2011 IFBB Border State Pro Figure Results

The 2011 IFBB Border States Pro Figure is a wrap and Teresa Anthony proved to be victorious once again. This was Teresa’s second pro win in a row and the third in her IFBB career. Her first pro victory came at this show last year. Coming in second was Krissy Chin who narrowly missed an Olympia qualifying spot at the Houston Pro. Krissy avenged her 4th place finish from that show and is now qualified for the 2012 Figure Olympia. Jamie DeBenard came in third once again, a spot she held at the Houston Pro just a couple weeks ago.

Natalie Waples bounced back from 16th in Houston to a top five spot here. She finished in the fourth place spot and just narrowly missing out on an Olympia qualification. Crystal Chiles is one I mentioned who could be a contender at this show and she proved me right. Crystal finished in the fifth place position, the highest of her IFBB Pro career. Candice Lewis tied with Crystal for fifth and if she heads into Kentucky next week, I still think she’s a top three contender.

Since Teresa and Jami were already qualified for the Olympia, there’s only one additional Olympia qualifier from this show and that’s Krissy. Next year only the winner of the show will be qualified for the big dance. The next IFBB Pro Figure show takes place in Louisville, Kentucky on November 5th and will be the last chance for a top three qualification.

2011 IFBB Border States Pro Figure Preview

This weekend 17 IFBB Figure pros will head to San Diego, California for the Border States competition. Promoter Jon Lindsay always does a great job with his pro shows that are held in conjunction with a National Qualifying NPC event. Our West Coast correspondent Ron “Yogi” Avidan will be in attendance and keeping us updated on the action. Things get started at the Scottish Rite Event Center at 11am with the prejudging and the finals will begin at 6:30pm.

The Hardbody Breakdown:
This is one of the last IFBB Figure competitions where the top three women will qualify for the 2012 Olympia. Teresa Anthony and Jami DeBenard are already qualified so we could potentially see one additional woman qualify in this line up.

Leading Contenders:
Teresa Anthony has found her groove and don’t look for her to slow down here. She’s coming off a win at the Houston Pro where she narrowly defeated Jelena Abbou. Look for her to be in the top call-out and compared for her third pro victory and second win in a row. She’s also the defending champion and looking to retain her title.

Krissy Chin came close to qualifying at the Houston Pro and many felt she was at her all-time best, or close to it. She should be in the hunt once again but cracking the top three won’t be a walk in the park. Look for her to be in the top five but where is the question.

Jami DeBenard has been on a roll since turning pro at the 2011 NPC USA. She’s already qualified for the 2012 Figure Olympia with her third place finish at the Houston Pro so the pressure is off her to land in the top three. She’ll of course be gunning for her first pro win. The judges like what she’s bringing to the stage and look for her to be in the top call-out once again.

Candice Lewis made her pro debut at the 2011 Ft. Lauderdale Cup and showed tons of potential. She was the overall winner at this year’s Jr. Nationals and has the genetics to be a contender in the pro division. Her lower body needed to be a little tighter, specifically her quads to match her upper body at her debut. If she comes in tiny bit tighter in the lower body, don’t be surprised if you see her in the top three.

Potential Contenders:
Jaime Cash may not be a name that you are familiar with however Jaime Meade might be. We interviewed her back in 2008 before she turned pro, if you missed it check it out here. She’s since left her goats behind, been remarried and ready to hit the pro stage again. She was 14th at the 2010 Phoenix Pro, her IFBB debut. She has the genetics to do well but we’ll have to see how the time away from the stage has served her.

Crystal Chiles was 6th at this show last year and if she comes in a bit tighter from behind she could be in the hunt here. I look for her to be in the first or second call-out and the potential to be in the hunt for a qualification if she’s on the money.

Meriza DeGuzman-Ciccone is shown on the poster as a co-emcee so she might be joining her husband Pete at the microphone after she ditches her posing suit at the finals. Meriza has been up and down in the Figure division and has yet to crack the top five in her last few shows. She’s one of the shorter competitors will could work against her in this line up. At times she comes in too hard and it hurts her. That’s the tricky part of being a shorty. If you come in too soft it can often make you look out of condition to the taller women, come in too lean and you look jacked. We’ll see what she brings this time around.

Allison Frahn continues to get favorable call-outs however I gotta say I don’t see it. It’s nothing personal however when you see striations in a figure competitor’s glutes I don’t think that should be rewarded. She was fifth at the Houston Pro but you’ll see a different set of judges at this show. We’ll see where she fares but don’t be shocked if she is in the first call-out or two.

Natalie Waples was left out of the call-outs in Houston when she should have been in the top ten. Unfortunately for her she has a 16th place finish on her resume at no fault of her own. She should finish in the top 10 here and could potentially be in the hunt for the top five. She’ll have her work cut out for her to get into that top three and return to the Olympia but never say never.

Competitor of Note:
Rosalind Vanterpool has a sic physique however it’s often “too muscular” for Figure. She’ll likely be told the same thing here unless she’s stripped some muscle off. She’s someone who I think could come in how she has at previous shows and do well in the upcoming IFBB Women’s Physique division.

We’ll see how things turn out on Saturday October 29, 2011. For more information and tickets visit MuscleContest.com.

IFBB Border States Pro Figure Results

Another IFBB Pro Figure event is in the books and Teresa Anthony took home her first pro win. Teresa has found her stride since placing seventh at the 2010 Figure Olympia. She was in the runner-up position by one point at last week’s Houston Pro and she scored a unanimous victory in San Diego. Felicia Romero was on her heels in the second place position by two points. Fan favorite, Ava Cowan moved into an Olympia qualifying spot with her third place finish. If she can tighten up just a bit, look for her to be a threat to the top spot.

Rounding out the top five was Deena Walsh and Kristin Nunn. Kristin continues to be a contender in every show she enters but is still looking for that Olympia qualification. As I predicted in my Border States Figure Preview, Deena Walsh was the dark horse. She proved to be a worthy pro by placing fourth in her pro debut.

IFBB Border States Pro Figure Preview

This weekend 22 IFBB Figure Pros will take the stage in San Diego for the Border States Pro. Promoter Jon Lindsay also has a NPC event that will feature over 180 competitors. This is going to be a very competitive show. Our West Coast correspondent, Ron “Yogi” Avidan will be there covering the action.

This show has twice as many pros as last weekend’s Houston Pro and will be a competitive group or IFBB Figure Pros. One point separated Courtney West and Teresa Anthony at the Houston Pro. Can the rookie West make it two in a row? She’ll need to be a little sharper than last week to leave victorious in this line up. She’ll face top contender Felicia Romero and a deeper line up.

Felicia Romero is coming off a fifth place showing at the 2010 Figure Olympia and presented one of her best looks to date. If she brings that look to the stage she’ll be top three. If she isn’t on point and brings the look we saw earlier in the year at the Phoenix Pro she’ll be on the outside looking in on the top spots. Ava Cowan returns to the stage and is one of the fan favorites. Can she become one of the judges’ favorites?

**Update: Houston Pro Figure winner Courtney West will be sitting out this show due to the demands of college. She hopes to get an Arnold (Figure International) invite as her next contest. She’s more than proved she’s worthy of that.

This definitely makes the show a bit more interesting for the top spots.

Who will win the 2010 IFBB Border States Pro Figure?
View Results

The Hardbody Breakdown:

Teresa Anthony – Teresa has found her groove and should find herself in the top call-out. She’s still looking for her first pro win. It could come at this contest but it won’t come easy. She’ll face a tougher line up than the Houston show where she finished second. Look for her to be in the top five here.

Julia Aragon - Julia will be making her pro debut after winning her class at the 2010 NPC USAs. She’ll need to come in a bit tighter from the backside if she wants to hang with the top pros. She has nice shape and if she can present it well she’ll have a successful debut.

Michelle Bates - Michelle will be making her pro debut after winning the tall class at the 2010 NPC Nationals. Michelle has a nice look and it we’ll have to see how she stacks up against the pros.

Melanie Burger - Melanie took home the NPC Masters Nationals Figure 35+ Overall title a few weeks ago and will make her debut at this contest. She battled it out in the NPC ranks for the past few years and will start her journey in the pro ranks this weekend.

Crystal Chiles - Cystal will look to move up from her 9th place showing at the Phoenix Pro. She was 13th at this show last year.

Krissy Chin - Krissy is on that bubble where she might be “too muscular” for what the judges are looking for but it all depends on who she’s compared to. She continues to refine her physique and depending who she stands next to she either holds her own or over powers the others, specifically in her delts. She’ll look to move up from her Houston showing and return to the Olympia stage.

Ava Cowan – Ava returns to the stage in hopes of qualifying for the 2011 Olympia. She came close her debut at the Jacksonville Pro and will have her hands full here. Can she be in the mix? Certainly but it won’t be easy. She’ll have to be at her best to land in a top three spot on Saturday night.

Carin Hawkins - Carin will also look to move up from her Houston showing. She’ll need to be a little bit tighter than last week but could be a top five contender here.

Mandy Henderson - The shorty from Cali will be making her IFBB pro debut. Mandy battled it out in the NPC ranks and was consistently in the top five from show to show before finally turning pro at this year’s NPC USA. If she comes in tight she can hold her own. She’ll have to nail her posing from the back, which has plagued her at times, and she’ll need to be in her best condition. Mandy will be up against a tall group here but could be a contender if on point.

Amy Lee Martin - Amy took home the overall NPC USA trophy in 2008 but has yet to find her groove in the pro ranks. She’s taken some time off and we’ll see if her improvements are enough to put her in the mix.

Christina Mehling – Christina was out of the top 15 in this year’s Europa Super Show and it will be tough for her to land in the mix of a top spot here. Nothing is impossible but given the depth of the line-up she’ll likely be on the outside looking in on the top five.

Kristin Nunn – Nunnchuck has improved her physique over the months and will look to be in the mix here. She can be a top five competitor and has been in the mix before. I look for her to definitely be in the top two callouts but where is a toss up.

Mindi O’Brien – We haven’t seen Mindi on stage since she limped off during her 2009 Fitness Olympia routine. Mindi has always been known as having a more muscular physique and unless she’s totally transformed her body since the injury I don’t see her being a top contender here. We’ll have to wait and see what physique she brings for her cross over to Figure.

Kiana Phi - Kiana has nice shape and will be making her pro debut after turning pro at the 2010 Team Universe. She’ll make the trip from Oregon to try her hand in the big leagues.

Felicia Romero - Felicia showed one of her best looks to date at the 2010 Olympia and nearly landed in fourth but had to settle for fifth. If she brings a similar physique to the San Diego stage she’ll be a contender for the top spot. She’s improved her legs and her physique is more balanced than in year’s past. As long as we don’t see the physique she brought to the Phoenix Pro we should see her in the top call-out. A fresh and rest Felicia could be the biggest threat to this lineup.

Shala Singer - Shala will be making her pro debut after turning pro at this year’s Team Universe contest. She has nice shape and we’ll have to see what physique she brings to the pro stage to see if she’s a contender.

Masae Tagami - Masae brings a good deal of muscle to the stage and will face an uphill battle to be in the mix here. She placed 10th at this year’s California Pro and will hope to improve upon it here.

Sabrina Taylor – She was on the outside of the top 10 at the 2010 Phoenix Pro and will hope to improve upon that showing here. She took will face an uphill battle to get into the mix with this line up.

Deena Walsh – Deena could be one to watch to shake things up in her pro debut. She found success on this stage as a NPC competitor and won her class at the 2010 NPC USA, earning her pro status. She’ll look to avenge her loss to Courtney West in the overall title at that contest. She has a nice look at I look for her to be a dark horse in this line up.

Natalie Waples – Natalie suffered an injury which prompted her to compete in the Pro Bikini division. She’ll return to the Figure stage in hopes of being in the top spots. As one of the smaller competitors, she’ll have her work cut out for her. I found her physique more fitting for the bikini division  and could have moved up with improved presentation. We’ll see how she fairs in her return/

Courtney West - Courtney will look to continue her winning ways from her pro debut in Houston. She was very good but will need to be a bit sharper with her conditioning and presentation with this line up to repeat as the champ. I look for her to be in the top three again but to hold off Teresa Anthony and Felicia Romero she’ll need to be at her all time best. Can she do it? Certainly but it will be a test of things to come as doing shows back to back, along with traveling isn’t easy.

Stacy Wig - Unless Stacy stripped a ton of muscle off her frame since the 2010 New York Pro she will be relegated to the dreaded tied for 16th spot. She will likely be the most muscular competitor in the entire line-up and I don’t see it working to her favor.

IFBB Border States Pro Figure Results

The results are in and some unexpected results were read off. I’m not at the event but everyone I spoke to didn’t see Akane in 5th. Felicia Romero has improved her lower body and notched another pro victory under her belt. Despite what the hardbody readers thought in our poll, Kristi Tauti landed in second. Kristi gathered 76% of the votes in our poll this evening with Felicia snagging 24%. Krissy Chin lands in the third and final qualifying spot for the 2010 Olympia. Kristin Nunn improved from last week’s Ft. Lauderdale Pro by finishing fourth. The surprise to those in the audience was rookie pro Akane Nigro-Ismeal landing in the fifth spot. Again, I was not there and can’t speak to how I would have scored it. Judging by photos only tells part of the story that played out on stage. Congratulations to all the women who accomplished their goals at this show.

Akane Nigro-Ismeal Pro Debut

Akane is the talk of the Border States this afternoon in what served as her IFBB Pro debut. We’ll have to wait to find out how she finished but she is definitely in the top six. Many have her in the top three which would qualify her for the 2010 Figure Olympia. Akane is one of the shorter competitors on stage today but she’s standing tall after hearing her name called out in the top group. A tiny waist and incredible calves are help this cutie stand out. She looks to have improved her conditioning from the USAs in July, where she turned pro. Congratulations on an impressive debut!

2009 NPC & IFBB Border States Report

The 2009 Border States is under way. Prejudging is taking place now in San Diego, California. If you’re in the area and interested in tickets for the evening show visit: www.musclecontest.com. Our West Coast correspondent, Ron Avidan is seated in the press pit shooting away for bodybuiding.com. He just reported in saying there are 190 total competitors in the NPC portion of this event. Currently, the NPC prejudging is taking place. The IFBB Figure Pros will take the stage around 12pm California time.

11:50am PST
NPC Judges are being swapped out for the IFBB Pro Judges. IFBB Figure turned Bikini Pro, Zhanna Rotar is in attendance judging the NPC show.

12:05pm PST
The Figure one-piece has started. First call-out..
Kristi Tauti, Felicia Romero, Krissy Chin, Kristin Nunn, Meriza DeGuzman, Carin Hawkins
**April Rountree and Akane Nigro-Ismael added to this group

Ron says it is between Felicia Romero and Kristi Tauti for the win here.

Ron Avidan has the top six in the one-piece round:
1. Felicia Romero
2. Kristi Tauti
3. Krissy Chin
4. Akane Nigro-Ismeal
5. April Rountree
6. Kristin Nunn

Hardbody IFBB Figure Pro and current Muscle & Fitness Hers cover-girl Alicia Harris has it…
1. Kristi Tauti
2. Felicia Romero
3. Akane Nigro-Ismeal
4. Meriza DeGuzman
5. Krissy Chin
6. Kristin Nunn

I spoke to others in attendance and they have Kristi winning with Felicia in second and April or Akane in third. It goes to show that in a subjective competition, everyone has a different view on what should or shouldn’t be rewarded.

12:20PM PST
Round one is over for the pros. They will be back on stage in their two-piece shortly.

12:40PM PST
Ron tells me Ruth Silverman from IRONMAN magazine is in attendance and not only reporting but taking photos. I don’t know whether I am in more shock with Ruth shooting the show or simply being in attendance. Just kidding Ruth. Don’t get you gurdle in a bunch, you know I am only giving you a hard time. Pros will be back out in their two-piece soon.

12:50PM
Two-piece is up now. First Call-out
Felicia Romero, Kristi Tauti, Krissy Chin, Akane Nigro-Ismeal, Kristin Nunn, Karin Hawkins, April Roundtree

1:00PM
Definitely between Kristi Tauti and Felicia Romero for the win. Ron tells me he likes Felicia as does Ruth Silverman for the win. Fellow photographer Bill Comstock is sitting next to him and likes Kristi Tauti for the win. Cover-girl Alicia Harris concurs with Bill and also like Tauti for the win here.

1:10PM
The prejudging has concluded for the IFBB Figure Pro event. The judging went much the same as the one-piece round. It could go a number of ways but here’s how the HARDBODY peeps are the show see it.

Ron Avidan’s Two-piece Picks:
1. Felicia Romero
2. Kristi Tauti
3. Akane Nigro-Ismeal
4. Krissy Chin
5. Kristin Nunn
6. April Rountree

Ron says, “Ruth is the same except she has Meriza DeGuzman in sixth. Chin might be third. All opinion.” Wow, thanks for that earth shattering report Ron. LOL! Yes, of course it is all opinion and we do the predictions and voice opinions for fun. It show how varying opinions of the same show and the same event exist.

M&F hers Covergirl Alicia Harris Two-Piece picks:
1. Kristi Tauti
2. Felicia Romero
3. Akane Nigro-Ismeal
4. Krissy Chin
5. Kristin Nunn
6. Meriza DeGuzman

Check back on this post as we update the action in San Diego throughout the day. We’ll report back with the final results later tonight.
