2011 Europa Battle of Champions Figure Results

It was a nail biter at the 2011 Europa Show of Champions Figure competition last weekend in Hartford, Connecticut. Gen Strobo notched another pro win to her credit beating out a competitive group of up and comers. Strobo has a fast metabolism and many times comes in too stringy. She found the winning formula this time as she came in round and full. Jelena Abbou was at her all time best and had her sights set on returning to the Olympia stage. She managed to do that and narrowly missed her first pro win by one point. We might see Jelena on stage again before the Olympia rolls around.

While Strobo and Abbou battled it out for first and second a similar battle took place for the third and final Olympia qualification. Holly Beck edged out rookie Chikondi Mseka by one point to take home third. Chikondi made her pro debut here and showed that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Gina Trochiano rounded out the top five in the field of seventeen IFBB Figure Pros.

Diana Graham Wins IFBB Tampa PBW Championships in her Pro Debut

Diana Graham continued her winning ways Saturday night in Tampa, Florida. Dianna Graham edged out France’s Nathalie Mur by one point for her the win. Just a week ago Diana achieved IFBB Pro status at the NPC Jr. Nationals. Quite the accomplishment to go into your pro debut and take top honors. Last year Ali Rosen and Nicole Nagrani did that and have gone on to be top pros.

Nathalie was previously qualified for the Olympia by placing third at the 2010 Ft. Lauderdale Cup. Third place went to Candyce Graham who was also making her pro debut. Candyce achieved pro status at the 2011 NPC Jr. USA earlier this year. She nabbed the final qualifying spot by one point over Tianna Ta. Tianna was at her all time best and many felt she would leave with an Olympia qualification here.

Dianna was the clear winner in my eyes as she was poised, confident and her physique was on point. It was her best showing and she’ll continue to make an impact in any pro show she enters. Second on my score card would have gone to Tianna Ta with third being Candyce Graham. Tianna was at her best and balanced her upper and lower body from New York. Candyce wasn’t quite as sharp as she was in Charleston but still looked great. She seemed a little nervous in prejudging but more relaxed at the evening show. Nathalie Mur is an attractive woman and can hang with any woman from the front. I thought she needed to be a little tighter in the booty for a near win here. The judges didn’t see it that way and she missed the top spot by one point.

India Paulino was one point away from fourth and two away from third. She was a little off a prejudging with her energy and presentation but rocked it at the night show. This was her pro debut and I look for her to be in the mix at a future show and head to the Olympia before the year’s over. Kristy Robbins looked classy and was the lone blonde in the field of 12. She finished in the sixth place position and she’s finding her groove in the division. There was a three way tie for 7th place between Kira Rivera, Angela Leong and Trina Goosby. I like Angela’s look and would have had her in the mix for top 5.

The judges had the women stand facing the year and not move, pose, wiggle or look over their shoulders. The women all stood with their legs apart and personally I didn’t care for it. I know the judges did it in order to try and better judge the physiques however part of the bikini division is posing and personality. When the women stand in like they did it wasn’t flattering in my opinion. I also think some of the women are taking the posing a bit over the top with the flinging of their hair. It’s just a personal taste but I like when the women pull their hair off their back instead of whipping it away. Also Ali Rosen did a little hip tick-tock at the end of her posing and most of the women here were doing a similar thing. I guess to each their own but I’d like to see the women find the style of posing that works for them instead of all doing the same thing as it feels choreographed and forced many times.

Tim Gardner and his staff did a great job of taking care of the athletes and put the show on at a first class event center. I’d like to see more women enter this show and support a promoter like Tim who goes the extra mile to take care of the competitors. Twelve is a fair sized show but there’s no reason we shouldn’t see 20 or more women in a Florida Pro show.

Check out photos from the show on Bodybuilding.com.

Courtney Prather & Scott Dorn Take Top Honors in Boise

Hundreds applied but in the end only one female and one male could be awarded The 2011 Bodybuilding.com FIT BODY title. The top finalists competed live in Boise over the weekend and were judged by a celebrity panel consisting of Terry Crews, Jimmy Pena and Chady Dunmore. Mario Lopez kicked the evening off as the host of the event and then turned the mic over to Jamie Eason and Mike O’Hearn to interview the finalists.

The judges awarded the top prize based on the contestants overall appearance, stage presence and marketability. Scott had the most shredded of all the physiques and I thought he posed in a bit of a cheesy fashion but in the end the judges favored his look. Courtney Prather continues to make her presence known in the fitness industry. She was a top finalist earlier in the year at the FLEX Bikini Model Search held in conjunction with the FLEX PRO. She’ll also appear in the next issue of Muscle & Fitness HERS magazine. Courtney was poised on stage and was at ease when interviewed on stage. She has a cute look and continues to be a top contender in the the NPC Bikini division.

There were a number of finalists who had a great look and did a tremendous job when being put on the spot at the Knitting Factory, where the competition was held. At the end of the event the winners posed with the judges and other industry celebs. Bodybuilding.com put on another tremendous event in their home base of Boise, Idaho. Congrats to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of this event.

2011 New York Pro Bikini Results

Ali Rosen notched another pro victory to her competitive resume. She bested a competitive field in New York on Saturday. Rosen had been off the mark in her earlier shows but found the winning formula in the Big Apple. Abbie Burrows rebounded from her Louisiana showing last week by taking second. Missy Coles sealed the third and final Olympia qualification. She was also at her best of the year coming in tighter than she had in her previous shows. Missing out on the top three but still making her presence known was Juliana Daniell from Atlanta.

Cheryl Brown completed her trifecta in the Tribecca tonight at the New York Pro. She completed a string of shows winning Orlando, Pittsburgh and New York. As expected after prejudging, Heather Dees took second to Cheryl again. Still a strong showing for her first two shows as a pro. In a somewhat surprising finish, Larissa Reis took the third and final Olympia qualification. It looked as if she’d be out of the top spots in prejudging. The results left a few people scratching their heads as some competitors were much higher than previous shows and others were much lower. Again we weren’t there to know for certain. Cheryl Brown edged out Candice Keen by one point en route to her first win of the year. Cheryl was near her all-time best and despite having a case of the shakes she came out victorious. Candice Keene looked her best and no one would have argued with her winning the show. If she looks like this every time she competes, she’ll be a threat for a top spot every time. IFBB Europa Orlando – Full Bikini Results

Nathalia Melo successfully defended her Bikini crown Saturday afternoon in Orlando. Melo made her pro debut last year at this show and has skyrocketed to the top of the bikini division over the last year.

She’s had a couple bumps in the road and it looked like she may have hit one here but her stage presence and sexy appeal prevailed once again. Nathalia edged out Jaime Baird by three points en route to her second Europa Show of Champions title. Baird was at her all-time best and had she got the win I don’t think many would have disagreed. Vanessa Campbell edged out a much improved Dayna Maletone for the the third and final qualifying Olympia spot. If Maletone had a little better stage presence during prejudging she would have gotten the nod. Look for her to be in the Olympia before the year is out.

IFBB FIBO Power Pro Fitness Results: Regiane Reigns

Regiane Da Silva took home gold at the 2011 FIBO Pro Pro Fitness event held in Essen, Germany. Her high flying routine is always full of crazy strength moves and this time was no different. She upset Camala Rodriquez, the favorite heading into the show and last weekend’s New York Pro Fitness champion. Rodriquez was relegated to third. Diana Monteiro made an impression on the judges by locking up second place in her pro debut. She was crowned the Arnold Amateur overall fitness winner last month.

A very impressive showing for the Brazilian fitness champion. That puts two rookies in the Olympia, both qualifying in their pro debuts. Last weekend, Michelle Blank locked up an Olympia birth at the New York Pro.

2011 IFBBMuscle Contest Pro Bikini Results & Review

Amanda Latona kept the birthday celebration going with another win. She locked in an unanimous victory at the 2011 Muscle Contest Pro Bikini on Saturday night. This marks the third victory for stunning Vegas star and positions her amongst the division’s elite. Last year, Amanda was crowned the Europa Super show and Sacramento Pro champion.

Continuing her rise in the ranks, Dina Al-Sabah landed in the runner-up position. Dina was fourth a week earlier at the St. Louis Pro and the second place finish at this event marks her best placing as a Bikini Pro. Rookie Pro Abbie Burrows made an impressive debut by securing the third and final Olympia qualification. Burrows turned pro at last year’s NPC Nationals and showed that she’s a contender in the division.

THE HARDBODY BREAKDOWN:

1. Amanda Latona – Amanda switched up her suit and rocked the red. It’s a nice color on her and this was the smallest we’ve seen her booty. Her body appeared to be the most balanced it’s been with her legs not over powering her upper body. If she brings this same look to the Olympia, she will be a contender for the Olympia crown.

2. Dina Al-Sabah - Dina’s physique also looked more in balance than it has. Her legs looked slightly smaller than in the past and it was probably her best look to date. She changed her posing up slightly and it was more flattering to her physique. This is her third show this month so look for her to take a break until the Olympia. Dina’s finish serves as a reminder to other competitors that sometimes making a run at multiple shows can pay off. Tweaking and refining things works versus calling it quits for months between shows.

3. Abbie Burrows - Burrows put the rookie jitters aside and made an immediate impact on the pro ranks. The blue looks good on her but I’d like to see her suit fit her a little better. Her poses were flattering to her physique and displayed a look of a bikini model. I like when competitors present themselves with poses such as the ones Abbie displayed. It’s a feminine look and one that more women should do. Impressive debut and look for her to continue to be a top threat in any show she enters.

4. Zhanna Rotar - Zhanna tied with Anca for fourth but won the tie breaker. I liked her suit, it was classy and fit well. Nothing personal towards her but I wouldn’t have her this high in the placings. I feel Zhanna carries too much muscle and in my opinion shouldn’t be rewarded for it. I’d like to see her shed more of the muscle she built from her figure days in order to be a top five finisher. She definitely improved from last year though.

5. Anca Marcus - I liked the color and cut of Anca suit. I would have placed her in front of Zhanna as her physique is less muscular. I’m not crazy about bikini competitors posing with their legs spread wide from the front or back. It’s not a flattering look and one I feel should be avoided. I think the wide stance in her presentation may have cost her the tie breaker. She’s been to the Olympia before and we’ll have to see if she makes it back this year.

6. Christina Vargas - Definitely Christina’s best showing today and her body was in line with the division versus her struggle whether to go figure or bikini. Her model poses were curvy and flattering to her physique. I would have placed her in the top five. If she brings this same physique to her next show you might find her there.

7. Leigh Brandt – The Canadian Cutie found herself in the middle of the pack once again. Leigh has the potential to be in a top spot. If she can bring her physique in a bit tighter, you’ll see her move up into the top five.

8. Vanessa Prebyl - Prop for being a trooper and getting on stage with stitches and a bandaged nose. I like Vanessa’s look and she was slightly off her game but when she’s on she’s a contender. She’s already qualified for the Olympia with her finish at the Houston Pro, so look for her to refine things and continue to be in the mix at future shows.

9. Jennifer Dietrick - Jennifer has one of the best bikini booties in the pro ranks. I like her physique and would have had her a few spots higher in this line up. I’m not sure this was her best suit to date but she’s definitely one who could move up into the top five.

10. Natalie Abrhiem - This was Natalie’s best showing as a pro and she has the potential to keep moving up. She needed to be a little tighter with her conditioning but a definite improvement from last year.

11. MaryJo Cooke-Elliott – MaryJo  made a return to the stage after a couple years away from the stage. She showed that she’s still got it and brought a nice bikini body to the stage. As she gets more comfortable with her presentation, look for her to move up in the division. If she had been a few places higher I don’t think anyone would have argued with it.

12. Laura Calderon - As I mentioned in my preview, Laura’s suit choice continues to be her biggest mis-step, at least in my opinion. I don’t think they should have allowed her to wear the suit she did as it looked like a thong and was way too small. She needed to be considerably tighter and the wide stance posing is not flattering. She has the potential to be a top five competitor but not with what you saw at this event.

13. Christie Marquez – An improvement from previous shows with her physique. If her presentation improves she’ll continue to move up. Definitely the best she’s looked at a pro.

14. Lindsey Morrison - Lindsey continues to find her groove in the pro ranks. Her suit choice worked against her. I didn’t find it flattering to her physique and overall it was too big, especially the botoms. If she ditches the suit and gets more comfortable on stage she’ll move up. This was only her second pro show so look for her to work through it.

15. Kelly Gonzalez - She’s a tiny woman in structure but continues to improve. She put on a little bit of muscle since last year and it’s working on her. As she continues to refine her stage presence and presentation, you’ll see her place higher in future shows.

16. Jennifer Pimentel - No one wants to be in last place of any competition, especially when it’s your pro debut. Jennifer turned pro at last year’s NPC Nationals and had been created a buzz for herself online. She didn’t bring the same package to this stage but it wasn’t a terrible look. Not everyone’s first show lands them in the top spots but it provides something to build on for future events. Apparently, Jennifer wasn’t happy with her prejudging callouts and decided to call it quits. She didn’t show up for the evening show and I’m told had some unpleasant words for some involved in the event. This may have been the first and last time you see her on an IFBB stage. I was mistaken, her overzealous husband “demanded” that she not return to the finals and it was he that was unhappy with her callouts.

St. Louis Pro Photographic Coverage

Bodybuilding.com has posted photos from the 2011 St. Louis Pro. I wasn’t at the event but the lighting was an obvious issue and hopefully one that will be corrected in future events. One of the most important things to a competition is the stage lights but it’s often an after thought or handled by people who don’t know what they are doing. This wasn’t the first pro show that’s had issues with the lighting.

I’d encourage all promoters to work with someone who understands stage lighting and if you don’t have the luxury of working with much light, work with the photographers in the pit they will all be more than willing to help you. When the lighting was corrected at the Dallas Europa Super Show it made a HUGE difference in the images and gave competitors their just due. That was accomplished by the promoters working with JM Manion on how to correctly set up the lights.

Photos last forever and are what fans see in the magazines and online. The also serve as a marketing tool for future events. The IRONMAN Pro always brought out top bodybuilders in large part because of their lighting and how they looked in the images.

Jennifer Andrews Wins St. Louis Pro Bikini

Jennifer Andrews notched her first pro win in just her third contest as an IFBB Pro. Andrews was the 2010 NPC Nationals Overall Bikini Champ, fourth at the 2010 Ft. Lauderdale Cup and finished 9th at the Bikini International earlier this month. She edged out fellow Bombshell teammate, Jessica Jessie by one point for the win. Jessica Jessie was competing in her first show of the 2011 season and if history repeats itself she only continue to improve as the year goes on. Jessica Putnam finished in third, up one spot from the Bikini International. One point separate each of the ladies on the judges’ scorecards.

Dina Al-Sabah took home fourth, up eight spots from her Bikini International. Angela Leong rounded out the top five in her pro debut. She tied with Christy Merritt who was relegated to sixth.

Wilkins Wins in St. Louis Pro Figure

Two-time Figure International Champion, Nicole Wilkins notched her second win this month at the 2011 St. Louis Pro Figure. Wilkins was a unanimous choice on the judges scorecards setting up a bit of a rivalry with Erin Stern. Erin notched wins in New Zealand and Australia this month. We’ll explore that match-up later. Nicole was the favorite going into the event and she backed it up by coming in on-point.

Teresa Anthony leaped back into the top spots after a seventh place Arnold finish. Teresa always displays style and grace on and off the stage, a trait other pros could take note on. Ava Cowan was in the third place spot, a position she held at Figure International earlier this month. Teresa was a bit sharper than she was in Columbus and it came as no surprise to me that she was battle for the top spot. Ava has competed a number of times in the last 6 months and has definitely refined her physique since turning pro. I look for her to take some time off and maybe do a warm up show before the Olympia.

Monica Specking edged out Michelle Battista-McDonald by two points for her second top five finish in her short pro career. Monica was last year’s NPC Nationals Overall figure winner. She placed third in her pro debut at the 2010 Houston Pro and immediately made a name for herself. Michelle was competing with a heavy heart, as I’m told her she learned her sister had passed away the night before the contest. Her fifth place finish was her highest as a pro.

MelissaFrederick held her own in the figure division, typically competing in the Fitness division.

Stern Strides to Second Win at IFBB New Zealand Pro

IFBB Figure Pro Erin Stern collected her second win in a row at the 2011 New Zealand Pro. Fellow American, Laticia Wilder was in the runner-up position and secured a spot at the 2011 Figure Olympia. In third, New Zealand’s only Figure Pro, Raechelle Chase leaped over Darlene Escano for the final qualification. Last week, Darlene was third and a week prior to that she was crowned the Arnold Amateur Figure Champion. I’d say it’s time for Darlene to take some much needed and deserved rest. Rounding out the top five was Ellena Reidi, a spot she held last week in Australia.

IFBB Australian Pro Grand Prix Photos

Photos from the 2011 IFBB Australian Pro Grand Prix are posted on Bodybuilding.com. The show took place over the weekend and drew thousands of fans from across the country. This year there was an expo held in conjunction with the event and I’m told it drew huge numbers. Congratulations to all the competitors.

Erin Stern Wins Australia Pro Figure Classic

Reigning Figure Olympia Champion, Erin Stern made the trip to the land down under for their inaugural Figure contest and it paid off. She edged out fellow American Alicia Harris who was in second by just one point for the Australia Pro Figure crown. Alicia brought a tighter physique than she displayed in Columbus and it helped propel her to a top spot. Darlene Escano is the surprise of the show. She secured a Figure Olympia spot in her first IFBB pro show. One week prior, Darlene was the overall Figure Champion at the Arnold Amateur. Quite an impressive showing for the Australian. New Zealand’s Raechelle Chase edged out Ellena Reidie by one point to finish in fourth. The top three are qualified for the 2011 Figure Olympia.
