A Minute with a Photo Editor – What Type of Fitness Photos to Send

If you have aspirations of modeling, one way to get noticed is submitting your photos to a magazine. Many photographers will sell you on them submitting your photos to magazines and that’s great however the reality is anyone can submit photos. Each magazine works differently and not every magazine runs user submitted images. Many magazines have staff photographers and more of then not, they are the ones who will do the bulk of the shoots because they are on a salary.

If you want to be published in a specific magazine, you should shoot with photographers who get published. Your chances of being in a magazine increase when you shoot with a photographer who is published in that particular magazine. This also means published recently. The staff changes often at the magazines and it’s the photo editors, creative directors, editors and art directors who have input on who is photographed. If a photographer promises you a cover, that should be a HUGE red flag, unless they run the magazine. They may shoot a “cover try” however unless they have an assignment to shoot the cover, be wary. Even then you’re not guaranteed a cover. Covers can and do change minutes before going to press.

You will see photographers who are selling their services on work that was published in the 90s. Just because a photographer was published 20 years ago doesn’t mean they are still published. Ask to see what they’ve had published in the last year. A cover in 1994 doesn’t mean they still shoot covers in 2012. Look at the magazines you like and see whose name is next to the photo. That’s the easiest way too identify the photographer. If the magazine is legit they will credit the photography.

You can send your photos to magazines yourself. It’s a direct way to get on the radar of a magazine. It doesn’t mean you will get published or that they will even respond back to you but your chances increase if you follow the input below. The biggest mistake you can make is sending in overly photoshopped photos of yourself. Looking plastic in photos may be a good look for Barbie but it’s not for aspiring models.

We caught up with a photo editor and asked what would be the best photos to send to him/her for consideration. The photo editor’s name is printed in the front of the magazine (or it should be) and typically will have their email listed. If it’s not, you may have to do some hunting for their contact info.

Want to be in a fitness magazine? Here’s the type of photos you should submit to increase your chances of getting called back.

• Digital snaps, in focus taken with proper lighting (these don’t have to be professional).
• Contest and non-contest shots
• Full length, front and back double bi
• Abs shot
• Head shot, smiling
• Files no larger than 1 MB each

Note this is for a fitness magazine and what they look for in the women they use for fitness features. They are looking for abs, arms, shoulders and of course a good face. If you follow this input you will increase your chances of getting a call back.

Ultra Endurance Athlete Rebecca Rusch Featured in Nikon Video

If you’re at all familiar with the mountain biking world, you’ve heard of Rebecca Rusch aka “The Queen of Pain”. She exemplifies what a HARDBODY female can be and has done so for years. She was named one of Outside Magazine’s Top Female athletes in 2003 and has an impressive set of victories that goes on longer than the trails she rides.

Top photographers are often given models of new cameras before they hit the market. They’re typically used in super-secret fashion and there are only a handful of them (the new cameras) in existence. Nikon called upon top photographer Corey Rich to show off the new Nikon D4′s capabilities. He was given free reign to create whatever he wished. Corey chose three athletes, one of which was Rebecca. She shared on her website, “He invited me to be part of the video from Nikon launching their new D4. The only thing is that the camera was so super top secret that we weren’t allowed to tell anyone what the shoot was for, or who we were working with.”

Check out the video and listen to Rebecca’s message throughout the video. You know you’re a hardbody when you say, “a 10 hour race would be a short race for me.”

Video: Lolo Jones 12 Years for 12 Seconds

USA Track & Field star Lolo Jones is one of our favorite hardbody women to follow on twitter (LoloJones). If you’re not following you her you’re missing out on hilarious interactions with her fans. She may be a bit of a jokester but rest assured she’s all business when it comes to running hurdles.

Via Lolo’s Facebook page:
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Lolo was favored to win the 100 meter hurdles. In the final, she was pulling away from the pack when she clipped the 9th hurdle (of 10) and stumbled, breaking stride to drop her back to a 7th-place finish.

Imagine training for that one race, only to have one mistake keep your from it. In this latest video from her sponsor Asics, Lolo shares how she is battling back from a spinal surgery and determined to win Gold at the Olympics. As she says, she’s trained 12 years for 12 seconds.

“I’ve had time’s where I wasn’t number one and I fought and crawled to become number one.” – Lolo Jones.

Haywire Star Gina Carano Featured in GQ

Gina Carano has been thought of as the “face of women’s MMA” for years however she hasn’t fought in quite some time. She was an American Gladiator until the show was canceled. Gina’s appeared in Muscle & Fitness, ESPN BODY issue, Super Bowl commercials and definitely has a hardbody. If you disagree, let her know and see how far that gets you. Check out the “Satan” workout we featured a couple years ago to see Gina working out.

Actually, Gina is usually quite shy when she appears on the read carpet and in interviews but don’t let her coy demeanor fool you. Gina is a bad ass and her first film as a leading actress, HAYWIRE, looks to be a legit flick.

Gina is featured in Men’s magazine, GQ and it’s a pretty kick ass photo by Carlos Serrao. The feature highlights her MMA background and why she was the perfect for the role in HAYWIRE. Check out the larger version of the feature here. This is a great example of how hardbody women can be shown in classy manner and appeal to mainstream.

Props Gina Carano, Carlos Serrao & GQ magazine.

2011 Olympia Day One Photos & Recap

The 2011 Olympia has begun. Stay updated on here and Bodybuilding.com for complete coverage. Day one is in the books and now the action gets into full swing. Check out the photos on Bodybuilding.com.

DAY ONE RECAP:
The athletes had their meeting where they are briefed on what the weekend has in store, the schedule and how things will be run. Ron Avidan and I were on hand to snap photos and some women were very friendly, most were cordial and only a couple wanted nothing to do with having their picture taken. Part of this weekend and being a professional is having your photo taken whether you like it or not. When asked for a photo, one bikini competitor said, “I don’t want my picture taken. I don’t want any pictures.” Guess what sweetie, you can either pose for a photo or I will take one any ways. So this particular competitor held up her folder in front of her face for her photo. Nice job. Two figure competitors wanted nothing to do with being captured by my lense and didn’t bother to look up or acknowledge it was there. That’s fine. Again I’ll snap your photo and you can play the game despite your disdain for me or not. The majority of the women were delightful, smiled and in good spirits.

I mention the examples of not wanting to be bothered because at this level you are expected to be a PROFESSIONAL. If you come to meetings without your hair and make up done, that’s fine I get it but you know by now people will be there taking your photo. At Meet The Olympians some competitors acted as if they’d rather be stabbed in the face with dull pencils. You’re carb depleted, tired, hungry and smell like tanning.  get it but at the end of the day it’s about building your brand and interacting with fans. If fans stop caring, guess what no one will want your picture and no one will sponsor you and then what? You’re left sitting at an empty table eating cold fish and no one will care.

Aight so that’s my rant for the day. My hope is more competitors get past how tired and hungry they are and enjoy the Olympia Experience. Thousands of women would kill to be in that position. Check out photos from Day One here on Bodybuilding.com!
