2011 IFBB Europa Super Show Dallas Bikini Results & Recap

The 2011 Europa Super Show Dallas was one of the most talked about events of the weekend. Natalie Pennington notched her first pro win in the IFBB and Jessica Jessie finished in the runner-up position. Reigning Bikini Olympia champ, Sonia Gonzales was relegated to third. Since the top three women were already qualified for the Olympia, the fourth place finisher Dianna Dahlgren secured her spot in the big dance.

I try not to be overly critical of the judging at shows because it’s subjective and it’s not an easy job to do despite what some might think. The judges had their work cut out for them at this competition because most of the women showed up in rare form and not in a good way. In a trend that I hope we see end here, the women were way too conditioned and overly lean. It’s not a good look for bikini and one that should be avoided. Natalie Pennington was the ideal on this day for the judges but that’s not say it’s the ideal on every day. The judges can only judge what is presented on the day of the show. Jessica Jessie brought back her side walk for some reason and while she has a nice look in photos, I didn’t have her in my top five because of her conditioning or lack there of in the lower body. Sonia Gonzales may have made a misstep by doing this show and finishing in third. She took some of the wind out of her sails heading into the Olympia and will have her work cut out for her to defend her title. Two weeks prior to the show I think she looked her best but you’re judged on that day. I thought her upper body, specifically her shoulders and arms looked a little too muscular for bikini and she may have gotten a bit of a pass from the judges this time around. I don’t think she’ll be as fortunate if she presents the same look at the Olympia. Dianna Dahlgren was the winning on everyone’s score card from the pit and most in the audience. She wasn’t 100% at prejudging as her posing needed a little polishing and her upper body needed to fill out a bit. When she took the stage for the evening show she was on the money though. She was more relaxed and her upper body filled out. This typically happens when a competitor eats some sugar or has a bit more water. Look for her to be the one to beat at the Arizona Pro.

I’m not sure why the women felt the need to come in so lean but I hope the women of the IFBB bring back the softer, curvier look for the Olympia and the judges reward that and send a message by placing the overly lean physiques lower.

2011 IFBB Europa Super Show Dallas Figure Results

History was made in Dallas, Texas over the weekend at the IFBB Europa Super show. Ava Cowan won her first professional figure competition and deservedly so. Deena Walsh brought her best physique to date and it earned her a second place finish and a trip to the Olympia. Ella Horton blew bast women 1/2 her age and showed that age is only a number. Ella will be take the Olympia stage at 50 years of age! One look at her physique and you’d never guess she was rock’n a 50 year old hardbody. That’s impressive. Congratulations ladies!

IFBB Europa Super Show Bikini Prejudging Recap

Heading into the 2011 IFBB Europa Super Show I thought it would be the most competitive bikini show we’d see all year. I was wrong. It looked like a stacked line up and with each woman at their best, it would have been. The overwhelming majority of the ladies took the stage looking anything but the best, not all but most.

Let me preface this by saying I have nothing personal against any of the women. They are all in a league of their own in the grand scheme of the world however this is a competition where it’s the best of the best. These are my opinions and not those of anyone but my own. Agree or disagree it’s just how I saw things. Agree? Cool. Disagree? That’s cool too. Chime in with your two cents in the comments below.

I was disappointed in this show as a whole. Overall there were a few women who did well and many others were way off their best. Sadly, the theme I saw with most women was way too conditioned and some looked like they need to go eat a pizza and lay off whatever they did in the final hours of prep. Bikini should not be about extreme conditioning but it also shouldn’t be about fluff. This turned out to be a show of what NOT to do with your conditioning for many of these women. That said there were some highlights to the competition.

Top Contenders
The first call-out was Jessica Anderson, Jessica Jessie, Natalie Pennington, Sonia Gonzales and Dianna Dahlgren. I didn’t have this as my top five but the judges saw it otherwise. It looks like Natalie Pennington could leave Dallas the winner. I wouldn’t have her in my top five. She looks good from the front however when you turn her around she has no booty. I think a competitor should have a butt if they are winning a pro bikini show. Jessica Jessie looks to be in second and I wouldn’t have her in my top five. Jessica looked like she crash dieted or over did the cardio to get into shape. She had noticeable fluff around her knees and her backside. I don’t think a competitor should be rewarded when showing up in that kind of condition. Sonia Gonzales was improved from the Bikini International with her conditioning and had a better booty. After prejudging it looks like she will be in third which I disagree with if that’s how it shakes out. I saw Sonia two weeks ago and she looked like she was ready then. When she tightened up her conditioning she lost the soft, curviness she had. On stage her arms looked a bit too muscular for bikini. If the Sonia of two weeks ago was on stage she’d be the talk of the show. I think she’ll end up in third here. The one everyone is talking about at this show is Dianna Dahlgren. It’s no secret DD can look a little thick in her off season, her words not mine. She was absolutely gorgeous on stage and had one of the best booties in the show. She looked a little thin and too lean in her upper body though. If she was a little fuller up top she would be unstoppable. It looks like she will end up fourth but I would have her winning the show. This was without question her best look to date. If she fills out look for her to win in Phoenix.

Jessica Anderson made her pro debut and she looked her best ever. She needed to be a little tighter in the booty department but she is stunning. This woman is without question one of the most beautiful women you will see in the IFBB. Awesome job in her debut and she will be in the 5-7 range. Cristina Vujnich only did her myspace/zoolander face once so that was an obvious improvement from her past shows. She looked her best and she could end up in fifth. I was impressed with what she brought to the stage in her debut.

Rest of the Pack
Jennifer Andrews was one of the early favorites but came in way, way too lean. It was not a good look for her and she needed to be fuller to be in winning form like she was earlier in the year. Nicole Coleman stripped off a ton of muscle and was the smallest she’s ever been. That said she almost looked too dieted down, which I never thought I’d say. She needed to be a bit fuller to have the contender look but she’s done what I never thought she’d do and that’s have a bikini body. Good progress. Amanda Duncan was one people had on their radar as a top contender. She’ll be in the top ten but needed to be tighter to be higher. Janet Harding looked her best to date and should finish higher than I expected before the show. Good job on her part. Dayna Maleton looked a little too big for her body. She has one of the best booties in the biz and she finally nailed her posing. Now if she can bring the body she had at New York and combine it with the posing she had here she’d be in the mix. Tons of potential if she taps into it and takes a prep a little more serious.

Christie Marquez not bad but needs to stand out a bit more and have some wow factor to her when she takes the stage. Taylor Matheny is cute and I like her look. She poses too much like a figure competitor and I’d like to see her change that up. Brooke Mora looked her best as a pro and yes even better than when she qualified for the Olympia. She could be a bit tighter but overall she showed good progress and I liked the look she brought this time around compared to her previous showings. Talia Terese did the opposite of what I thought might happen. Doing shows back to back can be a challenge for competitors to hold their conditioning. She came in over conditioned and way too hard. When she posed in the individual poses she had noticeable separation in her quads. If she looked like she did in Vegas she would be top 3 but the conditioning she brought this time around won’t land her in the top five.

Overall one of the most disappointing bikini shows of the year. I hope the women and their trainers take note on this show and don’t over do it for future shows. I also hope the judges send a message that over conditioned bikini physiques should not be rewarded but out of shape bodies shouldn’t be rewarded either. It’s a reminder that this is a subjective competition and everyone will have their own take on who they like or don’t.

The finals take place today at 3pm CST. Follow the results on @hardbodynews and see who prevails. You can see the wrap up video from this event on FLEXonline.com.

IFBB Europa Super Show – Figure Prejudging Recap

Ava Cowan was the favorite heading into the 2011 IFBB Europa Supershow Figure competition and she delivered. The prejudging took place on Friday afternoon in Dallas and when Ava’s name was called first, no one was surprised.

There were however a couple of names that did catch people off guard. Ella Horton and Deena Walsh were two women who weren’t on most people’s picks heading into the show, including mine. That said, when the women came out for their individual quarter turns I had Deena in my top call-out. I didn’t have Ella in my short list. Heather Dees rounded out the top call-out.

First call-out – Heather Dees, Ava Cowan, Deena Walsh, Ella Horton

Heather set the bar high qualifying for the Olympia in her first pro show. She looked a little off at this show compared to her previous outings. Heather looked to be holding a bit of water and not quite as crisp as we’ve seen her in the past. I’d like to see her tweak her posing a bit as it’s a little rigid and she stands up-right a bit too much. I have her in third after prejudging.

Ava was the cut and dry winner in my book. She had a new look with her hair, which I liked, and she was a tad softer than in the past. It works for her and was one of her best showings to date. I think her sharpest conditioning was at the Figure International but her overall look here was on the money. She should receive straight ones from the judges and leave Dallas with her first IFBB Pro title.

The surprise of the show was Deena Walsh. This was her best showing to date and I have her in the runner-up position. The look she presented on stage was better than what most of the photos show. She was poised, classy and stood out. Great job from someone who most didn’t pick in their top 10 before the show.

Ella Horton could be third but will likely be fourth. I thought she was a bit off from the back and in the glute area. She’s one of the older competitors on stage and obviously looks great for her age. She didn’t stand out to me in the individual posing rounds and the comparisons but the judges liked what they saw and she’s in the hunt for a qualification.

I have Jami DeBenard in 5th based on the call-outs and had the best debut out of all the rookies. I would have liked to seen her added to the top four women and had we seen that I think she may have moved up. Alea Suarez is in the hunt for a top five spot. The former bikini competitor has really brought up her legs and added some muscle. Figure is definitely a better fit for her. Her tanning was a little light and she could have been a bit sharper but she’s one who can be competitive in the division.

One woman I thought should have been a bit higher was Michelle Bates. I like her physique and think you will see her in the top 5 at some point. The only critique I have on her is a little more roundness to her front delts and change her hair style.

The finals take place at 3pm CST and we’ll see where everyone ends up then. Follow @hardbodynews on twitter for all the updates. Visit FLEXonline.com for photos from the prejudging. See the prejudging recap video I did with FLEX magazine’s online editor, Sean Andros here!

Hardbody Bikini Preview & Poll: Europa Supershow Dallas

The 2011 IFBB Europa Supershow Dallas Women’s Bikini will be the most competitive show of the year, at least to date. I think it will be more competitive than the Bikini International and could be every bit as competitive as next month’s Olympia. We’ll see 15 women who on their own turn heads left and right in any room. What happens when they all take to the same stage? We’re about to find out.

The HARDBODY Breakdown:

Jessica Anderson: One word. STUNNING! Jess is a name some of you may not remember but you will after this weekend. She is one of the most beautiful women in the IFBB and you may not recall her name because this is her pro debut. She turned pro at the 2009 NPC Nationals and hasn’t taken the stage since. That’s because she’s active duty in the United States NAVY and spent some time deployed overseas. I know she’ll look better than when she turned pro, we’ll have to see if it’s enough to hang in her debut. Regardless, you’ll see a lot more of her coming up.

Jennifer Andrews: Jennifer is up and down in her placings. She could be in the top three or out of the top five. Ordinarily I’d say she’s a favorite for a top three spot but here she’ll have her work cut out for her to crack the top five simply because the field is that good.

Nicole Coleman: She continues to bring her physique down but still packs a bit too much muscle from her power-lifting and figure days. Improvement is the name of Nicole’s game and she’s doing it. Won’t be top five here but if she came finish top 10 would be a win for her.

Dianna Dahlgren: Easily one of the hottest fitness models in the industry but can she translate that to the stage. If she can watch out. We haven’t seen Dianna on stage all year so she might be off her best or she could be at her best. If her booty is tight look for her to be in the top three. Her biggest challenge is presentation, if she can bring some swagga to the stage watch out. Regardless, watch for more Dianna in the magazines in the coming months. She’s an example of a woman who doesn’t have to win a show to get a magazine cover.

Amanda Duncan: A number of people are buzzing about the little blonde Texas tornado. She certainly knows how to work it on stage and this will be her pro debut. I think she’ll be in deep waters and may need a floatie to help her swim with these bikini sharks. She needs to bring a tight booty to hang in the top five, if it is you could see her in the mix.

Sonia Gonzales: The champ has a target on her back and she has used it to fuel herself to coming in better than ever. I think we’ll see an improved booty from Sonia and she will be at her best. She’s a beautiful woman who has improved her physique steadily. She’s not the curviest girl but if she can rock the stage with confidence she’ll be the one to beat. She has shown she’s beatable so it’s not money in the bank for her.

Janet Harding: I love Janet and she is the most persistent woman on the circuit. She’s improved and definitely gotten better but this show will need to be about living in the moment and having fun for her. This is like being in the Olympia for her and if she can finish in the top 10, consider it a win.

Jessica Jessie: Jessica is a bit of a wild card here. When she’s on the money she is in the mix, when she’s off she is way off. I think she’ll have a struggle to be top three here unless her legs are tight. She’s dropped the side walk presentation and toned down the hair flips. She could be top three or on the outside of the top five.

Dayna Maleton: Dayna has one of the best butts in the biz and she’s finally relaxing with her presentation. There’s no question she has the physique to do well it will be how she presents it. If she could finish top five here she should go celebrate with shots of tequila. It will be tough for her to get in there but it is possible.

Christie Marquez: Cute girl but will be one of the women hoping to come in at her all time best. If she can crack the top ten it will be victory for her but this will be her toughest show of her career.

Taylor Matheny: Taylor is adorable. Bubbly personality onstage and off and I hear she’s one helluva a chef. I really like her look and one of the few blondes in the biz. If she can break the top five she should be stoked. It will be her pro debut so she’ll need to put the rookie jitters aside and work it. I like what she’s cook’n up, let’s see if the judges do too.

Brooke Mora: Another gorgeous woman who will likely have more success off stage with her modeling then she will winning shows. She competed in last year’s inaugural Bikini Olympia so she has what it takes to do well. She could be in the top three or on the outside of the top five. It’s her first show of the year so we’ll have to see if she has any bikini rust.

Natalie Pennington: Natalie is a bit of an x factor here. The judges are really drawn to her look and she’s already headed to the Olympia so she has no pressure to qualify. Look for her to be in the first or second call-out.

Talia Terese: Talia is the one to watch out of all the rookies making their pro debut. She won the 2011 NPC USAs just a couple weeks ago and in my opinion it was no contest when it came to picking the overall at that show. She lights up the stage with her smile and has the looks to stop traffic. The question will be how tight her her backside and was she able to stay on her diet since USAs. Competing in shows close together is good for some as they improve with each show and then others it works against them. She’s the rookie to watch, not that it’s a chore to do so.

Cristina Vujnich: She’s one of the few women who can rock short hair and pull it off. It works for her look and she’s an attractive woman. The one thing that could work against her is her facial expressions when she presents herself. I know it sounds silly but I often wonder what she’s thinking while on stage. When she smiles she’s golden when she’s not it’s like she’s trying out for Zoolander. I like her look but I think she’ll struggle to crack the top three in her debut. If she can make top five she should be stoked because even that will be tough here.

A few things I hope NOT to see from these pros today at prejudging. Just MY OPINIONS from someone who is in the pit at nearly every show and seen thousands of bikini competitors since its inception.
• Legs spread wide when posing from the back. It’s not classy and doesn’t flatter your physique so why do it?
• Flipping of the hair by snapping your neck around. Why? It makes you look like you do that for a living off stage. Don’t do it, it’s tacky.
• Don’t do the myspace face or duck bill lips when posing.
• Don’t open your mouth and gasp while posing. You look like a small mouth bass out of water. It’s not a good look, especially in still photos.
• Don’t try to be a cookie cutter. What posing works for one girl doesn’t work for everyone. Just because you see Ali Rosen do a shimmy and a hip pop at the end of her posing doesn’t mean you should. Ali does it and pulls it off as her “signature” pose, find one that works for you.

Cast your vote for who you think will win the Bikini show. I would not want to be a judge at this one, they will have their work cut out for them!

HARDBODY Europa Dallas: Figure Preview and Poll

This afternoon 25 hardbody IFBB Figure pros will take the stage in hopes of qualifying for the 2011 Olympia. The 2011 Europa Supershow is one of the last chances for women to qualify so look for a few women to step up their game.

The HARDBODY Breakdown:
No disrespect intended to the women in this show but I see this as a two woman race with the rest of the field hoping one slips up and it’s anyone’s game for third. The top two, at least on paper, look to be Ava Cowan and rookie pro Heather Dees. Ava has streamlined her physique and is looking for her first win as an IFBB Pro. It could come this weekend in Dallas. Heather Dees may have a little something to say about that. She’s competing in her first year as a pro and has solidified herself as one of the leading ladies. Heather has toned down her muscle and it’s helped her physique flow better. I look for her and Ava to stand next to each other in the middle and one of them leaving with their first pro wins.

That’s not to say they are both unbeatable. Heather’s done a number of shows already this year and some women aren’t able to be at their best every show. Will it effect Heather? Ava has been away from the stage since March which could mean she’s fresh or a little rusty.

Could someone beat Heather and Ava? Absolutely although I wouldn’t bet on it. So who gets in the third spot if Ava and Heather do go one and two? Julie Ann Kulla when on her game is good but if she comes in too small she’ll be not only on the outside of the top three but out of the top five. She could be in the mix but we’ll have to see what package she brings. Alea Suarez has been close to a top three finish since switching from bikini. She could be there. I really like Elvimar Sanchez’s look but she doesn’t come in tight enough to be in the mix. Michell Bates has a nice look and could be a top five contender. Charmayne Jackson has been knocking at the door of the top spots but will have her work cut out for her here.

Three rookies could shake things up in their pro debuts. Jamie DeBernard turned pro at the NPC USAs and Kavvy Sonhos and Rebecca Bowers won their class and turned pro at this year’s NPC Team Universe.

Cast your vote for who you think will win.

Hardbody Interview: Sonia Gonzales Bring’n it Back

The reigning Bikini Olympia champ, Sonia Gonzales is taking the stage this weekend at the Europa Supershow in Dallas. She was a little off her game at the 2011 Bikini International but she went back to the drawing board and is back. Will we see a new and improved Sonia? I saw a sneak preview at the NPC USAs when she was poolside doing a photo shoot and I can honestly say I’ve never seen her look better.  I caught up with the Bikini champ for a quick interview, read what she had to say.

Where ya living these days?
Hang’n in wine country… Temecula CA

You’re there just hanging out looking purdy or you still doing nails?
I’m still working in the salon p/t,, I love the beauty biz!!!

You’re the reigning Bikini Olympia champ – why compete in the Europa Supershow?
I wanna do a lil warm up.

Some peeps have criticized you saying you had no booty. I saw you doing a photo shoot with JM Manion in Vegas and looks like you rounded your rump. What workouts have you been doing to build your butt?
Ha, the booty? Funny you ask !!! All I’m going to reveal or say is that I had a very productive off-season and the booty got some TLC!!!

Have you changed your nutrition at all since the Arnold?
Yes I’ve a few cheat meals, I enjoyed my self!!! Good food and good times with friends and family.

Some thought you were a little off at the Bikini International, do you feel this show you are better than in Columbus?
Most definitely I work with Kim Oddo who is my nutritionist and trainer. We went back to the drawing board and made a few tweaks, and we are very happy with my progress.

What gives you the edge over your competition this weekend?
My determination, focus and love of the sport !!! Swagger baby!!!

One of the secrets in your and Adela’s arsenal is the waist cincher. I heard some of your competition started using this, will this help them beat you?
HAhaha Bring it!!! Their Cincher is tight, but mine is tighter!!!

When you hear your fellow competitors talk smack does it distract or motivate you?
Honestly I just last laugh. All that means to me is they are insecure. A little class goes a long way!!!

You’ve trained with Kim Oddo for several years, what’s the biggest benefit of having a trainer like Kimbo in your corner?
Kimbo… anybody who knows would say this trainer/nutritionist has a sixth sense about him. He definitely knows his stuff. He’s a perfectionist and he takes the guessing game out of it. He treats every competitor the same and his attitude is to WIN!!! He’s amazing!!! I’m forever loyal!!

Will you be 100% for this show or are you saving your best for the Olympia?
100% every show!!!

What will you be eating backstage before going on for prejudging?
I won’t know till game day !!!

New suit or no?
Nope, why change what works!!

Who makes your suits?
Chynna dolls, CJ swimwear and illusions by Aggie.

How long will we see Sonia Gonzales competing in Bikini?
I haven’t ever put a time limit on it.

How much cardio are you doing a day?
Maybe 20 mins

What song is cranked up in your headphones?
Some stuff by Adele, Rhianna, Eminen, a lil of everything

Anyone you wanna give a shout out to?
Just want to thank you to my family, friends, FMG, Kim Oddo, GNC and God !!! Thank you for all the love support.

Thanks Sonia and good luck.

Hardbody Europa Supershow Interview: Ava Cowan “Bring Value to Your Name”

The 2011 Europa Supershow has one of the largest figure lineups of the year. The competition on stage will be hotter than it is outside in the Texas heat and one of the competitors heating things up will be Ava Cowan. Ava has finished third in her last two shows. She leaped into top contender status at this year’s Figure International finish, placing behind Nicole Wilkins and Erin Stern. Pretty solid placing, right? Damn right. She went on to compete in the IFBB St. Louis Pro where she again finished third. Ava’s highest placing came in last year’s Ft. Lauderdale Cup where she was the runner-up. Might we see Ava win her first IFBB pro show this weekend?

I caught up with Ava as she heads into the Dallas Europa Supershow. She shares insight on running a business and how she’s used competing to help her build her brand. Check it out.

Currently live in: Delray Beach, Florida

How’s the supplement store going? Great!  We are doing very well, paying the bills and rent plus have a great new manager, Jimmy Anzardo. Who is great with running the store and with our customers!  So no complaints here.

What’s the biggest challenge of running a business? Finding people who you can trust with the keys to your business.  Mark and I travel a lot so we need to make sure we get great people to work with us.  Thankfully, Jimmy came to us and has been a great fit.  Also, knowing how and what products to put on the shelves is always something you can only learn with experience.  It also helps to find companies that are willing to help us promote their products so we can sell it in our store and create more awareness.

Ava Cowan is a name many women have come to know in the fitness industry. Can you look back and pinpoint a moment that was your “big break”?  There have been several high points that I feel have put my name “out there” so to speak.  But the biggest break would have to be my signing with Gaspari Nutrition in 2009.  They put me on the map on a whole other level with advertising Internationally.

What professional goals do you have that you’ve yet to achieve? A publishing contract.  I am an excellent writer and feel I could bring an already existing fan base to a magazine through regular articles and videos discussing nutrition, training and lifestyle concepts and techniques.

Has competing in the NPC/IFBB helped your business off the stage?  Yes, immensely. By being an IFBB figure athlete, I am able to compete against the top athletes in the world.  If you place at a top show, you are then considered the best “worldwide”. No other organization can give an athlete that much prestige.  By having the ability to be a top-ranking athlete, you are then able to market yourself in a ways that only the top athletes in the world can.  Worldwide recognition translates into more marketability as a competitor.  It had been my experience that the only way to get a great athlete contract is to be with the NPC and IFBB.

You have quite the fan base growing on Facebook and twitter. Do you recommend other women use social media to help their personal brand?  If you do not have an Internet presence you do not exist as a brand.  The power of creating a name is imperative to any thriving company.  That includes branding yourself.  You must bring value and an audience to your name.  The way to do that is through creating and maintaining an audience online.

How’s your training been since we last saw you on stage?  I feel good about my efforts regarding a total transformation with my physique.  With the help of Kim Oddo, we have come up with a look that is so much different than last year.  I have backed off from the massive amounts of weight training, and have just let my natural shape come back.  My body is curvier and I have a much more streamline/ feminine look than I previously did.

Biggest challenge prepping for this show:  I always struggle with being hungry.  I have been able to help my hunger by adding in more vegetables to fill me up.  I eat a ton of cucumbers with vinegar.

10 years from now what will Ava Cowan be doing? Living in a beautiful home on the ocean with a family of my own.

Favorite Gaspari protein flavor?  Milk Chocolate Myofusion.

After the Europa Dallas will you be doing Arizona or nothing until the Olympia? No, I will be doing the Olympia after Dallas.

Dianna Dahlgren Does Dallas

IFBB Bikini Pro Dianna Dahlgren has positioned herself as one of the top models in the biz and now she’s looking to do the same on the competitive stage. She hasn’t competed since last year’s Bikini Olympia and she was a little off her best there. What will we see from the California girl this weekend in Dallas? Can she bring the same swagga she shows in her photos to the stage and overtake the Bikini Olympia champ, Sonia Gonzales? DD checks in as she heads into this weekend’s Dallas Europa Super show.

ALMOST THERE!!!!!! KEEP GOING!!!!!
Wow! I can’t believe where the time has gone! Is it really August already!? Right now in my life I am very happy!! I’m closing in on the last days of prep before I head into the Dallas Europa and I am so ready for it! I have been working very hard for the last few months and I’m excited to see what will happen next weekend! For those of you who keep up with Hardbody.com you will know that I was supposed to do the New York Pro back in May and unfortunately I couldn’t pull myself together in time! It was very heart breaking for me, I am very hard on myself for things I don’t do when I say I am going to do them. But NY Pro was not the right time for me and I am so ecstatic that I have chosen Dallas Europa as my first show of the year! I have not competed since last year’s Olympia, so my overall goal here in Dallas is to just have fun! Get on that stage, work it, and wait for those judges to call my number! :)

The past few weeks have been some of the hardest, mentally. Nutrition and diet is the most important during your prep and I tell everyone that this is my biggest challenge of competing! So during this prep I have learned so much about dieting and what works for me. Learning your triggers and what to stay away from, I haven’t had to do this in over a year! So I forgot what it was like in some situations. I travel a ton for work, my second home is an airplane and a hotel room LOL but I have surprisingly made it work great for my program and didn’t make excuses! Got it handled!! So here we are, only a few days left of workouts before I fly out to Dallas. I’m finalizing all the ‘TO DOs’ of competing in a show. Flights, Hotel, Hotel Roomie (Brooke Mora! YAY), Tanning, Make up and Hair, Suit, Shoes… and POSING POSING POSING!

I’ll keep all of you updated on the show so make sure to follow me on twitter! @diannadahlgren or you can go find me on Facebook! I’m just so thankful, my support system has been amazing and Ive been treating myself very well, so I feel great headed into Dallas, not a worry in my mind! See you all there!

xoxo

2011 Europa Battle of Champions Figure Results

It was a nail biter at the 2011 Europa Show of Champions Figure competition last weekend in Hartford, Connecticut. Gen Strobo notched another pro win to her credit beating out a competitive group of up and comers. Strobo has a fast metabolism and many times comes in too stringy. She found the winning formula this time as she came in round and full. Jelena Abbou was at her all time best and had her sights set on returning to the Olympia stage. She managed to do that and narrowly missed her first pro win by one point. We might see Jelena on stage again before the Olympia rolls around.

While Strobo and Abbou battled it out for first and second a similar battle took place for the third and final Olympia qualification. Holly Beck edged out rookie Chikondi Mseka by one point to take home third. Chikondi made her pro debut here and showed that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Gina Trochiano rounded out the top five in the field of seventeen IFBB Figure Pros.

Hard Body Profile: Cover Model Jelena Abbou

Jelena Abbou is one of the top fitness models in the world and she’ll look to become one of the best in IFBB Figure this weekend. Jelena will be competing at the Europa Show of Champions in Hartford, Conneticut and judging by how she looks days out from the show, don’t bet against her leaving with a top three spot. She’s been to the Olympia stage before and we’ll see in a couple days if she can re-qualify.

Originally from Serbia but now calls New Jersey home, Jelena Abbou has stunning good looks and and an hour glass figure. At times her genetics have prevented her from doing well in the competitive figure division however she’s switched up her training and nutrition and balanced her physique from top to bottom. I caught up with the East Coast hard body on the heels of the Europa Super show.

Name: Jelena Aboou

Nickname as a kid: Jeca

Currently live in: Hackensack, NJ

Where did you grow up? Small little town in Serbia called Gornji Milanovac

When did you move to the United States? 1997

What made you decide to move to the United States? I wasn’t really planing to move for good but after visiting I decided to stay…so I never went back.

Do you ever go back to visit? My whole family is still there so yes I go to visit but not that often.

Did you play any sports growing up or how did you get started competing? Never played anything competitive just little bit of everything. I always liked watching fitness on ESPN when I was younger but since I had no gymnastic background and can’t dance to save my life I was so excited when figure first came out, so I decided to try. So ever since I got hooked!

What’s your family think of your competitions? They like it, not many girls in Sebia and especially not in my town that compete.

How did you get into modeling? I sent my pictures to Oxygen magazine for “future of fitness” and more then a year after I sent it they called me to test shoot for cover, and I made that cover.

Consider that your “Big break”? Yes it was my first cover.

What modeling jobs have you been doing lately? Aetrex shoes advertisement, catalogs and Landice treadmills

You tried your heels at bikini but now you’re back in Figure. Why the switch back to Figure? I just think my body shape is better for Figure, I get too lean and look too muscular for Bikini.

You’ve refined your physique and really look your best coming into this weekend’s show. What did you do differently with your diet? Switching from Bikini I had to start eating a little more protein and closer to the show less carbs.

What type of training do you do? I do moderate weights, my reps for upper are anywhere from 8-15 and lower 12-15.

How did you get those killer abs? Guess just born with it :) Haha no for real I’ve done weights for abs in my earlier years or training and just blessed with small waist.

What you mean you didn’t do a thousand crunches a day? Yeah no, never!

What projects have you been working on away from the stage? I’m working on my active wear clothing line, it’s called Pretty Phit. I’m very excited about it, something I always wanted to do. It’s high quality made of supplex, and HardBody ladies know all about quality and fit of supplex. Here is the web site www.prettyphit.com.

Rapid fire – first thing that comes to mind. OMG 2 days before the show!!

Favorite Cartoon: Tweedy bird

Favorite tv show: True Blood, Weeds

Favorite song right now: Eminem, Not Afraid

Last meal you ate consisted of: Just had my breakfast, egg whites and oats

First thing you are going to eat once the show is over: PIZZA and ice cream

Dog or Cat: Dog

Worst job you’ve ever had: Never had a job I really didn’t like.

Guys with beards are: Smelly LOL

Women with hairy backs are: Men

Goal for the Europa Super show: Top 3

Do you work with a trainer? I was now I’m on my own.

Thanks Jelena and all the best this weekend! See some of Jelena’s competition photos on Bodybuilding.com.

Europa Show of Champions Orlando: IFBB Bikini Preview & Poll

The IFBB Pro Bikini women are back on stage in Orlando. Last year, Nathalia Melo made her pro debut and took home top honors. Can she hold onto her crown? Eight other women have their eyes on the prize and will look to snatch it from her this weekend. Ed and Betty Pariso, the promoters of the event, will stage another great show for the fans of Florida. This is a two-day event taking place on April 29-30.

Hardbody 411:

Jaime Baird - Jaime is on a mission to collect her first pro win and she’ll give Nathalia a run for her money here. Jaime has the luxury of not having to travel for the show and those of you who compete know what an advantage this can be. She’s coming of a fifth place showing at the Bikini International and has really come into her own the last two shows. She’s confident, sexy, sassy and has what it takes to do well here.

Vanessa Campbell - This will be the first time we see Vanessa on stage this year. She finished the 2010 season with a 13th place finish at the Olympia. She should be in the mix for the top five at this show if she comes in with the package she presented at Team Universe, where she turned pro. She has the exotic looks that help her stand out from the competition and one of the few women who can rock the short hair and look good.

Trina Goosby - She took the 2010 season off to earn her Masters degree and made her pro debut last month. Trina placed 7th in a competitive line up at the St. Louis Pro. If she comes in a little bit tighter she’ll be in the mix for the top spots. I wasn’t in St. Louis to know how she presented herself but she obviously can hold her own.

Dayna Maleton - The Jersey girl is back and we’ll have to wait and see which Dayna shows up on stage. She has a great physique, there is no question about that. She stays in shape year-round and if anything she’s a bit too lean/muscular looking on stage. She’s one of those women in between divisions, a little too small currently for figure and a little too muscular for bikini. She’s brought a physique that could do well but presented like a deer in the headlights. If she brings a tone physique with confidence and grace to the stage she’ll be in the top callout, if not she’ll be on the outside looking in.

Nathalia Melo - Ah Melooooo. The Brazilian is Back and looking to hold onto her crown. She was at her all-time best at the Bikini International, where she finished third. I wouldn’t have had her lower than second there but hey that’s just me. If she brings the same package and presentation to this stage that she had in Columbus, she’ll keep her crown. If she gets a little nutty and tries to do too much like she did at the Europa Dallas, Jaime Baird or someone else will be the Queen of the night. We’ll have to wait and see which Melo shows up.

Samantha Morris - Samantha had a less than stellar debut at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup in 2010 and will look to redeem herself this weekend. She’s a taller girl and needs to come in tighter in order to hang with the top women. She was a consistent top three contender in the NPC ranks but it’s a new ball game in the pro league. We’ll see if she stepped up her game and is on the money in Orlando.

Khanh Nguyen – Khanh is a character. When she’s offstage and in photo shoots she’s a hoot. If she can channel some of that energy to the stage she’ll move up. Her biggest problem in the past was her boobs were all you saw on stage. She didn’t pose with confidence and it hurt her placings. She found a suit that strapped the girls down and now if she can nail her presentation she’ll move up. She has a great physique and could be top five here.

Kira Rivera - Kira competed in a number of shows last year and was up and down in her placings. She had an impressive debut at this show last year with a fourth place finish. She’s had a few months off from the stage and we’ll see if she can repeat her showing of last year. It will come down to how well she presents herself on stage.

Kristy Robbins - Kristy has been in the game for awhile. The crew she’s competing against may not even be familiar with who she is but she’s ready to make them notice this weekend. Kristy was the 2002 Overall NPC Nationals Figure Champion and placed fifth at the 2003 Figure International. This will be her debut in bikini and her first show since 2004. Welcome back Kristy.

Europa Super Show Review

Check out my review of the 2010 Europa Super Show. I break down each division and give my two cents on the competition. Each of the winners tasted victory for the first time, which is pretty cool and something you rarely see on the pro stage. Congrats to all the competitors.

Clueless Dallas Blogger Covers the Europa

I ran across a blog on The Dallas Observer today and it’s a perfect example of a writer not taking the time to be accurate in his/her reporting. The author admits he’s never been to a bodybuilding competition and his ignorance shows. Here’s a small sample of what I’m referring to:

By late Saturday afternoon, I’d missed the “Hot ‘Fit’ Moms” competition, but just made it in time for the women’s bodybuilding finals. Called onstage by a white-suited guy brimming with Shooter McGavin sleaze, women from around the world took their turns running through elaborate routines that were equal parts yoga, striptease and gymnastics, in a series of moves to accentuate their unlikely contours. Ripping off a coat to start her routine, German woman woke babies in the crowd with the first beats of her driving techno backing music. An American bodybuilder danced to a club mix of “Over the Rainbow,” skipping onstage with a picnic basket and peeling off her clothes piece by piece, revealing a new Wizard of Oz character costume with each layer.

I did get a chuckle out of Bob Cicherillo being referred to as Shooter McGavin (Happy Gilmore reference) but the author clearly was more interested in Bob’s coat than what he was announcing. There was no professional women’s bodybuilding in the show and the routines he’s referring to are those of Fitness competitors.

shooter
Shooter McGavin and KISS impostor.

I don’t know if the author was trying to be funny or just clueless by referring to the Europa Super Show as EuropaCon but I do kinda like the name. I shouldn’t be surprised that “mainstream media” would miss the boat on their coverage however a little ground work can go a long way.

Europa Super Show Weekend Update

Yesterday the ladies took to the stage at the IFBB Europa Super show and there were a few surprises. The bikini top three will be Ali Rosen, Nathalia Melo and Amanda Latona. The show is between Latona and Melo who have the best butts in all of bikini. Melo was off her stride a bit from previous shows. Her upper body was a bit too lean, make-up slightly off and the posing we’ve grown to expect and love wasn’t on point. Latona stepped up her game and brought a smaller, slightly tighter physique from earlier in the year and I look for her to take the show. Ali Rosen has a pretty face and sexiness to her and will land in third. I’d still like to see her pose from the front when she comes out for her individual shots. We could see Bianca Binno in the 4th place position and if she does she’ll head to the Olympia. It looks like Monique Minton Ricardo could miss the top five in this show. The top three women are already qualified for the big dance next month.

dallasbikini0151
Amanda and Ali go after Nathalia at the Europa Super show.

Fitness physique portion had Myriam Capes, Bethany Wagner, Shannon Meteraud and Alti Bautista in the first call out. I like Wagner’s physique the best with Meteraud in second. Alti showed she still has it after a six year absence from the Fitness stage. Myriam is in great condition and is in the third or 4th position heading into tonight’s finals. The routines are kicking off the finals at 2:30pm and I look for it to come down to Shannon and Myriam for the win.

dallasfitness0285
Your guess is as good as mine on what was going on here.

The Figure portion of the show had a few surprises when the dust settled. Two of the favorites heading into the show may be absent from the top five. Mindi Smith was way off her mark and resembled nothing like Phoenix Pro or Figure International. She has six weeks to get her groove back if she hopes to be in the top five at the Olympia. Ava Cowan had hoped to improve upon her 4th place showing in Jacksonville but it won’t happen in Dallas. The judges appear to favor Terri Turner for the win in this show. If she does win which I believe she will, it will be her first pro victory. I like Alicia Harris for the win but it looks like she’ll take second. Teresa Anthony appears to have a lock on third place. Josie Zamora could slip into the 4th place spot and if she does she’ll be Olympia qualified since the top three already are. Monica Mark brought a smaller physique and is in the mix for a top five spot but not enough to get into the top three. This was a big show and a number of women showed improvements while others slipped. I saw a number of simply missteps like bad hair, bad make-up, poor tanning and bad suit choice. These may seem like little mistakes but they all add up and count towards the overall look and ultimately the placings.

dallasfigure0368
Alicia and Teresa are gunn’n for number one but will likely settle for second and third.

We’ll see how it all shakes down in a few hours. I’ll provide a full contest report after tonight’s finals.

The fitness routines will kick things off at 2:30 pm at the Europa Super show in Dallas. Follow along on twitter @hardbodynews and @BBcomcontests.

The IFBB Bikini pros will start the show off, followed by the Men’s 202. The Fitness women will only be judged in their 2-piece swimsuit today and their routines tomorrow at the finals. Nicole Moneer Guerrero Gets A Page of Love in The Chicago Sun Times

Props to IFBB Bikini Pro Nicole Moneer Guerrero for the recent exposure in the Chicago Sun Times. I never would have guessed Nicole was 37 – pretty awesome. She has the physique and look of an early 20-something. Follow Nicole on twitter @nmoneerguerrero. Congrats on the exposure Nicole and good luck in Dallas.

BIKINI FIT: NICOLE GOES PRO FOR SHOW
When it comes to being fit, Nicole Moneer Guerrero is it.

She is a certified personal trainer at Lifetime Fitness in Schaumburg, a fitness model, a spokesmodel and more.

The former Luvabull won her International Federation of Body-Builders pro card in July and will make her IFBB pro debut Saturday in the women’s pro bikini category at the Europa Super Show in Dallas.

Not that she lacks for experience. She has the 2009 Ms. Bikini Classic Universe title, among others, to her credit.

”Challenge yourself,” she told Quick Hits during a recent visit to the gym, where she demonstrated one-armed pushups, among other exercise (watching was enough to wear out yours truly).

The soon-to-be 38-year-old definitely follows her own advice.

Naturally.

”I’ve been lifting weights for over 17 years, but I’m not big and bulky,” she said.

A quick glance showed she was correct.

Working out appears to be Guerrero’s fountain of youth.

”I tell all of my 20-year-old friends and clients and people I know that it gets better in your 30s,” she said. ”I’m definitely mentally stronger now. Nothing can stop me.”

And physically?

”I’ve had a few things stop me physically,” she said. ”But for the most part, I push through it.”

Europa Super Show – Women’s Fitness Preview & Poll

This weekend 14 IFBB Fitness Pros are slated to take the stage at the Europa Super Show in Dallas, Texas. Last year Adela Garcia made her return to competition and took home top honors. Myriam Capes was the runner-up to Adela last year and will look to move up a spot this weekend. Can she do it? Let’s breakdown the women who will be standing her her way.

europa2010

2010 Europa Super Show Competitor List & Hardbody Breakdown:

Alti Bautista - Alti last competed in 2007 but that was in figure. It’s been SIX years since she competed in fitness. Alti placed 7th at the 2004 Europa Super Show (it was called the Southwest pro that year). She tells me she’s ready to have some fun. I’m looking forward to seeing what she brings to the stage.

Sonja Bruce - Sonja turned pro at the 2005 Team Universe Fitness contest and has only one pro show under her belt. She placed out of the top 10 at the West Palm Beach Pro in 2007 but is back looking to improve upon that placing. We’ll see what she brings and how her physique looks with a little away from the stage.

Myriam “Mimi” Capes - Myriam has positioned herself as a top contender if she’s in shape. I give her mad props for improving her physique over the years. I remember seeing her compete in this show back in 2007 and thought she was a little bulldozer. She’s always had the gymnastic skills and performs a solid routine but her physique has held her back. She’s refined her physique and improved her routines… now the question is can she bring both to the stage at the same time? She wasn’t able to at the Fitness International but did redeem herself at the Europa Orlando. She’s one of the favorites this weekend and we’ll see if she can move out of the bridesmaid spot.

Regiane Da Silva - Regiane puts on one of the most entertaining routines and has some crazy skills. She’ll bring another kick ass routine to the stage but how will her physique look? If she can make the top call-out in the physique round look for her to be in the mix for an Olympia qualification.

Autumn Edwards – Autumn will be making her IFBB debut after turning pro at the 2010 NPC Jr Nationals. She’s one of the taller competitors in the show and has great shape to her physique. I’d like to see her have a different cut to her suit that she wore at the Jr Nationals and come in a bit tighter with her conditioning. Autumn has the potential to make an immediate impact in Fitness and I could see her landing in the top five.

Allison Ethier – Allison will make the trip down from Canada looking to leave with an Olympia qualification. She’ll have her work cut out for her and it will come down to how her physique looks. If she can get a top call-out in the physique round she’ll have a chance but if she’s not conditioned I don’t see her in the top five here. She’s improved since her debut at the Fitness International and can be a contender his weekend if her physique is conditioned.

Ryall Garber-Vasani – She was 9th at this show last year and will look to improve upon it here. She has a nice physique and if her routine has improved she could move up. Ryall may have been a little too hard last year but we’ll see what she brings this year and if she can improve her placing.

Cinzia Massaro-Clapp – This will be Cinzia’s IFBB debut and makes the long trek down from Alaska. I applaud Cinzia for the energy she brings to the stage in the beginning of her routines and she’ll need to maintain it throughout if she hopes to hang in the pros. She always starts strong but seems to get winded and run out of gas the last 30 seconds of her routine. I’m hoping we see a different routine than that of JR. Nationals and Team Universe. One could say well it helped her turn pro so why change it? Fair point. Maybe I’m missing something but I don’t get the FEDEX package followed by chipmunk voices. I’m never a fan of when a competitor mouths the words to their music. We’ll see what she brings to the stage this weekend and how she matches up against the season pros.

Stacey McDowell - Last year she told me she was retiring (read the article here) but that didn’t last long. She competed earlier this year at the New York Pro Fitness and placed 10th. I always enjoy seeing Stacey’s display of flexibility but will have to find out why she decided to come back and compete. If she hopes to crack the top five here she’ll need to bring a tight, conditioned physique.

Shannon Meteraud - Don’t count Shannon out just yet. I was critical of Shannon last year at the Fitness Olympia and felt her physique looked tired compared to the other competitors. She’s taken the beginning of this year off from competing and is ready to show the rookies how things are done. Shannon was 7th at the Olympia and took top honors at the 2009 Atlantic City Fitness. This stage has been favorable to her in the past and is the one to beat heading into this weekend’s competition. When the first place name is announced on Saturday afternoon don’t be surprised if Shannon Meteraud.

Daniela O’Mara - This will be Daniela’s pro debut. Name not familiar to ya? It’s because she calls Australia home and many times competitors outside of the United States don’t get the same recognition as the stateside competitors. She competed at the 2010 Arnold Amateur (placing 4th) and in May was awarded her IFBB pro card. We’ll see how she stacks up against the competition here but I like the look of “Australia’s Fitness Princess”.

Traci Redding – We last saw Traci on this stage in 2008 where she placed 13th. She’s able to entertain the hometown crowd with her routines but her physique has hindered her in the pros. She’ll need to bring a streamlined body and a routine that is non-stop action to crack a top spot. Rest assured she’ll have one of the loudest cheering sections in attendance.

Kristina Rojas – Kristina cracked the top five earlier this year at the Orlando Pro Fitness and is looking to match and improve upon it here. She brings a tight, conditioned physique and at times can almost be too conditioned. If she brings a balanced physique with the high energy routine look for her to be a contender here. I like what she brings to the stage and should be in the mix of the top five.

Bethany Wagner – Bethany has one of the best physiques, and arguably thee best, in the competition if it’s conditioned. She has great shape and well balanced. This show will be extra special for her since her fiancé is competing in the 202 Bodybuilding division. I really like her physique and if her routine is on point she’ll be in the hunt for the title.

2010 IFBB Europa Supershow – Bikini Preview & Poll

The 2010 IFBB Europa Supershow Bikini lineup has seen a number of changes in the last few days. It looks like there will be 14 women competing in the show but we’ll have to see what the final list looks like on Thursday. This will be a competitive show with a number of women already qualified for the Olympia. It’ll be tough for any women not already qualified to crack the top three in this line up. It’s not impossible but it will be a challenge.

Competitor List & Hardbody Breakdown:

Bianca Binno - She made her pro debut last weekend in Jacksonville and looked great. She’s tall and doesn’t carry a lot of muscle but bikini shouldn’t have too much muscle. I like her Penelope Cruz look-alike-look and what she brings to the stage. She has a very swimsuit type of look to her physique.

Jennifer Dietrick – She was 8th at the Pittsburgh Pro Bikini and 11th at the Muscle Contest Pro Bikini. She has a nice physique and if she can bring better presentation than in her previous shows she could move up.

Janet Harding - If perseverance was awarded in bikini, Janet would be the recipient. She’s competed in nearly every bikini show and has yet to match her 5th place finish in Orlando. She ditched the BAM posing in Jacksonville but still landed in 14th. Can she crack the top five here? My swami crystal ball says no but I’ve been wrong more than once.

Safiya Johnson – The bikini division is definitely a better fit for Safiya’s body than fitness but she’ll need to tighten it up a bit to improve her placings. She was 15th in Jacksonville.

Amanda Latona – She’s one of the women already qualified for the Olympia. Amanda took care of business in her first pro show and the pressure is off going into this contest. She has one of the best butts in the IFBB and is without question one of the most stunning women in the bikini ranks. I’d like to see Amanda bring the stage presence she brought to the FLEX bikini model search contest. It had a bit more sass than she had in her pro debut. She has a little more muscle than some of the other women so we’ll see how that compares in this contest.

Brandy Leaver - Brandy has a baby about 8 months ago. Talk about a transformation! She notched an overall figure win to her belt in Tampa and went on to turn pro at the NPC USAs last month. She has a nice look to her and could be a top contender here. Brandy will make her pro debut on the same stage as her husband, Brandon Curry. Brandon will be competing in his second pro show.

Dayna Maleton – Dayna is one woman who is on the line of figure and bikini. She stopped training and ate junk food to prepare for her last competition. Why? Because genetically she’s gifted and puts on muscle easily. If she ate differently and trained like “normal” she’d likely have a competitive Figure physique. She’s back to try her hand at bikini. The issue with Dayna is her presentation. When she comes out on stage you can tell she is nervous and has a deer in the headlights look to her. If she can put the fears away and rock some confidence on stage she could move up.

Nathalia Melo – The Brazilian Bombshell has set the standard for bikini and remains undefeated. The thing that separates Nathalia from the rest of the competition is her presentation. She’s confident, sexy and not over the top with her posing. The energy she projects isn’t fake or contrived, it’s genuine and it comes across when she presents her physique. She has the face, booty and body for bikini. I look for Nathalia to leave with another win under her bikini and head into the the Olympia as the one to beat.

Nicole Moneer-Guerrero – Nicole will be making her pro debut after turning pro at this year’s Team Universe contest. She has a nice physique and good look to her. I felt her posing was a little much at the NPC Jr Nationals but she corrected that in New York and it paid off. She could be a top five contender here.

Monique Ricardo – Don’t recognize the name? It’s Monique “Momo” Minton. Monique has been in stealth mode the last few months and got married along the way. She’s already Olympia qualified and has the luxury of driving the the show from home. Look for a tighter, smaller Monique than you saw in California. Monique should be in the top spots but it won’t be easy.

Ali Rosen – Ali has been on a winning streak notching an overall win at the NPC USAs and then taking top honors at the Jacksonville Pro. She’s a pretty girl who presents herself in a sexy, cutesy manner. One thing that is a little different than other women is that she never poses straight on when she comes out for her individual poses. I asked her about it and she said she likes to show her best angles. I can’t argue with that but we never get to see her body from the front, only the side. She’ll face a different judging panel than in her last two shows so we’ll see how she fairs against some stiffer competition. Personally, Ali’s physique is a little too soft for my liking but we’ll see what the judges think on Friday.

Alea Suarez – Alea is the opposite of Ali. Alea comes in looking a little too hard. Her skin looks dehydrated on stage. I’d like to see her soften up a bit from Jacksonville and come in with a healthier look to her physique.

Sonya Vecchiarelli – Sonya made her pro debut in Jacksonville and had a few rookie mistakes. She’s a cute girl but it was lost on stage. Her overall presentation was a bit lackluster. Her hair, make-up and overall presentation needs to improve if she hopes to move up. If she can bring some sass to the stage, which she showed when she turned pro at the 2009 NPC Jr. Nationals she could move up. She has everything it takes to be in the mix but needs to put it together and present it on stage.

Nathalie Waples – Natalie is finding her groove since making the switch to bikini. If she can ramp up the energy and presentation this time around she’ll move up.

The top five will be very competitive. Will Ali make it three in a row? Can Amanda Latona top the charts for the first time in bikini? Can Nathalia remain unbeaten? We’ll find out on Saturday afternoon when the results are announced. Hardbody Hindsight – Hartford Bikini

Another IFBB Pro Bikini competition is in the books and three more women are headed to the inaugural Bikini Olympia. The event wasn’t the strongest line-up of the year but it was competitive. I’ve been in attendance for every IFBB Bikini Pro show, with the exception of New Zealand. There are some things that I find work well and others that are distracting. Keep in mind each show has different judges and what one panel likes another may not. What I gravitate towards isn’t always what the judges reward. There will be a variety of opinions and we’re all entitled to them but doesn’t mean we’ll all agree. Who cares if we disagree, I’m not telling anyone who to be just giving my opinion. Let’s break it down…

hartford

1. Dianna Dahlgren – As I mentioned heading into this show she would be improved and a favorite for the win. Toot, toot goes my horn on calling this one but hold on a minute. Dianna improved her presentation from her debut but still needs to work on it if she wants to hang with the likes of Melo and Nagrani. Many of her poses make her look too straight up and down. She has one of the best bikini butts in the biz and presents it well from the rear poses. Job well done by the youngster and has some momentum going into her next show. We’ll see if she can present herself a little curvier from the front and how she stacks up in Dallas against tougher competition.

2. Jessica Jessie – The Queen of the “side walk” had a strong showing in her pro debut as most expected. The photos don’t show the presentation of bikini competitors and you have to watch video or see the “side walk” in person to understand what I’m referring to. She basically looks straight ahead while her body is turned walking on stage. Personally, I’m not a fan of it but props to her for being able to do it and not trip. She has a “pageanty” presentation to her which the judges seem to gravitate towards. Her suit is flattering to her physique and fits her personality on stage. Her physique has improved from Jr Nationals and will need to continue if she hopes to crack the top five at the Olympia.

3. Dianna Fields – Dianna has a good bikini butt. I’m not a fan of her presentation and it’s a little too much sass for my liking. The mouth open gasping while hitting poses is not a flattering look. Props to her for securing a bit to the Olympia. I wouldn’t have her in my top three but hey I’m not a judge.

4. Jelena Abbou – Talk about a turn around in two weeks. She finished in the top ten at the New York Pro Figure and dramatically changed her physique for this show. Her legs and butt are always areas that plague her. She brought them down and rocked a new suit. I would have had her in the top three. My guess is that the judges felt her upper body was too hard and her butt a little too soft. I think bikini is the division for her and could see an Olympia qualification if she competes in one of the remaining shows

5. Kat Holmes – Kat tightened up a bit from Tampa but her lower half continues to hold her back from placing higher. If she tightens her conditioning a bit she could move up in a future show. She should be content with a fifth place spot.

6. Tabitha Klausen-Leandri – She’s one tall drink of water. Nearly 6’0″ without heels she towers over some of the other competitors but holds her own. I think her suits and presentation held her back from a higher spot at this show. I think she had one of the best physiques in the show and could have been a couple places higher. If she ditches the distracting strings on the bikini she’ll likely move up.

7. Jessica Lawrence – I had her in or around this placing. Jessica has a nice physique but has no energy on stage. If she could bring some life to her presentation she could move up but until then you’ll likely see her out of the top five

8. Kelly Gonzalez – Kelly’s pro debut was a decent start. She’s a tiny competitor and has a nice physique. If she continues to improve her presentation she could move up.

9. Natalie Waples – HUGE, HUGE improvement from Tampa. Natalie ditched the first time bikini mistakes and made major improvements at this show. She seemed more comfortable, had a better suit and improved presentation. If she continues to get comfortable on stage you could see her place higher. I would have had no problem seeing her a few places higher here

10. Janet Harding – Oh Janet what are we going to do with you? I’ve coined her the Emeril of bikini. If you’re not sure what I’m referring to check out Chef Emeril and his “BAM” video here. Janet had a different hairstyle, a new suit and new posing. The hair color was good. The new suit – a nice improvement. The posing – horrible. I told her this backstage and asked her what was up. She said she’s working with a new coach and hadn’t perfected her poses just yet. When she came out at prejudging she hit her poses fast and furious like Emeril on his cooking show. BAM! BAM! She did slow things down a bit at the night show which was good.

11. Juliette Primak – This was her IFBB pro debut and went relatively unnoticed. She’s cute but will need to tighten up the butt and present with some energy to make her mark in future shows.

Notes:
• Long strings on the bikini bottoms are distracting. I think it looks best if you choose a suit without the strings on the bottoms.

• Pose with class and not like you’re looking for a pole to climb. If the bikini division is to be taken serious competitors need to keep it classy. I don’t see it much in the pros but the amateur shows are plagued with it. The IFBB pros set the tone for other competitors. Many women in the NPC ranks emulate what the pros do. Pros – keep that in mind when you’re on stage as many women want to be in your shoes.

•  Presentation is everything in bikini. Looking at photos is great but doesn’t tell even 1/2 of what the judges are looking for. Smile and project positive energy on stage. Remember whatever you’re thinking it will be magnified by 10 fold to the audience.

• Know your body and your angles. A pose that works for one competitor may not work for you. Create an illusion that makes you look curvy and sexy.

Dianna Dahlgren bounced back from her first pro show to win the inaugural Europa Battle of Champions. She took straight firsts from the judges. Jessica Jessie was second in her IFBB Pro debut and Diana Fields moved up into third place. Jelena Abbou placed a disappointing 4th. Personally, I had her in the top 3 but I’m not a judge. I’ll share my breakdown later on the contest. Congrats to all the women going to the bikini Olympia.
