Jen Hendershott Interview

Isaac Hinds | interviews | Wednesday, 24 June 2009, 7:41 am

IRONMAN magazine’s Ruth Silverman caught up with the reigning Fitness Olympia Champ, Jen Hendershott on her blog.

RUTH: Last March, after your second win at the Fitness International—and second Olympia win—you seemed headed into nothing-left-to-prove mode. Will we see you onstage at the Olympia in September?

I have nothing to prove, damn right! You know that I have not made this decision. If I do compete, it’s because I can, but I will bring the best Jen Hendershott that anyone has ever seen.  If I decide not to do it, then it’s because I am ready to move on. I do know this: Retirement is for old people, and I am not old!

Come on Hendershott, enough with the “I don’t know if I’m going to compete or not”. We know you’re going to come back and defend your title. You don’t want people thinking you’re old yet do you?

Check out the interview with Jen here.

Interview with Hardbody Amanda Latona

Photo via Amanda’s myspace.

There’s no denying the striking looks of hardbody Amanda Latona. I first noticed Amanda when she competed in the FLEX bikini model search contest at the Olympia. She carries herself with confidence and has no problem making you do a double take. Amanda recently competed at the NPC California State, where she took home top honors in the bikini tall class. Amanda’s no stranger to the limelight and while her fitness career is still catching steam, she’s already accomplished a world of things. She was kind enough to share a bit more about herself with us.

Name:
Amanda Latona

Currently Reside in:
Las Vegas

Born/Raise in:
Born in Pittsburgh PA.  Lived in Orlando Fl. for 12 years

What made you decide to do a NPC show?
I have been wanting to do an NPC show for awhile now. When I heard they were adding a bikini division I was super excited. I am not quite figure, so bikini was the perfect fit for me.

You were recently featured in Muscle & Fitness - how was that shoot for you?
To be totally honest, A dream come true. I have been reading and subscribing to the magazine for years. I started competing in ‘03 and have been wanting to be in Muscle & Fitness ever since. The shoot was at an awesome location in California. The whole experience was amazing start to finish. The hair, the make-up, the wardrobe the crew everything. I have always wanted to shoot with Ian Logan as well. When the feature and article came out, it was so much more than I ever expected. I was ecstatic!! Still am!

amandalatona.jpg
Amanda recently featured in Muscle & Fitness.

You’re no stranger to the stage having competed in many modeling and bikini contests, but you’ve also performed beyond a physique competition. Those may not know, you were/are a singer. How did you get started in that?
I have been singing as long as I can remember. Living in Orlando a lot of the bands were coming from there back during the whole pop explosion of boy/girl bands. I was in a girl group that traveled and toured Europe and The States. After that deal, I was signed solo to J-Records by Clive Davis. After that deal, I was signed to a record label in London. It just went from one thing to the next.

That’s awesome. Being signed by Clive Davis is no joke. Speaking of boy bands. How was it dating a backstreet boy? (Amanda dated Backstreet Boy AJ McLean for a stint years ago)
Pretty normal… except for the paparazzi, huge concerts, red carpets and award shows, lol. But we had a very normal relationship. We ate dinner at home, watched movies, played golf and went bowling. Then you would go to a huge sold out concert and it was surreal. You know this person so well, but the rest of the world sees them as a superstar. Fun.

Do you find that your experience from being on stage in front of thousands of people helps your confidence during a bikini contest?
Absolutely. I am extremely comfortable onstage and I feel that’s so important. I come alive when I am onstage and my personality really comes out. I just love it! Its my favorite time.

What advice do you have for other women out there looking to improve their stage presence?
Practice and experience. You can only be experienced in a field when you get experience in that field.

There’s a stereotype brewing that bikini girls don’t work out. Do you work out and if so how often?
5 to 6 days a week. Sometimes twice a day. I truly enjoy it, so its not a chore.

Do you eat healthy or is it ice cream and french fries for you?

My diet is always pretty clean. I only have a cheat meal if I want one, not a scheduled one. Like I dont do a “Sunday cheat day” or something like that. Usually I will plan a cheat day on a special occasion, like a birthday or holiday. But I like to stay around the same weight to be ready for photoshoots and things. I’ve found things always come up last minute. And its always after you had a cheat day of wings and ice cream and your bloated like a puffer fish, lol.

Mmmm wings. Good advice on being ready for a photoshoot.

What are your goals and aspirations for the fitness industry?

I would love to be in several areas of the fitness industry. Make a dvd, be a sponsored athlete, host a fitness show and own a gym and train from there. Haha, yes, lots of goals… but I think that’s a good thing ;)

If people want to find out more about you where should they visit? myspace.com/a_latona

Will you be signing autographs at the NPC USAs? Sure if someone wants one! Usually its just my mom though, lol.

Thanks for taking the time to share a bit more about yourself. Amanda will be competing at the 2009 NPC USAs held in Las Vegas, NV next month. Might we be looking at one of the next IFBB Bikini Pros? I certainly wouldn’t bet against it.

Advice from Last Year’s FLEX Bikini Model Search Winner Kathleen Tesori

Isaac Hinds | interviews, FLEXclusive, bikini | Monday, 18 May 2009, 8:59 am

Last year’s FLEX Bikini Model Search Winner, Kathleen Tesori shares her thoughts and a bit of advice for this year’s competitors in an interview with FLEXonline.com.

FLEX: What advice do you have for other girls looking to follow in your footsteps during this year’s contest?

Kathleen: I would say make sure that you don’t give up after the first month. Make sure that you’re sincere when you’re entering. People are more likely to vote for you. Get to know more about the industry so you’re more comfortable. Start getting in shape now. There’s no room for error once you’re on stage. Start getting focused.

Don’t forget the deadline for this year’s first round is quickly approaching. You still have a couple days to enter. Check out FLEXonline.com for more info.

Hardbody Profile: Andrea Watson Fast-Track To Success

Isaac Hinds | Hardbody Exclusive, interviews, NPC Jr USA | Thursday, 14 May 2009, 10:28 am
andreawatson.jpg
Andrea Watson looks to make it four in a row.

Andrea Watson is one of the NPC’s rising stars and on the fast-track to the IFBB pro ranks. She’s entered three shows and won not only her class but also the overall title in each of them. Andrea is heading to the NPC JR USA next weekend looking to make it four in a row and leave a pro. I caught up with Andrea days out from her the show and she shared a bit more about herself.

Currently Reside: Pensacola, FL

Occupation: Regulatory Analyst for Gulf Power Company (Subsidiary of Southern Company)

What made you decide to compete in Figure? I was always active growing up from cheering, running track, and lifting weights and thought about doing some fitness/figure modeling. I would always buy Oxygen Magazine, Muscle & Fitness Hers, Fitness Rx (just to name a few) just to look at all the amazing physique’s and competition photos. Last September I overheard someone talking about competing and I decided to buckle down and start training.

andrea2.jpg
Andrea all smiles and getting ready to grub.

Had you been to a competition before your first show? Yes, I attended the Panhandle Showdown in 2007 and 2008.

What’s your family think of it? My husband Brian is the one who always said that he thought I should compete and he’s been nothing but supportive (I think he enjoys it more than me!). He and my sister are my number one fans. At first my mom was against it until my family and my went to my first show and then realized that I was not a body builder but a “figure” competitor. Now they’re totally supportive.

What’s been the biggest learning experience for you thus far? I have learned that with hard work, dedication, and belief in yourself that anything is possible. I’ve learned who my true friends are - the ones who support me 110% and are happy that I am happy and successful. Also, I have learned that you must balance faith, family, work and training and put them all in perspective….in that order.

What supplements and food help get you through the dieting? Tight Curves protein shakes are what I look forward to the whole day. I drink one right before I go to bed. They are so delicious I feel like I am cheating!  Also, as strict as our pre-contest diets can be, I savor every moment of the two prunes and quarter of an apple I get with my breakfast!!! I know it sounds crazy. Also, I am allowed one cheat meal a week and it’s usually some kind of carb like pizza, lasagna, or cheeseburger… if I was allowed I would eat all three at one sitting…and a piece of chocolate or two…or three…

Any advice for others who are thinking about competing? You MUST join IFBB Pro Shannon Dey’s Team Bombshell! They give you all the tools you need: diet, cardio, exercise plans, suit selection guidance, hair and make-up, and posing advice.  Also, they offer camps for figure/fitness/bikini competitors where they go over everything with you and kick your butt with boot camp and training sessions in-between!  The team is the best thing that has happened to me as a figure competitor. I have made life long friends with the ladies on Team Bombshell. They are part of my family now.

Do you still have frozen eggplant parmesan in your freezer?  Lol! Yes, I ordered the eggplant parmesan for my cheat meal after the Pittsburgh Championships and I couldn’t finish it all so I took it back to Pensacola with me! So, yes it’s waiting for me in the freezer for my next cheat meal.

How did you get the trophy that was bigger than you home? Funny thing - Well I knew it was too big to get it on the plane (and I was scared they would charge me for another seat) so my sister Jaynie (who was on a later flight and who had time) had to use a wrench and disassemble it and put it in her carry-on! Hopefully she will bring it to Jr. USA’s in South Carolina so I can be re-united with it.

All the best in your next show and we’ll see you in Charleston. Thanks!

Sandy Williamson Chats NPC Bikini

Isaac Hinds | Industry News, interviews, misc, bikini | Monday, 04 May 2009, 2:29 pm

First let me remind you, I am NOT speaking on behalf of the NPC or claiming to be a NPC official. Simply sharing some of the things that came out of my conversation with someone who is and was pleased that I asked for clarification on a few things.

I had the opportunity to chat with Sandy Williamson for a few minutes while in Pittsburgh for the NPC PA Championships. Those of you who are new or don’t know who Sandy is she’s the IFBB Professional League Women’s Representative and the IFBB Professional League Head Judge for the women. Sandy also is the head judge at many of the NPC shows across the country. Lamest terms, if Sandy tells you something you should listen. We had a candid conversation after the show and I asked her for some more info on the Bikini Division. She was kind enough to answer my questions and clarify a few things. Here are a few things that came from our conversation.

As I have stated here on hardbody and Sandy agrees with me… The judges can only judge what is on stage and in front of them. There have been several shows where the number of participants have been few. Every competitor that entered may be below the level bikini should be about on the National and Pro level however the judges still have to award a winner. Just because you won the Podunk Classic does NOT mean you will get a pro card at the National level. Keep this in mind when looking at the results of some smaller, local NPC shows. It’s not the judges fault no one of quality entered and they can only judge what’s on stage.

Sandy mentioned the level of quality in the bikini division at the PA Championships had been some of the best she’s seen to date. Myself, J.M. Manion and Bill Comstock (all photographers who have seen many events already this year) also agreed. When you go to a number of shows every month you have more to compare it to than the casual fan or one time participant. I asked if she felt the winner of this show and the Arnold were in line with what the bikini division should be about. Sandy did feel these were the two best examples but also felt there were a few other women (in both shows) who also are in line with what a look she likes for the bikini division. Ali Sonoma was the winner of the Arnold Classic and Jaime Baird was the winner of the PA championship.

Kristal Marshall, who placed second in the bikini short class at the Arnold Classic, has a physique many feel looks good for bikini. I like Kristal’s look and think it is in line with what a bikini physique should look like. Sandy mentioned she really liked Kristal’s physique but felt she had a little too much muscle. The one thing the judges are trying to do is make a clear distinction between figure and bikini. If you look like you could win in figure you won’t (or shouldn’t) win in bikini. There have been examples where this hasn’t been the case at some shows but rest assured it will not be the case on the National level where pro cards are awarded. Bikini is new to the judges too so cut them a little slack as they work through the first year. Like figure, give it some time to grow and develop into something. If you’re a bikini competitor with too much muscle you may find yourself disappointed with your placings.

jaime.jpg
Jaime Baird overall bikini winner.

One thing I noticed with the bikini division thus far is the presentation. I asked Sandy if she liked how Jaime Baird presented herself and she thought it was good. Ali Sonoma also presented herself well at the Arnold. As I’ve stated here you do NOT want to come out looking like a deer in the headlights but you also don’t want to be over the top and come across as trashy. There is a different between working the stage with a couple of model poses, popping a hip, looking over your shoulder from behind vs looking like you’re about to climb up a pole and take your clothes off. Think of it almost as doing a photo shoots where you do a couple model poses, hand on your hip and present with confidence. Sandy shared that this is still being worked out and as more shows take place, the judges will be able to give better feedback on what is the best way to present your physique in bikini. She felt just standing there like a figure competitor relaxed did not do as good of job as doing a more model type of pose.

Probably the best bit advice Sandy shared was in regards to suit choice. She is all for women getting a suit off the rack and not having to spend hundreds of dollars on it. This was a big complaint and the main reason why the one piece went away. Competitors spending tons of money on suits became a huge burden. She mentioned Miss California’s suit in the Miss USA contest… How it tied to the side and despite it being white (which is usually a no-no for competitors) it looked very good. Sandy liked a suit like this and how well it fit Miss California. It could be a suit that was purchased off the rack at a store. The big point though and she really stressed was for women to have a suit that fits them. If you buy a suit off the rack have it altered to fit your physique. I noticed this with a couple competitors at the PA show, where the top was too big for them or the bottoms were too small and it didn’t flatter their physique. She couldn’t stress enough how important it is to have a flattering, fitting suit. If you want to bling a suit out you can but again it should fit your body and compliment your physique.

misscalifornia.jpg
Notice the fit on Miss California’s suit.

Lastly, pay attention to the small details like your hair, make up and skin. You do not want to look depleted and have unhealthy looking skin. Do not come in shredded to the bone and expect to do well. The judges want a healthy looking physique. If your hair and makeup are not flattering to you it will also hurt you in comparisons to someone who does.

Sandy will be the head judge for the California Pro on May 23rd. If you are competing in that show or will be there and have more questions feel free to ask her there. The same weekend the NPC JR USA will take place in Charleston. She assured me that the head judges for that show (where pro cards will be awarded) are on the same page as her as to what look they are after.

Nashville’s Got a New Star

Isaac Hinds | IFBB shows, interviews, Orlando Pro | Thursday, 23 April 2009, 7:23 am
valinterview.jpg
Nashville Figure Star Valerie Haines

You won’t read about this woman singing at the Grand Ole Opry. Nah, that’s of little interest to IFBB Figure Pro, Valerie Haines. While belting it out with the likes of Dolly Parton may not Valerie Haines forte, putting together an impressive pro figure physique is. Last weekend Valerie took the stge in Orlando where she made quite the statement. Valerie placed 6th out of a competitive field of 28 at the Europa Show of Champions. It’d been a few months since we last saw Val, so I caught up with her to see what she’s been up to.

Where ya been Val and why the time off since your last show?

I wanted to make some significant changes and I knew I had to take some time off to do so…and I think I did. My last show prior to the Europa was 2007 NY Pro where I placed 12th.

I’d agree you did make some significant changes. Do you feel it was the time off that helped?
Absolutely. I feel like I “rebuilt” my physique in a way. I am THRILLED with the results too!

I didn’t see you sporting any bags of asparagus this time - did you make any changes to your diet or training since you last competed?
LOL…That picture is classic Isaac! Actually, I did change my prep diet quite a bit this time around. My cardio was less intense and I did very low to no carbs throughout my prep. I maintained a high fat content and it seemed to work well for me.

Did you diet longer than usual or how long was your prep for this show?
I didnt prep any longer than I usually do. I always start at 16 weeks out. I did incorporate a second cardio session up until about 6 weeks out this time around. But thats the only thing I did differently.

Are you going to jump into another show or enjoy the summer and hit a later event?
I am going to take a SMALL break, not like the last break. Believe me, I have a fire inside me now and I will be back. Look for me at the Kentucky Pro in November!

What’s your occupation besides being a Pro Figure competitor?
Scheduling Coordinator for a dental office

So, do you notice people’s teeth first?

LOL… Actually, yes I do! that’s the first thing I see.

Congratulations Valerie. We’ll look for ya in the fall on the Kentucky stage.
Thank you.

See more photos of Valerie from the Orlando Pro show here.

SALUTE! Jessica Anderson is Heat’n up NPC Bikini

Isaac Hinds | NPC Show, interviews, jacksonville pro, bikini | Thursday, 16 April 2009, 8:21 am

NPC Bikini competitor, Jessica Anderson is one to watch! This Florida beauty is one for one in NPC bikini competitions and looking for win number two this weekend in Orlando. I caught up with her as she heads into this weekend’s events and she shares a bit about herself.

jessicaanderson.jpg
Hardbody Jessica Anderson backstage after her win.

Reside:
Jacksonville, FL

Occupation:
US Navy Corpsman

Number of times competing?
Only once so far! I won my division in Women’s tall Bikini and went on to win overall in women’s bikini in the Jacksonville Physique sponsored by Dexter Jackson and Premier Physiques.

How often do you work out?
It really depends on what I’m training for and what my goals are. Usually about 3-4 times a day if I’m about to compete. But when I’m not doing a show, around twice a day. Cardio in the AM and I lift in the PM.

What’s your favorite body part to train?
My arms.

Do you take long walks on the beach?
Haha, how about a long run on the beach?

Let me get back to you on that.

Have you ever been fishing in the dark?
Actually YES I honestly can say I have! My parents own a house off a canal next to the Gulf of Mexico. So before I joined the Navy back in High school,my friend and I would sit on the dock and sometimes have fishing contests to see who catch the most fish!

What made you decide to compete in NPC Bikini?

Well, honestly I started out wanting to compete in Figure. But after Dexter and Gale suggested competing in Bikini I thought “why not!?” I think eventually I will consider crossing over into to wonderful world of Figure because I truly admire the athleticism behind it and not to mention that level of muscularity is so beautiful to me. But I have plenty of time to cross that road! I’m excited to compete in Bikini because it’s new, fun, and something I’ve never done before! What more could you ask for?

Check back next week to see photos from our photo shoot in Florida!

Stacy McDowell (formerly Simons) Retires

Isaac Hinds | IFBB shows, Hardbody Exclusive, Industry News, interviews, misc, NY PRO | Tuesday, 14 April 2009, 7:13 am

Those of you who followed the NY Pro Fitness over the weekend saw Stacy McDowell (formerly Simons) in one round of action. Stacy competed in the one-piece round but didn’t make it back for any other comparisons. I received a call from Stacy yesterday and she shared the news around what happened at the show and her future plans.

stacy.jpg
Stacy on stage for the last time in her IFBB Pro career.

During last weekend’s NY Pro Fitness, Stacy experienced extreme pain in her lower back which prevented her from continuing in the competition. She felt the pain while being compared in the first round of the competition. After the first round she tried to stretch it out and fight through it but it wasn’t meant to be. This wasn’t how Stacy wanted to go out but there comes a point in time when you have to listen to your body. Unfortunately for Stacy, that time arrived in the middle of the show. Years of gymnastics and competitive diving has taken it’s toll on her body. The pain her back was too much to bare and forced her to withdraw from the competition.

Stacy achieved IFBB pro status at the 1997 NPC Nationals. Throughout her twelve year career she found the highest success in the European shows. Twice Stacy won the European Pro Fitness Cup (2003 & 2004). She was runner-up at the 2005 Europa Super show and competed in last year’s Fitness Olympia. Stacy not only qualified numerous times for the Fitness Olympia but she was also invited to the prestigious Fitness International on several occasions. She’s probably best known for her incredible and freaky flexibility.

What’s next for Stacy? She tells me while a little disappointed that her competitive career is over she will stay involved in the fitness industry. She currently helps prep & train women for shows and says that’s more nerve wracking than competing herself. Recently married  (hence the name change), her husband isn’t complaining about the end of dieting and training. Nope. She can no longer use the “I’m too tired” excuse when he asks for some McLove’n.

Congratulations on all your success Stacy. All the best in the next chapter in your life. Your freakish flexibility routines and bubbly smile will be missed on the pro stage.

Stacy at the 2007 West Palm Beach Pro, where she placed third and qualified for the Fitness Olympia.

Canadian Waples Set to Debut in Orlando

Isaac Hinds | IFBB shows, Hardbody Exclusive, interviews, Orlando Pro | Monday, 13 April 2009, 6:36 am

IFBB Figure Pro Natalie Waples will be making her pro debut this weekend in Orlando. Natalie turned pro last fall at the North American, one of the few shows Canadian residence can compete and reach IFBB pro status. I caught up with the Canadian Figure competitor today and here’s what she had to say…

natalie.jpg
Natalie Waples pro debut this weekend.

What have you worked on since turning pro last fall?
In terms of training I have been working hard at gaining some size in my back and delts (I naturally have very narrow shoulders so developing my delts have always been a challenge).  On the promtion side of things I have signed an agreement to promote Florida-based True Healthy Products and have also been spearheading the Serious About Fitness Fit Camps in Canada. I have also been shooting regualrly with Oxygen Magazine and working on my website.

What do you feel separates you from the other rookies as well as veterans in the Orlando show?
I have really tried to differentiate myself from other competitors in that I produce my own training DVDs, run several fitness camps, do promtional work for various sponsors and magazines (Oxygen, Inside Fitness, MuscleMag) and also offer consulation services and posing clinics for clients/competitors in Ontario, Canada. I feel this experience has really helped me to become a well rounded competitor in my understanding of the industry and helping others achieve their fitness goals. Plus, I’m Canadian eh!

That last line sums things up. LOL! Say no more. Okay just kidding Canada.

Do you feel it’s a challenge getting any love in the states being from Canada?
This will be my fourth show in the US (I’ve competed twice at the North Americans and also once at the Arnold Amateur) and have consistently been well received by the judges, so if I can gain some exposure south of the border, and meet more fellow competitors, I don’t see it being an issue.  Plus I have my coach Doug Schneider, fitness pro Mindi O’Brien and some friends from Canada all at this show, so I will definitely be keeping my eye out for them in the crowd.

What’s your goal as an IFBB Pro - not just this show but in general?
I would like to use my professional status to help promote the companies I work with (Interactive Nutrition, Natural Nutrition and True Healthy Products), as well as the Serious About Fitness Fit Camps. My next goal is to qualify for the Olympia and make the most out of my time on stage and the whole competitive experience. I love competing!

Can we expect to see you compete in any other shows?
I will be attending both the California and NYC Pro shows as well as one other this year (depenedent on how the Spring shows go). I know that is a tall order but I plan on making the most out of my rookie year.

When someone says Natalie Waples - what do you want them to think of or be known for?
I hope to promote a healthy, natural, athletic image and for fitness enthusiasts to feel comfortable approaching me with their questions.  I am going to ride this wave as long as I can, and have fun doing it.

Thanks Natalie and best of luck in your debut.
Thanks Isaac!

The Orlando Show of Champions will take place this weekend in Orlando, Florida. Stay tuned for more updates and interviews this week.

Don’t Put Shannon Meteraud Out to Pasture Yet

Isaac Hinds | IFBB shows, interviews, New York Pro | Friday, 10 April 2009, 10:27 pm
shannon.jpg
Shannon shows she still has ups.

Shan-na-na, Shan-na-na,  HEY HEY HEY Goodbye… Hold up. Wait a minute. Shannon Meteraud may be a veteran to the stage but don’t start singing her goodbyes just yet. She placed sixth at the Fitness International and is looking to take home top honors in the NY PRO Fitness. I caught up with Shannon as she heads into the Big Apple.

What have you worked on since the Arnold?

Trying to keep my sanity!!!!! Actually, just been doing the same ole thing. I was happy how the Arnold went, so we just kept pluggin’ away. Same ole hours of cardio and those wonderful days of routine practice!

Were you surprised to you qualified for the Olympia?

I wouldn’t say surprised. My goal was to make top 6 so I was thrilled with that accomplishment. Getting the “O” qualification out of the way was just a bonus.

Has it been hard staying on a diet since the Arnold?

YES!  I have my 2 girls and it’s Easter time so there is a ton of candy floating around the house. I had to make Easter Bunny frosted cookies for my daughters Easter party and not lick my fingers  I’ve been dieting since November! Orange Roughy and asparagus just aren’t cutting it., but I’m hangin in there.

What’s the goal for the NY Pro Show?
Well you know everybody always trains to win so of course that is my goal!

How’s the hip or is it the knee, whatever fragile bone that gave out last year? Kidding but seriously how is your knee?
Actually Dear Isaac, it’s my knee/leg. I broke my tibia, bruised my patella tendon, and partially tore my ACL. And let me point out that all the YOUNG chickies are tearing ACLs left and right. Anyway, it’s doing fine thanks for asking. I feel it from time to time, but don’t put me out to pasture yet.

Thanks Shannon and good luck in NYC!

Nicole Wilkins Lee Heads to The Big Apple

Isaac Hinds | IFBB shows, interviews, New York Pro | Friday, 10 April 2009, 8:55 am
nicolelee.jpg
Nicole Wilkins-Lee returns to the NY Fitness stage.

IFBB Pro Nicole Wilkins-Lee is heating things up on and off the stage. She competed at the Fitness International, shot with FLEX magazine for their annual swimsuit issue and is headed to the Big Apple in hopes of qualifying for the Olympia. WHEW! Check out what Nicole had to share days out from tomorrow’s New York Pro Fitness.

How’s it feel to no longer be a rookie in fitness?
It feels great! Each year I learn more about myself and have a better idea of what to expect against the best girls in the world. I am much more comfortable onstage although I still get butterflies just before I walk out!

Did you enjoy competing in fitness over figure at the Arnold?
You know that I am going to say that I love them both! What an honor just to be on the Arnold stage. I love the competition but nothing can beat the rush of performing a fitness routine in front of a huge crowd.

What have you worked on since the Arnold?
I will be coming into NY about 3-4lbs leaner and we added a few parts to my two minute routine to speed it up a bit. I feel great and right where I need to be. NY has been good to me in the past :)

Nicole turned pro at the Team Universe by winning the overall fitness AND overall figure there.

Fav supplement to use while dieting?
Whey protein and Glutamine

Goal for the NY Pro?
TO WIN! I’m not gonna lie! I train to win and I want that Olympia qualification again.

Life of a married woman any different than the single life?
Alan and I have been together for 6 years and he has been with me from the very beginning of my career. He is a huge support and comes with me to every show. It is nice to be with someone who understands and enjoys the fitness lifestyle. We own a business together and I couldn’t imagine my life without him! He’s awesome ♥

Did you give Adam Sandler any training tips?

Haha! He was such a nice guy! But to be honest I think he was more interested in Jay Cutler than us girls. He approached Jay first and was congratulating him on his accomplishments and we were all standing there with our mouths open! Holy crap! He was like a foot away from us! Jess, Erin and I asked if we could take our pic with him and he was totally down to earth. He looked like he was wearing pjs though - I guess when you are the Sandman you can do whatever you want right!?

Word is that you’ll be doing figure in Orlando - right?
Yep - I’m going for a double qualification again ;) I need to get the heck out of the snow here in Michigan!

Kick some butt in NYC Nicole.

Durkin a Force to be Reckoned With

Isaac Hinds | IFBB shows, interviews, New York Pro | Thursday, 09 April 2009, 5:14 pm
tinadurkin.jpg
IFBB Fitness Pro Tina Durkin

I caught up with IFBB Fitness Pro Tina Durkin days out from the NY PRO Fitness competition. Check out what the rising fitness star had to say.

Currently live in: Alexandria, VA (Originally From Ohio)

You’re a mom right, how many children do you have? One (Evelyn-5)

What’s your occupation besides a pro fitness competitor?
Personal Trainer/US Air Force Reserves, E-6 is my rank

How did you get into competing? I watched Ms. Fitness on ESPN back in HS and said “I can do that”… it just took me 12 years the guts to try. I then started in WTF to warm up. I actually attended Jenny’s PHAT camp and she told me about Mike Davies. He basically had to talk me into trying a NPC show… and well you know the rest. I met Mike in 2006.

What did you do different this year from year’s past to improve your physique? DIET DIET DIET… LOL! I actually feel like I’m stronger now that I’ve had back surgery. I’m more careful working out now but I’m able to do so much more. My back problem did not happen overnight so I’m sure it kept me from performing my best in the past.

Favorite supplement while prepping for a show? REDLINE RTD

Goals for New York Pro Fitness?
Hey, I’m in it to win it!!!! No really, I just wanted to get my name back out there and have fun. I would like to clean up my routine and work on my stage presence. I feel a little rusty being off a year.

Socks with Sandles or no socks? OMG… †if you wear socks with sandles I would kill you!!! (So NO WAY)

Good luck in New York Tina!

NPC Northern Colorado Bikini Winner - Yvonne Vaicius

Isaac Hinds | NPC Show, interviews | Monday, 06 April 2009, 1:06 pm

The NPC Bikini is beginning to take shape as the competitive season gets into full swing. The judges have to judge what is in front of them on that day. If only 5 or 6 women enter the show they still have to decide on a winner. This is no knock on any of the women who have won thus far in the bikini division but I feel we won’t know what the bikini division will look like until the NPC JR USA. Pro cards will be awarded and the winners there should set the standard of what bikini should look like at that event. To date Ali Sonoma was, in my opinion, what the a NPC Bikini winner should look like.

One competitor who hopes to be what the judges are looking for on the National level is Yvonne Vaicius. Yvonne was crowned the NPC Northern Colorado champ last Saturday. I caught up with the bikini champ to learn a bit more about her. Does she work out or does she eat fries and slap on a bikini for the show?

npcnorthernbikini.jpg
Yvonne Vaicius - NPC Bikini Winner

Name: Yvonne Vaicius

From: From Bogota, Colombia but reside in Denver, CO

How often do you work out? I work out 5 days a week and do gymnastics once a week

How long did you diet for the show? I dieted for 11weeks for this show

How much cardio did you do for the show?
I was doing cardio 45 min a day every day

What’s your next competition? Next competition is probably going to be Jr Nationals in Chicago.

Yes, people not all bikini competitors eat like crap and don’t train. I was happy to hear that Yvonne dieted and trained for the competition. She works outs, trains and eats healthy yet doesn’t have the same amount of muscle as a figure competitor.

Hendershott: “I always win the routine round, so I don’t worry about the routine round”

Isaac Hinds | IFBB shows, Arnold Classic, interviews | Wednesday, 11 March 2009, 12:27 pm

IFBB Pro Fitness competitor, Jen Hendershott won her second Fitness International crown on Friday night. There’s no disputing Jen is one of the busiest pros in the industry. She’s been able to take her success on stage and turn into into a business away from it. Jen recently did an interview with the Ashland Times Gazette where she is quoted as saying, “”I always win the routine round, so I don’t worry about the routine round.” I don’t question the fact that Jen is one of the most entertaining fitness pros around and she is awarded accordingly. I gotta question that comment though. Does that mean Hendershott is so confident that she feels unbeatbale in the routine rounds? Hendy doesn’t ALWAYS win the routine rounds. Oksana Grishina scored a 7 and Jen scored a 17 in the 2007 Olympia two-minute routine.

What do you think… Is Hendershott getting overconfident or is she just in not worrying about the routine rounds? Will anyone step up and challenge her at the Olympia? When Hendershott feels she doesn’t have to worry about any competition in the routine rounds do we get the best Jen Hen performance? She is clearly ahead of the pack when it comes to the routines. I’m a fan of Jen’s routines despite her doing more dancing than strength moves most times. Let’s see who can up their game and give Jen a run for her money in the routine rounds come September.

Don’t Forget About “Stealth” Johnson

Isaac Hinds | IFBB shows, Arnold Classic, interviews, videos | Sunday, 01 March 2009, 9:37 am

IFBB Fitness competitor Tanji “Stealth” Johnson that has been flying under the radar heading into the Fitness International. She had to sit out the 2008 International due to an injury but returned to the Olympia stage where she finished 5th. When I saw Tanji at the IRONMAN Expo she was noticeably smaller than I’d seen her in years past. Unlike bodybuilders, smaller isn’t a bad thing. Tanji carries a good amount of muscle and for her to be in the top call outs she has nail her conditioning. It looks like Tanji is definitely going to bring a smaller, more conditioned physique to the Arnold this year. While most people are talking about Jen, Tracey and Julie (myself included) you can’t rule out Tanji. She definitely has the potential to be in the top three.

tanji.jpg
Tanji practicing her routine.

Check out the video of Tanji training and discussing her nutrition, workouts and more on bodybuilding.com. As you can see at the four week point she looks to be in great shape. Watch out for Stealth at the Fitness International she could sneak up on a few people.

Former UFC Ring Girl Ali Sonoma Enters New Bikini Division

Isaac Hinds | Hardbody Exclusive, Arnold Classic, interviews, MMA, bikini | Saturday, 28 February 2009, 10:31 am
alisonoma.jpg
Ali Sonoma will participate in the first Arnold Bikini Division.

San Diego’s Ali Sonoma is a perfect example of what the new bikini division brings to the table. Striking good looks, toned physique but not overly muscular. She works out, eats right and has aspirations of making a difference in the world of fitness. I had a chance to chat with Ali as she heads into her first competition. What made this former UFC ring girl enter the Arnold Bikini competition? Find out the answers to this as well as what it’s like dating one of the top UFC fighters below.

You currently live in Cali but where did you grow up?
St. Louis, MOali2.jpg

How many NPC competitions have you competed in?
The Arnold Classic next week will be my very first one! I’m very excited!

What made you decide to compete in the Arnold Bikini Competition?
I was at Mr. Olympia last year and was really amazed at how the competitors looked. I saw the figure women on stage and was just in awe. I said to myself, I would love to do that someday, it would be such a rewarding self challenge to get your body at it’s best. So I went for it. I found a great trainer, (Kim Oddo), and he told me about the new bikini division. I started training immediately.

What are your competitions goals this year?
I would love to get my pro card, become a spokemodel for a few supplement /nutrition companies and continue to look and feel my best.

You mentioned you enlisted the help of Kim Oddo with your diet/nutrition, how has that experience so far?
I couldn’t have done it without Kim! I wouldn’t have a clue where to begin without a professional, especially one of the best in the business. He laid out everything-my diet, supplements, times I should eat, portion control, lifting schedule, etc.

I read somewhere that you like to fish and shoot guns, is that true?
Ha ha, sure is! I’m from Missouri so I’m naturally a country girl at heart and I’m not afraid to get a little dirty.

Some people may not know but you were a ring girl for the UFC. What was that experience like?
It was a great experience for me. I was with them for a year and traveled to many places. I am still a huge fan of the fights and always will be.

Do you get nervous thinking about the competition or is it a walk in the park for you now?
I might be a little nervous considering it’s my first one, but I think I’ll be more excited than anything.

Do you weight train?
Yes.

What a bikini competitor that works out? Get out. What type of training do you follow?

I weight train just about everyday. I alternate upper and lower body. I do light-med weight, high reps, at high intensity. I love lifting, so much more than cardio! ali1.jpg

Do you work out solo or with a training partner?
I work out solo and I take it very seriously. I go to the gym to train, sweat, and work hard. I don’t like any distractions.

How is it dating a UFC fighter (Ali is dating UFC Fighter Diego Sanchez)… Does he help motivate you in the gym or can be a distraction while preparing for your own show?
Diego Sanchez is not just a UFC fighter, he’s so much more. He’s my very best friend and I have learned so much from him since being with him. He’s very knowledgeable in nutrition, training, diet, meditation, recovery, supplements, I could go on and on. I started eating all organic food because of him, and started taking up better habits like cutting aspartame, anything artificial, anything processed, etc. It’s a plus being with him because he helps to train and motivate me-yesterday we did sprints until our legs were about to fall off. ha ha! He believes in me and I in him. I am always the loudest, craziest one at his fights and he’ll be right there watching me on stage as my number 1 fan.

A number of women have taken up MMA classes are you one of them or leave that to Diego?

I love kickboxing and would love to someday take up Muy Thai and Jui-Jitzsu. I love to feel strong.

What do you plan on eating after the competition - birthday cake? (Ali’s Birthday falls on the Arnold Classic Weekend)
Ha ha, YES! Chocolate and some red wine! It’s been so long!ali3.jpg

What advice do you have for women out there thinking of doing their first competition?

Get a great trainer! You get what you pay for.

If people want to find out more info about you where should they go?
My myspace page is the best way to contact me www.myspace.com/alisonoma

Any one you want to thank or give a shout out to?
First and foremost, I want to thank God for blessing me in so many ways-all the glory goes to him, the Creator. I would also like to thank Kim Oddo, my family, fans and the love of my life Diego.

Thanks Ali and best of luck in Columbus.
Thank you.

The Arnold Bikini competition will take place in Columbus, Ohio on Thurday, March 6th. Competition starts at 7pm.

Greenwood is a Go

Isaac Hinds | IFBB shows, Arnold Classic, interviews | Tuesday, 24 February 2009, 7:57 am

IFBB Fitness Pro Tracey Greenwood has been keeping a relatively low profile going into the Fitness International. What? Greenwood quiet? What the hell is going on, is she ok? HA. Yes, she is doing very well. I caught up with Tracey yesterday and she tells me she is ready to go. She tells me she’s the smallest she’s ever been, in great shape and has a new routine. Tracey sounds confident that this will be her best Arnold performance to date. She’s coming off her best year as a pro finishing second to Jen Hendershott at the 2008 Olympia. When I asked her if she would beat Jen this time she said, “Isaac that’s not for me to decide you know that. I will bring my best and that’s all I can do.”

We’ll see how Tracey fairs next Friday but you can count on her being in the mix.

A few months later she was on the Olympia Figure stage knocking on the door of a top ten finish. Now she heads into the Arnold Classic to compete in the Figure International. I caught up with Lenay as she heads into one of the most prestigious shows in the IFBB.

Jen Hendershott Arnold Interview.

Check out the latest interview with Fitness Olympia Champ, Jen Hendershott on bodybuilding.com. In the interview Jen sounds off on a number of things and you can tell she has a fire lit under her ass to win the Fitness International. Jen responded to one question with, “I feel sorry for those who have to witness this craziness on stage cause its an ego crusher for most of my fellow competitors. They think I am nuts and I really don’t care.”

Hendershott goes on to thank Michael Phelps for the motivation in 2008. She says, “I am my own driving force and Michael Phelps, THANK YOU for reminding me of things I have forgotten. U Rock!” An amusing response to thank the multiple gold medal winner for what she had forgot, given that he was recently seen taking a hit from a bong.

Maybe she is a little nuts but as she says, she doesn’t really care. Check out the entire interview here.

Oksana Grishina Preps for Her Arnold Return

Isaac Hinds | News, photo shoot, Arnold Classic, interviews | Tuesday, 03 February 2009, 6:37 am

I caught up with Russian superstar Oksana Grishina last weekend in Las Vegas as she prepares for her return to the Arnold stage. Oksana made her Arnold debut last year but placed out of the top six. Known for her incredible routine, she is back and ready to redeem herself. Some people think that because her routine is slower paced it isn’t as difficult. I disagree on that sentiment and would challenge anyone to perform the routine she does. Her moves are precise and the years of gymnastic training is obvious. She assures me she will have a different routine at the Arnold and has worked on improving her physique. Oksana’s English has greatly improved and she’s able to communicate very well now. Here are a couple photos from Saturday’s shoot.

Arnold Classic: Learn a Little About IFBB Figure Competitor Latisha Wilder

Isaac Hinds | IFBB shows, Arnold Classic, interviews | Friday, 09 January 2009, 3:01 pm
latisha.jpg
IFBB Figure Pro Latisha Wilder

The Arnold Classic web site has a little profile on IFBB Figure Latisha Wilder. Latisha will be competing in the Figure International.

Latisha Wilder is an Arnold Sports Festival success story. She attended one year, became inspired, and is now one of the best professional “figure” athletes in the United States.

Wilder, 33, of Dublin, Ohio, hopes to compete in her fifth Figure International at the 2009 Arnold Sports Festival. She finished seventh last year after a career-high fourth place finish in 2007. She first competed in Figure in 2005, when she finished fifth.

“I’ve competed in Olympia four times and the Arnold Classic four times and both are really special and privilege to compete in,” said Wilder, a personal trainer and track coach at Hasting Middle School in Upper Arlington. “The Olympia you have to qualify for and the Arnold Classic you have to be invited to compete.

“Being invited is really special because you know that the promoters really value what you stand for and what you bring to the stage as a competitor. It makes you feel good about the hard work that you put in and it makes you feel very special.”

HARDBODY Exclusive: Interview with Fitness Icon Monica Brant

Monica Brant heading back to the Figure International.

I caught up with Monica Brant moments after she received the news of her Arnold Invite. Monica will take the stage for the first time since the 2007 Olympia at the 2009 Figure International. Hardbody.com fans voted “YES” in a big way when asked if you’d like to see Mo return to the Arnold stage. Check out what Mo had to say about retiring, her fans and more…

How did you find out you made the invite list?
ISAAC HINDS! He is sooo fast!

Does this change your meal plans for Christmas?
Well, I’ll just have to make sure I get in my cardio and workouts… Since I am sitting around 133lbs right now it shouldn’t be too much to bring it on down for stage by end of FEB!

Not that it matters but what are you usually on stage?

Well… Since there isn’t ever a scale backstage to step on prior to stage. It is really hard for me to know EXACTLY! I typically leave the house before water depletion around 127/8.

Ah piece of cake then. :)

What made you decide to come back to the competition stage?
Just for the record… I have never told anyone that I retired. All statements made are rumors and speculations! Seriously, it has never come out of my mouth that I was retired. I realize I mentioned that IF I was to place lower than 3rd at the 07 Olympia we would consider me retiring… But after that placing of 7th - I still never told anyone that I retired!

I was invited to the AC in 08 — but was unable to perform do to some issues with my endorsement at the time. Then I wasn’t qualified for the Olympia based on my ‘07 placings.

Otherwise, being on stage is also a great platform for my business stuff! I will be having some exciting news next year to share with fans. If you want to be one of the first to know my business, fans can sign up to receive my monthly newsletters via my home page of www.monicabrant.com (which is going to have a face lift beginning of the year!) Also, if anyone is interested, I have all new 2009 F.E.M. Camps listed on www.femcamp.net!!

What do you say to those who say you’re time has passed and should stop competing?
Whatever! Ha! Ha! I don’t buy it…And everyone has an opinion! I am sure the people that are saying that aren’t competitors. Keep in mind I am using the stage as a platform, I really haven’t ever expected to win! I figured it out back in 2003… I do it for the gazillion fans that are asking me, on a continual basis, to get back on stage!

What can fans expect to see from Mo in Columbus?
Just my best… As always!

Thanks Mo!
Thanks I

Chica’s Corner: Getting Motivated During the Cold

Isaac Hinds | interviews, chica's corner | Friday, 12 December 2008, 6:37 am
chicascorner.jpg
Got a question… Ask Adela.
Question: Question: It’s getting cold and it’s hard for me to get motivated. Do you have any tips for getting out of the house when it’s cold?
Adela: I understand your agony. I used to live in Illinois and when it got cold outside my training took a different direction. Luckily, I was always preparing for a contest, which inspired me to get out of bed each morning and train.
I found it helpful to switch around my training and set new goals to keep myself motivated. I would look at the aerobics schedule and try new classes and also go to a different gym to change the routine and see new faces. Sometimes a new environment will help get your motivation back during the winter season.
I would also use the holiday season as a motivational tool to stay in decent shape.  While everyone else is splurging day in and day out throughout the holidays I would limit myself to not one, not two, but three cheat meals per week if I was not getting ready for a show. This helped me enjoy the holiday food but also retain my figure. We are all going to find the cold season as an obstacle in our way to obtaining our fitness goals, but we have to find ways to keep ourselves motivated.  I’ve been known to listen to different music, attend a variety of aerobic and training classes, or just change up my whole routine, just to keep things interesting. I think that is why people lay off the gym in the first place, a lack of variety.  Try to put some variety into your workouts and your training schedule and you might just find that motivation you were looking for.
When it is cold outside and you just don’t want to get out of the house, put your workout clothes on and you will have no excuse not to go. Say no to the cozy bed, and no to the holiday food. It really can be easy, just lock yourself in a closet full of weights!!! I hope this helps, but if it doesn’t, just put a picture of me on your refrigerator and you will be motivated for life. LOL.. just kidding. :)
Have a wonderful weekend and don’t miss a workout.
Going to run bleachers!!! Yea Right!!! Maybe in about 3 months!

Chica is out!

The Scoop on Jen Hendershott’s Whey Sensible Protein

Isaac Hinds | Industry News, interviews | Tuesday, 09 December 2008, 7:39 am

I caught up with the reigning fitness champ, Jen Hendershott to get the scoop on her new brand of protein, Whey Sensible. Here’s what Ms. Fitness Olympia had to say…

Where will the products be sold?
Right now the company is starting small you can purchase off of www.jennyh.com and will be able to get these products at Phat Camp in 2009. We are working with Bodybuilding.com as we speak as they also carry my training DVDs. I think the company is doing the right thing by going one step at a time and I am here to help them get the products our there. Using my Olympia title to do some BIG PIMPIN!

Is the protein targeted specifically to women?
It is but my husband does drink it. It’s very good!  The Chocolate is yummy and makes into great shakes. The Vanilla is great to cook with. We can give you all kinds of recipes to go with this protein.

Why did you decide to consult with the company on the project and become their spokesperson?
My husband Brian is the CFO for Scivation and Primaforce/Unlimited Nutrition. These guys wanted to try to market more toward women and with me living and being near their businesses it allowed me to work with them and become their spokesperson. I have a huge fan base, mailing lists, and with my camps, I was an easy pick.  Its in my backyard. I could not pass up this great opportunity.

What makes their product different from any other ones on the market?
I would not say its so different, It’s designed for women mostly! Women love chocolate and this is chocolatey!!!  I have worked with iSatori and promoted their Eat Smart which I love, and their Curvelle for the past 2 years. I promote them and believe in them as well still to this day, they are a great company. But I love to develop and produce so this connection in my hometown where I currently live has given me a more hands on approach for getting out what women really want and need in supplements.

Who will be handling their marketing and promotions?
IFBB Pro Betsy McNally has taken a full time position in managing this line for the company PGN Nutrition. She works with the guys and is also a huge part of my team. Betsy is very qualified with nutrition, supplements, and constantly re-educating herself so she can better the lives of others.  This allows us all to work VERY WELL together.

** Betsy has a blog where she is documenting her road to her pro debut.Check it out here and follow her journey.
Aight my questions are complete for now. :)
Stay tuned for more products , we have some awesome things coming out.  We have a great fat burner called “TRIM FAT” that will launch very soon.

My My Mandy… Interview with NPC Figure Competitor Mandy Henderson

Isaac Hinds | Hardbody Exclusive, interviews | Thursday, 04 December 2008, 8:44 am
mandy1.jpg
Mandy Henderson had a look that improved throughout the year.

I caught up with one of the shorties in the NPC ranks, Mandy Henderson. She finished the year looking her best with a second place finish. Mandy is proof that persistence pays off. She started the 2008 competitive year placing in the dreaded tied for 16th spot and ended it one spot shy of turning pro. Keep your eye on her in 2009 as one to watch.

Years competing:
I’ve been competing for 3 years.

Number of NPC shows competed in:
I’ve competed in 5 Amateur Shows and 7 National Level Shows.

Next Show:
The next show I plan on competing in is either Jr Nationals or the USA’s.

When not dieting for a show what do you enjoy spending yourtime doing?
When I’m not dieting for a show, I love traveling to Mexico and Jamaica…and eating chocolate!

Favorite Supplement:
I use Apex Protein Powder and Fit Bars. I love Chef Jay’s Gourmet Brownies. They are a life saver when I’m deep in contest dieting.

Favorite body part to workout:
I love working my back. I’ve worked really hard to be able to show off doing pull-ups.

Favorite show you’ve competed in this year - why?
The NPC Nationals was my favorite show this year. I took 2nd place and came SO close to getting my Pro card. I also had a blast with some very sweet friends (old and new). It was a great show to end the season!

What do you think about the one piece going away?
I’m happy the one piece is going away because I always do better in the two piece.

Who is your biggest supporter when prepping for  show?
The two men in my life are my biggest supporters when I’m prepping for a show. My husband makes my shakes and always encourages me when I need it. My son is my cardio partner and blows his whistle when I start slowing down. But most of all, they both put up with me when I’m REALLY cranky!!!

Enjoy the off-season and we’ll look for you in Chicago and/or Vegas in 2009. For contest photos of Mandy visit IRONMANmagazine.com.
