2012 Fitness Magazine Covers – Vote For Your Favorite

The new year is right around the corner and with that typically comes new goals, many of which include getting trim and hitting the gym. We’ve gathered six women’s fitness magazines that are hitting store shelves just in time for your New Year’s resolutions. Let’s take a look at each cover and cast your vote for which is your favorite.

2012 fitness magazines

Hardbody Breakdown:
The first thing that stands out to us is that every magazine is using a plain white background. One could argue a colored background would help stand out better but perhaps the magazines have research that shows plain white works best.

Every issue, except Muscle & Fitness HERS, uses large numbers to catch your attention. Call-outs like “Drop 10lbs in 28 days” on the Oxygen cover. FitnessRX for Women uses”Burn 1000 calories” and “101 Superfire tips for fat loss”. SHAPE gives you “12 tricks for better sleep” and they too will help you burn calories but only 600. Makes you wonder how you can burn 400 more calories, right? Maybe, maybe not. Women’s Health offers “465+ Life-Changing Health, Beauty, Nutrition, Style & Fitness Tips”. SELF will help you “lose 2 pounds this week” and offers “50 meals that melt away inches”.

It’s clear that FitnessRX and Muscle & Fitness HERS are showcasing more muscular women and only FitnessRX has a woman holding weights. Those are also the only magazines showing women in work out attire while the others use swimsuits and casual wear.

Maybe you like the model in one but not the design or what the call-outs claim to share inside. Maybe you like the photo but not the color or perhaps you don’t like any of them. Haywire Star Gina Carano Featured in GQ

Gina Carano has been thought of as the “face of women’s MMA” for years however she hasn’t fought in quite some time. She was an American Gladiator until the show was canceled. Gina’s appeared in Muscle & Fitness, ESPN BODY issue, Super Bowl commercials and definitely has a hardbody. If you disagree, let her know and see how far that gets you. Check out the “Satan” workout we featured a couple years ago to see Gina working out.

Actually, Gina is usually quite shy when she appears on the read carpet and in interviews but don’t let her coy demeanor fool you. Gina is a bad ass and her first film as a leading actress, HAYWIRE, looks to be a legit flick.

Gina is featured in Men’s magazine, GQ and it’s a pretty kick ass photo by Carlos Serrao. The feature highlights her MMA background and why she was the perfect for the role in HAYWIRE. Check out the larger version of the feature here. This is a great example of how hardbody women can be shown in classy manner and appeal to mainstream.

Props Gina Carano, Carlos Serrao & GQ magazine.

Jaime Baird Lands IRONMAN Magazine Swimsuit Cover

Jaime Baird is wicked smart, as she’s proved in her successful branding and marketing career. Add a hard body to those brains and you’ve got yourself a winner. “Winning” would describe Jaime’s year to a tee and to cap off a great year, she landed her first magazine cover. It’s not often you see a woman on the cover of a bodybuilding related magazine and especially not solo. Jaime managed to do both as she appears in IRONMAN magazine’s February 2012 issue. Props to Jaime for the cover and the crew at IRONMAN for the solid work.

Jaime is joined by fellow IFBB Pro Oksana Grishina in the 19 page swimsuit spectacular. Also featured in issue;  Jessica Ryan Jordan, Courtney Prather, Aspen Brandy Lea and Heather Clay. The issues shows the women in a variety of settings and swimsuits from Sexy Swimwear and Wicked Temptations. The suits are all pretty sweet and look good on the hard body women. The issue should be arriving in subscriber’s mailboxes this week and hitting store shelves around the first of the year. Until then here’s a peek at the cover and an inside image of Jaime Baird.

Stop by Jaime’s facebook page and tell her how you saw her on HARDBODY or tweet @JaimeBaird her and tell her congrats, be sure to include #hardbody with your tweet.

Amanda Latona Lands Another Cover

IFBB Bikini Pro Amanda Latona continues to heat things up on the newstands. Hitting shelves and mailboxes now is Amanda’s latest cover, her second this month! The May/June 2011 issue of Muscle & Fitness HERS features the stunning bikini pro and inside you’ll find a number of other hardbody women. Amanda is also featured on the current issue of FLEX magazine.

Check out Cindy aka the Sports Stylist’s kick ass shoe review in this issue and don’t forget the HARDBODY “Twist & Turns” in every issue.

Join the M&F HERS facebook page to stay updated on all the latest news and info with the magazine.

Amanda Latona’s A Cover Girl Once Again

IFBB Bikini Pro, Amanda Latona has been a stand out in the bikini division since turning pro at the NPC USAs. She’s been in the winner’s circle more than once but she brings more to the industry than a hot bikini body. Her striking good looks combined with her fun personality and never quit attitude propel her to greater heights.

Today Amanda celebrates her birthday but she received a gift a little early when she saw the newest FLEX Magazine cover. Amanda found out that she made the cover of the latest FLEX magazine, something only a few women have done. Usually, the women will appear in a small photo in the upper right hand corner but not this time. Latona is featured front and center. Pick up the issue to see more hardbody women from the NPC and IFBB.

Happy Birthday Amanda! This won’t be her last cover, you can bet on that.

East vs West – Muscle & Fitness HERS Cover Contest

This is a sweet opportunity for all IFBB Figure Pros. The New York Pro Figure has moved to May 28, 2011 and will be held in conjunction with the New York Pro Men’s Bodybuilding show. In previous years, the IFBB NY Pro Figure had been held during the Team Universe weekend. The show happens to fall on the same weekend as the California Pro Figure. What does this mean for competitors? A showdown of the winners from each contest to decides who will be on an upcoming issue of Muscle & Fitness HERS.

Considering how much the sport of figure has grown in recent years, it was only a matter of time before one coast wasn’t big enough for the IFBB Pro League. That’s why, on May 28, IFBB Pro League will feature the first-ever “East vs West Figure Showdown” by holding two contests simultaneously on separate coasts, where the overall winners will compete in an online vote for an upcoming cover of Muscle & Fitness Hers.

“It shows the strength of the figure division,” said IFBB Pro League President Jim Manion. “The sport has been growing in the NPC and IFBB Pro League for years, so this was a natural progression. I think it’s great that Muscle & Fitness Hers is doing this, it’s going to hype both contests even more. May the best woman win.”

In one corner is the California State Pro Figure Championships; in the other, the New York Pro Figure Championships. Whoever comes out on top in each of those contests will be featured in a first-ever online vote, presented by Muscle & Fitness Hers, where fans will be able to vote in a pose-by-pose showdown for the East Versus West Figure Showdown winner. Whoever wins will be flown out to Los Angeles for a photo shoot and cover try with Muscle & Fitness Hers magazine!

“The California Pro has always kicked off the season on the west coast, so to be able to bring more fanfare to the contest is always a good thing,” California Pro Figure Promoter John Lindsay said. “Obviously the growth of figure and the number of women competing today made an event like this possible, and I’m very happy to have the California Pro be a part of this.”

The New York Pro Figure Championships were traditionally held on the same night as the NPC Team Universe, which will take place on July 8-9 this year. The even was moved to May to coincide with the New York Pro Men’s Bodybuilding Championships, one of the most prestigious events on the IFBB Pro League schedule. “The New York Pro was the first pro figure show on the East Coast, so I’m very proud to be a part of this,” New York Pro Figure promoter Steve Weinberger said. “There are great figure girls all over the country and I’m proud my show is representing the East Coast. We will put on a great show.”

Tune in to all of the action at the California State Pro Figure Championships and the New York Pro Figure Championships on May 28, then vote for your favorite on Monday, May 31 on Muscle & Fitness Hers!

Justine Munro Newest Muscle & Fitness HERS Cover Girl

Congratulations to IFBB Bikini Pro, Justine Munro for landing the newest cover of Muscle & Fitness HERS magazine. Justine will be competing at the inaugural Bikini International next month in Columbus, Ohio.

The blonde, Canadian Cutie is definitely one to watch and has a solid chance of landing in the top six. She was 2nd in her Pro debut at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup and has the potential to hang with the best.

The new issue will be in stores the end of this month, just in time for the Arnold Sports Festival. Check out my “Twists & Turns” column and get some insight into the Arnold events.

Congrats Justine. Read more about Justine’s road to the Arnold in her HARDBODY.com Guest Blog.

Muscle & Fitness Hers Newest Cover – Sneak Peek

If you are a fan of the Muscle & Fitness Hers facebook group, you’ve already seen this. If you’re not “like” the group so you can info before everyone else around the magazine. The newest issue will be hitting stands soon and it features hard body Jessica Paxson-Putnam.

This isn’t Jessica’s first cover. Can anyone guess how many covers the IFBB Bikini Pro has been on in her career?

As always you can see HARDBODY.com’s column “Twist & Turns” in the issue. A subscription to the magazine would make a good holiday gift whether for yourself or for the fitness fanatic in your life.

Ladies Want This Body? The Situation Cover

I’m not sure what to make of the newest Men’s Fitness cover. The issue features MTV’s Jersey Shore’s Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino on the cover. One call out says, “How to drink, party and get abs like these!” Now that’s funny considering he has a pretty lame set of abs to begin with. Another call out on the cover says “Don’t Hate! Your girl wants his body, too!” HAHAHA! Comedy at it’s finest.

On one hand you could say well the guy might encourage people to work out after seeing him on the cover but does partying and drinking really lead to great abs? Not so much. I give the guy props for making the most of his reality show shtick but to grace the cover of a fitness magazine… That’s a bit much. I’m not hating, I’m laughing.

What do you think of "The Situation" on this Men's Fitness cover?

Ladies First – Reigning Female Olympians Featured in FLEX Magazine

The reigning Fitness Olympia, Ms. Olympia and Figure Olympia met up at Gold’s Gym Venice for a one-of-a-kind workout. Adela Garcia, Iris Kyle and Nicole Wilkins-Lee blasted their back and biceps for a FLEX magazine feature. The photos and article are currently featured in the new issue of the magazine and it’s one worth checking out. It’s a cool story and the first time a meet-up of this type has ever taken place.

You gain a sense of the women’s humor and personality in the feature. Each of the ladies have their own style of training and you’ll learn a variety of things from them. It’s a fun read.
