Over the weekend I snapped several thousand contest photos at the 2009 NPC JR Nationals. The fitness routines are always my favorite to capture and this weekend was no different. Keisha Pedigo is one figure competitor to watch at the upcoming NPC Jr. Nationals. I’m told by Doug “G.B.” Martin that Keisha took home top honors over the weekend in Indiana. He was kind enough to send along this photo from the show. Congrats Keisha!

Congratulations to the five new pros that came out of Charleston, SC last weekend. Andrea Watson continued on her win streak and went four for four in each of her NPC figure contests. Pretty impressive for this being her first year on the competition scene and now she’s a pro. Yes, she really is that good and will be another shorty that can hang tall on the next level. The second figure pro card went to Gennifer Strobo. Gennifer steadily moved her way up in placings last year and found her way into the winner’s circle last Saturday. Great delts and a tiny waist helped her win a pro card. She’ll need to fill out and put on a little bit of size in order to be competitive in the pro ranks but hey that means eating. Gennifer is looking to make her debut in the Ft. Lauderdale Classic this fall. Team Bombshell Fitness has served notice on the female competitive front - these ladies don’t mess around when it comes to whoop’n some ass on stage. Both Andrea and Gennifer train with the husband/wife duo of Shannon Dey and Rob Rosseti, the masterminds behind Bombshell Fitness.
The Fitness pro card went to the very deserving Sandi Stuart. Sandi has been battling in the NPC ranks for years coming up just short a number of times. She had a solid routine, her physique was in condition and she came prepared. After the show Sandi had an overwhelming sense of relief and understandably so.
The two bikini pro cards went to Shelsea Montes and Stacey Oster. Shelsea’s a pint size little dynamo from Cedar Park, Texas. She’s was turning heads at the check-in and has the upbeat, sassy energy about her everywhere she goes. Shelsea brought that energy to the stage and won the judges and the crowd over. She’s a testament to what posing and presentation in the bikini division can do for you. It was clear she’d win her class but not the overall. Her presentation, in my opinion, is what helped her secure the first ever Bikini Pro card. She told me after the show that she works out, trains regularly and follows a healthy nutrition plan. The second pro card went to Stacey Oster of Greely, Colorado. Like Shelsea it was clear from the comparisons that Stacey was the stand out in her class. She looked to have softened up a bit from her Contra Costa win and also wore a different swimsuit. It wasn’t intential that she sported a different suit though. No, Stacey was a bit stressed out heading into this competition. She tells me her competition suit along with a number of bikinis, all her makeup, heels and other outfits had been lost while traveling. The airline lost her luggage and it’s still mysteriously missing to this day. Stacey definitely has a fitness model type of physique which is what I think the division should be described as. The name won’t change, it’s the Bikini Division, however when describing it to others I say think of a fitness model. Stacey is borderline “too muscular” for bikini in some people’s opinion. If she had showed up looking like she did when I saw her at the Denver Dream tryouts, I would agree she would be too muscular however that wasn’t the package presented on stage in Charleston.
Congratulations Cathy. As expected Cathy repeats as the NY Pro Female bodybuilding champ. Taking the runner-up position was Betty Pariso and in the third spot was Rosemary Jennings. Stacey Oster, from Colorado, won not only the short class but also the overall title at the 2009 NPC Contra Costa Bikini Division. She prevailed over tall class winner, Natalie Pennington for the overall Bikini crown.
In the Figure division, Wendy Fortino won the overall, as well as Class A. Other figure winners include Megan Phi (Class B), Jennifer Aguirre (Class C), and Christy Dalton (Class D). For Master’s Figure, Maria Harvey won the Masters 35+ Overall and the Masters 35+ Short, while Christy Dalton won the Masters 35+ Tall. Barbara Mencer won the Figure Masters 45+ class.
Congratulations to all the winners.
I offered up $100 to anyone who could correctly predict the top 5 in order. Troy Johnson who is very familiar with the Figure scene came the closest with his predictions. He called the top three in exact order which is impressive. He even called Inga as the dark horse and Erin Stern in the top five. I can’t hold his fifth place prediction of Kristin against him. I’ve got your first drink at the next show Troy. Nice work.

Last weekend the sixth annual Carla Sanchez Fitness Fiesta took place in Denver, Colorado. As always, the junior fitness competitors stole the show. These young stars are having fun and doing moves some of the top national competitors could take notes on. This is a great chance for the youngsters to compete and showcase their talents.
American Gladiator contender, Abbe Dorn competed in the model search and figure competition. When the night show was over she had to put on her police uniform and head to work. Talk about dedication. You don’t even have time to shower or get rid of the nasty tan before heading out on the job.
Hundreds of women submitted their photos over the past few months in the FLEX online Bikini Model contest. Sixty-six women joined the online winners for a chance a at the grand prize. Kathleen Tesori walked away with the title which included, contracts with Weider Publications and Champion Nutrition and will be featured in the 2009 FLEX Swimsuit issue. It has been a long competitive season for Huong Aricnas but she was able to reach her goal through persistence. Houng came up short, no pun intended, a number of times this year in her quest for the Olympia. She found the winning combination on Saturday night that put her in a qualifying spot for the Olympia.
Gina Aliotti repeated as champion with Sonia Adcock placing second in this show. It was no real surprise here that these women would finish one and two.
Desha Rodriquez narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympia in her second pro show, landing in fourth for the second week in a row. Two top five finishes for Desha is nothing to hang her head about. She took some time off and made an impressive mark in her debut. She has a great look and killer eyes, don’t be surprised if you see her in a few magazines in the coming months.
Meriza Deguzman found a look that wasn’t too muscular but it was too late for this year’s Olympia. She landed in fifth place which was far better than she’d fared all year.

Florida’s own Brandie Gardner achieved IFBB Pro status tonight by winning the overall Master’s Figure. Georgina Valenzuala from Mexico was the overall Figure winner & Natalie Waples from Canada won the other pro card. It’s proof that you can win and achieve pro status at a show held in the United States. Many time competitors say that other countries aren’t given a fair chance when competing in the USA. Tonight the two best women on stage won and they happened to be from countries other than the USA. Fifty-year old grandmother, Teresa Paschal from Alabama won the heavyweight and overall crown in the female bodybuilding.
As you can see I was a little off in some of my picks from prejudging and on with a few others. It’s the nature of the industry as everyone sees things a bit differently at times. This was a VERY well run show and the winners were well deserved. I was impressed with the figure winners and they are marketable on and off the stage.
Congratulations to everyone who competed and achieved their goals. Thanks to those of you who introduced yourself to me and told me you read this blog. I’ll see many of you next week in New York at the Team Universe.

Last night several women took the stage in hopes of taking a step closer to IFBB Pro status. The NPC USA Figure show was loaded with women in every class. Despite the number of competitors, it was a shared sentiment amongst industry regulars that the show was a little lackluster. There were a handful of women who really stood out but overall it was lacking comparatively speaking to Jr. Nationals and Jr. USAs in terms of quality physiques from top to bottom.
This is how I saw the classes breakdown from a view in the press pit:
A Class
It’s a two woman show here. Akane Nigro-Ismeal and Jamie Costa are the front-runners in this show. While both of the shorties are sporting nicely balanced physiques. I’d give the nod to Jamie for the win here. This is the best she has looked and has found a nice balance with her upper and lower body. Costa makes a strong case for winning the overall title.
B Class
The class will be between Candice Houston, Crystal Lowery and Ann Pratt. I’d call this class - Houston first, Lowery second and Pratt third. Hometown favorite, Candice Houston seemed to be the most complete in this group.
C Class
The toughest class of the show has four women in the mix for the win. Michelle Anderson, Kristin Nunn, Emily Nicholson and Chrissy Burton. I have this class between Michelle Anderson and Kristin Nunn. If you’re a regular on hardbody, you’ll remember I mentioned Kristin after the Jr. USAs. I felt she was overlooked in Charleston with a 12th place finish. She has a fresh face and a balanced physique. She’ll have to go through Michelle Anderson for the win though. Michelle looked a little fuller and less drawn in than she did at the Jr. USAs. I’d have Emily Nicholson in third and Chrissy Burton in fourth.
D Class
The top five in this class look to be Amanda Schenk-Darce, Shelley Hillesheim, Kristy McKinney, Amy Lee Martin, Amanda Quinlan. It looks like it is between Amy Lee Martin and first time USA competitor, Shelley Hillesheim. You saw Shelly profiled here on hardbody earlier in the week. She’s coming off a win at the Master’s Nationals and is in the mix to achieve her goal of pro status. Shelly is a beautiful woman who poses her balanced physiqued in a very poised manner. Amy Lee Martin looks to be at her best and could get the nod over Hillsheim. I’d go Amanda Schenk-Darce in third, Kristy McKinney in the fourth spot and Amanda Quinlan in fifth.
E Class
You could see another hardbodied girl out of Colorado in the top spot here. Jamie Meade is going head to head with Mendi Skamoto for the win. Jamie burst onto the national scene at the Jr. Nationals last month by taking third in this class. Ginny Gardea and Stephanie McDonald will also be in the running for a top spot. A favorite going into the show, Jenny Lewis was a little off and will be out of the top five here. She looked like she needed a rest and may have better suited to compete at Figure Nationals in New York. At this point her physique needs a rest but could be one to watch in the magazines, as she has a unique look.
F Class
When the competitors came out many thought the first name called out would be Monique Minton. She has a tiny waist, blinged out Passion Fruits suit and has a striking look. This Mary Lado lookalike definitely catches your attention. This class had only three names called out for the top spots however Monique’s was not one of them. The three called out were Michelle Battista, Alicia Marie and Rachel Cammon. The tall beauties in their own right. This class will come down to one of the industries top models, Alicia Marie and newcomer Rachel Cammon. Cammon has the goods to take down the super star model in this show. Marie has a stunning look but is better suited for modeling then the pro ranks. I’d give the nod to Cammo over the top model. Rachel and Alicia were excused while Michelle battled it out for a top five spot. Either way the winner of this class will have a beautiful representative in the pros.
I’d say the overall title will come down to the A and the F Class. Who will end up with the overall crown? We’ll find out tonight. Things could change in the two piece round as well though - it ain’t over till it’s over.
Twenty-five year old Jennifer Buckles proved persistence pays off. In her third time entering the FLEXonline Bikini Model Search contest she struck gold.
