New Olympia Qualifying Rules & The Hardbody Take

The IFBB Pro League issued the following Advisory Notice regarding qualify for the Olympia. This is a huge change in the competition and we will see a much, much smaller 2012 Olympia.

September 21, 2011

NEW OLYMPIA QUALIFYING RULES

After meetings held during the Olympia Weekend and following further discussions between IFBB Professional League and Mr. Olympia, LLC, beginning 2012, only the following competitors will qualify for the Olympia:

1. top four (4) in each division at the Olympia.
2. top three (3) in each division at the Arnold Classic/International;
3. top two (2) in each division at the New York Pro; and
4. 1st Place at all other competitions

The top four (4) in each division at the 2011 Olympia will qualify for the 2012 Olympia.

The remaining 2011 competitions are not affected.

The IFBB Professional League and Mr. Olympia, LLC may offer special invites.

Jim Manion
Chairman
IFBB Professional League

The Hardbody Take:

I have no issue with this as it applies to the men’s division. I think the male bodybuilders competing only one time a year hurts promoters and shows. I am not a big fan of this as it applies to the women. Why? Let’s say Erin Stern, Nicole Wilkins, Ava Cowan or Candice Keene decide to enter shows throughout the year. They are already qualified for the Olympia but if they win a show there will be no other qualifications awarded. That means we could see around 10 women total in the Olympia. It’s highly unlikely that they will enter the majority of shows in 2012 but there’s nothing stopping them. I think one person from every competition should qualify. That means if the first place competitor has qualified second should get the qualification. That would grant one competitor for each show to qualify for the Olympia. Awarding only the first place person and then opening the Olympia up to special invites is a little unsettling to me. It then opens up a can of worms of how they will be chosen, how many and who gets them. I totally understand and agree with the Olympia organizers wanting to cut down on the number of people qualifying for the show. Limiting the bikini, figure and fitness to just the winner makes me uneasy.

If the new rule were in place this year we’d see this line up for the Figure Olympia competition.
1. Erin Stern
2. Nicole Wilkins
3. Cheryl Brown
4. Candice Keene
5. Ava Cowan
6. Gennifer Strobo
7. Felicia Romero
8. Kristal Richardson
9. Courtney West
10. Heather Mae French

That would leave Alicia Harris who placed in the top six at the Olympia not even qualifying for the Olympia. Kristal Richardson and Heather Mae French did not compete in the 2011 Olympia. Teresa Anthony notched a win under her heels and would be in the mix. Courtney West finished tied for 16th, Felicia Romero was 15th, Cheryl Brown was 7th and Gennifer Strobo was 11th.

I haven’t done the breakdown on Bikini and Fitness but you get the idea. I think around 15 competitors for the Olympia is good as it’s intended to be the best of the best. We’ll see how this shakes out for the new year.

What’s your thoughts on the new Olympia qualifications?

2011 Olympia Day One Photos & Recap

The 2011 Olympia has begun. Stay updated on here and Bodybuilding.com for complete coverage. Day one is in the books and now the action gets into full swing. Check out the photos on Bodybuilding.com.

DAY ONE RECAP:
The athletes had their meeting where they are briefed on what the weekend has in store, the schedule and how things will be run. Ron Avidan and I were on hand to snap photos and some women were very friendly, most were cordial and only a couple wanted nothing to do with having their picture taken. Part of this weekend and being a professional is having your photo taken whether you like it or not. When asked for a photo, one bikini competitor said, “I don’t want my picture taken. I don’t want any pictures.” Guess what sweetie, you can either pose for a photo or I will take one any ways. So this particular competitor held up her folder in front of her face for her photo. Nice job. Two figure competitors wanted nothing to do with being captured by my lense and didn’t bother to look up or acknowledge it was there. That’s fine. Again I’ll snap your photo and you can play the game despite your disdain for me or not. The majority of the women were delightful, smiled and in good spirits.

I mention the examples of not wanting to be bothered because at this level you are expected to be a PROFESSIONAL. If you come to meetings without your hair and make up done, that’s fine I get it but you know by now people will be there taking your photo. At Meet The Olympians some competitors acted as if they’d rather be stabbed in the face with dull pencils. You’re carb depleted, tired, hungry and smell like tanning.  get it but at the end of the day it’s about building your brand and interacting with fans. If fans stop caring, guess what no one will want your picture and no one will sponsor you and then what? You’re left sitting at an empty table eating cold fish and no one will care.

Aight so that’s my rant for the day. My hope is more competitors get past how tired and hungry they are and enjoy the Olympia Experience. Thousands of women would kill to be in that position. Check out photos from Day One here on Bodybuilding.com!

2011 Fitness Olympia Preview and Predictons

Adela Garcia heads into the Fitness Olympia with a target on her back. She’s positioned herself as the one to beat since sitting out the 2008 Olympia due to a knee injury. Trish Warren will be absent from the line-up as she’s expecting her first child. Mindi O’Brien shared via twitter that she will be sidelined due to a nagging injury. Can Tanji Johnson bring a look that leaps her over Adela?

The rules changed to put the emphasis on the routines and I hope we see the judges stick to that change. If they do, and I believe they will, then we should see a top six that has some new faces in it. There will be some incredible routines performed on Friday night. Look for the Canadian contingency (Myriam Capes and Jodi Boam) to stand out with their incredible gymnastics and strength moves. The x-factor in the top six will be Camala Rodriquez. She’s has the structure to place well in the physique rounds but has been inconsistent with what she brings to the stage. I have her in the middle of the pack when it comes to the routine rounds. If Oksana Grishina performs a routine like she has in the past and misses the top six, expect to hear it from the crowd. She was out of the top 6 at the Fitness International which was the biggest injustice since her pro debut where she was tied for 16th, at least in my opinion. She won’t have the best physique on stage but she will entertain with her performance.

If Fitness has any chance at surviving and thriving like it once did the placings need to reflect the routines and not the physiques. Those of you watching the webcast at home, keep score of what routines you like the best and see if they fall in line with the final placings. Read my entire preview of the competition and where I think the ladies will finish. Sound off if you agree or disagree in the comments below.

Hardbody 2011 Bikini Olympia Preview & Predictions

Last year the Olympia added the Bikini division and we saw Sonia Gonzales crowned the queen. The division, in just its second year, continues to evolve. We’ll  see a number of new faces and hardbodies on stage this year. Nicole Nagrani has been on a roll and appears to be the one to beat going into the show. Jaime Baird has found her groove and has a string of wins heading into this weekend. Dianna Dahlgren brings a fresh face and a booty that is popp’n. Nathalia Melo when on her game brings a look that is tough to beat. Can one of these ladies dethrone Sonia this weekend?

If Sonia shows up like she did at the 2011 Europa Supershow in Dallas, we will absolutely see a new champion. If I was a gambling man I’d put my money on Nicole Nagrani, Nathalia Melo, Jaime Baird or Dianna Dahlgren taking the title. Some people feel you can’t just kinda beat the champ you have to knock them out. I think there are a few women who have knock out capabilities. Check out my Bodybuilding.com Olympia breakdown of the entire field and where I think the ladies will finish.

Will Sonia repeat at the Bikini Olympia Champ?

Fight Night: Round Three in the Figure Olympia

Men’s Professional Bodybuilding had Ronnie Coleman versus Jay Cutler battling it out for the Olympia title. Fitness saw Jen Hendershott and Adela Garcia go head to head in their duel. The world of Figure has its own battle brewing and round three goes down this week. Nicole Wilkins and Erin Stern will face off for the third time on the Olympia stage and they each share a win.

Nicole won the prestigious title in 2009 and upset rising star Gina Aliotti in the process. Erin finished 6th that year, her first appearance on the Olympia stage. In 2008, Erin had yet to compete a pro stage and Nicole finished in 9th at this event. Last year, Erin found her stride and beat Nicole for the Olympia crown. The two will square off for the third time this weekend. Despite the first time not being much of a battle between the two, rest assure it will be this time. Erin wasn’t at her best when the two faced off earlier this year at the Figure International and Nicole left Columbus with another first place check. Nicole gave us a little preview last week at the Tournament of Champions last week and she’s on her game. She came in a bit tighter than we’ve seen her and has added some muscle to her legs and delts.

There’s no disrespect intended towards the rest of the line-up but it appears fight night will come down to Erin and Nicole battling it out for the Figure title. Check out the preview of the entire competition and where I think they may finish here. It’s a comprehensive Bodybuilding.com Olympia feature and use it to follow the Live Webcast!

Who did I pick for my top 6? Check it out on Bodybuilding.com.

IFBB Bikini Pro Nathalia Melo: Am I E.T.?

IFBB Bikini Pro Nathalia Melo last stepped on stage at the Orlando Pro where she left with the overall crown. She’s back and ready for her second Bikini Olympia. The Brazilian Bombshell checks in and as always she has some entertaining thoughts to share. Check out her latest top ten list, you’ll be sure to get a laugh or three.

Am I an E.T.????

I remember when I first decided to compete, and went to my first Team Bombshell Camp. All these SUPER fit girls eating out of zip lock bags, and carrying these quite over-sized water containers; which, later I came to find out were jugs (HELLO JUG NATION!!!). I thought to myself…‘’What the hell is going on around here???’’ Well… a couple years have passed, a few competitions under the belt… and now I am eating out of zip lock bags, and YES I am a proud member of Jug Nation. So, today there are a few things that make me wonder whether I am completely out of my mind, or just a bit, hmmmm… OFF when compared to the normal population.

Here is a list of 10 things which makes me wonder if I am from the same planet as all of my “normal” friends are:
1. Thinking that going to the gym twice a day is not only normal, but absolutely necessary at times.
2. Being proud of my sneaker collection and knowing every new model that comes out, and having no idea who in Earth Christian Louboutin is!
3. Drinking water out a jug (glasses are overrated!)
4. Finding a new flavor of Mrs. Dash can put a smile on my face.
5. Counting down every second to 3PM, because that means it is time to eat!
6. To feel insulted if someone asks to have “a bite” of my food. hmm… NO!
7. Thinking that fork and knife are not so necessary when I have my hands.
8. To have as one of my main concerns when traveling if the hotel room has a mini fridge or not.
9. Spending the same amount of money on this fancy imported fish as I spend on my car payment every month.
10. To think that plain romaine lettuce makes a great snack because it is crunchy and sweet.

So.. if you are a Hardbody and also think you are from “another planet”, go to my Facebook page to tell me what makes you an “E.T.” just like me! =)

See you in Vegas!

LOL! Ah you gotta love Nathalia.

Dianna Dahlgren Recaps Her Road to The Olympia

IFBB Bikini Pro Dianna Dahlgren is headed to her second Olympia and is carrying the momentum of a victory into the big dance. She takes a minute to share her thoughts on the past few weeks and what’s up in the days ahead. Dianna has successfully positioned herself as one of the top contenders in this year’s Bikini Olympia.

Hello again!!

Thank you to Isaac & Hardbody.com for allowing me to do another blog before heading into the BIG SHOW! I’m so happy beyond belief and can’t wait!

The Dallas Europa was a BLAST to say the least! I hadn’t competed in almost a year, so this was a “come back” party that I had for myself. LOL! My goal was to be happy no matter what. I figured… the judges hadn’t seen me in so long who knows if they will like me or what I have changed in my physique! The weekend ended with a 4th place finish and I was so excited because I qualified for the Olympia! The top 3 girls were all qualified coming into this show so when that happens, the 4th place finisher will qualify.

I was lean in Dallas so I knew that for Phoenix I could relax a tad bit and be fuller :) It was a 2 week time period before I would be on stage again so I didn’t do too much damage with my diet. I always do cardio the morning after a show, my goals are always to stay on somewhat of a regimen, but to be honest with all of you I am so physically and mentally exerted from the weekend that I am out of whack for 3-4 days. After that I have to put the pieces back to the puzzle and keep going!

I enjoyed lots of fats headed into Phoenix, when I say fats: steak, nuts and almond butter… YUM! By the time I was ready to hit the stage again I was nervous! Even though my trainer was saying I was ready, I didn’t feel like it just because I am used to seeing my abs shredded, its just genetics. But in Phoenix the overall goal was for them not to be so hard. Very pleased with what happened because I ended up walking out of there with a win! My 2nd pro win and it was great to just enjoy that. Ever since last summer, I dealt with a lot of personal issues I was having with myself, family and work, I just couldn’t pull myself together for anything, so for me to come back, qualify, then win is very surreal for me and I really want to thank the Lord, my parents, and the people always sending me love and encouragement. THANK YOU! It really does mean the world to me :)

So now, I am 8 days away from my 2nd Olympia and can I say I wish it was here already! I’m working away until then and I can’t wait! Nothing crazy this show and my goals are all set. I can’t wait until next Friday comes and the judges call my number! TIME FOR SOME FUNNNNNN! :)

I hope all of you tune into the live webcast and follow along on twitter or better yet, ATTEND the Olympia! It’s such an amazing place to be, tons of people, tons of action, never a dull moment! Helloooo LAS VEGAS!! Friday September 16th is my Prejudging and Finals WOOOHOOOOO!! Keep me in your prayers and I will update you after THE BIG SHOW!!!

Thank you so much :)
DD

Figure Champ Nicole Wilkins Answers Your Questions

IFBB Figure Pro Nicole Wilkins checks in with her latest Hardbody blog and answers your questions. Nicole will compete in the 2011 IFBB Tournament of Champions Figure contest and then attempt to regain her title of Figure Olympia Champion. She will then head to India to compete in the Sheru Classic. Check out what Nicole has been up to (besides prepping for three shows in a row) and she answers some of your questions.

Hey Hardbodies! It’s been a while! I am now in the heart of my prep for 3 shows in a row… what was I thinking!? I am going to do the Tournament of Champions in Culver City Sept 10, then stay out in California before making the drive to Vegas for the Figure Olympia 6 days later and then finally off to the Sheru Classic in Mumbai, India the weekend after that. I am feeling fantastic and ready to rock and roll!

So since I have written last, I have made my rounds with Met-RX to just about every national show and met a lot of you, promoted the 2nd annual NPC Nicole Wilkins and Natural Michigan Championships, redid my website www.nicolewilkins.com and, of course, begun my prep. Life is good!

Here are some of the questions you have submitted to me through my website or facebook:

1. How do you deal with food cravings?

I get cravings almost every day, especially around 4pm and/or right before I go to bed. The afternoon is easier to deal with since most days I just keep myself busy at work. Nighttime is the hardest for me since I am sitting for once and the kitchen is within reach! What helps me at those times is drinking hot tea (Vanilla Chai is my favorite) with vanilla liquid Stevia, snacking on a few raw peppers or cucumbers, chugging water, reading a book, working on the computer, or closing my bedroom door and going to bed early! It also helps to eat solid meals every 2-3 hrs through the day beginning with breakfast each day. If you are really hungry at night, you may not be eating enough earlier in the day.

2. My loved ones are resisting my clean eating efforts. How can I get them to join me?
Once you have seen results from eating clean foods, it is natural to want everyone to join in. But undoing years of poor eating isn’t easy and you will probably experience a lot of resistance at first. You can’t make someone eat a certain way, especially if they are not ready to make a lifestyle change, but these things may help:

- Let them know what you are doing and why it is important to you.
- Have them pick out a healthy recipe and cook it together.
- Be gentle, quiet and persistent, don’t bug them about not eating clean. Remember they will only do it when they are ready.
- Go to the gym together. This may motivate them to eat healthier.

3. Is there a piece of advice that overlooked at first, but eventually became something you ended up incorporating into your daily or weekly routine?
Mindless snacking is a huge one.Every extra bite adds up through out the day, so if you think that one piece of candy (5x during the day) or the extra scoop or two of peanut butter isn’t going to matter, before you know it you have eaten en extra 500 calories that day.

As far as training, developing the mind-muscle connection is so important. Don’t rush. Concentrate on the muscle you are working and understand how to work muscles from all angles. Mix it up and try new exercises. I still struggle at times with the mind-muscle connection on my arm training days. It is not my favorite to do and I can easily lose focus and just try to rush to get it done. I am really trying to slow the reps down and focus on the range of motion, on stretching, flexing and squeezing the muscle. Weight doesn’t matter to me for the most part – I of course want to push myself, but what is most important is proper form and making sure I am keeping continuous tension on the muscle I am working, throughout the range of motion.

4. What is one kitchen appliance you couldn’t live without?

My grill pan :) I use this to grill my veggies, chicken and turkey patties.

5. Who inspires you?
My parents. They are my absolute favorite people in this entire world. They have instilled hard work eithic and support me 100% in all I do. I obviously would not be here or where I am not without them in my life. Not to sound cheesy but, aside from them – YOU guys inspire me, as does everyone who lives to better them self and embark on a healthy lifestyle. Keep following your dreams!!

Please be sure to check out my facebook page at www.facebook.com/nicolewilkins01 and let me know of any questions you would like me to answer in future hardbody blogs. Wishing you all my best. Until next time…

Alex Zerega Wins 3rd Annual Flex Bikini Model Search

California girl, Alexandra Zerega was awarded the 2010 FLEX Bikini Model Search crown this afternoon. She beat out a competitive field of over 85 women in the third annual event. Alex was quick on her feet during the interview round and obviously looked the part.

Taking the runner-up spot was Dayna Maleton. Dayna showed poise and confidence on stage, something that she’s lacked from time to time on other bikini stages. A very cute, Tatum Miranda finished in the third place position. Michell Gullet took home fourth and Dara Reyes rounded out the top five.

Figure Prejudging Report: Erin vs. Nicole for the Top Spot

The 2010 Figure Olympia prejudging took place yesterday and it’s a battle we all expected to see again. In one corner the champ, Nicole Wilkins-Lee and in the other corner the challenger Erin Stern. Which figure competitor would come out on top at this year’s contest?

Top Spot
Erin had a different look and feel to her when she took the stage. A new suit, new hair style and a new sense of self-confidence. Erin’s always had an athletic looking physique and this time was no different. She was on the money again with her body but it was how she presented it that was light years ahead what we’ve seen before. There was a subtle sense of confidence that exuded when she was compared to the other women. It was as if she had the mentality, it’s my time and I’m here to be the new champ.

The reigning champ Nicole rocked the stage with some added muscle since the Figure International. It suited her frame well and there’s no denying she has great structure. Something was a tiny bit off this time though. Nicole looked nervous and when she posed from the back it was noticeable that she was shaking on stage. It looked like she was holding a tiny bit of water, which may or may not have been caused by nerves. It wasn’t anything that was terrible by any stretch of the imagination but it was visible from my seat in the press pit.

Will it be a unanimous decision when the dust settles tonight? No chance, or at least I don’t think it will. I could see some judges giving the nod to Nicole however I also see Erin more than worthy of the crown. We’ll find out tonight if Nicole will hold onto her crown or if she will relinquish it to Erin.

Battle for the top six…
Heather Mae French looked good but not the sharpest I’ve seen her. She definitely found her groove in the last two years and should find herself in the third place spot. Kristal Richardson is back on stage after a hernia surgery and the only thing missing was that protruding belly button. Kristal presented her best physique to date and her legs really came up since her rookie years. Teresa Anthony presented her best look to date and could find herself in the top six tonight. Felicia Romero presented one of her best looks to date, if not the best ever. Her legs have come up and she was confident on stage. It was a completely different Felicia than we saw in Phoenix when she was out of the top three. Terri Turner is fighting for a spot in the top six and could be in the money tonight. Alicia Harris presented a balance physique and improved posing. She’ll be in the top 10 but will it be enough for the top 6? Rookie Candice Keene should be in the mix for a top 10 spot and had an impressive Olympia debut.

Others of note…
Larissa Reis was hard as nails and one thing head judge Sandy Williamson does NOT like to see if quad separation while posing in figure. Larissa was sitting on her legs and it made her look even harder than she was. It was a look that will likely keep her out of the top six and battling for a top ten spot. Cheryl Brown wasn’t as sharp as we’ve seen her in prior shows this year and when she didn’t get the top call-outs she wore her emotions on her suit. She was noticeably upset and if looks could kill there would have been a few casualties yesterday. A few people felt she was a top six competitor but it looks like she’ll be out of the top ten here.

My 2010 Figure Olympia Predictions:
1. Erin Stern
2. Nicole Wilkins- Lee
3. Heather Mae French
4. Kristal Richardson
5. Felicia Romero
6. Alicia Harris
7. Teresa Anthony

9. Candice Keene
10. Larissa Reis

Noemi Olah is IN The Bikini Olympia

There’s been some confusion surrounding the Hungary’s Noemi Olah’s status on the 2010 Bikini Olympia. Noemi debuted last week at the Detroit Pro and took home the top spot. When Noemi left Detroit she headed to Las Vegas. The IFBB Pro League office and Olympia staff hadn’t received her contract and thought she was out. Hence her name being off the competitor lists.

I caught up with Noemi at the Meet The Olympians where she seemed a bit stressed but also relieved. The IFBB hadn’t been able to reach her however they were able to connect and she will be in the Olympia. She told me, “I am just happy to be here and thankful to be on stage”. Noemi is a very beautiful woman with a great deal of potential. We’ll see how she does at the prejudging today.

Who Will Win the First Bikini Olympia?

Twenty four IFBB Bikini pros will take the stage in the first ever Bikini Olympia. It’s a very impressive group of women and a number of women are legitimate contenders for the crown.

Will it be the 18 year old, Nicole Nagrani who has some of the best stage presence and a great bikini body? Nathalia Melo will look to find the winner’s circle after slipping to third in Dallas, can she do it? Amanda Latona is coming off a win at the 2010 Europa Super show. Latona has one of the best booties in the show, if not thee best. Bodybuilding shows are won from the back, will bikini be the same? It will definitely play a role in the judges decision. Sonia Gonzales has won three out of four pro shows, can she topple this competitive field? The judges have really taken a liking to Ali Rosen will she land in the winner’s circle again? Noemi Olah won her pro debut in Detroit and is a dark horse to shake things up in the top six. Shelsea Montes found her groove in the middle of the season and could be in the mix for a top six spot. Jaime Baird has consistently been in the top five of every show, will she keep her streak alive? Dianna Dahlgren has a win under her suit, will she be able to hang with the curvier girls in this line up? Monique Minton slipped out of the top five in Dallas and will look to move back up in the mix here. Jessica Jessie is in a similar boat, she slid in Detroit and will be playing catch up this week to get back in the mix. Dina Al-Sabah will be the first and only competitor to compete in the first Figure Olympia and now the first Bikini Olympia. She should find herself in the top two callouts.

It’s a tough one to call. My top three in no particular order… Nicole Nagrani, Amanda Latona and Nathalia Melo. Who do YOU think will win the first ever bikini Olympia? Share your thoughts in the comments field and cast your vote below.
