IFBB Figure Pro, Alea Suarez Signs with Fahrenheit Nutrition

Congratulations to IFBB Figure Pro and Hardbody Alea Suarez. Alea successfully made the transition from the Bikini to Figure division and competed in the 2011 Figure Olympia. She steadily refined her physique and added the muscle she needed to contend in Figure. Alea not only rocks a hard body on stage but also at home where she is a proud mom leading by example.

PRESS RELEASE:
Hutto, TX (PRWEB) January 11, 2012 -The Fahrenheit brand, emblazoned with flames that match its intensity for cutting-edge sports nutrition added boldly to its ranks on Monday, signing IFBB Figure Pro, Alea Suarez as their newest in an impressive line of sponsored athletes.

Winner at the 2009 NPC National Bodybuilding, Bikini, and Figure Championships, Suarez followed with back-to-back all-star campaigns in 2010 and 2011, notching eleven top-ten finishes, including an impressive third-place finish in IFBB’s 2011 Phoenix Pro Figure Competition.

Suarez made history in 2011, becoming the first competitor to ever successfully make the switch from bikini to figure competition as a professional.

Fahrenheit CEO William Mellors down-played her IFBB accomplishments, preferring to describe Suarez’s off-stage success as equally significant – calling the young fitness star ”the perfect role-model for our men and women.”

“The industry knows Alea is a star competitor,” said Mellors, “and her likeness will definitely be an asset in our digital and print marketing. But what I want our people to know is that Alea Suarez has forged historical success in this highly competitive industry while raising (and home-schooling ) three beautiful young children, maintaining a successful marriage for fourteen years, and running a successful business.”

Suarez takes the responsibility of her position seriously, noting, “I would like to be an inspiration, to encourage other women to take care of themselves so they can always be there for their families. Being a role model for my children is first and foremost, but I’ve realized the impact of being an IFBB professional. I have an opportunity to reach out to other women who find it difficult to fit fitness into their lives.”

As for her relationship with Fahrenheit Nutrition, she adds, “The team at Fahrenheit definitely gets it. Behind all of the hard work, there’s a definite science to this business, and the team that stays out front will see the greatest gains. I love the integrity Fahrenheit shows in their product line. On top of everything else, I’m an ACE Certified Fitness Instructor, so I really appreciate the fact that they have a great respect for fitness and for the recovery-side of training. Their enthusiasm for their own products is infectious, and I’m excited to be on-board. I look forward to representing Fahrenheit in 2012!”

2011 Bodybuilding.com Site Awards Announced

The votes have been counted and 2011 Bodybuilding.com site award winners are in! There are a few hardbody women who are on the list. Check out bodybuilding.com for their complete list of site winners.

2011 Bodybuilding.com Site Awards

Via Bodybuilding.com:
What Are The Site Awards?

Anyone who’s flexed or posed on a stage knows that judging bodies of work is a highly subjective endeavor. The same goes for the Bodybuilding.com Site Awards. Your favorite workout might not even break a sweat on the next fitness enthusiast; another person’s No. 1 recipe might seem ho-hum to you. But across 32 categories, we chose the content and talent that raised the bar in some meaningful way in 2011.

How Were They Chosen?
The winners fall among three main categories: Community Participation, Site Content, and Bodybuilding. Each category is further broken down into subcategories: most active forum member, best photo gallery, best writer, top pros, top amateurs, video, and much, much more.

Narrowing the field to a group of nominees was hard enough; selecting winners was agonizing. And, by agonizing, we mean, “We get paid to look at video clips of Amanda Latona all day?” We also canvassed industry experts for their take, incorporating their feedback. Of course, even those nominees who didn’t take the top prize still made their mark in 2011. See, that’s what’s great about fitness: Everybody wins.

So check out our picks. Disagree with any? Like we need to tell to let us know…

Fitness Competitor of the Year: Adela Garcia
Adela remained untouched as the queen of fitness with her 4th Fitness International and 6th Fitness Olympia titles this year. Fitness careers aren’t supposed to last this long, but Adela just gets better and better

Detroit Tops in Healthy Airport Restaurants

A report by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) revealed that many airport restaurants are adding healthier options to their menus. A group of PCRM dieticians reviewed the food served at some of the busiest airports in the United States and scored their findings. According to their report, the average score in 2001 was 57 percent. That number has risen to 83 percent, which is encouraging news to travelers.

healthy airport food

The score was was determined by dividing the number of restaurants offering at least one healthful option by the total number of restaurants. Airports that do not serve entrées, such as snack food kiosks and small coffee shops, were not included in the review. A restaurant was rated as “healthful” if it served at least one low-fat, high-fiber, cholesterol free breakfast, lunch, or dinner entrée.

WINNER: Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport received a score of 100 percent and topped the list for the third year in a row. The report states, “Despite the variety of healthful options at many airports, high-fat, high-cholesterol foods are still abundant. Terminals at Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta are clogged with eateries serving hot dogs, fried chicken, and pizza. Many restaurants at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport offer only burgers or other greasy bar food.”

Detailed Review
Following is a summary of what PCRM nutrition experts found at each airport, ranked from best to worst:

1. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport – 100%

Healthful Restaurants – 59
Total Restaurants – 59

Detroit tops the list for the third year in a row. It’s the only airport in the history of PCRM’s report to receive a perfect score—twice. Every restaurant at the airport offers at least one healthful entrée, such as a veggie burrito (hold the cheese) at Diego’s Mexican Cantina, the black bean burger at Slapshotz, and the hummus and veggie platter at the Heineken Bar.

2. San Francisco International Airport – 96%

Healthful Restaurants – 65
Total Restaurants – 68

San Francisco lags slightly behind Detroit in second place for the third year. But its score continues to ascend—up from 95 percent last year. Hungry travelers can enjoy the organic smoky split pea soup with a hummus and veggie wrap at the San Francisco Soup Company or a beet salad, tofu wrap, quinoa bowl, or udon noodles at Plant Café and Pinkberry.

3. Washington Dulles International Airport – 92%
Healthful Restaurants – 35
Total Restaurants – 38

Dulles was last year’s most improved airport. It gains just three points this year and climbs from fourth to third place. Options for health-conscious passengers include the grilled veggie sandwich (hold the cheese) at Harry’s Tap Room and pasta with marinara sauce at Famous Famiglia.

4. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport – 86%
Healthful Restaurants – 57
Total Restaurants – 66

Minneapolis gained a point this year, moving up from sixth place last year. Diners seeking cholesterol-free meals can enjoy the organic oatmeal (ordered with soymilk) or the roasted beet and pear salad (hold the cheese) at French Meadow Bakery and Café or the smoked tofu burrito or wrap with Cajun, Thai, or teriyaki flavors at 360 Gourmet.

5. (tie) Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport – 83%

Healthful Restaurants – 82
Total Restaurants – 99

DFW drops a point from last year, but moves up to fifth place. Health-conscious travelers can find healthful options, including the poblano, potato, and zucchini taco (hold the cheese) at Urban Taco and the falafel wrap or three-bean chili at Ufood Grill.

5. (tie) Las Vegas McCarran International Airport – 83%
Healthful Restaurants – 48
Total Restaurants – 58

Las Vegas continues its impressive climb, gaining six points and moving from 11th to fifth place. In 2010, it gained 11 points and moved up from its 2009 position in last place. A smoked tofu burrito is available at 360 Gourmet and a vegan wrap with hummus is available at more than 10 of the restaurants operated by the HMSHost, including Bar One, Home Turf
Sports Bar, and Wipeout Willy’s.

6. (tie) Denver International Airport – 82%
Healthful Restaurants – 46
Total Restaurants – 56

It was a turbulent year for Denver, which dropped six points—after a gain of eight points last year. Filling, low-fat choices include the veggie burger at the Boulder Beer Tap House, the portobello mushroom sandwich (ask for no cheese) at the Colorado Sports Bar, and the Colorado Sunshine Wrap or the tofu wrap at Itza Wrap! Itza Bowl!

6. (tie) Miami International Airport – 82%

Healthful Restaurants – 60
Total Restaurants – 73

Miami International Airport gained a point from last year, moving from eighth place to sixth place. Visitors can try the hummus platter at Beaudevin and the Unique veggie burger or the Asian veggie salad bowl at The Counter.

7. (tie) Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport – 81%

Healthful Restaurants – 46
Total Restaurants – 57

Phoenix gains a point, making a slight recovery from last year’s seven point drop. Just 46 of the airport’s 57 restaurants offer a healthful, cholesterol-free entrée. Low-fat meals include the chopped Mediterranean salad, hummus appetizer, and bruschetta (hold the cheese on each) at Barfly and the veggie rice bowl or burrito (hold the cheese on both) at Blue Burrito.

7. (tie) Charlotte Douglas International Airport – 81%
Healthful Restaurants – 39
Total Restaurants – 48

Charlotte is this year’s most improved airport. It made a huge jump from 12th place last year with a score of 72 percent. The airport still has room for improvement, but many of its eateries do offer a healthful, cholesterol-free meal option. Health-conscious passengers can choose the veggie burger at Stock Car Café and the portobello mushroom and red pepper sandwich (hold the cheese) at the Carolina Beer Co.

8. Orlando International Airport – 80%

Healthful Restaurants – 33
Total Restaurants – 41

Orlando maintains its 2010 score of 80 percent, but still climbs from ninth to eighth place. Hungry travelers seeking heart healthy fare should try the vegetarian lentil chili at McCoy’s Bar and Grill or the vegetarian sandwich at ZaZa’s Cuban Café.

9. (tie) Los Angeles International Airport – 76%
Healthful Restaurants – 42
Total Restaurants – 55

This celebrity hotspot drops from eighth to ninth place this year, losing five points from last year’s score. Healthful highlights include the Vegetarian Works pizza (hold the cheese) at Malibu Al’s, vegetable sushi rolls at Sushi Boy, and the roasted pepper and eggplant sandwich at Brioche Dorée.

9. (tie) Baltimore/Washington International Airport – 76%
Healthful Restaurants – 31
Total Restaurants – 41

BWI declined slightly from last year’s score of 79 percent. Thirty-one of the airport’s 41 eateries now offer low-fat, cholesterol-free entrées. The Silver Diner remains the best bet for savvy travelers. It offers a portobello vegetarian stir-fry with tofu, veggies, and wheat noodles in teriyaki sauce, as well as a summer salad and a veggie chili with kidney beans, mushrooms, carrots, and squash.

10. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport – 75%
Healthful Restaurants – 27
Total Restaurants – 36

This airport made the second biggest gain this year—eight points—helping it move out of its last place position in 2010. Hungry passengers should search for meals such as the Asian peanut-tofu wrap at Hudson Aero Mart and Hudson Euro Café or the balsamic garden panini with squash and zucchini (request no cheese) at National Airport Grill. Many other eateries only offer burgers and other greasy bar food.

11. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport – 71%

Healthful Restaurants – 64
Total Restaurants – 90

Atlanta’s airport—the world’s busiest—fell to last place this year. Terminals are clogged with restaurants serving hot dogs, fried chicken, and pizza. But travelers looking for healthful meals can find a few choices, including spicy tofu made with vegetarian broth at Asian Chao, burritos or tacos with black beans, pinto beans, or tofu crumbles and grilled veggies (hold the cheese) at Moe’s Southwest Grill, or Bistro Del Sol’s Mediterranean Trio: hummus, tabouli, and stuffed grape leaves.

New Olympia Qualifying Rules & The Hardbody Take

The IFBB Pro League issued the following Advisory Notice regarding qualify for the Olympia. This is a huge change in the competition and we will see a much, much smaller 2012 Olympia.

September 21, 2011

NEW OLYMPIA QUALIFYING RULES

After meetings held during the Olympia Weekend and following further discussions between IFBB Professional League and Mr. Olympia, LLC, beginning 2012, only the following competitors will qualify for the Olympia:

1. top four (4) in each division at the Olympia.
2. top three (3) in each division at the Arnold Classic/International;
3. top two (2) in each division at the New York Pro; and
4. 1st Place at all other competitions

The top four (4) in each division at the 2011 Olympia will qualify for the 2012 Olympia.

The remaining 2011 competitions are not affected.

The IFBB Professional League and Mr. Olympia, LLC may offer special invites.

Jim Manion
Chairman
IFBB Professional League

The Hardbody Take:

I have no issue with this as it applies to the men’s division. I think the male bodybuilders competing only one time a year hurts promoters and shows. I am not a big fan of this as it applies to the women. Why? Let’s say Erin Stern, Nicole Wilkins, Ava Cowan or Candice Keene decide to enter shows throughout the year. They are already qualified for the Olympia but if they win a show there will be no other qualifications awarded. That means we could see around 10 women total in the Olympia. It’s highly unlikely that they will enter the majority of shows in 2012 but there’s nothing stopping them. I think one person from every competition should qualify. That means if the first place competitor has qualified second should get the qualification. That would grant one competitor for each show to qualify for the Olympia. Awarding only the first place person and then opening the Olympia up to special invites is a little unsettling to me. It then opens up a can of worms of how they will be chosen, how many and who gets them. I totally understand and agree with the Olympia organizers wanting to cut down on the number of people qualifying for the show. Limiting the bikini, figure and fitness to just the winner makes me uneasy.

If the new rule were in place this year we’d see this line up for the Figure Olympia competition.
1. Erin Stern
2. Nicole Wilkins
3. Cheryl Brown
4. Candice Keene
5. Ava Cowan
6. Gennifer Strobo
7. Felicia Romero
8. Kristal Richardson
9. Courtney West
10. Heather Mae French

That would leave Alicia Harris who placed in the top six at the Olympia not even qualifying for the Olympia. Kristal Richardson and Heather Mae French did not compete in the 2011 Olympia. Teresa Anthony notched a win under her heels and would be in the mix. Courtney West finished tied for 16th, Felicia Romero was 15th, Cheryl Brown was 7th and Gennifer Strobo was 11th.

I haven’t done the breakdown on Bikini and Fitness but you get the idea. I think around 15 competitors for the Olympia is good as it’s intended to be the best of the best. We’ll see how this shakes out for the new year.

What’s your thoughts on the new Olympia qualifications?

NPC Physique Divisions: Top Two in Each Height Class to Turn Pro at Nationals

Those of you following the new women’s physique division take note. The 2011 NPC Nationals will have three height classes and the top two in each class will be awarded IFBB Pro League status. This year’s event will take place in Miami, Florida and sure to be another top notch event.

NPC National Bodybuilding, Figure, Bikini, Men’s & Women’s Physique Championships
The National Physique Committee of the USA, Inc., along with Stonecutter Event Promotions, Inc., announce that there will be a total of 12 IFBB Pro cards awarded in Men’s and Women’s Physique at the 2011 NPC Nationals being held in Miami Beach on November 18-19, 2011.

There are 3 height classes in Men’s Physique and the same Women’s Physique. The top 2 winners in each of those height classes are now eligible to receive their Pro Cards.

This is great for exciting new classifications of competition and up to the minute information! Entries can be found at www.nationalbodybuilding.com.

SAN Nutrition continues to show their support for the HARDBODY women in the industry and this time it comes via signing IFBB Pro Bikini competitor, Jessica Jessie. Jessica was the 2010 NPC Jr. Nationals overall bikini winner and has gone on to become one of the top pros in less than a year.

Matt Boldt & Jessica Jessie at the San booth.

Jessica is managed by Fitness Management Group (FMG) and they had this to share.

FMG is happy to announce that IFBB Bikini Pro Jessica Jessie has signed with SAN Nutrition as one of their endorsed athlete’s.  FMG & SAN have had a great working relationship the past 2 years with SAN hiring many of our athletes to work at their booth at various expos.  Earlier in the year owner Matt Boldt & I had correspondence regarding endorsement contracts & we are extremely happy that SAN has chosen Jessica Jessie to represent them.  Many thanks to Matt & Diana for all their support & help the past 2 years.

I caught up with Jessica after it become official. She has this to say.

I’m so excited and honored to be part of Team SAN. I first worked for them during the 2010 Olympia while I was competing.  SAN’s owner Matt was so kind and supportive to me that I immediately told my manager J.M. Manion that I wanted to work for them exclusively. I love SAN’s line of supplements and the way they have helped me change my physique. So when J.M. called me and told me SAN wanted to endorse me as an IFBB pro athlete I didn’t hesitate.  This is a dream come true!  I look forward to writing blogs on SANN.net about how SAN is helping me with my fitness journey and I can’t wait to do my first photo shoot for the company. With SAN on my side, I know the best is yet to come for me on and off the stage. Thank you Matt and Team SAN for giving me this opportunity of a lifetime! I will make you proud!

You can see Jessica compete at the IFBB NY Pro Bikini on May 28 and follow her on twitter @Bikinipro.
