Sugar Fueling Obesity?

Should sugar be controlled like alcohol and tobacco? A team of scientists at the University of California, San Francisco believe that sugar is fueling global obesity and it will require more than simple education and awareness to make a change.

Sugar, they argue, is far from just “empty calories” that make people fat.  At the levels consumed by most Americans, sugar changes metabolism, raises blood pressure, critically alters the signaling of hormones and causes significant damage to the liver – the least understood of sugar’s damages. These health hazards largely mirror the effects of drinking too much alcohol, which they point out in their commentary is the distillation of sugar.

SOCIETAL CONTROL OF SUGAR ESSENTIAL TO EASE PUBLIC HEALTH BURDEN

Sugar should be controlled like alcohol and tobacco to protect public health, according to a team of UCSF researchers, who maintain in a new report that sugar is fueling a global obesity pandemic, contributing to 35 million deaths annually worldwide from non-communicable diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Non-communicable diseases now pose a greater health burden worldwide than infectious diseases, according to the United Nations. In the United States, 75 percent of health care dollars are spent treating these diseases and their associated disabilities.

In the Feb. 2 issue of Nature, Robert Lustig, MD, Laura Schmidt, PhD, MSW, MPH, and Claire Brindis, DPH, colleagues at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), argue that sugar’s potential for abuse, coupled with its toxicity and pervasiveness in the Western diet make it a primary culprit of this worldwide health crisis.

This partnership of scientists trained in endocrinology, sociology and public health took a new look at the accumulating scientific evidence on sugar. Such interdisciplinary liaisons underscore the power of academic health sciences institutions like UCSF.

Worldwide consumption of sugar has tripled during the past 50 years and is viewed as a key cause of the obesity epidemic.  But obesity, Lustig, Schmidt and Brindis argue, may just be a marker for the damage caused by the toxic effects of too much sugar.  This would help explain why 40 percent of people with metabolic syndrome—the key metabolic changes that lead to diabetes, heart disease and cancer—are not clinically obese.

“As long as the public thinks that sugar is just ‘empty calories,’ we have no chance in solving this,” said Lustig, a professor of pediatrics, in the division of endocrinology at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and director of the Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health (WATCH) Program at UCSF.

“There are good calories and bad calories, just as there are good fats and bad fats, good amino acids and bad amino acids, good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates,”  Lustig said. “But sugar is toxic beyond its calories.”

Limiting the consumption of sugar has challenges beyond educating people about its potential toxicity. “We recognize that there are cultural and celebratory aspects of sugar,” said Brindis, director of UCSF’s Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies. “Changing these patterns is very complicated”

According to Brindis, effective interventions can’t rely solely on individual change, but instead on environmental and community-wide solutions, similar to what has occurred with alcohol and tobacco, that increase the likelihood of success.

The authors argue for society to shift away from high sugar consumption, the public must be better informed about the emerging science on sugar.

“There is an enormous gap between what we know from science and what we practice in reality,” said Schmidt, professor of health policy at UCSF’s Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies (IHPS) and co-chair of UCSF’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s (CTSI) Community Engagement and Health Policy Program, which focuses on alcohol and addiction research.

“In order to move the health needle, this issue needs to be recognized as a fundamental concern at the global level,” she said.

The paper was made possible with funding from UCSF’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute, UCSF’s National Institutes of Health-funded program that helps accelerate clinical and translational research through interdisciplinary, interprofessional and transdisciplinary work.

Many of the interventions that have reduced alcohol and tobacco consumption can be models for addressing the sugar problem, such as levying special sales taxes, controlling access, and tightening licensing requirements on vending machines and snack bars that sell high sugar products in schools and workplaces.

“We’re not talking prohibition,” Schmidt said. “We’re not advocating a major imposition of the government into people’s lives. We’re talking about gentle ways to make sugar consumption slightly less convenient, thereby moving people away from the concentrated dose. What we want is to actually increase people’s choices by making foods that aren’t loaded with sugar comparatively easier and cheaper to get.”

UCSF is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. For further information, please visit http://www.ucsf.edu/.

A Minute with a Photo Editor – What Type of Fitness Photos to Send

If you have aspirations of modeling, one way to get noticed is submitting your photos to a magazine. Many photographers will sell you on them submitting your photos to magazines and that’s great however the reality is anyone can submit photos. Each magazine works differently and not every magazine runs user submitted images. Many magazines have staff photographers and more of then not, they are the ones who will do the bulk of the shoots because they are on a salary.

If you want to be published in a specific magazine, you should shoot with photographers who get published. Your chances of being in a magazine increase when you shoot with a photographer who is published in that particular magazine. This also means published recently. The staff changes often at the magazines and it’s the photo editors, creative directors, editors and art directors who have input on who is photographed. If a photographer promises you a cover, that should be a HUGE red flag, unless they run the magazine. They may shoot a “cover try” however unless they have an assignment to shoot the cover, be wary. Even then you’re not guaranteed a cover. Covers can and do change minutes before going to press.

You will see photographers who are selling their services on work that was published in the 90s. Just because a photographer was published 20 years ago doesn’t mean they are still published. Ask to see what they’ve had published in the last year. A cover in 1994 doesn’t mean they still shoot covers in 2012. Look at the magazines you like and see whose name is next to the photo. That’s the easiest way too identify the photographer. If the magazine is legit they will credit the photography.

You can send your photos to magazines yourself. It’s a direct way to get on the radar of a magazine. It doesn’t mean you will get published or that they will even respond back to you but your chances increase if you follow the input below. The biggest mistake you can make is sending in overly photoshopped photos of yourself. Looking plastic in photos may be a good look for Barbie but it’s not for aspiring models.

We caught up with a photo editor and asked what would be the best photos to send to him/her for consideration. The photo editor’s name is printed in the front of the magazine (or it should be) and typically will have their email listed. If it’s not, you may have to do some hunting for their contact info.

Want to be in a fitness magazine? Here’s the type of photos you should submit to increase your chances of getting called back.

• Digital snaps, in focus taken with proper lighting (these don’t have to be professional).
• Contest and non-contest shots
• Full length, front and back double bi
• Abs shot
• Head shot, smiling
• Files no larger than 1 MB each

Note this is for a fitness magazine and what they look for in the women they use for fitness features. They are looking for abs, arms, shoulders and of course a good face. If you follow this input you will increase your chances of getting a call back.

Canadian Freestyle Skier Passes Away at Age 29 – Rest in Peace Sarah Burke

It’s with a heavy heart I share this sad news. While I never knew Sarah personally, I do know many of her friends and colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sarah’s family, friends and loved ones. Sarah was a four-time Winter X Games champion from Canada. She crashed last week while training on the Eagle Superpipe in Park City, Utah.

January 19, 2012 - Groundbreaking Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke passed away at 9:22AM January 19, 2012 at the University of Utah Hospital from injuries sustained in an accident on the Eagle Superpipe at Park City Mountain Resort on Tuesday, January 10, 2012. She was training for upcoming winter events.

As the result of Sarah’s fall, she suffered a ruptured vertebral artery, one of the four major arteries supplying blood to the brain. The rupture of this artery led to a severe intracranial hemorrhage, which caused Sarah to go into cardiac arrest on the scene. Emergency personnel responded and CPR was administered on the scene during which time she remained without a pulse or spontaneous breathing.  Studies in the University of Utah Hospital Emergency Department indicated that she retained brainstem function. She was placed on life support and a protocol of therapeutic hypothermia was initiated to protect her brain. An angiogram indicated the site of arterial bleeding, and on Wednesday, January 11 the injured artery was successfully repaired.

After the operation, numerous neurological examinations, electrodiagnostic tests and imaging studies revealed that Sarah sustained severe irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest, resulting in hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Sarah passed away peacefully surrounded by those she loved. In accordance with Sarah’s wishes, her organs and tissues were donated to save the lives of others.

While early reports in the media stated that Sarah’s injury was a traumatic brain injury, it is important to note that Sarah’s condition was the result of a lack of oxygen to the brain during cardiac arrest.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to Sarah’s dear friends for their love and support, and for traveling to Salt Lake City to comfort the family.

They would also like to thank the University of Utah Hospital and her physicians and care team in the Neuro Critical Care Unit for their incredible care and compassion.

The family was moved by the sincere and heartfelt sympathy expressed by people inspired by Sarah from all around the world. They have received a substantial number of inquiries from those who would like to make a contribution on behalf of Sarah.  For more information, please go to http://www.giveforward.com/sarahburke.

A public celebration of Sarah’s life will be held in the coming weeks.

Burger King Delivers. Seriously? Seriously.

Chalk this one up to a WTF moment. While First Lady Michelle Obama continues her fight against childhood obesity, fast-food giant Burger King is exploring a delivery option. Talk about failing in whopper proportion.

Burger King canned their creepy King Mascot last year but there is hope for him to return as a delivery boy. In a move that’s almost as disturbing as The King, the number two burger chain has started a delivery service in Maryland and Virgina. Now your fat ass doesn’t even have to get in a car, you can just click a mouse and Burger King will deliver to your door.

Call me crazy but C’Mon! We’ve all eaten fast food at some point but to have it delivered to your home is a bit of a stretch. Ever had fries that needed warmed up in the microwave? They’re nastier than Nicki Manji’s lyrics.

Oh but don’t worry they’ve developed a solution for that. Jonathan Fitzpatrick, chief brand and operations officer for Burger King, tells USATODAY that their “proprietary thermal packaging technology” will ensure “the Whopper is delivered hot and fresh, and the french fries are delivered hot and crispy.”

Well, hell that changes everything sign me up for a double bag of hot and crispy artery clogging nastiness.

You may have to order double what you might ordinarily. As if home delivery wasn’t ludicrous enough there is a minimum order of $8 to $10 plus a $2 delivery charge. That should ensure lazy bastards will order more than just a single Whopper and fries.

Wait, it gets better. The customer has to live within 10 minutes of the store. If you can’t take your chunky monkey butt to a store within 10 minutes from where you reside you’ve got bigger issues than your expanding waistline.

Seriously? C’mon Burger King.

Parts of this story were from USATODAY.com.

Nicole Wilkins Answers Your Hardbody Competition Questions

The defending Arnold Sports / Ms. Figure International Champ, Nicole Wilkins gives us an update on her contest prep and answers your questions. Nicole talks stretch marks, politics, cardio and more.

Wow! What a week! I feel like my training has kicked up a notch this as my entire body is sore and my appetite is through the roof! 7 weeks out from the Arnold and things are going smooth – my metabolism has kicked up and I’m feeling strong. Today was a higher calorie day and tomorrow I have a massage scheduled, so the week will be off to a great start. I also picked out my color suit for the show – it’s a color I have never worn before. I can’t wait to see the final outcome! Other than the usual, I haven’t traveled for almost the entire month so I have been enjoying my time at home ;)

I have gathered some of your competition questions to answer. Feel free to ask away on my facebook page  www.facebook.com/nicolewilkins01 and I may pick yours for a future blog.

1. I always hear everyone say that doing competitions is all politics and about who you know to win. Someone may look better but doesn’t win because the judges favor the other person more. Do you really think that happens?
The sport is very subjective. This is the reason that there is a panel of judges and not just one or two of them. It is a collaborative score between at least 7-9 judges at local NPC shows and even more at the National and Professional competitions. The high and low scores are eliminated when tallying up the totals, so if one judge tends to favor one girl and the scores are way off from the rest, it won’t matter because that score would be eliminated. For a competitor to win that didn’t deserve it because of politics, all of those judges would have to agree and the chances of that happening are very slim. Aside from the fact that if he/she gets caught, they would be removed from judging any future competitions, the risk just wouldn’t be worth it.

Bottom line, you must come in to each show looking the best you can. If you didn’t place where you thought you should have, ask why. Don’t blame it on someone else, take a real honest look at your physique and see where you can improve. In my experience it is only those who don’t do well that blame it on the politics. I do believe that if a competitor continues to come back with improvements to their physique and has a good attitude each time they step onstage, the judges may take that into consideration.

2. What is an appropriate intensity and amount of cardio for the offseason vs when preparing for a contest? How many days a week? Alone or after weights? Would cutting calories be more effective than hours of cardio?
The appropriate intensity and amount of cardio will vary from physique to physique. If there was one set plan, it would be easy :)

If you tend to pack on the pounds fairly easily, then you may keep the duration around 45 minutes each day. If you are trying to gain muscle, then keeping it closer to 30 minutes a few times a week may be sufficient. I usually recommend doing cardio immediately after weight training or at a separate time. This way, you will have more energy for your weight workouts. I also believe that your diet makes up 80% of what you look like and that hours upon hours won’t make much of a difference if you are eating like crap. So yes, cutting calories and eating clean is more effective than hours of cardio, but the most effective way to get in shape is obviously a combination of both.

3. I’m in the process of having laser treatments to remove my tattoos. I wanted to know if there are any good products I can use to cover them up now? I am concerned about having them and competing. Is this something that the judges frown upon? Thanks!

Jan Tana makes a tattoo cover-up that can be placed under the tan onstage. It can be found here.

This product is great for photo shoots or day-to-day life and goes on smooth. However, sometimes onstage it can make the tan a little thick and if it rubs off or you have too much on, it could look a little muddy. If your tattoo is not big and distracting, I would leave it alone. Although skin tone is taken into consideration, the judges won’t mind minor tattoos. Men and women compete with them all the time.

4. How extensive can stretch marks / scars be on a woman and she still have hope of doing well in competitions? I know the fake tan covers a lot of flat stretch marks and scars, but I used to weigh over 230 lbs at 5′ 6″ tall and when I was cutting to see how I looked, I found that the stretch marks and loose skin were very apparent. I was around 130 lbs when I stopped cutting down due to being discouraged by this. I feel my build is great, but the loose, bumpy, and scarred skin troubles me. I don’t want to set myself up for embarrassment or severe disappointment.

First of all, congratulations on having lost 100 pounds! Before you get discouraged due to stretch marks, take a look back at how far you have come. Your health is better, energy is higher and you have extended years to your life.

I am pretty certain that nearly everyone reading this blog (men included) have stretch marks somewhere on their body. I have them on my upper right thigh and the top of my glutes. Unfortunately some have them worse than others. Exercise, staying hydrated and keeping the skin moisturized will help tighten the skin. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but they won’t ever completely go away. They will most likely go from a darker pinkish color to a lighter clearer color, similar to a scar. The only way to remove them or loose skin, is to have it surgically removed.

When it comes to competition, a portion of it is based on skin tone. If there is a lot of loose skin, it could effect your placing. However, if your dream is to get onstage because you are proud of your body and what you have accomplished, who is anyone to tell you no? Every single competitor up there has a story. The tan, the cut of the suit, as well as your posing could make some of the stretch marks less noticeable. It is ultimately your decision. But please, competing is for fun. You are being judged on someone else’s opinion, so don’t take it to heart and think that you do not look good. You have already won with the changes you have made to your body.

Until next time….

Send Us Your Best Hardbody Tebowing Photo & Win

“Tebowing” is spreading across the globe like wild wire. If you haven’t heard of it you’re likely still using a cassette tape player in the gym. What is “Tebowing” you ask? According to tebowing.com it’s ”to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different.”

Tebowing started when a fan of Broncos’ quarterback Tim Tebow mimicked his pose after an overtime victory. The photo became so popular that Jared Kleinstein devoted a website to the post and encouraged others to submit their photos.

Think it’s crazy? Maybe so however “Tebowing” is no an officially recognized word by the Global Language Monitor. Fathead also released a “Tebowing” sticker that is one of the companies best sellers.

People young and old have participated in “Tebowing” and we’re jumping on the Tebowing train. Tweet us your best Tebowing photo to @hardbodynews or email it to info@hardbody.com and we’ll assemble a collection of HARDBODY TEBOWING photos. The person who sends us the most creative hardbody version of tebowing a bag full of goodies (US residents only sorry).

Four-Time Winter X Games Champion Sarah Burke in a Coma

Canadian freestyle skier, Sarah Burke is in a coma after a serious head injury while training at Park City, Utah. The 29 year-old Burke is a four-time Winter X Games champion in the skiing superpipe.

Sarah played a major role in getting the halfpipe added to the 2014 Winter Games. She’s the 2005 halfpipe world gold medalist. Still two years away from the Olympics Sarah has been considered one of the gold-medal favorites in Sochi, Russia (home to the 2014 Winter Olympics).

Reports are that Sara was airlifted from Park City, Utah to Salt Lake City after crashing at the end of a training session.

From www.ctvbc.ctv.ca
The CEO of the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association said sources had told him Burke is in a coma, but association spokeswoman Kelley Korbin said Wednesday her condition had yet to be confirmed.

“We’re trying to get more information as I speak,” Korbin said.

Burke, who was born in Ontario before moving to Whistler, B.C., is believed to have landed a trick on her feet before bouncing onto her head.

“What I’ve heard is that the crash itself didn’t appear to be that severe,” Korbin said, adding that it “obviously turned out to be very serious.”

According to The Saltlake City Tribune the family has requested not to release further details on Burke’s condition except to confirm that she’s alive and still at the hostpital. Nicole Wool, Sarah’s publicist shared with the paper in an email that Burke is “sedated and being monitored”. At the family’s request, hospital spokesman Phil Sahm could not release further details on Burke’s condition Wednesday morning except to confirm she was still at the hospital and still alive.

Sarah was preparing for the 2012 Winter X-Games held later this month. Read a recent interview with the skiing start on ESPN.com.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sarah and her loved ones. You can share your thoughts and well wishes on Sarah’s Facebook page or to her twitter account. Include the hashtag #STAYstrongSarah and let’s show how strong our support is while Sarah fights for her life.

UPDATE via Smith Opitics (one of Sarah’s sponsors)
On Tuesday, Jan. 10, Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke was transported by AirMed helicopter to University of Utah Hospital from Park City Mountain Resort after sustaining serious injuries during training. She is currently listed in critical condition in the hospital’s Neuro Critical Care Unit.

“Sarah sustained serious injuries and remains intubated and sedated in critical condition,” according to Safdar Ansari, M.D., a neurointensivist with University of Utah Health Care.

Sarah’s husband Rory Bushfield and her family are by her bedside and wish to express their sincere thanks to everyone, all over the world, for their heartfelt thoughts, prayers, and well wishes. “Sarah is a very strong young woman and she will most certainly fight to recover,” said Rory.

Sarah’s family has asked that fans and media respect their privacy during this difficult time. Sarah’s friends and fans are encouraged to post their well wishes on Sarah’s Facebook page.

2011 Victoria’s Secrets Fashion Show

The Victoria’s Secrets Fashion show, one of the most popular fashion shows in the world, airs tonight on CBS. Nearly a year of planning goes into the event and it shows with it’s production value. Victoria’s Secrets is embracing the technology available today with a live pre-show event. They are doing a great job of integrating twitter with #VSFashionShow as the hashtag. Hundreds of thousands of tweets are pouring in related to the event.

Bikini competitors take note of how the women in this event own the runway. They walk with confidence, look fantastic and while they may not have the muscle of a competitor, they certainly have the swagger.

Here’s a fun little promo. Comment below if you plan to watch the show.

Dodgers Hire First Female Trainer in Major League Baseball

Headlines about the The Los Angeles Dodgers potentially being for sale due to bankruptcy and Mark Cuban making a ploy to buy are making their way around the interwebs this week but there’s a much cooler story to the Dodgers. On Monday, the Dodgers hired Sue Falsone as their head athletic trainer. This is a huge deal for women because she’s the first female to be hired for this position in the USA major pro sports leagues.

Sue has worked with not only a variety of NBA, NFL and NHL players but also MLB players. In ESPN.com’s Stephania Bell report she cites Falsone as working with former MLB pitcher (and now analyst) Curt Schilling on rehabbing his ankle.

Falsone received her bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from Daemen College. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Human Movement Science with a concentration in Sports Medicine from the University of North Carolina.

She shared with USAtoday…

“It is a true honor to be given this opportunity with such a progressive and historic organization,” Falsone said in the statement, adding, “I look forward to helping develop innovative and creative programs to reduce injuries and keep our players on the field so that they can achieve their potential.”

As the Los Angeles Times reminds us tha an athletic trainer is not the same as a personal trainer.

For the clueless, athletic trainers are not the same as personal trainers or strength and conditioning coaches; they’re healthcare professionals primarily concerned with injuries and injury prevention, working with coaches and physicians to make sure athletes are able to play safely.

Congratulations Sue and all the best in your new position. Read more on USAToday.com.

Awe Nuts! Peanut Butter Cost on the Rise

Peanut Butter lovers will feel no love when they visit the grocery stores to pick up a jar of the creamy (or crunchy) goodness. CNNMoney reports that peanut prices are up with the decreased production. The heat and drought that hit the southern USA this year is one of the main causes for the increase. The article cites an increase of 20-40% with some brands. Americans spend nearly $800 million on peanut butter each year. WOW!

Peanut Butter is one of the few “allowed treats” on many competitors diets. Remember when a Peanut Butter and Jelly sammich was living cheap? Not as much these days.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Trick-or-treaters might want to hold on to those Reese’s Cups this Halloween as sharp increases in peanut butter prices have begun going into effect following one of the worst peanut harvests in decades.

Kraft will raise prices for its Planters brand peanut butter by 40% starting Monday, while ConAgra has instituted increases of more than 20% for its Peter Pan brand that went into effect this month.

J.M. Smucker, which makes Jif, will introduce price hikes of around 30% starting Tuesday.

Consumers, meanwhile, are already seeing these increases reflected at grocery stores.

Maria Brous, a spokeswoman for the Publix chain, said the store had already made slight increases in retail prices and expects them to go higher “as the cost of goods continue[s] to rise”.

Dick Roberts, a spokesman for Giant Eagle grocery stores, said that “like all retailers,” the store is “being affected by industry factors on peanut butter pricing”. Chris Brand, a spokesman for Giant food stores, said the “outlook does not look good until next year’s crop is harvested and produced”.

Peanuts usually get harvested in the fall, around September and October.

While spokespeople for several grocery chains declined to provide specific pricing figures, the peanut industry is clearly under pressure this year after one of the worst harvests in recent memory.

Prices for a ton of runner peanuts, commonly used to make peanut butter, hit nearly $1,200 this month, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That’s up from just $450 per ton a year ago. Overall, the USDA projects that American peanut production will hit 3.6 billion pounds this year, down 13% from last year.

Analysts attribute this drop to the intense heat and drought that hit the southern U.S. this year, as well as to high prices for other crops that led farmers to focus their efforts elsewhere.

Americans spend almost $800 million on peanut butter and consume an average of more than six pounds of peanut products each year, according to The National Peanut Board, a farmer-funded research group.

NPC Bikini Competitor Nola June Wins Kickboxing Debut

NPC Bikini competitor, Nola June kicked her way out of the womb at birth and she hasn’t stopped yet. Although she doesn’t like to talk about it much, she’s been a ninja since birth and if you have any doubts look no further than the results of her kickboxing debut. When asked if she would be a ring girl for a night of fights in Charlotte, North Carolina, Nola asked to fight instead.

Nola’s a top national NPC competitor placing in the top five numerous times. Why would a bikini competitor step into a ring to fight? Nola tells me she’s been practicing some from a mixed martial arts for the last three years and taken a liking to muay thai. When the opportunity presented itself to fight for the first time and put her sparring to use, she jumped at the chance. Nola won her fight by unanimous decision but says next time it will be by knock out. Congrats Nola and who says bikini women aren’t tough?

New Bold & Fresh Design to Diet Coke Can

Diet Coke was introduced back in 1982 and the look has remained relatively unchanged until now. This Fall a new can will hit store shelves and it’s designed to have a modern look to a classic product. Don’t worry the taste will go unchanged, whether that’s good or bad we’ll leave up to you. Personally, I’m a fan of Diet Coke and when asked, “Is Diet Pepsi ok?” at a restaurant I say um, no.

According to ADWEEK.com the can is part of a partnership with the fashion web site StyleCaster.com. A new trendy look for Fall. Seeing how the products stack up in the image below is pretty cool.

I’m a fan of any company who pays attention to their product and packaging design. So many companies fail miserably at it. I think Diet Coke is WINNING with the redesign. What do you think?

Do you like the new Diet Coke can design?

I downloaded the app to my iPhone this morning and it installed without any problems. Sounds simple enough but you’d be surprised how many apps crash or don’t install when they first launch. It loads quickly and designed so that you can navigate easily. I haven’t tried any of the recipes listed yet but after seeing some of the images, it does have my mouth watering.

Dianna Dahlgren Does Dallas

IFBB Bikini Pro Dianna Dahlgren has positioned herself as one of the top models in the biz and now she’s looking to do the same on the competitive stage. She hasn’t competed since last year’s Bikini Olympia and she was a little off her best there. What will we see from the California girl this weekend in Dallas? Can she bring the same swagga she shows in her photos to the stage and overtake the Bikini Olympia champ, Sonia Gonzales? DD checks in as she heads into this weekend’s Dallas Europa Super show.

ALMOST THERE!!!!!! KEEP GOING!!!!!
Wow! I can’t believe where the time has gone! Is it really August already!? Right now in my life I am very happy!! I’m closing in on the last days of prep before I head into the Dallas Europa and I am so ready for it! I have been working very hard for the last few months and I’m excited to see what will happen next weekend! For those of you who keep up with Hardbody.com you will know that I was supposed to do the New York Pro back in May and unfortunately I couldn’t pull myself together in time! It was very heart breaking for me, I am very hard on myself for things I don’t do when I say I am going to do them. But NY Pro was not the right time for me and I am so ecstatic that I have chosen Dallas Europa as my first show of the year! I have not competed since last year’s Olympia, so my overall goal here in Dallas is to just have fun! Get on that stage, work it, and wait for those judges to call my number! :)

The past few weeks have been some of the hardest, mentally. Nutrition and diet is the most important during your prep and I tell everyone that this is my biggest challenge of competing! So during this prep I have learned so much about dieting and what works for me. Learning your triggers and what to stay away from, I haven’t had to do this in over a year! So I forgot what it was like in some situations. I travel a ton for work, my second home is an airplane and a hotel room LOL but I have surprisingly made it work great for my program and didn’t make excuses! Got it handled!! So here we are, only a few days left of workouts before I fly out to Dallas. I’m finalizing all the ‘TO DOs’ of competing in a show. Flights, Hotel, Hotel Roomie (Brooke Mora! YAY), Tanning, Make up and Hair, Suit, Shoes… and POSING POSING POSING!

I’ll keep all of you updated on the show so make sure to follow me on twitter! @diannadahlgren or you can go find me on Facebook! I’m just so thankful, my support system has been amazing and Ive been treating myself very well, so I feel great headed into Dallas, not a worry in my mind! See you all there!

xoxo

Hardbody Product Review: Perky Jerky

It’s amazing what can transpire from a twitter exchange. While some people are slow to embrace new technology and like to complain about how dumb it is, I like to run with it. I recently made mention of the key words “perky” and “jerky” on twitter and I surprisingly received a tweet back from a company called PERKY JERKY. How funny, right? Turns out the company is based in Denver, Colorado and their office is not far from where the madness of Hardbody.com takes place. The company and I exchanged a few tweets and they offered to send samples of their product. I happily accepted, especially with a name like PERKY JERKY.

When the meat snack arrived, I knew this was my kinda jerky. The packaging was a shiny foil – yes, I am distracted by shiny objects but that’s a blog for another time. There was a sticker on the front that read, “If you’re holding this, you’re one of the lucky ones.” A little attitude and sass – right up my ally. Inside were samples of Turkey Perky Jerky and the original Perky Jerky made from sliced beef. The individual packaging is pretty cool and would be something that stood out to me on store shelves. In fact, since my tweet exchange I’ve seen the Perky Jerky in TARGET and at 7-11.
I tried the original first and it was tasty. The thing that stood out to me was that it wasn’t as salty as most jerky and the meat wasn’t dry. If you’ve eaten jerky you know it can be a battle to tear a bite off and then becomes a workout just to chew it. The Perky Jerky isn’t anything remotely close to that. The meat almost melts in your mouth and there’s a slight hint of brown sugar in the flavoring. I then tore into the turkey bag and sweet momma if it was love at first bite. The turkey was equally as moist and tasted great. Those of you who eat turkey know how easy it is to have dry bird, not this stuff.

I know, I know you’re on a fitness web site and jerky isn’t exactly at the top of the list for health and fitness however if you look at the ingredients and sodium content in PERKY JERKY it’s significantly lower than their competitors. There are no preservatives, no nitrates and no MSG added to this bag of jerkiness.

If all this wasn’t enough to make you want to snag a bag, there’s more. A portion of the company’s earnings are devoted to muscular dystrophy and down syndrome research. Their web site says, “The Perky Jerks are doing this for a great cause. We decided to take the Paul Newman route and devote a significant amount of the proceeds from Perky Jerky to charity. We strongly support The Foundation For Their Sake, which is devoted to research and care for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Down Syndrome.” Mad props to the peeps for doing this.

How did the product come about?
Our story — like most good stories — begins with two Jerks in a ski lodge. After a long, hard night of energy-drink-cocktail-fueled libation, these jerks settled in while the winter storm raged outside. The next morning they awoke, loaded up their gear, and headed out to the mountain. Amongst this gear was an open bag of peppered beef jerky, which had, unfortunately became drenched in some of the energy drink that had been carelessly spilled the night before. On the first lift up, it made no difference. To these jerks, jerky was the only breakfast they needed, altered or not. Much to their delight, the jerky had retained its original flavor, but was more tender by the accident. What’s more, as they floated their way down the mountain through bottomless powder, they realized they’d been given an extra boost – the jerky had taken on some of the pep of the energy drink. On the next lift ride up, the greatest innovation in jerky since cracked pepper was born.

THE HARDBODY HOOK UP:
If you order PERKY JERKY from their online store and enter the code “hardbody” you will 20% OFF the entire purchase until August 15th, limit one per customer. We’re also doing a fun little giveaway with the jerks on their facebook page. All you have to do is “like” their page (http://www.facebook.com/perkyjerky) and post the following…

I’m a hardbody and everyone wants my meat because ________________.

Just fill in the blank and post it on their wall. Let’s show those Jerkies what’s up HARDBODY NATION!

A huge shout out to Dafne and all the jerks for donating product to our first CAMP HARDBODY. It was a huge hit and we’ll be partnering them for more things in the future. In fact, this weekend I’ll be packing some meat with me at the NPC USA Championships. Find me and say, “HEY HARDBODY JERK – Where’s My Meat?” I’ll give you a sample of PERKY JERKY, while supplies last.

I was not paid to share this product review. Just a Jerk who loves his meat PERKY style.

MMA Hard Body Gina Carano Stars in Haywire

Gina Carano is one of the few women in MMA who has had any type of “mainstream” appeal. She not only has a hard body, is a bit of a bad ass but has the looks to match. She hasn’t fought in months but it hasn’t stopped her appeal with the fans. Gina has appeared in a variety of fitness magazines and she was part of the failed attempt to revitalize American Gladiators.

“Crush” as she was known on American Gladiators, will hope to do a bit of crushing at the box office early next year. Gina stars in the action packed movie HAYWIRE. This will be Gina’s first lead role in a movie and from the looks of the trailer she does a pretty damn good job in her big screen debut. Carano stars as Mallory Kane. The web site’s youtube channel shares:

Mallory Kane is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency. Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.

Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious—and dangerous—trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary.

The movie is directed by Oscar® winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) and has a heavy hitting cast including Channing Tatum (GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra), Ewan McGregor (The Ghost Writer), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Antonio Banderas (The Legend of Zoro), Bill Paxton (“Big Love”), Michael Douglas (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Michael Angarano (Almost Famous).

Puerto Rican Irise Wiseman Loses 50 Pounds!

Originally from Puerto Rico, Iris Wiseman is a 35 year old Hardbody! She checks in at just under 5 feet tall and went from 140lbs to 90 after changing her eating and workout habits. She’s the Bodybuilding.com Bodyspace Member of the Month and has an inspiring story we can all learn from.

Q: What is the most important thing you’ve learned since you started training?

Well… the 1st thing I learned about training is that there is a lot to learn! The most important thing is that you have to be consistent…change will not come if you sporadically diet and exercise.

You have to…absolutely have to do it day in and day out. It has to become a part of you. It’s pointless if you do it for a wedding, class reunion or cruise if you are going to go back to a sedentary lifestyle afterwards.

Training goes further than the hour spent in the gym each day; you have to live the lifestyle outside of the gym as well.

Solid advice from the PR Cutie. Read her interview and profile here. Congrats and keep up the great work!

Grill Tips: Keep Your Summer Barbecues Healthy & Safe

Barbecues are a fun way to spend a summer night or weekend with friends and family. Thanks to Chicago Healers Practitioner Dr. Martha Howard we have a few tips for holding a healthy and safe barbeque this summer.

Dr. Howard shares these tips to a fun, healthy and safe summer barbecue.
• Clean the grill—get rid of the old fats

• Avoid petroleum starters for charcoal. If you use charcoal, use a wood starter and stack your charcoal up in a 2 pound metal can (no paint on the can, please) with the ends cut off. Lift off the can with tongs and spread out the coals when they are well started.

• Be sure you know how to turn on your propane grill safely. Avoid a time gap between opening the valve and starting the grill.

• Wash your hands and use separate plates and cutting boards for raw and cooked meats. Be sure to wash hands again before putting on long, heat-proof barbecue gloves. (Towels and little hot pads are a set-up for burns.)

• Trim most of the fat—less fat means fewer PAHs.

• Use marinades—they tend to protect the meat from charring. Put the marinade on and put all items back in the refrigerator until ready to go. Don’t let them sit out.

• Use precooking prior to grilling, especially for items like raw brats. Avoid taking burgers, chicken or other meats directly from the freezer to the grill.

• Cut meat and chicken into smaller pieces so they cook through.

• Turn down the fire and turn your burgers, steaks, chops, or chicken often, so they cook through, and come out a gorgeous golden brown.

• If you are cooking a thicker portion of meat or chicken, think about using a meat thermometer.
o Chicken: 165 degrees.
o Hamburger: 160 degrees.
o Pork: 150 degrees.
o Hot dogs: 140 degrees.
o Steak 145 degrees for medium rare (only if you know where your steak comes from) and 160 degrees for medium

• Grill more veggies! And if you are making kabobs, oil all the veggies, cook the onions with the meat, and grill the other vegetables separately. That way the meat gets done, and the vegetables don’t get overdone.

• At the end of the barbecue, be sure to put out your charcoal completely, and if you are using propane, be sure the valve is turned off.

Jennifer Cowan Flexes Her Skills at the World Series of Poker

Some of you may know the name Jennifer Cowan from the world of NPC Figure and Bodybuilding. Jennifer started her competitive career in NPC Figure and was told she had too much muscle so she made the switch to bodybuilding. Jennifer “The Beast” Cowan successfully made the switch to bodybuilding at a mighty weight of 114lbs and captured the overall title at the 2008 NPC Junior USAs. She’d likely be a great candidate for the new Women’s Physique division however she has her sights set on a different competition, poker.

Jennifer was one of the women making waves at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), women’s tournament. The Palantine, Illinois resident stayed calm, cool and collected while rock’n a pair of shades and showing off her guns in a black top. When the dust settled Jennifer went out in 7th place earning her $22,750.

Pokernews.com called the action:

On the last hand before the break, Jennifer Cowan raised to 35,000 from under the gun and received a call from Katherine Stahl in the small blind. Carol Tomlinson was in the big blind and said, “How can I fold here, I’m gonna flop the nuts!” before she called as well.

The flop came down {9-Hearts}{8-Spades}{5-Clubs} and it was checked over to Cowan who bet 70,000. Stahl folded but Tomlinson check-raised and Cowan moved all in. Tomlinson made the call and the players turned over their hands.

Tomlinson: {7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}
Cowan: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

Amazingly, Tomlinson had flopped the nuts just as she had predicted and was in great shape to knockout Cowan who would need runner-runner to survive. The turn was the {K-Spades} and was as good as it could get for Cowan who made a set and would just need the board to pair to stay alive and win the hand. Unfortunately for her, it came the {4-Spades} and Cowan was eliminated while Tomlinson continued to build on her lead.

Here’s a look at Jennifer when she competed at the 2009 Team Universe, where she took second in the women’s lightweight bodybuilding division. See more photos of her on stage here.

Congratulations Jennifer! See more photos and complete details from the event on pokernews.com.

Maria Sharapova Has People Talking Tennis Again

Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova is a perfect example of a hardbody woman. WHAT? Sure she may not have the most ripped abs or chiseled set of guns but she has embraced the hardbody state of mind and returns to the Wimbledon finals. She faced an injury that ends many tennis players’ careers but she’s fought her way through it. Maria is one of women’s tennis biggest stars and has people talking about a sport that’s often an after thought.

The 24-year old Sharapova had been struggling to find her groove since suffering a shoulder injury but is in the finals once again. Today she returns to the Women’s Wimbledon Finals in hopes of raising the trophy, a feat she first achieved at age 17. Petra Kvitova, a 21-year old, from the Czech Republic will attempt to keep her from a second title.

Sports Illustrated shared this from Sharapova, “I had so many expectations when I’d come back, and I set myself certain goals. I never really met any of them, to be honest. When you go through something like that, knowing that not too many players have recovered from (shoulder surgery), it’s normal to feel frustrated.”

Many women face challenges in the form of injury and it’s easy to feel sorry for yourself and make excuses. If you want to compete at the highest level of any sport you have to embody a hardbody state of mind. Maria has done that and is one win away from achieving her goal of a second Wimbledon title.

There are a number of examples that could be cited of women overcoming overcome injuries to achieve greatness so what’s the big deal with Maria Sharapova?

The bigger story is that Maria has people talking about women’s tennis again. You don’t have to play it or even care about tennis but you’ll likely hear about it. Like many individual sports you need to have personalities and stars of the game. If you don’t have a few big names in a sport people aren’t going to be interested. TV execs and the tennis industry are delighted that Maria is in today’s finals because she’s a star. What’s Sharapova’s appeal? She’s marketable based not only on her looks but her mental toughness. When you have a super star of a sport you attract casual fans. She’s been on the cover of magazines and makes millions from not only her prize money but also her endorsement contracts.

Whether she wins or loses in today’s finals, Maria has casual fans intrigued and that’s WINNING for women in sports. Follow the action on twitter.com/Wimbledon or tune into your local NBC station.
