Unfinished Business for Monique Ricardo

Monique Ricardo, formerly Minton, took the fitness modeling world by storm when she starting competing in the NPC. She’s been on the covers of FLEX and Muscle & Fitness HERS and seen inside a number of other fitness magazines. Monique achieved IFBB Pro status in the Figure division but transitioned into the bikini division. Rewind to a year ago, she was preparing for the inaugural Bikini International but had to withdraw. It was mid-way through her prep that Monique found out she was pregnant with her first child. I caught up with Monique as she prepares to take care of some unfinished business.

Do you still go by Momo?
Sometimes

Momo Ricardo then?
Yes Sir.

How about Momma Momo?
Well, I am a momma now! lol

So take us back…you were accepted and invited to the 2011 Bikini International but you found out you were pregnant – right?
Yes! I was a few weeks into my 2011 Arnold training when I found out I was pregnant!

Congratulations! How old is the little guy?
Baby Maxwell is now five months.

Was there lots of kicking and punching during birth?
Yes! He was upside down my whole pregnancy and kicked my ribs the whole time!

As a new mom what’s been the biggest challenge?
I think the biggest challenge of being a new mom in the beginning is trying to find time to workout or really do anything! A newborn needs a lot of attention!

Momma and Maxwell

Did you workout during your pregnancy?
I did some cardio and rolled in my gi until 6 months, after that I had no stomach muscles to sit up and my hips didn’t move correctly. I lifted weights in the beginning but my doctor told me not to lift so heavy to protect the baby. I couldn’t lift light weight. I guess a mental thing. So I stopped after a few months.

How much weight did you gain?
I gained 20 pounds of total pregnancy. Five pounds of actually weight, after baby, fluids, etc.

What tips would you give moms out there about staying healthy and exercising?
Eat healthy!!! It helps so much with total pregnancy and post pregnancy! Being fit and then becoming pregnant makes your birth experience much easier and faster. I was only in labor for 23 minutes!

Wow that’s crazy. I’m sure a number of women wish they were in labor that long. LOL.

What’s one thing you wished someone would have told you or you knew before giving birth?
I got so much advice from many people about giving birth! A lot of women shared negative experiences, which just scared me! I had such a pleasant experience giving birth and was so surprised how easy and enjoyable it was! I wish someone told me to bring more snacks though. HA! hospital food sounds good on paper but doesn’t taste like they describe it! lol

Is it harder to get the bikini body back or no problems?
I worked super hard after having the baby! I had a Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) tourney 3 months later, so I needed to catch up fast! I was in the gym lifting heavy and on the mat rolling hard! I probably should have slowed it down a bit but sometimes you gotta go big or go home! haha

Are you still practicing MMA – what level are you at in your BJJ?
Yes! its part of my life! I am now a brown belt under Eddie Ricardo

All she does is Win! Win! Win!

What did you think of Brock getting knocked out?
I don’t think he was ready to come back to the fight…the guy guy had 12 inches of intestines taken from his belly and then he goes and fights Overeem who punches him in the stomach!

Are you glad he retired?
You can’t be the champion forever.

Can Overeem beat Junior?
No. Junior is more hungry, younger… in my opinion better on the ground, standup and boxing!

What about Chael Sonen – what’s your take on him?
He is very smart intelligent person who trains and works out really hard, he is talking a lot of crap trying to get a fight with the champion, and that’s the only way with his record that he is going to be able to do it. Some girls would take their clothes off to get attention… Chael Sonnen talks for attention.

Will he be able to beat Munos?
Munos is a better fighter but Chael is stronger mentally… which can win fights!

You trained with the Nogueiras – how hard was it to watch Minotauro get broken by Frank Mir?
I realized that night what a warrior he was! He didn’t even make a face or sound. I admire when a man acts like man and not run to his momma and stays home playing video games!

Monotauro and Monique

Did you see The Warrior that you made an appearance in?
Yes!

What did you think of it?
It was very good! had a great storyline and one of the better MMA movies out there!

People may not know but how long were you there filming?
Almost 3 months!

Are you still with Team MuscleTech?
I am Team MuscleTech! :)

Will you be at their booth during the Arnold?
I will be at there booth!

What’s your favorite product?
They have a new fatburner out called Hydroxystim! It’s awesome. I’m using this product for my Arnold training.

Any issues with taking any supplements and breast feeding?
I didn’t take any supplements while breastfeeding, So it wasn’t an issue for me.

Who is a better model you or your sister?
Well it depends…I have three sisters and they are always competing to see who is gonna sit at the head of the table. haha

Anything else happen while away from the stage?
Not that I can think of. I had a lot of time to enjoy my pregnancy, my family and new baby!

What made you decide to compete again after having a baby?
I have never competed in the Arnold and I have always dreamed of competing there one day! I got the chance and I took it. I love setting goals and competing is fun process, so why not?! I’m also part of Team Bombshell and I appreciate all the help I am getting from them.

Good Luck in Columbus! If you want to keep up with what’s happening with Monique, “Like” her facebook page. Check back as Monique updates us here on Hardbody.com with her Arnold prep.

2012 FLEX Pro Fitness Deadline Nears

The first IFBB Pro show of the year is quickly approaching. Women of the IFBB Pro Fitness division will have a chance to compete at the FLEX Pro held in Santa Monica, California on February 18, 2012. This new (and welcomed) addition to the schedule provides the women with an opportunity to compete in a division that has seen more shows disappear than added as of late. Let’s hope the women support the show or it could be one and done.

While there is no official list out as of yet, the buzz is that we’ll see Tanji Johnson and Adela Garcia face off once again. Will both be on their “A game” or use it as a warm for the Fitness International Battle two weeks later? Look for Camala Rodriquez to throw her name in the mix as well. She’s capable of a top 5 finish and is working under the watchful eye of Mike Davies for her diet now. One of the break out stars in 2011 was Canada’s Jodi Boam. Jodi will make the trip down to sunny California (we hope it’s sunny and not raining like last year) to show off her new routine. She may want to take a cab as she has a history of driving that’s not up to par with her kick ass routines. Fans will also likely see Oksana Grishina in the mix as she currently resides in Los Angeles and has positioned herself as a top contender in the division. Look for Kayde Puckett and Michelle Blank to skip this show and focus on the Arnold.

We’ll know who is competing in about 10-11 days. The IFBB Pro League implemented a new rule in September of last year, which requires all competitors to send in their contracts no later than thirty (30) days prior to competition. If any competitor fails to send their contract in they must pay $200 to the IFBB Pro League in trust for the promoter.

Another new rule is a “no-show at finals”. If a competitor who qualifies for the finals but fails to participate without a legitimate reason and without notifying the Head judge or Promoter before the finals, will be fined $1,000. Until this fine is paid the competitor will be prohibited from competing.

India Paulino victorious in Miami.

This brings the 2011 competitive season to a close. Things will get started once again in just a few weeks with the first women’s pro event beginning in Feb.

IFBB Florida Pro Bikini Results & Review

The IFBB Florida Pro Bikini show marked the end of the 2011 competition season. Promoter, Jarka put on a first class event and offered some of the top prize money of the year. Florida’s own India Paulino was victorious for the second time her in her pro career. The win capped off an impressive end to her season. Check out the competition photos here.

The Hardbody take on the competition…

1. India Paulino - India was many people’s pick to win heading into the show and she proved them right. She has nice skin tone and a nice physique for the division. At times she still appears a little nervous on stage and can make some scrunchy faces while on stage. I’m still not a fan of the nearly hip popping tick-tock pose she does followed by a giddy up kick but it works for her. If other women tried doing this it wouldn’t work. India has positioned herself as one of the top bikini pros in the game today.

2. Tianna Ta - Tianna brought her best look as a pro to the stage and it helped her lock in second place. The struggle with Tianna is that she is often more conditioned on her upper body than she is in her lower body. When she turns around she tends to be soft and not have much of a butt. She nailed her posing this time and I liked the more glamorous hair and presentation. Tianna achieved her goal of qualifying for the Olympia with her finish here. I’d like to see her bring a booty to the 2012 stage.

3. Juliana Daniell - Juliana has one of the more athletic bikini bodies and model potential to go go with it. She’s gone from the middle of the pack last year to a standout this year. She has the potential to be a top contender in every show however I didn’t have her in my top three. Juliana was a little softer at this show than previous shows and I felt her lower abs and booty needed to be a bit tighter. She’ll return to the Olympia stage with her placing here.

4. Jennifer Chapman - Jennifer wasted no time getting into the hunt of the pro ranks and made her presence known. She turned pro just three weeks ago and in her pro debut notched a top five finish. I had Jennifer in the top five and many wouldn’t argue if she was in the top three. She posed with class and did so with ease. Definitely a solid pro debut.

5. Heather Nappi - Heather finished back in the top five matching her pro debut finish from Ft. Lauderdale. I’d like to see her hair pulled away from her neck a bit more and ditch the foam padding in her suit top. She has a good bikini body and has improved since turning pro earlier this year. A top five finish is a great way to finish the year.

6. Yeshaira Robles - Yeshaira was one of my picks heading into the show to crack the top five. She has the looks and the body to do so but will need to work on her lower body a bit more to hang in the pro ranks. That said I like her look and this being just her first pro show, look for her to be in the hunt next year.

7. Brittany Tacy - Brittany has an athletic physique that many women are found of. It’s pretty much a given that most men will be fans of a physique but when women are, then you’re on to something. I would have Brittany higher than 7th and the one thing I think hurt her was her tan. She was a little too light in color and under the bright lights she looked washed out. She has more than held her own since turning pro at USAs this summer.

8. Missy Coles - Missy was another competitor plagued with being a little too light with their tan at this show. Missy’s placings have been all over the board this year and I attribute it to the competition getting tougher as the division evolves.

9. Kim DeArcangelis - This marked Kim’s second pro show and she needed to be a bit tighter in the booty to crack the top five. I’d like to see her rock the stage with a little more confidence as it appeared as if she was over-thinking while hitting her poses.

10. Brittany Gaylord -
This was the best Brittany has looked since returning to the stage. She has an 8 month old baby at home and proved that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. She improved with each show and has a nice bikini physique. I would have placed her a bit higher here and just needed a bit darker tan.

11. Theresa Byrne – This was the first time we’ve seen Theresa on stage since her pro debut, which was over a year ago. She changed up her hair color and I personally like the lighter hair. She has a great physique however it was a little too much muscle and too conditioned for this show. If she’s able to strip some of the muscle away she could move up into a top spot.

12. Figen Oezdemir - Figen calls Germany home and held her own in this, her pro debut. I thought she had the best booty in the entire show and it may have been a little too much booty for the judges’ liking. Her suit bottoms did appear a little too small but overall she had a respectable pro debut.

13. Bernadett Matassa - I would have placed Bernadett a bit higher as I liked the look she brought to the stage. She’s improved her posing and in this show I would have her in the top ten.

13. Yenny Polanco - Yenny definitely has the sass and energy part down. This was the first we’ve seen Yenny compete in the bikini division and she made a few rookie competitor mistakes. Her tanning was a bit off and she had an ash look to her. She also had glitter all over her body at both the prejudging and night show. It was totally distracting as was her anklets. You could tell she was having fun and she could move up if she corrects some of her presentation mistakes.

15. Khanh Nguyen -
I wouldn’t have Khanh at the bottom of the pack on my scorecard. Khanh always has a nice physique on stage and the only thing I noticed was she needed a little more confidence and energy on stage.

After the show concluded, Jarka treated everyone to a top notch meal at the host hotel. This event was well produced and the competitors, special guests, media and judges were treated with first class accommodations. It was definitely a great way to end the competitive season.

2011 IFBB Florida Pro Bikini Preview & Poll

The final IFBB Pro show is just days away and it’s shaping up to be a hotter than the Miami temps. This weekend several IFBB Pro Bikini competitors will share the stage with some of bodybuilding’s biggest legends. Despite the name of the show being “World Masters” don’t be confused – the women are not master’s competitors. The favorite on many people’s predictions (until a weekend ago) was third place Olympia finisher, Dianna Dahlgren. She has since withdrawn from the competition due to illness.

A case could be made for a number of women in this line up to crack the top three. This show is significant because it is the last show where the top three women will be qualified to compete in the 2012 Olympia. Next year a new rule has be adopted where only the first place finisher will be qualified to compete in the Olympia. So who will crack the top three and get a piece of the $20,000 purse? Let’s break it down.

The Hardbody 411:
Theresa Bryne - We haven’t seen Theresa on stage since her pro debut at the 2010 Sacramento Pro. She cleaned house while she was in the NPC ranks with wins at the NPC USA and Emerald Cup. She had a less than stellar finished (9th) in her debut so we’ll have to see what she brings to the stage and if she can improve upon that.

Jennifer Chapman - Props to Jennifer on wasting no time getting into the pro ranks. She’ll be making her pro debut after turning pro just a few weeks ago on the same stage at the NPC Nationals. Jennifer has streamlined her physique and found her groove. She’s coming off the high of turning pro and will look to continue it here. This will be her 7th show of the year and as long as she didn’t fall off the wagon with her diet since turning pro, she’ll be a contender.

Missy Coles - Missy has been up and down in her placings and has gone from second to 16th. She managed to fix the tanning issues she had in the past, which hindered her in some shows. It’s hard to say where she will finish in this line up as she could be in the top callout or in one of the last ones. I’d probably have her in the second call-out in this group.

Juliana Daniell - Juliana found her stride early this year and has risen to one of the more popular bikini pros. She has an athletic physique and when she isn’t over-thinking her posing she’s on the money. I like the package she brings to the stage and if she brings the look she did to Pittsburgh and New York you’ll see her in the top spots.

Kim DeArcangelis - Kim has found success off the stage as a lawyer and will look to bring some of that fierceness to the stage this weekend. She made her pro debut at this year’s Iowa Pro where she finished 8th. It will be tough for her to crack the top five here but never rule anything out. As long as she poses in a relaxed manner she’ll be able to hang in this line up.

Brittany Gaylord - Brittany has continued to improve and refine her physique since making a return to the stage. Brittany competed in the Fitness division (under her maiden name Brittany Thorsch) before taking time off to have a child. She finished 9th at the Sacramento Pro and will look to crack the top 10 again here in hopes of sliding into the top five.

Bernadett Matassa – Bernadett toned down her posing and it helped move up at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup. I’m not sure the short hair works for her but she has a nice physique. We’ll see if she can move up into the top 10 for the first time here.

Heather Nappi - Heather had a strong pro debut with a 5th place finish but then slipped to 10th at the Iowa Pro. This will be her third show as a pro and will look to return to the top callout. She can do it but this is a pretty tough line up. I see her right on the bubble and could potentially be in the top five.

Khanh Nguyen - Khanh is back and she’ll look to crack the top five here. She was one of the first masters competitors awarded in the bikini division and she has a great physique. The issue with Khanh is out of her hands. She comes in consistently in shape and presents herself well. It’s simply that the competition has continued to improve and each show she enters featured stiffer competition than the last. This will be her fifth show of the year. She’s coming off a 13th place finish at the Iowa Pro.

Figen Oezdemir - Figen is a competitor I’m not familiar with other than she calls Germany home. It’s always a crap shoot with competitors competing in the USA for the first time. Many times the competitors do what their countries ask of them however it doesn’t always fit the USA model. We’ll see what she brings to the stage in what I believe is her pro debut.

India Paulino - India is coming off a win at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup. She was at her all-time best, at least in my opinion, when she placed 6th. She’s the one to beat at this show and I look for her to collect another first place check. The only thing that makes me laugh and cringe is the ending of her individual posing. I swear she is going to break a hip if she snaps the “tick-tock” back and forth any harder. She follows it with a lil giddy up kick. It fits her sassy personality though so she’s able to get away with it where most women couldn’t.

Yeshaira Robles – Yeshaira is my dark horse who could shake things up in this show. She won her class and was my pick for the overall at this year’s Team Universe competition. This will be her pro debut and will have one of the best bikini booties in the show. If she can present with poise and confidence look for her to make a name of herself in the pro ranks.

Tianna Ta - Tianna has improved greatly from a year ago. The challenge she has is being lean on the upper body but not tight enough in her lower body, particularly when she turns to the back. She’s found her groove with her posing and now if she can bring a tight booty to the stage she could be in the hunt for a top spot. This will be her 6th show of the year and her highest finish was 4th. She’s coming off a 6th place finish at the Iowa Pro.

Brittany Tacy - Brittany has an athletic physique and a great look for the bikini division. This will be her third pro show since reaching pro status at the NPC USA this summer. She narrowly missed the top 3 at the Titans Grand Prix where she finished 4th. Look for Brittany in the first call-out and posing it out for a top three finish.

Nearly 300 hardbody men and women brought the competitive NPC season to a close over the weekend. Ron Avidan was on hand to capture all the action of the 2011 NPC Excalibur in Culver City, CA. Ali Archer claimed the overall bikini crown in her first show and will be one to watch in 2012.

Nearly 2,000 photos of the 2011 Excalibur can be found on bodybuilding.com.

2012 Arnold Invite Application Process

The 2012 Arnold Sports Festival is quickly approaching and in just a few weeks we’ll know who received invites to the prestigious event. Those of you unfamiliar with the IFBB portion of the weekend it consists of (the ladies at least) the Ms. International, Fitness International, Figure International and Bikini International. There typically 15 women, give or take a couple, selected for each division.

How does the process work?
Anyone who is in good standing with the IFBB Pro League and has paid their annual dues can submit their application to be considered. If an IFBB pro intends on submitting for the Arnold they must first indicate their interest in the event with the IFBB Pro League office. Each pro receives a contest calendar with their IFBB Pro League renewal letter.

Once the Arnold Sports office receives the list of athletes who wish to be selected, they cross check with the IFBB Pro League office. They must match up and if an athlete has not submitted their paperwork with the pro league office it could effect their chances of being selected.

Pros should provide the Arnold Sports Festival with their competition background and any competitive success they have had in their career. Athletes may also wish to mention anything of significance that would help further their case in being selected. The packets that are sent in vary from athlete to athlete and don’t need to be elaborate. Once all the applications are received and confirmed to be in good standing, a selection committee votes to help form the final list.

Athletes can send information to:
Jim Lorimer
Arnold Sports Festival
1215 Worthington Woods Boulevard
Worthington, Ohio 43085

Again all Athletes should indicate their desire to the IFBB Pro League office upon receiving the list of 2012 contests.

Those “chosen ones” are based on a number of criteria, however the competition history and placings are a driving force. Arnold Amateur winners are often invited based on that alone. A selection committee, made up of over a dozen industry experts, vote on the list applicants. Typically those with the best scores make the short list, however it’s not always the case. Mr. Lorimer ultimately has the say in who gets in an invite because, well it’s his show.

There’s one chance left for the women of the IFBB Pro Bikini division to qualify for the the 2012 Olympia (this year) and it takes place on December 10, 2011. Promoter, Jarka has put up huge prize money for this event ($20,000) for Bikini alone. There are currently 12 women signed up to compete in this event but look for a few more to be added this week. Earlier this year records were set at the NPC USA competition when nearly 700 hardbody men and women (691 according to The Swami) hit the stage. That record will easily fall this weekend at the NPC Nationals in South Beach, Florida. When we heard that there would be nearly 900 competitors we were stunned but now we’re floored. 2011 Iowa Pro Bikini Results – Vanessa Campbell Wins

The inaugural Iowa Pro Bikini is in the books and that leaves just one remaining IFBB Pro show left on the calendar. Vanessa Campbell locked in her first win as a pro and in doing so qualified for the 2012 Olympia. Vanessa has steadily improved her physique over the last few months and in doing so positioned herself back at the top of the bikini ranks.

Candyce Graham was my pick for the win heading into the show and she came close with a runner-up finish. No shame in that, especially when it’s Vanessa who places ahead of you (who I had pegged for second heading into the show). Candyce lights up the room when she smiles and poses with ease. She lit it up in Iowa and her second place finish sends her to the 2012 Olympia. Don’t be surprised if you see Candyce on the Bikini International stage next March in Columbus, Ohio. Third place finisher may be no surprise to some while others are a little shocked. It’s not totally out of the question that Nicole finished in the top three as she was fourth at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup and has a look that the judges on the Iowa panel like. Congrats to Nicole on her first trip to the Olympia stage and her highest placing as an IFBB pro.

Cristina Vujnich is someone I had in my top three but she was relegated to fourth. The finish has to be a little bitter sweet for Cristina as only the top three qualify for the Olympia. Another shocking finish to many who follow bikini is Diana Fields in fifth place. Diana was 12th at the Tijuana Pro and earlier this month finished in 8th at the Sacramento Pro. Perhaps enlisting the help of a new trainer was what Diana needed to bring her physique in line with what the judges were looking for. This is her highest finish of the 2011 season.

A few names people expected to see in the top group like Tianna Ta and Jennifer Andrews were left out in the Iowa cold. Ron Avidan has Roya in his top five predictions but she too was left on the outside of the top five looking in. It goes to show you never know how a show can go and the so called “experts” don’t always get it right.

Everyone who commented on this event noted that promoter Jack Titone did a great job of taking care of everyone and the venue was great. It’s always encouraging to hear positive feedback from those in attendance and that a promoter is looking out for the athletes and fans. Props on a successful first pr show in Iowa. The show also had a NPC competition and a Men’s 212 Pro Bodybuilding show which was won by Tricky Jackson.

2011 IFBB Iowa Pro Bikini Preview & Poll

This weekend marks the second to last chance for IFBB Bikini pros to qualify for the the 2012 Olympia, at least this year. Next year IFBB Pros will need to win a show in order to qualify for the big dance but at this show the top three women will be qualified to compete in Las Vegas next Fall. Seventeen women have signed up to compete and while there are no super-star names in the line up, it is a competitive one. This is the first time we’ve seen Pro Bikini in Iowa and promoter Jack Titone tells me it won’t be the last. Let’s break down the competition.

The Hardbody 411:
Only Vanessa Campbell is qualified for the 2012 Olympia in this line up so she’d be the logical winner, right? Not so fast. Here’s the skinny on this weekend’s competitors. Vote for who you think will win below.

1. Jennifer Andrews – Jennifer has been up and down in her placings since turning pro. She was just inside the top 10 at the Bikini International and won the St. Louis Pro in March. She slipped 12th at the Dallas Supershow and then the dreaded tied for 16th at the Olympia. Where will we see Jennifer finish at this show? She has the potential to be in the top five but will need to come in on her A game to return to the Olympia stage.

2. Vanessa Campbell – Vanessa has found her stride and continues to improve at the end of this season. She’s coming off a second place finish at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup and the pressure is off to return to the Olympia stage. She switched up her bikini suit and has been on point with her physique and presentation. I look for her to be in the hunt for her first pro win.

3. Kim DeArcangelis – This will be Kim’s pro debut and if she brings a tight backside she could fair well. It won’t be easy to crack the top spots but she found a winning combo at the Masters Nationals to achieve pro status. We’ll see how she stacks up in the big league.

4. Jennifer Dietrick – One thing you can give Jennifer props for is she’s persistent. She’s looking to improve on her 14th place finish at the Titans Grand Prix a few weeks ago and should move up here. She has a solid booty and if it was simply a booty contest she’d be in the top spots every time. Unfortunately, it’s not and she’ll have her work cut out for her to crack the top five.

5. Diana Fields – Diana has enlisted the help of bodybuilding guru Hany Rambod for her training. She was one of the first women to turn pro and her physique is playing catch up in terms of size and proportion. She’s improving and at the end of the day if you’re improving that’s the real name of the game.

6. Trina Goosby – Trina will look to crack the top five for the first time in her pro career. She’s coming off a 9th place finish at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup and will need to be a bit tighter with her conditioning than she was there if she wants to be in the hunt.

7. Candyce Graham – Candyce has a sic physique. If she doesn’t “angry pose” she’ll be in the mix. I’ve seen her pose where she over exaggerates her poses and sometimes has a scowl. If she smiles, chillaxes and presents in a calm, controlled manner she’ll have a chance at the top three.

8. Christie Marquez – Christie had her best showing at the Tijuana Pro a few weeks ago where she finished in 4th. She was 10th at the Titans Grand Prix and if she can land in the top ten here it will be a successful showing for her.

9. Christy Merritt - Christy landed on the fast track to success in 2010 going from a local show, to winning the JR USAs, qualifying for the Olympia and competing at the big show. Christy has yet to crack the top five this year and she’ll look to do so here. Many times it depends on who Christy is on stage with as to how she compares. This show she should be in the top two call-outs.

10. Nicole Moneer-Guerrero – Nicole got a whole lotta love at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup where she placed fourth. She slipped to sixth at the Houston Pro and I see her finishing somewhere in that spot again here. She’s a top 10 contender but needs a bit more booty to hang in the top spots at least in my opinion.

11. Heather Nappi – Heather finished in fifth at her pro debut. She has a nice physique and look to land her in the top cal-lout. I’m not a fan of the legs spread wide pose and when she does this I think it detracts from her backside. Heather should be in the mix at this show.

12. Khahn Nguyen – Khahn is a a rockstar. Despite missing out on the top spots she continues to come back and do her best. If shows were judged on comedic ability, she’d be the winner every time because she’s hilarious. Unfortunately, it’s a physique competition and while she has a great physique it’s not one that the judges seem to favor in the division. What can she do to improve? Not much except continue to bring her best. It’s a testament of how competitive pro shows can be. She has turned competing into some modeling work so there is a silver lining to competing and not winning.

13. Tianna Ta - Tianna has been in the top five her last three shows however an Olympia qualification has avoided her. She did make it to the 2010 Olympia with her 4th place finish at the Pittsburgh Pro. Can she make it into the top three? She can but it won’t be a walk in the park. She’s improved her stage presence and become much more relaxed on stage which was needed. She used to shake on stage and that’s long gone. If she has a tight booty and brings confidence to the stage, she can be top three. IF she let’s nerves get the best of her and isn’t tight from the back side, no O for her.

14. Roya Tehrani – Roya won the 2011 Team Universe and jumped into the pro competition right away. She finished 5th at the Phoenix Pro and dropped to 8th at the Houston Pro. Roya has to come in tighter in her lower body and change up her posing if she hopes to make it into the top three. When she poses with her legs spread wide and apart it’s not flattering and makes her hips look bigger.

15. Michelle Trasey-Hutton - The twins are back again. Michelle finished in a respectable 7th place at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup, her pro debut. She tends to pose with borderline over the top enthusiasm. Many times you will see the “hair whip” where she flips her hair with a snap of the neck. I’m not a fan of it but she definitely has fun with it. One thing you can count on is she’ll be smiling from ear to ear.

16. Kristie Trasey-Winter - Kristie tied with her twin sister for 7th at her pro debut and I guess that speaks to her physique as it compares to her sister. I give her the nod over her sister based on her presentation and I think she has a bit more balance physique. The sisters will battle it out once again this weekend.

17. Cristina Vujnich - Cristina has a nice physique and one of the few women who can rock the short hair and look sexy. The only issue that I go back to with Cristina is she tries too hard to be sexy sometimes on stage. The myspace face and sometimes goofy facial expressions can be distracting. If she smiles, presents with confidence and rocks it sans goofy face she’ll be in the hunt for the top three. She finished in second at the Phoenix Pro and will becoming off a 15th place finish at the Olympia. I hated her Phoenix suit but loved her Olympia one.

Isaac’s Predictions:
1. Candyce Graham
2. Vanessa Campbell
3. Cristina Vujnich
4. Tiana Ta
5. Heather Nappi

Ron’s Predictions:
1. Cristina Vunjnich
2. Vanessa Campbell
3. Tiana Ta
4. Roya Therani
5. Candyce Graham

Latona Wins in Sacramento – Complete Review & Results

Amanda Latona was coming off a win at the Titans Grand Prix and the defending Sacramento Pro Bikini Champion. The Champ not only successfully defended her title but did so in unanimous fashion notching her fifth pro victory in her IFBB career.

The 2011 Sacarmento Pro Bikini took place on November 5th with a field of 11 women. As most expected, Amanda Latona retained her crown and showed that posing with class is where it’s at. The surprise to many was Tawna Eubanks in the runner-up position. I’m stoked to see her finish in second as I’ve always felt she had a “bikini body”. There’s no confusion of her having too much muscle or too little. She has a nice balance of tone and muscle which, in my opinion, makes her a perfect balance for the division. I had her in fifth in my predictions but I’m happy to be wrong. This was Tawna’s second pro show and qualifies her for the Olympia. The final qualifying spot went to Natalie Pennington, which was not a surprise to many. Natalie always fairs well at this contest. It was shock to many that she wasn’t second. Natalie narrowly took third to Tawna by one point. Talia Terese found her way into the top five for the first time as a pro. She’s a stunning woman who has a bright future in whatever path she chooses, on or off the stage. Rounding out the top five was Tiffany Bodyston. Tiffany looks like she’s 1/2 the size of Latona when the two stand next to each other. It’s a testament of how varied the physiques in the bikini division are. Tiffany had already qualified for the Olympia in her previous outing. This also serves as a reminder that you never know who will place ahead of who as Tiffany had beat Talia in their last show.

2011 IFBB Sacramento Pro Bikini Results:

1. Amanda Latona* (3)
2. Tawna Eubanks* (7)
3. Natalie Pennington* (8)
4. Talia Terese (12)
5. Tiffany Marie Boydston (16)
6. Narmin Assria (18)

2011 IFBB Kentucky Muscle Pro Figure Results

The final IFBB Figure competition of 2011 is in the books and top three women are now qualified for next year’s Olympia. This marked the last competition where the top three finishers are qualified for the Figure Olympia. Starting in 2012, only the winners will be qualified.

Gennifer Strobo was the odds on favorite heading into the show and from the judges’ score cards it looks like there was no question in their minds. Strobo won in unanimous fashion. Chelsey Morganstern bounced back from her previous two figure competitions and finished in the same spot she did at this show one year ago, second. Rounding out the top three was Trinidad’s Candice John. Candice is a testament of persistence paying off. She’s progressed with each show, streamlined her physique and refined her look. Now she’ll be back in Vegas for the Olympia next Fall. The surprise, at least from my perspective, was Tracey MacDonald who finished in fourth. At the 2011 Houston Pro, Tracey finished in 9th place. This marks her first finish in the top five as a pro. Chikondi Mseka was show some much deserved love in her fifth place finish. I think Chikondi has a great physique and it’s nice to see her in the top five.

Candice Lewis and Kristen Nagrani were two women I felt had a chance at cracking the top three heading into this show but were on the outside of the top five. Candice was three points behind Chikondi and Kristen was a distant 6 points behind.

Congratulations to all the hardbody women who stepped on stage. Many of these women will now enjoy a nice off-season.

2011 IFBB Kentucky Pro Figure Preview, Poll & Predictions

The 2011 IFBB Kentucky Muscle Pro marks the last chance for the women of the figure division to qualify for the 2012 Olympia, at least for this season. Starting in 2012 only the winners of the show will be qualified for the Olympia so this is the last chance to go top three and head to Vegas. The line up for this show ended up being pretty deep and 21 competitors are slated to compete. The only competitor qualified in the field is Gen Strobo who qualified with her second place finish at the 2011 Ft. Lauderdale Cup. Cheryl Brown will not be defending her title so a new Kentucky Champion will be crown on Saturday, November 5th.

The Hardbody Breakdown:
The favorite heading into this show has to be Gennifer Strobo given that she’s the only one qualified and has won pro shows in the past. That said, Gen is not unbeatable. If she doesn’t come in full she’ll look like a string bean on stage and will battling for a top five. I don’t see her outside of the top three but she’s not a lock for the win here.

Candice Lewis is a competitor who I think has the shape and structure combined with stunning good looks to be a leading lady in the Figure division. I have her in my top call-out and in the top three. We’ll see if the judges agree but judging by the response from fans on facebook and twitter they definitely like her look for the division as well.

Candice John has streamlined her physique and it landed her on the Olympia stage. Look for her to be in the hunt for a top spot in this show and battling for a return trip to the Olympia.

Chelsey Morganstern got a whole lotta love at this show last year when she ended up in second. This year she hasn’t faired as well. She’s a pretty woman but we’ll have to see if it was beginners luck or if this crew of judges are fond of her look again.

Charmayne Jackson was just outside the top five earlier this year at the Europa Super show. She could be a top five contender here.

Chikondi Mseka is a competitor who I had much higher on my score card than where she finished at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup. She’s the 2011 JR USA Champ and in her pro debut (Ft. Lauderdale Cup) placed 10th.

Kristen Nagrani positioned herself as a contender this year and made her way to the Olympia. She’ll look to repeat and head back to the big dance. She could be in the mix here.

2011 IFBB Sacramento Pro Preview, Predictions & Poll

Only three IFBB Pro Bikini competitions remain on the 2011 calendar and this weekend one will go down in Sacramento, California. Eleven hardbody bikini women will take the stage in hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Olympia. The top three will go to the big dance in Las Vegas. The defending champ, Amanda Latona will look to make it two wins in a row and hold onto her title. Tiffany Marie Boydston qualified for the Olympia with a third place finish at the Titans Grand Prix. The Vegas duo are the only ones qualified in the line up.

The Hardbody Breakdown:
1. Narmin Assria – Narmin made her pro debut at the Titans Grand Prix and held her own with another top five finish. She’ll obviously be gunning for a top three finish here. Can she do it? Yep but it won’t be easy in this line up. I have her my top five fighting for a top three spot.

2. Sandra Augustin turned pro in Fitness and will be competing in bikini. I can only assume that she’s doing this show since she lives in Sacramento. Always an energetic and lively women, Sandra will have her hands full cracking the top five here but bet on her having fun in the process.

3. Tiffany Marie Boydston - Tiffany’s birthday wish came true when she qualified for the Olympia on her birthday a couple weeks back at the Titans Grand Prix. I look for her to be in the top five but can she return to the top three? This will be a more competitive line up than she faced in Culver City so we’ll have to see.

4. Mary Jo Cooke-Elliott - Mary Jo battled back from an illness and finished in 11th at this year’s MuscleContest. She’ll look to move up now that she has the swing of things in the bikini division since making the switch from Figure.

5. Tawna Eubanks - I like the look that Tawna brings to the stage and think she has a great BIKINI body. She made her pro debut at the Houston Pro where she finished fourth. I had her in my top three and disappointed that she didn’t get the nod I thought she deserved. She’ll face some tougher competition and a different set of judges here so we’ll see how she fairs.

6. Diana Fields made her return to the competitive scene at the Tijuana Pro and finished at the bottom of the pack. She’ll make a run at it again here and will see how she fairs. You never know with a different set of eyes on you where someone like Diana may end up.

7. Brittany Gaylord returned to the stage at the Titans Grand Prix and many were left wondering WHO DAT? Those of you who have been around awhile and in the industry will remember her as Brittany Thorsch, the fitness pro. Brittany turned pro at the 2005 NPC USAs. She’s since married and had a baby. Now that she is back in the swing of things look for her to bring a better presentation and physique than she did in Culver City.

8. Many Henderson made the switch from Figure and still carries a good deal of muscle. She’s one of the shorties in the IFBB Pro league and it’s a balancing act for the shorter competitors. If you come in too soft it can look like you’re out of shape but come in too lean and you risk looking jacked. She wasn’t at the bottom of the pack but some where in the middle of the Titans Grand Prix. I look for her to be in a similar spot here.

9. Amanda Latona is obviously the one to beat. She took some time off but you wouldn’t know it when she took the stage at the Titans Grand Prix. Amanda picked up where she left off and left win another pro victory. She’s shown she is beatable however I don’t see it happening here unless she decided to hit the local fro-yo shops since her last competition. She’s the returning champ and I look for her to hold onto her title once again.

10. Natalie Pennington was in the top three at this show last year and don’t be surprised if she does once again. She presents a look the the judges favor and I look for this show to be much the same. I don’t mind her look from the front however when she turns to the back I’m left wondering where her booty is at. In the comparison rounds don’t be surprised if she standing next to Amanda Latona and when they turn to the back take not of the booty difference.

11. Talia Terese is looking to find her groove in the pro ranks since winning the NPC USAs in July. She improved to 6th place at the Titans Grand Prix and is a stunning woman. She’ll look to get in the hunt of things here and back to a top contender status. If she brings the look, confidence and presentation she did to USAs she can be a threat. If she doesn’t she’ll be in the middle of this pack.

2011 IFBB Border State Pro Figure Results

The 2011 IFBB Border States Pro Figure is a wrap and Teresa Anthony proved to be victorious once again. This was Teresa’s second pro win in a row and the third in her IFBB career. Her first pro victory came at this show last year. Coming in second was Krissy Chin who narrowly missed an Olympia qualifying spot at the Houston Pro. Krissy avenged her 4th place finish from that show and is now qualified for the 2012 Figure Olympia. Jamie DeBenard came in third once again, a spot she held at the Houston Pro just a couple weeks ago.

Natalie Waples bounced back from 16th in Houston to a top five spot here. She finished in the fourth place spot and just narrowly missing out on an Olympia qualification. Crystal Chiles is one I mentioned who could be a contender at this show and she proved me right. Crystal finished in the fifth place position, the highest of her IFBB Pro career. Candice Lewis tied with Crystal for fifth and if she heads into Kentucky next week, I still think she’s a top three contender.

Since Teresa and Jami were already qualified for the Olympia, there’s only one additional Olympia qualifier from this show and that’s Krissy. Next year only the winner of the show will be qualified for the big dance. The next IFBB Pro Figure show takes place in Louisville, Kentucky on November 5th and will be the last chance for a top three qualification.

2011 IFBB Border States Pro Figure Preview

This weekend 17 IFBB Figure pros will head to San Diego, California for the Border States competition. Promoter Jon Lindsay always does a great job with his pro shows that are held in conjunction with a National Qualifying NPC event. Our West Coast correspondent Ron “Yogi” Avidan will be in attendance and keeping us updated on the action. Things get started at the Scottish Rite Event Center at 11am with the prejudging and the finals will begin at 6:30pm.

The Hardbody Breakdown:
This is one of the last IFBB Figure competitions where the top three women will qualify for the 2012 Olympia. Teresa Anthony and Jami DeBenard are already qualified so we could potentially see one additional woman qualify in this line up.

Leading Contenders:
Teresa Anthony has found her groove and don’t look for her to slow down here. She’s coming off a win at the Houston Pro where she narrowly defeated Jelena Abbou. Look for her to be in the top call-out and compared for her third pro victory and second win in a row. She’s also the defending champion and looking to retain her title.

Krissy Chin came close to qualifying at the Houston Pro and many felt she was at her all-time best, or close to it. She should be in the hunt once again but cracking the top three won’t be a walk in the park. Look for her to be in the top five but where is the question.

Jami DeBenard has been on a roll since turning pro at the 2011 NPC USA. She’s already qualified for the 2012 Figure Olympia with her third place finish at the Houston Pro so the pressure is off her to land in the top three. She’ll of course be gunning for her first pro win. The judges like what she’s bringing to the stage and look for her to be in the top call-out once again.

Candice Lewis made her pro debut at the 2011 Ft. Lauderdale Cup and showed tons of potential. She was the overall winner at this year’s Jr. Nationals and has the genetics to be a contender in the pro division. Her lower body needed to be a little tighter, specifically her quads to match her upper body at her debut. If she comes in tiny bit tighter in the lower body, don’t be surprised if you see her in the top three.

Potential Contenders:
Jaime Cash may not be a name that you are familiar with however Jaime Meade might be. We interviewed her back in 2008 before she turned pro, if you missed it check it out here. She’s since left her goats behind, been remarried and ready to hit the pro stage again. She was 14th at the 2010 Phoenix Pro, her IFBB debut. She has the genetics to do well but we’ll have to see how the time away from the stage has served her.

Crystal Chiles was 6th at this show last year and if she comes in a bit tighter from behind she could be in the hunt here. I look for her to be in the first or second call-out and the potential to be in the hunt for a qualification if she’s on the money.

Meriza DeGuzman-Ciccone is shown on the poster as a co-emcee so she might be joining her husband Pete at the microphone after she ditches her posing suit at the finals. Meriza has been up and down in the Figure division and has yet to crack the top five in her last few shows. She’s one of the shorter competitors will could work against her in this line up. At times she comes in too hard and it hurts her. That’s the tricky part of being a shorty. If you come in too soft it can often make you look out of condition to the taller women, come in too lean and you look jacked. We’ll see what she brings this time around.

Allison Frahn continues to get favorable call-outs however I gotta say I don’t see it. It’s nothing personal however when you see striations in a figure competitor’s glutes I don’t think that should be rewarded. She was fifth at the Houston Pro but you’ll see a different set of judges at this show. We’ll see where she fares but don’t be shocked if she is in the first call-out or two.

Natalie Waples was left out of the call-outs in Houston when she should have been in the top ten. Unfortunately for her she has a 16th place finish on her resume at no fault of her own. She should finish in the top 10 here and could potentially be in the hunt for the top five. She’ll have her work cut out for her to get into that top three and return to the Olympia but never say never.

Competitor of Note:
Rosalind Vanterpool has a sic physique however it’s often “too muscular” for Figure. She’ll likely be told the same thing here unless she’s stripped some muscle off. She’s someone who I think could come in how she has at previous shows and do well in the upcoming IFBB Women’s Physique division.

We’ll see how things turn out on Saturday October 29, 2011. For more information and tickets visit MuscleContest.com.

2011 Titans Grand Prix Pro Bikini Results – Amanda Latona Wins

Congratulations to Amanda Latona on her fourth pro victory. Amanda had taken a few months away from the competitive stage but she picked up right where she left off. She beat out a competitive line up on Saturday to notch her 4th win as an IFBB Pro. She’ll look for win number five in a couple weeks at the Sacramento Pro.

Abbie Burrows finished in second and has proven she’s a top contender in the bikini division. Tiffany Boydston may have been the surprise to a few by finishing in third. She came close earlier in the year with a fifth place finish at the Tijuana Pro but locked in an Olympia qualification here. This was an especially special moment for her not only qualifying for the Olympia but it was also her birthday (hence the cake shown above). Rounding out the top five was Brittany Tacy who continues to inch her way up in the rankings since turn pro at the 2011 NPC USAs. In her pro debut, Narmin Assria finished in fifth. There are only a few remaining shows to go where the top three qualify for the Olympia. Starting in 2012 only the winners of each show will be Olympia Bound.

Congratulations to all the women who competed and met their goals.

NPC Texas State & IFBB Houston Pro Preview

Over 200 hardbody men and women will take the competition stage this weekend in Houston, Texas. The 2011 NPC Texas State will be held in conjunction with the IFBB Houston Pro. This is a special weekend for a new competition in the IFBB… IFBB Wheelchair Bodybuilding. This event alone is worth the price of admission. The men competing in this event are an inspiration and a reminder that we should never have an excuse for staying fit. The newly crowned Mr. Olympia, Phil Heath will be guest posing at the finals. Visit thompsonmusclecontest.com for tickets and additional information.

The HARDBODY 411:

IFBB FIGURE:
The IFBB Figure competition has 24 women registered to compete and it will be a competitive show. This is one of the few remaining shows where the top three finishers will qualify for the 2012 Olympia. Next year only the winner qualifies for the event.

The Figure Contenders:
Jelena Abbou continues to streamline her physique for the Figure division. Look for her to bring her tightest, smallest physique to date. If her booty is down in size, which I think it will, look for her to be in the mix. She’s a top model and looks to be a top competitor.

Teresa Anthony is the one to beat in my book. Teresa has worked her booty off, literally, and become one of the top physiques in the Figure division. I like the look she’s brought her last two shows and if she does it here I see her as your winner. Teresa has one win under her suit and looking to make it win number two.

Krissy Chin has improved her physique over the years and should be a contender here. Look for her to be in the hunt for a top three finish.

Alea Suarez successfully made the switch from bikini to figure and found herself in the 2011 Olympia. She’ll look to make a return trip and has a chance to do so at this show. I like how Alea has polished her presentation, become more relaxed on stage and continues to refine her physique.

Natalie Waples was an Olympia participant and will look to do so again. She’s up and down in her placings and could be in the top spots or on the outside looking in. We’ll have to wait and see how she compares to the other women.

I really like the look of Ginette Delhaes and would like to see her in the mix a bit more. She’s been bringing a better look with each show but always seems to be on the outside of the top spots. We’ll see where she fairs this weekend.

A number of fitness competitors have entered the show and I think it’s a smart move, why not try to qualify if you’re already in shape? Props to them for showing up and helping make this a good show. Agree with the top picks or will someone else be in the hunt for a top three spot not mentioned?

IFBB PRO BIKINI:
There are only a disappointing nine women entered for this event. Which means 1/3 of the field will qualify for the Olympia. It’s a fairly stupid move, in my opinion, for more women not to be at this event. Next year only the winners qualify for the Olympia and there’s only a handful of shows left where the top three qualify. Props to the women who were smart enough to enter this event.

The Bikini Contenders:

Barbara Bolotte is a hottie with a body that is contender in every show she enters. I look for her to be in the top callout and compared for a top spot. She competed in the Olympia and will look to make her way back again next year.

Tawna Eubanks will be making her pro debut in her home state of Texas. She’s continued to improve her physique and if she has the muscle to compare with the pros look for her to be in contention.

Roya Tehrani will look to improve from her pro debut and I see her being in the top three at this show if she does. She turned pro by winning the overall title at this year’s Team Universe.

Christina Vargas has one of the craziest work schedules and if she can find time to rest her body and come in poised with her presentation look for her to be in the hunt. She finished in the top three at the Phoenix Pro and will look to do so again here.

Potentials:
Gabriela Cardosa won her class at the 2011 Arnold Amateur and calls Brazil home. She’ll be one of the taller competitors on stage and will tower above most of the women here. It will be her pro debut and we’ll see how she stacks up. She could be the surprise of the show.

Skye Taylor made her pro debut last weekend in Florida and will try her hand at round two. I like her overall look and she could be in the mix here.

Nicole Moneer-Guerrero has fun on stage and had her best finish in her pro career last week with a fourth place finish. She looked good however I wouldn’t have her in the top five on my scorecard. We’ll see where she finishes here with a different set of judges. Of course she’s looking to move up one spot to head to the Olympia.

Janet Harding has been more selective in her shows this year and with the added rest her body could be better than ever. Janet’s come a long way since her early shows but will have her work cut out for her at this show.

Nicole Coleman has shed a ton of muscle and really brought her physique down since her figure days. The biggest thing for her will be her presentation. She has a tendency to “angry pose” where she over does each move. If she can relax and pose with a little more poise she’ll move up.
