This has been my first contest prep that has been split with a full time job. In one sense it makes it a little more difficult because of timing. For example, I typically work the 7am-3pm shift, so I had to adjust to waking up pretty early for my morning cardio. But, once you get into a routine, it’s really not too bad. On the other hand, having a job that is non-fitness related also helps me, because it keeps everything in perspective, and helps keep me more balanced.

For those that don’t know, remind everyone what injury you had & how you got it…
I started having shoulder pain a little before the 2008 Olympia, but it started out as just a nagging, bothersome pain….and unfortunately, I chose to ignore it, train through it, and hope that it would eventually go away on its own. It just continued to get worse as I trained for and competed at the 2009 spring shows. After the Orlando Europa last year, I decided to take some time off from training to give it a rest, but the rest didn’t seem to help at all. So, I finally decided to see a Dr, who in turn did an MRI which showed a torn labrum. Once the Dr got in there for the surgery, he actually found quite a bit of damage, including 2 large tears in the labrum, a rotator cuff tear, and a significant amount of bone and cartilage damage. So from what the Dr tells me, it was pretty ugly. He still can’t believe what I was doing on it in that condition. The injuries weren’t caused by one specific incident, I think just years of wear and tear from gymnastics that caught up with me.

Any effect mentally on you since the surgery?
The only effect it has on me mentally is that it has made me more aware of my body and has forced me to listen to it when it tells me enough is enough. It’s probably a good thing!

How did the injury change your training?
I haven’t been able to do as much volume with my upper body training, and my weight training workouts tend to be much lighter now. I’ve actually only been weight training about 3 times per week, and using the other days for rehab and routine work (and rest!). I am also not able to train/practice my routine as much as I used to, so I have been doing a lot more high intensity cardio to build my fitness level and endurance for the routine (not longer durations, just more interval/higher intensity programs). The change in cardio has also seemed to improve my physique, so its a win/win!

From the looks of the videos you posted, you haven’t missed a beat with your strength moves. Is there anything you can’t do now that you did before?
Well, to be honest, my shoulder is still not 100%. There are a few things that tend to bother it more than others, like pressing and some of the tumbling. But the biggest change has just been in the amount of practice time and repetitions of things I can do. I used to do a lot of numbers with my routines, and now, its pretty much go in, focus on hitting what I need to hit clean once or twice, and thats it.

You were often criticized as having “too much muscle” did the forced time off strip down some of that muscle?
Genetically speaking, I’ve always had a big upper body and I tend to build muscle very easily. I wasn’t sure at first, but now that I’m dieted down, I can definitely tell that my shoulders, back and arms are smaller than they have been in a long time. I think its a combination of having all that time off after the surgery, and also not being able to lift as heavy as I used to. But I guess thats not a bad thing! You actually can see and judge for yourself if you go to http://erin.gasparinutrition.com, I posted some one week out progress pics on my blog page. The only rule is, no one is allowed to laugh at my 5:30am morning hair do!! LOL

erinriley1week

What inspires you to use the hard core rock music in your routines?
Well, if you didn’t notice from the videos, the routine I’m using for Orlando is an “oldie” for me. It’s actually my first (and favorite!) routine I ever competed, (with a few changes of course!), so I’m really excited to get to do it again. I am one of the few competitors that doesn’t pick music based on a theme. I tend to just listen through A LOT of music and try to find things that I know I can perform well to, and that the crowd will get into. It always just so happens that its the rock songs that have the coolest musical parts for me to use! It seems to work for me…. Trust me, if I tried to do hip-hop dancing or something like that, you all would laugh me off the stage!

Will this be the only show we see you compete in or will there be others?
I haven’t decided for sure yet, as I still have to take things one day at a time, but I am hoping to at least do the Europa in Dallas, in August. When I started dieting for this show, I wasn’t even sure if I’d be able to get in shape in time, or be able to put together a decent routine (I was struggling with getting through 10 push-ups back in November), and here I am, feeling strong and ready to go. So it just goes to show you that you never know what you can do, or what will happen!

Anyone you want to thank or give a shout out to?
So many people have helped me get back for this show and I am so grateful to all of them. First and foremost my boyfriend of 5 years, Jeff, who is always there for me no matter what; Gaspari Nutrition for sticking with me through the injury…I am so lucky to be a part of such a great company; Mike Davies for believing that I could be ready for this show, even when I didn’t (at first!), and getting my butt back in shape; Mike Camp, my physical therapist; Jon Chipko for doing my “post rehab, rehab” and getting my shoulder strong enough to do what I do; Dr. Danielle Damelio, my ART specialist; of course my mom and dad for being so supportive even though they think I’m crazy; Maggie Keaveny for making me a beautiful new suit and routine costume; Sandi Stuart for being a great friend and helping to keep me sane during this prep; and I’m sure there are others that I’ve missed, but I know that I didn’t get here on my own and I am truly appreciative of all the help and support I’ve had from the people around me.

Thanks Erin. Good luck!
Thank you for the opportunity and for hosting such a great site!

Safiya Johnson Switches to Bikini

IFBB Pro Safiya Johnson achieved IFBB Pro Status at the 2008 Team Universe event in the fitness division. She went on to compete in the 2009 Atlantic City Pro Fitness where she finished 10th. Safiya was the 2003 NPC Teen National Fitness Champ and after years of competing in fitness, she’s decided to switch to bikini. I caught up with Safiya days out from the Orlando Show of Champions and here’s what she had to say…

safiyajohnson
Photo by J.M. Manion – courtesy of Safiya Johnson.

Where are you living? Columbia, South Carolina

Why the switch to bikini from fitness? I have been competing in fitness non-stop since the age of 16. I guess you could say it has been my passion/obsession for over the past 8 years. While I will always have a deep appreciation for the sport of fitness and its athletes, I feel like I am better suited for bikini at this present moment. As a fitness competitor I have always struggled to keep up on a muscular level. I am naturally a smaller petite woman and putting on size has not always been the easiest thing for me. I still have a lot of developing to do before I can become competitive within the sport and I dont mind taking the time to develop those areas. I am not saying that I am hanging up my dancing shoes forever because it is certainly in my heart to perform and being on stage is where I know I belong. I do however feel the need to take a step back and put alittle time into “ME” and certain areas of my life that need my attention.

I feel that bikini is a great opportunity to showcase my athletic physique in its most natural state. I am excited to see the various shapes and sizes within the division and am confident that I will bring a good mixture of fit and feminity.

Why debut at this show in bikini? Honestly, the timing was right. I would of loved to have participated in the very first pro bikini show but New Zealand just wasnt an option for me. I do most of the funding for my shows so I have to pick and choose wisely and the Europa Show of Champions seemed like a good show for me to get my feet wet in bikini.

Some people will say, well Safiya fitness is on the decline why wouldn’t you compete in fitness? Fitness may be on the decline in numbers, but certainly not in the caliber of athletes. The beauty about this sport and the IFBB is that there are different divisions and as an athlete, I have the freedom to choose. It is not unsual to see an athlete compete in fitness one year and maybe figure the next. I am choosing what is best for me at this present moment and right now that is bikini. Each year, as my physique continues to change I will reassess my place within the sport and make the best decision.

What can people expect to see from you on stage in Orlando? I am really excited about Orlando. Even though I have graced the stage many times, I have never competed in bikini. But not to worry…there will be no “deer and headlights” here, lol. It will certainly be different experience for me, but I am confident that I will rock the stage and have fun with it. People can expect to see a petite yet curvier Safiya than they have seen in the past

Good luck Safiya!

Monique Minton’s Pro Debut – Hardbody Interview

Monique Minton has graced the covers of FLEX magazine, Muscle & Fitness and Muscle & Fitness Hers over the last year. She’s no stranger to the fitness scene and she’s undoubtly one of the top fitness models in the biz today. This weekend she’ll take the stage for the first time as an IFBB Bikini Pro in the MuscleContest Pro. I caught up with Monique as she heads into Los Angeles for the first bikini pro show.
momdebut

How do you feel going into your pro debut?
I feel great! Very excited for my pro debut! I love competing and I like being on stage. I feel really comfortable there. I love the way I look and feel going into my debut!

You appear a bit tighter and on point for this show. What did you do differently to prepare for your pro debut?
Honestly, my bjj training has played a huge role in my appearance. You work a lot of your core, sweat and burn a ton calories during training! Another reason is my diet! I believe so much in nutrition…you are what you eat…or so they say! hahaha! Jeff Dwelle has changed my diet significantly for bikini, it has worked wonders for me! We have the same philosophies.

You do a lot of MMA training but that can leave ya bruised and banged up. When did you put that training on hold or did you to prepare for the show?
Well according to “some” people… wont name names… A.D. say two weeks no training before a show or photo shoot. That is so hard to do because I’m addicted to training! Sometimes I cut it out three days before but for this show with all my traveling I have only done techniques and no training! So I did good hahaha. Plus the cardio you get from training is so much more fun than treadmill! I’ll trade that any day! If I didn’t bruise easily, I would train up until the day before!

You recently signed with Muscle Tech – How was it working the Arnold for them?
Muscle Tech has been so great with me! I love working for them. At the Arnold we were sooooo busy! We had an elite group of athletes at our booth. The line was huge for all the bodybuilders. I enjoyed working the big 3 day event in Ohio. I’m looking forward to it again next year!

Some big fights this weekend in the UFC. Who do you want to see more – Carwin or GSP?
Carwin smash Frank Mir! hahaha We shall see.

As a bikini competitor what type of training do you do?
High reps, moderate weight. I still wanna keep some muscle. I do a lil plyometrics and some cardio. It was very hard going from figure training to bikini because I wanted to still lift very heavy and low reps!

How has your nutrition differed from when you competed in figure?
More carbs! A much happier Momo! hahaha a lil more freedom and variety in my diet ! A huge THANK YOU to Jeff Dwelle my nutritionist and my friend!

What’s more fun to prepare for figure or bikini?
Bikini! Because it’s a healthy lifestyle you can live everyday and plus you can still keep your curves. It works great with my bjj training! I can work more on endurance as well.

When will you be back on the mat grappling?
The day i get back from Culver City! haha class starts Monday 6pm! I will be there, ready and thirsty!

Goal for this weekend’s contest?
Fun! fun! fun! My goal is to enjoy life! Enjoy as much as possible!

Will Number Seven be Lucky for Tanji Johnson?

The fitness pros will take the stage in their two-piece swimsuits for this morning’s prejudging. Tanji Johnson is heading into today’s competition looking for her first BIG SHOW win. Can she do it? We’ll find out tonight at the finals.

How many Arnold’s will this be for you?
Seven

What inspired the Michael Jackson routine?
His passing…I wanted to pay tribute to MJ bc his gift as a performer has always been a huge inspiration to me. I was going to show this routine at the 2009 Olympia but decided to save it when I saw that Nicole Duncan was also doing an MJ theme. So, I am excited to pay tribute to Michael and entertain the fans with my passion.

What can fans expect to see different on the Arnold stage from the Phoenix show?
My physique will be tighter and I changed a section of my routine. I enjoy changing things up as every competition is an opportunity to showcase and have fun. And when celebrating Michael, there is so much “material” to choose from!

Many people think the show is between you, Adela and Julie. What will be the determining factor on which woman is announced the winner?
I think that whoever has the best physique in the judge’s eyes will win. Though Fitness has 2 rounds that count for 50%, I feel that the “sway” is determined by the best physiques and then a consequent ranking of routines from that pool of physiques. The winner will still have to have a strong total package so it will be a matter of who is ”most ON” in both categories. It will be an exciting competition as I anticipate everyone to be ON!

What’s your favorite Gaspari product?
Myofusion Chocolate Protein… I still cannot believe how good and smooth it tastes!

Gotta agree that stuff does taste great!

I understand you have a couple new DVDs coming out. Any insight on when those will be out and where people can find them?

Yes, the Competitive Edge series includes:
New ART of Posing for Fitness, Figure & Bikini
New Save Fitness Instructional DVD
Muscle Confusion Training DVD
Marketing Yourself in the Fitness Industry CD

These will all be available on my website, www.tanjijohnson.com
New website to be released later this month!

Thanks Tanji & good luck!

Adela Garcia Looking for her Third Fitness International Crown

Adela Garcia is heading to the Arnold Classic for the ninth time and the 2x Fitness International Champ is looking to notch number three tomorrow night. I caught up with Adela on the eve of her return to the Arnold stage.

adelagarcia

How many times have you won the Arnold?
I won the Fitness International 2 times.

Do you know who holds the record for most Fitness International wins?
I believe Susie Curry does, she won the Fitness International 4 times.

You bounced back and won the Olympia in 2009. Now we head into the Fitness International… Jen Henn is out. Tracey is out. Tanji was nipping at your heels in Vegas and Julie has a win under her belt already. What do you think is the difference in who is announced the winner on Friday night?
It will be who brings the overall package. Remember we only have two rounds and some competitors look better in the one piece. The one piece is gone so is only the two piece and 2 minutes routine. So, whoever brings the best package will be the winner but I promise you that I am going for that win.

Will we see you compete in any other shows besides this and the Olympia?
No, I want to focus and getting my business going and getting more girls involved in fitness. I have a lot of girls that I am training at this moment for fitness, bikini, and figure. I want to focus on them after the Arnold. I have 3 pro girls that I am training and I want them to know that I am there for them. I have a new website www.offchallenge.com and the O.F.F. Challenge team is going to be making an impact this year.

We’re pretty much guaranteed some booty shaking but what else can we expect in your routine?
You know my routines will not be the same without the booty shaking, but you can expect a fun and energetic routine… full of strength and flexibility and strength and more strength. This routine is fun, glamorous and sexy. I was actually was going to do this routine in 2008 Olympia when I got injured and just deci ded to wait to debut it at the Arnold stage. I am very excited about and it is going to be fun.

What advice do you have for the rookies competing in the show?
To enjoy the moment. Have fun, meet new competitors and people in the industry. I did not compete at the Arnold 2 years in a row and I missed a lot. Enjoy every single moment of the weekend and make it a fun and learning experience.

Who do you think are the ones to watch in fitness in the years ahead?
The girls that are willing to put in the work. I see Nicole, Tina , Camela, Kristina Rojas, Oksana, and a few new girls taking care of business in the future. I just see how these girls are willing to give it all to make it big in the sport. You either want something bad or you don’t. You have to be willing to make sacrifices in order to succeed in this sport. I know at times finances are hard and I struggled a lot when I first started. I am so thankful and blessed because God gave me a talent and I took advantage of it. As long of these girls put in their time, they are going to see that it will pay off in the future. They just have to be patience.

Do you miss not training for the 45-second routine?
Yes… But I still do it when I practice my routine. I use the 45 seconds to warm up and it really helps with my conditioning.

Good luck Adela!

Durkin Bounces Back

IFBB Fitness Pro Tina Durkin made a name for herself when she showed up looking her best at the 2009 Fitness International. Can she repeat her showing this year? Tina shares a bit more about herself as she heads into this weekend’s contest.

You shocked a lot of people last year with the physique you brought to the Arnold stage. What was the key to your success last year?
I believe it was rest, rehab and patience. I had to take about 6 months off from training due to my back surgery. I hadn’t dieted all year. I didn’t even start lifting serious until November. I think my body needed a break and time to heal. With that said, it responded great to the diet and workouts. I truly feel blessed.

What have you focused on since the Olympia?
I feel like I have so much I can improve on… I tried to really focus on my routine. I had to really be careful last year, not knowing what I could really handle. Also, I’ve been trying to work on my back side. During all the time off and surgery, I lost so much muscle and strength. I’ve been really working hard on my diet too. I get to nervous sometimes that I can’t eat… well, not this time… I got this!!!

What can fans expect to see from you this time out?
I have to admit, I’m not one to make excuses about things. Last year I played the routine round safe but I’m done with that. I’m healthy and ready to show my fans what I can do!

Do you miss the 45 second routine?
I do miss the 45 second. I felt like it was a great way to set apart the pros. I think everyone in the audience enjoyed them too. I liked the fact that we had mandatory moves, and plus it was only 45 seconds so it was easy to practice and perform. I am really bummed and will miss it greatly.

What do you do for your “day job”?

Well, I do lots of things:
1. Personal Training
2. Group Fitness Instructor
3. Zumba Instructor
4. Mom (most importantly)

How do you balance competing and your home life?
My family is very active in sports and fitness also. My daughter (6 years old) now takes gymnastics at the same location that I practice my routine. So we get to watch each other practice. My husband and I share the responsibilities with her and around the house so we can both get our workouts in. We are very supportive of each other and we make fitness/healthy lifestyle a priority.

Goal for the show?
My goal for the show is just to improve from last year, if that means better routine or physique than I’m happy… It truly is all about being happy and knowing you did everything you could to be the best you can be!

Good luck and all the best Tina!

Nicole Duncan’s Flying High

Nicole Duncan is has found her groove on the IFBB Fitness stage and she’ll look to continue her hot streak this weekend. The always energetic Duncan will be flying high Friday night in Columbus as she competes in the 2010 Fitness International. I caught up with Nicole days out from her return to the Arnold stage. Check out what she had to say.

How did you find out you were invited to the Arnold?
I was driving home from training at the gym and chatting on the phone with my dear friend Debra Lavette. She screamed, “OMG! The Arnold list is posted! Let me call you back.” And I had to scream, “No wait! Stop! Don’t hang up. I want to know too!” She got quiet but I could tell that she was reading through the names. She named a few figure girls and it seemed to take her forever. She finally got to fitness and actually skipped over my name. She admitted she was moving too fast and got scared that I wasn’t invited. Then she screamed my name and we both started screaming. It was nice to have all the training and dieting validated. I had already started prep as most of us do just in case.

How many hours do you practice your routine a day?
Well, it’s more like 2-3 times a week about a month out from the show. I sometimes train for 30 minutes and sometimes it’s 2 hours. I go into the gym to tumble and work on my skills. I have a key to the gym and the owners are like my extended family. A lot of my routine practice is visualization. I put my iPod on repeat and listen to my routine music while busting it out on the elliptical. I like to know my music and have a visual picture of every movement. I know people think I’m crazy cause I’ll start moving my arms and marking the routine.

You’ve got some of the craziest gymnastic skills in your routine – what’s your background?
I started out as an energetic kid who use to run down the hallway at home and vault over the arm of the couch. My mom put me in gymnastics at 8 years old and I was competing 6 months later. My coaches were all about teaching technique and up until high school I would never throw anything outside of the gym. I love that I can still do this stuff but it definitely is not like it used to be. It takes me a lot longer to warm up and as a coach I realize that I have picked up a lot of bad habits that are harder to correct.

You’re already qualified for the Olympia – does this make you try new things or play it safe?
Definitely not playing it safe! There are all sorts of girls waiting in the wings to steal the routine spotlight. I always try to keep it fresh, new and exciting from beginning to end. I’m not getting any younger but the competition is! I think that’s cool though. It keeps me on my toes. I want the audience to see all of our routines and just love the show! We are the best at what we do and we all should display that and give our very best at each and every show.

Goal for the Fitness International?

Man, I just want to go out there and have fun! Really! Last year I was sick and I had a hard time putting contest prep first and getting into the grove of everything. This time I knew what to expect and was determined not let anything keep me from enjoying the process. I like to workout. I like to tumble and perform. And I love hanging out with the girls and going through a show. So yes, the goal is to have fun. That’s it.

Any insight on what routine you’ll consist of this year?
I’m planning a little something different for each show this year. This show’s routine is all about dancing and having fun. I took my inspiration from one of my favorite tv shows. Without spoiling the theme (as you know us fitness girls like to keep you in suspense), I hope to have the audience dancing in there seats :-) . See you at the Arnold!

Good luck and Thanks Nicole.
Thanks Isaac!
