George Likes His Chicken Spicy and NPC Bodybuilding & Bikini?

If you attended the NPC Los Angeles Championships and are SEINFELD fans, you were in for a treat. Jason Alexander, famously known for his role as George Costanza on the hit show, was in attendance. I’m told he was there in support of a trainer friend of his. I’m a little bummed I wasn’t there as he seems like a pretty cool guy and I’m sure he’s annoyed to death with the George references. I still would have asked him if he likes his chicken spicy though.

Ron Avidan snapped the lead shot at the show and I’m not sure if the actor was approving or not. Regardless, you never know who might show up at a NPC bodybuilding, fitness, bikini and figure event.

This weekend is one of the busiest of the year in the competitive world. There are NPC shows taking place all across the country. IFBB Fitness Pro Tracey Greenwood has her Tracey Greenwood Classic in Philly. Lonnie Teper’s NPC West Coast Classic has a record number of entrants. Adela Garcia is holding her first NPC event with a strong showing. There’s a big show in The Big Easy where NPC Texas District Chairman Lee Thompson will be head judging. Venture west a bit from Louisiana and you’ll find the Flex Lewis Classic, where top bodybuilder Flex Lewis hold his own show. Tim Gardner has a great NPC show attached to the Pro Bodybuilding Weekly IFBB Tampa Pro show in Tampa.

WHEW! I’m sure I missed some of the shows but check out NPCNEWSonline.com for a complete list of NPC shows taking place in your area.

The Swami’s NPC West Coast Classic

Lonnie “The Swami” Teper has another stellar NPC event on tap this weekend in El Monte, California. LT is a passionate guy who puts his all into everything he does and this show is no different. This weekend the NPC West Coast Classic has a record number of competitors signed up to compete and The Big Beef, Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler will be the featured guest poser.

The Swami reports on his IRON MAN blog, “as of 9:30 am, there were 156 (90 men, 66 women) competitors registered for the 2011 NPC BMR West Coast Classic.” The athlete’s meeting starts at 8am with the prejudging beginning at 11am.

LT also shared that the 2004 FHM “Model of the Year”, Vida Guerra will make her NPC debut in the bikini division. Vida is a stunner and should rock the bikini stage with ease. This is a great contest and one of the few where competitors are gauranteed to appear in a magazine. IRON MAN will feature all of the overall winners in an upcoming issue. Good luck to every one competing.

You can purchase tickets to see Vida and all the hardbodies compete by visiting www.npcwestcoast.com. Tell Lonnie Hardbody sent ya and he might buy you lunch. :)

Meet NPC Bikini Competitor – Yarelis “The Cuban Cutie” Gonzalez

NPC Bikini competitor Yarelis Gonzalez has competed in two shows and won not only her class but the coverall in both. She’ll be competing this weekend at the NPC Steve Stone Metropolitan Bikini Championships held in conjunction with the New York Pro Fitness. I caught up with the Cuban Cutie to find out more about her. She shares whether or not she’s dated a dude with a mullet, her thoughts on fanny packs and more.

Name: Yarelis Gonzalez but you can call me Ellis :)

Ellis.. is that was all the cool people call you? YES, only cool peeps!

Age: 23

Born in: Havana Cuba

Currently Reside in: Wilmington DE

Languages Fluent in: Spanish and a little Italian

Pets: Black Lab

What’s your his name? His name is Heppo. My baby sister made it up :)

Contest History:
2010 DE States bikini overall champion
2010 Hurricane Bay Tampa FL bikini overall champion

How did you get started in competing? I wanted to take it to the next level, no more go to the gym once a week lift a 7lb dumbell look around and go home, so I decided to do a show. A well put together and followed competition prep will take you there.

Are you saying no more pink dumbbells for you? :) Heavy pink dumbbells for me.

How did you start working with Tracey Greenwood as your trainer? I met this girl who was training for a show and let’s just say she looked very healthy, (killer body, tight everything) I asked her how did you get all this? That’s how I got to Trixie.

What’s been the best part of working with a trainer? Tracey is just fantastic, she knows my body better than I do and has been dead on about every single detail. Her level of expertise is up there. I’ve never felt or looked better before.

What does your family think about your eating and competing? They love it, my mother gives me a lot of credit for the dieting portion of it. I grew up on rice and beans on the table every day, so adjusting has been a challenge.

Ever had a freak out before a show? Oh no.. never, way too cool! haha Yes Trixie can tell you.

HA! You’re right on track then.

What’s your workout routine split look like?
I welcome Mondays with a killer, butt kicking, fast-passed leg work out
Tuesdays is back/biceps
Thursdays chest, shoulders triceps.

How much cardio do you do every day? About 1 hour. I try to split it in two sessions most of the time.

What do you do for your cardio? I really like the stair stepper, I try not to run too much, it puts a lot of pressure on my knees. I keep my body guessing what I’m going to do next, it’s the best way to burn fat or at least it is what works the best for me.

Do you work out on an empty stomach? Just my cardio.

Favorite meal of the day? Breakfast…egg whites oats and blueberries. yuummm!!

What will you be eating for your “first supper”? The food I’ve been craving… chocolate pound cake! :D

Where do you get your suits? Suits You Swimwear

What is the most fun about competing? Back stage, when I’m all dolled up. I glance at the mirror and see what I’ve been able to achieve!! It makes me happy.

Favorite Supplements? I like my Glutamine it is very hard for me to put on muscle specially with the dieting so it has definitely helped.

What advice would you give other women who are thinking about competing? If it is something you think about and wish you could do, do it! why not nothing bad can come out of it, only good things.

How many pairs of workout shoes do you own? Wait…….yes 4.

Ever worn a fanny pack? haha no, they are awful!

Ever dated a dude with a mullet? It’s in my bucket list.

Play any sports growing up? I cheered for 2 years in Cuba, and ran… because there are no cars lol jk

Are you more of a girlie girl or a tomboy? I’m such a girl, but there are days when I just don’t care.

Are you sweats or tight booty shorts kinda gym girl? sweats

Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks? Yarelis would like to run on Dunkins please!

Good call on Dunkin Donuts coffee. What do you order? Caramel hot chocolate or Iced Latte.

I saw that a pigeon left you a little present on your car window. Do you laugh or get pissed? Honestly it was already a crappy day, so i just laughed :)

Ever had to hide a jar of peanut butter from yourself? Yes, I need to find someone to do it for me though. lol

Favorite Cartoon character? Sponge bob

Favorite song to listen to in the gym? “Fighter” Christina Aguilera

What’s the key to a good Fist Pump? Good music and sweat.

Anyone you want to thank? My coach, trainer and friend Tracey Greenwood, my family for always being there for me and HardBody.com!

Thanks for your time and all the best this weekend!

Over 300 Hardbodies to Compete in The NPC Ronnie Coleman Classic

This weekend over 300 competitors will take the stage in the NPC Ronnie Coleman Classic. The event will feature some of the brightest and best physiques in all of Texas. Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure, Bikini and the new Men’s Physique division give hardbodies a chance to compete in one of the best NPC Texas events.

The even takes place this Saturday, April 2nd. For more information visit www.MetroFlexGym.com or www.thompsonmusclecontest.com. If you’re competing in the event, attending or know someone who is give a shout out in the comments below.

NPC Men’s Physique – Tips, Thoughts, Photos and More

One of the first big shows of 2011 featured the new division of the NPC, Men’s Physique. Promoter Jon Lindsay wisely chose to add the new division to his popular event, the Muscle Contest. The contest drew 47 physique competitors to the stage, which ended up out numbering the men’s bodybuilding entrants. Now before you die hard bodybuilding fans freak out, don’t worry bodybuilding is not being phased out. Bodybuilding is the backbone of the industry and will continue to survive. Female bodybuilding is going through it’s own changes and we’ll see how things play out with that side of things at the NPC JR USA in May, where the first women’s physique pro cards will be awarded.

One thing to clarify, despite the names being similar the divisions are distinctly different. The Men’s Physique division does not have a routine or mandatory poses, aside from the front and back poses. It’s much like bikini in terms of what it consists of on stage. Yes, some peeps amuse themselves by calling it men’s bikini. Hardy-har-har. Those making fun of the division clearly don’t see the big picture. This division opens up opportunities to men who either don’t have the genetics to become a pro bodybuilder or aspirations to look like one. Either way, this division is and will continue to thrive. Don’t be surprised if you see close to 200 men’s physique competitors at NPC Nationals or NPC USAs.

Will things evolve in the division? Absolutely. Right now the judges and competitors are finding their groove and “the look”. Just like in the bikini division, some things will work and others may not but have patience it will all work out.

I’ve spoken with a number of NPC judges and the one common response is, “we’re not looking for a bodybuilder look”. I share their sentiments having photographed the NPC UTAH which had the division as well. So, what does that mean? It means a Men’s Physique competitor obviously needs to be in shape but they shouldn’t be dry, grainy and shredded. The grainy, hard, striated look will NOT be rewarded in this new division. If competitors show up looking dry and shredded they will (or at least should be )marked down. Props to the judges for marking competitors down for that look already.  The judges are out to make a clear distinction between bodybuilding and Men’s Physique. Remember, they still can only judge what is presented to them on stage.

Tips & Observations:
These are just MY opinions but they seem to be shared by judges and others who have seen a show in person.

• DON’T have too much oil on.
It will wash you out and make you look like a basted Thanksgiving turkey.

• DO have some oil on.
No oil makes you look flat and your physique won’t “pop” on stage.

• DO have six pack abs.
If you don’t have abs, you won’t stand a chance of placing very high.

• Present with confidence.
If you’re looking down or unsure of yourself it shows. Walk with some swagga and show off your hard work. The crowd will react, as will the judges, to someone who carries themselves with confidence. That doesn’t mean cheese it up. Find the balance with out looking like a toolbag.

• Smile
I forgot this one initially but this is one of the most important ones on stage. Smiling conveys positive energy and people are drawn to it. If you’re frowning or scowling it won’t help you. Think about it, you’re draw to people who are smilingly and having fun more than bitter bodies. The stage is no different.

• Practice your posing/presentation.
Yes, I know as cheesy as it sounds competitors should practice. Yes, it’s only a front and back pose but if you don’t know how to present your physique it will be obvious on stage. It’s kind of like a photo shoot. You want to show your lines to flatter you physique, not detract from it.

• Shorts selection.
Some people feel the “board shorts” aren’t the way to go but like it or not, it’s one of the rules. They obviously allow the competitors to feature their upper body and not have to showcase their leg development but that’s beside the point. Choose flattering shorts and colors that work for YOUR physique. What worked for a guy who won another show, may or may not work for you. Colors are ranging the gamut and it goes back to what works for you.  Brighter colors will stand out more but they may also detract from your physique. Patterns can either accent your look or detract from it. Make sure you’re comfortable in the shorts and they fit. If they are too big and baggy, it doesn’t look good. They also shouldn’t be too tight. They shouldn’t go below your knee. They should be at the knee or two inches above it.

• Tanning
You should have a tan on stage. If you go too light you’ll look pale and washed out under the bright lights. You don’t want to go super dark or as dark as most bodybuilders.  Know what works for you. I say go a shade darker than a photo shoot but if you’re a pale dude that might mean you need 2-3 more shades. Every body is going to be different but you do need a tan.

Diet
Do what works for you to be in your best shape. Some people will need to diet for weeks to get ready. I did. I got fat and out of shape and needed to diet 14 weeks to get into the shape I’m in now. It’s only because I made excuses, didn’t work out or eat as healthy as I should so I followed a bodybuilder type diet. I know some competitors who cleaned up their diet for a couple weeks and were ready. That’s the smarter way about it and one which should happen more often than not. Every competitor is different so don’t get caught up in what others are doing, focus on what you need to do.

• Day of the show
Some people have asked if you should deplete, carb up, pump up, etc. Again, it all depends on your physique. You may need to treat the contest like a bodybuilder would with depletion and carbing up in order to look your best. Some people may not need to. If you know your body, you’ll know what is needed to look your best. If that means eating rice cakes and peanut butter then do it, if it means woofing down a pizza then go for it.

• The Ladies
The overwhelming majority of women who have seen the competitors in the Men’s Physique division are drawn to it. So dudes, if you need a reason to compete let impressing the ladies be your motivation. I’ve had more than a dozen women tell me they’d love to judge it. Which isn’t a bad idea. It would get more women into the industry and on the judges panel. What do you think… Ladies would you judge it? I’m sure the guys wouldn’t mind.

View Results

When it comes to the higher level of competition, like the NPC JR USA in May, the little details will decide who is awarded a pro card or not. If you have a kick ass physique but can’t present it, you won’t win. Let’s be honest, you need to be a good looking cat to be in contention. If you think your zoo-lander look or your “myspace face” makes you attractive, think again. Also your genetics will play a role in splitting hairs at the higher level. If you have jacked up abs or under/over developed shoulders it could make a difference. We won’t know the exact look for the future pro division until pro cards are awarded but look for the division to grow and get more and more defined in the months ahead.
