Backstage with Nicole Nagrani

This video was shot the night before Nicole Nagrani won the overall bikini title at the NPC Team Universe. Find out what she had to say about competing with her mom and who she has a little down low crush on.

Airport Interview with new IFBB Pros Nicole Nigrani, Kristen Nigrani & Joanne Murphy

While waiting to board my flight out of Newark, I caught up with three new IFBB Pros. The NPC Team Universe overall bikini Champ Nicole Nigrani, her mom Kristen Nigrani and Joanne Murphy. Joanne and Kristen both turned pro in the Figure Division. Nicole shares when her first pro show will be and who she is gunning for. She’s the youngest IFBB Bikini pro at age 18 but don’t let that fool ya, she already has one year under her belt in an accelerated medical college. The cool thing that has never happened before was she turned pro on the same stage and night as her mom. Check it out.

Correct NPC Team Universe Master’s Figure Results

Many of the web sites posting results of the 2010 NPC Team Universe have the results of the Master’s Figure incorrect. The original 1st & 2nd place finishers, Michelle Battista & Kristen Nagrani pulled out of the Master’s Figure class because they had both qualified for the IFBB Professional League in the Figure Open F Class. This moved everyone up two places in the Master’s Figure F Class.

Team U & New York Pro Figure Updates

Competitors headed to New Jersey this year instead of New York for the Team Universe & New York Pro. The Team Universe event will be held in New Jersey next year as well but rest assured you’ll have a better host hotel. Promoter Steve Weinberger confirmed this when I stopped by the check-in.

I spotted two top contenders in the bikini division Ali Rosen and Vanessa Campbell checking in. Look for them in the C & E classes tomorrow at the NPC Bikini Prejudging.

Cheryl Brown and Gen Strobo were on their way to a photo shoot when I noticed Brownie trying to take out Strobo. Both of them are in great shape and if I was a gambling man I’d wager on them being in the top call-out tonight. Which will win the battle on stage?

Missy Coles’ Bikini Posing Tips

There are many people conducting posing seminars, workshops and camps related to the new NPC bikini division. While some are certainly qualified others have yet to show that they are qualified to speak on the matter. So, why not take a few tips from someone who has a proven track record for success? Check out this quick bikini posing video from the 2009 overall Team Universe winner, Missy Coles. Missy demonstrates how she approaches the stage and provides some helpful tips for bikini posing. Missy trains under the watchful eye of Team Bombshell.

Overall Team Universe Winner Michele Pome Disaqualified

I received official word from the NPC that the original women’s bodybuilding heavyweight class winner and overall winner, Michele Pome has been disqualified from this year’s Team Universe.  As a result of this disqualification all competitors move up one placing in the heavyweight class. Unfortunately, there is NO overall winner declared at this contest. This also results in no female bodybuilder being eligible for IFBB Pro status from this contest.

Revised Heavyweight Class results from the 2009 NPC Team Universe.
1. Theresa Hendricks
2. Alisa Allen
3. Yasha
4. Olivia Garner Terry
5. Lee Ann Scelof
6. Jessica Work
7. Audrey Turner
8. Michelle Morrison
9. Kim Amato
10. Cicely Brown
11. Shawna Mendelson
12. Tracey Hess

Team Universe Coverage

Those who took home pro cards at the Team Universe may not have received the usual buzz they deserve with the Olympia being held just one week later. You can check out hundreds of photos on and off the stage here, as well as the full contest results. I had a chance to do about 20 video interviews with some of the newest IFBB female pros and those will be up shortly. I’ll be writing more about the stories that came out of New York and trust me there are some great ones.

Congratulations Hardbody Pros

A big shout out to all the hardbody women who turned pro over the weekend. Ann Titone has come oh so close to her pro card a number of times and this weekend she snagged it. Ann Pratt knows how that feeling goes. She’s competed over a dozen times and come up just short. That wasn’t the case this weekend and she benefitted from the new rule in the Overall. Angela Mraz won the overall in the Master’s Figure however she had already achieved IFBB Pro status in the open. That left the second highest vote getter with a pro card and that was Ann. It was great to see the Prattster win her card as she was literally jumping up and down with joy.

It’s interesting to see the reactions from those who win. Some women act like it’s no big deal where others are crying and shaking with excitement. I’m headed to the NPC NEWS photo shoot now where I’ll get some photos and interviews with the winners. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look thanks to J.M. Manion as he shoots the winners.

It’s been a busy, busy weekend and the reports tend to be fewer when photographing and attending the show. Not to worry, there are a number of amazing stories from this show that I’ll share soon. Stories like… fitness competitor Ariel Khadr. She turns pro just 10 days after her 17th birthday and has her pro card before her driver’s license. Check back for more info and as always follow the action today on our twitter account @hardbodynews.

Monica Makes Her Mark

Congratulations to Monica Mark on winning the Overall Figure crown tonight. Monica tells me she will waste no time jumping into the pros. She plans to make her pro debut next month at the Border States.

Dianna Dahlgren… New IFBB Bikini Pro?

You’ve seen Dianna on here before and if you’re headed to the Olympia you can meet her at the FLEX booth. Dianna is a new, fresh face on the NPC scene. She’s a full-time model and does it well. It looks like this competitive little hardbody may be adding a new title to her resume tonight. Dianna rocked the hardbody on stage during the NPC Team Universe contest and was one of the few women with abs. Will she leave New York an IFBB Pro? If I were to wager on it, I’d be tempted to go all-in. We’ll find out in a few hours when the awards are announced.

I had a chance to shoot with Dianna yesterday and she proved once again that she is one to watch. Mark my words, you will be seeing more of this woman in the months to come.

Keep your eye on this hardbody, like it’s much of a chore to do.

Amanda PRO…cida?

We told you there was another one to watch in Florida a couple months ago. Shannon Dey alerted us about Amanda Procida and she was spot on. Shannon is proving to have a keen eye with the bikini division. It’s looking like Amanda, competing in her first national NPC show, will head back to Tampa an IFBB Bikini Pro. It will be well deserved if it does happen. I had a chance to shoot with Amanda yesterday and she’s a perfect example of what the bikini division is and should be all about. Fit, tone, good skin tone, good looks and a hardbody booty to boot. This is one shot from a ton of great ones we captured yesterday afternoon. Stay tuned for more and follow our twitter account to see if she does turn pro. If you’re interested in meeting Amanda stop by the Gaspari Nutrition booth at the Olympia next week.

Live From New York

Sorry for the lack of updates Hardbody regulars. We’ve been a little tied up with photo shoots, shooting the show, sorting pics and trying to find a little nap in between there. So far no nap. A quick report. The NPC Fitness routines last night were overall very good. Some great new talent and who ever leaves here with pro cards will be welcome additions to the pro fitness ranks. Some high flying, high energy routines. We’ll see how they look in the physique rounds.

IMG_4010

A number of awesome strength moves were on display in NYC.

The New York Pro Figure was a good show. I have Nicole Wilkins-Lee leaving the winner with some momentum heading into the Olympia next week. Alicia Harris continues to find her groove. You can’t help but love this woman when she takes the stage and smiles. One year ago she was here looking to leave with a pro card. Fast-forward one year and she is heading to the Olympia and the current Muscle & Fitness Hers cover girl. I have her in the top three with Larissa Reis and her battling for second. It’s tough to call how the final placings with go because the two-piece had call-outs different from the one piece. I like that head judge Sandi Williamson did this. All too often they are the exact same call-outs in the one and two piece rounds. The women’s physiques look VERY different in the two piece than the one piece. An example of this is Sheryln Roy. Beautiful woman, great physique but when she is in the two piece she looks much smaller than the other girls. She went from a solid 4/5 to who knows where when the names are read. Props to Jesse Palmer-Booth for making waves in the top 10. She usually competes in fitness but her physique held its own here. I have her in the 7-8 range when the final dust clears. We’ll find out tonight how things play out.

It’s off to the NPC prejudging now. Things begin with the women’s bodybuilding at 9AM EST. I believe the show ends with the Bikini Division. It’s funny to hear the buzz around the bikini. Amusing to me because it is really catching on and from people who were very anti-bikini in the beginning. Which new bikin pros will emerge from the shadows today?

Fitness Factory Thirty Strong in NYC

There are 30, yes you read it right THIRTY competitors in the Big Apple representing the Fitness Factory. Mike Davies is one of the leading trainers and with good reason. He has a proven track record and one look at the women he’s worked with you will see what I mean.

A few women to keep an eye on this weekend from the factory… Pam Soper, Ann Titone, Mandy Henderson and Stephanie Mc Donald. These ladies will be in the figure portion of the show and have come close to turning pro a number of times. Babette Mulford will be taking the stage in fitness and Teresa Hendericks in womens bodybuilding. Certainly there are others that could be in the mix.

Props to Mike and Julie!

The Early Bird Gets the Pro Card?

Monica will be competing at the Team Universe event this weekend in New York. I caught up with Monica on the eve of her show. Get to know a bit more about this NPC figure competitor and what she says about early morning cardio.

Monica from an IRONMAN magazine shoot.

Are you still personal training people and if so what type of clients do you have?
I am currently still personal training clients as well as running the facility where we also do  physical therapy, massage therapy and have a body spa. The type of clients I have range from so many different walks of life, from business professionals, stay at home moms, athletes and to the older geriatric client. That variety makes my job so interesting and enjoyable. It is always fun to help a client reach their potential of one day stepping on stage, but there is something very gratifying knowing you helped an older client accomplish everyday tasks, like for example walking up and down the stairs or getting up and down from a chair.

How did you get your start in competing?
To one day step on stage had been one of my dreams since I was eighteen years old and I first opened an “Oxygen” magazine. Monica Brant immediately became my idol and I dreamed of obtaining a physique just like hers. Not to sound corny, but my room was covered wall to wall with pictures of her to motivate me. It was then that I started weight training consistently and it became my new lifestyle. I didn’t decide to compete until 2006 when I knew I was physically and mentally ready to make the commitment. My first show was the 2006 NPC Arizona State Championship.

You came in what looked to be over-dieted last year. What went wrong last year and what did you change this year?
The phrase “smaller and tighter” kept repeating in my head. I over shot my conditioning and before I knew it I had become too lean. I lost all over my feminine curves and lines and it showed in my 10th placing. This year we have kept a close eye on my conditioning and weight. If I start to lean out too much I start to consume more fats daily and decrease my cardio. A great example would be the USAs this year in July I was eating a lot of calories all the way up to the show, (quite different than any other show I had done where fish and aspragus seem to be the special at every meal).

Do you feel it’s important to have a trainer/nutritionist for competitions?
I feel it is crucial to have a trainer/ nutrtionist for a competition even if you aren’t a rookie. Our body’s can change from show to show and what you physique you need to bring to each show also changes so a standard diet to follow each show usually wont give you the best outcome. When we look at our own bodys it is hard to have a clear image of what we really look like and to have that outside opinion is critical. With out my tranier Kim Oddo I might have brought the over condiotioned look to the USAs this year. A trainer/ nutritionist can also offer great mental support and motivation at those hard days.

How much cardio do you typically do a day?
The amount of cardio depends on how my body is responding, but usually ranges from 45 minutes to an hour and has gone up to two hours before.

monica2

Do you have best results doing it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach or another time?
I do have great results from early morning cardio. I have made it part of my life for the last two years I have been competing. I feel so much better going through my day knowing that task has already been accomplished. I am now a very “early bird”. I probably get more done in the morning than most people get done all day. My first year of competing I tried to get in my cardio done at all different times of the day it then became a chore and created a bit of misery doing it.

Any favorite supplements you enjoy the most?
Supplements that I can’t leave with out would be my whey and casein protein. I enjoy Isoflex Chocolate Whey Protein by Allmax and Chocolate Casein Protein by Optimum Nutrition. I also enjoy Evogen before I lift weights and Cortisol Complex by Body by O. I use Nitro Burn PM before bed because it helps me relax and get a good nights sleep.

How important is it to have a significant other who understands and supports your competition side of life?
I think it is very important and  I couldn’t imagine life any other way for me. This sport is a lifestyle and differently needs a great support system. I am very lucky to have a husband that only understands, but is my biggest fan and competes himself.. So together we can go through the highs and lows of prepping for a show. We pick each other up when one of us has a hard day and we praise each others accomplishments. I always tease him and always remind him how lucky he is to have a pre-contest gourmet chef  in the kitchen.

You used to play tennis right? What did you think of the Serena Williams outburst?
I did play tennis and I still do enjoy playing a match here and there when I can. I think Serena Williams outburst was out of line. As an athlete things aren’t always going to go our way. We aren’t going to always win and in her case overreacting with profanity to the judge not only cost her the match it cost her loss of respect. As a tennis icon and having a lot of fans and admirers, some of which are children she did not exhibit sportsmanship and carried an attitude of self-righteousness. She needs to work on controlling that fire inside that drives her to be a great athlete.

You were so close to turning pro at NPC USAs. Is it easier to get motivated placing second or placing 10th at a show?

I feel they are both motivating. To be right there and almost taste the win makes you want it even more and to place 10th motivated me to work harder to get to the top.

What will be the deciding factor that puts you in the winner’s circle over your competition this weekend?
I think paying attention to every single detail will put me in the winner’s circle. Making sure my presentation is on point on stage and must importantly  go out there and have fun.

Anyone you want to thank and how can people get in touch with you for personal training?
I would like to thank my parents and my husband for giving me the strongest support system and understanding my dreams. I would also like to thank Kim Oddo always for believing in me and giving me all the necessary tools to succeed.

My website is monfit.com and I am on myspace and facebook.

Thanks Monica and good luck this weekend.

Monica Ready to Make Her Mark

Monica Mark missed getting a pro card at the NPC USAs earlier this year by a small margin. She brought an improved physique and was rewarded for it. While she moved up in placings, this California girl is dream’n of a different outcome in New York City. Monica will take the stage at the Team Universe in hopes of snagging a top two spot in her class and leaving an IFBB Pro. If she brings a similar look this weekend, bank on her turning pro.

Stay tuned for our interview with Monica…

Amanda Procida Turning Heads in NYC

Keep your eye on Amanda Procida this weekend at the Team Universe contest. Last month, Amanda won the B Class in Bikini at the NPC USA Coastal. She’s looking to continue the winning ways this weekend in the Big Apple.

Mealey on the Money

NPC Figure competitor, Laura Mealey kicked the year off with a with a win at the JR USAs. She took the Figure E class at that contest but missed out on a pro card. A few months later, at the NPC Jr. Nationals, Laura slipped to 8th in her class. They say the third time is a charm and that’s what she is hoping for at this weekend’s Team Universe. Here’s a look at Laura a few days out from the contest.

Hardbody Hottie – Kim Sheppard

Kim Sheppard is one hardbody momma. When this mother of two isn’t in an airplane she’s hitting the gym. She’s found her groove in the world of NPC figure and has one helluva physique. Kim plans on competing again next month and don’t be surprised if she leaves NYC an IFBB pro.

Arnold Amateur Bikini Winner Ali Sonoma

We first told you about Ali Sonoma in February, before she headed into the Arnold Amateur Bikini contest. She left with the inaugural bikini title but we have yet to see her compete for the elusive IFBB Pro card. So when will we see Ali on the NPC stage battling it out for a Bikini Pro card? I caught up with Ali at the Warrior International booth during the UFC FAN EXPO. Ali was representing the MMA clothing line and it was there she shared that Team Universe is where she plans to compete next.
