Atlantic City Pro: Fitness Results

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, Contest Results, IFBB shows | Saturday, 12 September 2009, 7:06 pm

Tracey Greenwood repeated as the Atlantic City Fitness Champ once again. Unlike a couple years ago she won’t leave with an injured thumb but instead carry some momentum into the Olympia. Tanji Johnson showed that she is still a top tier pro by bringing a much improved showing. Tanji rocked the house and won the two-minute routine round. Nicole Duncan also kicked some booty in the routine rounds and it helped launch her into 4th. She’s already qualified for the Olympia from her third place showing in Dallas last month. Her physique wasn’t quite as sharp this time and it dropped her a bit in the physique rounds. Bethany Wagner more than held her own in the physique rounds and her 45-second routine helped her stay in the top three. She still needs some refining on the two-minute routine and when she does look out, this girl will be winning pro shows. Laticia rounded out the top five. Congratulations ladies.

Amanda Marinelli and Michele Mayberry were both on the original list but had to withdrew. Amanda due to an illness and Michele due to an injury. Michele did compete in the figure division at this show.

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, Contest Results, IFBB shows | Saturday, 12 September 2009, 5:58 pm

Shannon Meteraud notched another pro win under her belt tonight in the Atlantic City Pro Master’s Figure . She bested a strong field of 25 women. Tivisay Briceno took the runner-up position and had her best showing of the year. Melissa Frabbiele found third in her return to the stage after a few months away. Marie Ann Newman had an impressive pro debut by placing 4th. Just a few weeks ago she was battling it out as an amatuer in the NPC. Christiana Casoni also had an impressive return to her the stage and placed 5th. This was the most refine look she’s presented as a pro.

Atlantic City Pro: Figure Prejudging

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows, photos | Saturday, 12 September 2009, 1:59 pm

The IFBB Atlantic City Pro Figure prejudging took place this morning and it had a few surprises. The Brazilian bombshell Larissa Reis had her best showing to date and could be in the running for an Olympia qualification. Most wouldn’t have predicted her in their top five but won’t argue with her being there now. I’d like to see her posing improve a bit and it would showcase her physique better. She’s definitely improved from previous showings and should be stoked with the results here.  Shannon Meteraud will be in the mix for the top five however she looked a little soft from behind this morning. I had her winning the Master’s Pro last night but I’m not sure she’ll take top honors in this one. Tivisay Briceno also looks to be in the top five and could be as high as second and as low as fifth. Alicia Harris is looking to land in the top three and has competed in a number of shows this year where she’s just missed it. She has the tightest top five booty but continues to be plaqued by her posing. Will it be enough to knock her out of the top three? I don’t think so but you never know as all the details come into play at this level. Sherlyn Roy is having her best showing as a pro. It was one year ago that she took top honors at the Team Universe contest. She could be in a position to head to her first Olympia after tonight. I won’t be surprised with any arrangement of these five women as no one is 100% spot on but a case could be made for all to be in the top three.

The lone qualified Figure Olympia competitor, Patricia Mello looks to be on the outside of the top ten at this show. That means three women will qualify for the Figure Olympia here.  We’ll find out how the top five play out tonight at the finals.

Shina & Kirstin Win in Atlantic City

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, NPC Show, bikini | Saturday, 12 September 2009, 1:20 pm

Congratulations to HARDBODY Shina Mitchell Lewis for winning the overall NPC bikini crown today in Atlantic City. Shina is showing unselfish side again….as she is currently helping her hubby FLEX prepare for the night show. Tonight we’ll find out if the husband/wife duo are celebrating two victories.

Fellow hardbody Kirstin Lykus took top honors in her class. This was Kirstin’s first NPC show and she kicked some booty. Kirstin will be heading to the Team Universe contest next weekend looking to turn pro. You can meet Kirstin at the Gaspari Nutrition booth during the Olympia weekend.

Congrats ladies!

Atlantic City Pro Prejudging: Women’s Bodybuilding

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows, photos | Saturday, 12 September 2009, 12:03 pm

The prejudging for the women’s bodybuilding took place last night and there were a variety of physiques on stage. You’re top five (in no particular order) appear to be Kristy Hawkins, Lisa Aukland, Nicole Ball, Klaudia Larson and Brenda Raganot. Kristy Hawkins looks to have added some size since we last saw her but defending champ, Lisa Aukland will be tough to beat. Nicole Ball is a fan favorite and could find herself qualified for the Olympia here. Check out the women’s bodybuilding prejudging photos here.

Check out the physique round photos from the IFBB Atlantic City Pro Fitness. I really like the physique Bethany Wagner has brought to the stage in her last two shows. As she continues to refine her routine she could be a top pro in the years to come.

Amanda Marinelli Out of AC Fitness

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, Industry News, misc | Saturday, 12 September 2009, 10:51 am

Amanda Marinelli was slated to compete at the Atlantic City Fitness Pro show this weekend unfortunately she had to withdraw. Amanda shared the following news on Siouxcountry.com:

Unfortunately, I have withdrawn from the contest. I was diagnosed with asthma on Tuesday and last night after we arrived at the Trump Marina here in Atlantic City, I had an asthma attack. It has been a trying week learning about the medications and still practicing my ftness routines. For my own health and well-being, I decided to withdraw from the competition because my lungs are just not stable enough today! Thanks for all of your support Sioux Country friends and wish my husband, Dave Marinelli (IFBB Pro 202 Class) Good Luck!!!

We wish you the best and hopefully see you on the IFBB fitness stage again soon.

Atlantic City Pro: Master’s Figure Prejudging

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows | Friday, 11 September 2009, 6:14 pm

The IFBB Master’s Pro Figure prejudging looks to have Shanon Meteraud and Tivisay Briceno running one and two with Marie Ann Newman, Melissa Freabbiele and Rosalind Vanterpool rounding out the top five. This is an excellent debut for Marie Ann Newman who just a few weeks ago was battling it out as an amateur in the NPC ranks. Tivisay Briceno was able to bring her best today and it should put her neck and neck with Shannon Meteraud for the win. Shannon is the seasoned vet and looks to be the one to beat here. Melissa Frabbiele is no stranger to the top five and should be in contention for the top five again and a strong case for top three. Rosalind Vanterpool looks to round out the top five here but Jennifer DeJoya and Christina Casoni won’t make it easy for her there.

If I were to call it (and I’m not a judge and don’t pretend to play one online) I’d go…

1. Shannon Meteraud
2. Tivisay Briceno
3. Melissa Frabbiele
4. Marie Ann Newman
5. Rosalind Vanterpool
with Jennifer DeJoya and Christina Casoni in the hunt as well for a top five spot.

We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see how this one plays out.

Atlantic City Pro: Fitness Two-Piece

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows, Polls | Friday, 11 September 2009, 5:31 pm

The lineup looks much the same as the one piece, in fact is the same with the exception of Laticia Jackson moving up. This reinforces the case that doing away with the one-piece is a good move as the callouts and placings don’t change much, if at all. Laticia looks to be in a solid fourth where she may have been fourth or fifth in the one-piece. She could be looking at an Olympia qualification with where she is currently sitting. It will definitely make things interesting in the routine rounds. As it stands right now I’d have Tracey Greenwood and Tanji Johnson a lock for the top two. The third place spot would then be the lone qualifying spot for the Olympia (Tracey and Tanji are already qualified). I’d say is neck and neck between Bethany Wagner and Laticia Jackson for that spot. I’d give Bethany the nod in the physique rounds but Laticia brings energetic routine rounds to the stage. Bethany beat Laticia at the Europa but can she do it here? Nicole Duncan always brings a solid routine to the stage as well. We won’t know until tomrorow night who will win… Tracey or Tanji (in my opinion) and who will get the third and final qualifying spot… Who do YOU think will get it?

Atlantic City Pro Fitness Prejudging One-Piece

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows | Friday, 11 September 2009, 3:55 pm

It will be one of the last times you see these women sporting a one-piece suit. The IFBB Atlantic City Pro Fitness kicked things off tonight and in the first round your top three look to be Tracy Greenwood, Tanji Johnson and Bethany Wagner. This is the best Tanji we’ve seen in awhile as her conditioning has greatly improved from previous outings. Tracey Greenwood looks to be on the money with her physique. Bethany Wagner has brought another tight, balanced look to the stage. She has great symmetry and in the running here. If I were a gambling man I’d say it is Tracey first, Tanji second with Bethany third in the physique rounds. It looks to be a catfight for fourth, fifth and sixth place in this round. Look for Tonya Burkhardt, Laticia Jackson and Nicole Duncan to round out those spots. Nicole is already qualified for the Olympia so the pressure is off her. Laticia has a solid routine and if she is in that 4th spot going into the routine rounds she could overtake Bethany for an Olympia birth. Tonya Burkhardt has to be happy with the physique she’s brought to the stage. She was called out in the first group but left out for the second round of callouts.

Stay tuned for more on the Atlantic City Pro prejudging.

Meet Hardbody Shina Mitchell-Lewis

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, Hardbody Exclusive, interviews | Thursday, 10 September 2009, 8:53 am

Behind every man is a good woman or so the saying goes. In the Lewis residence of Murfreesboro, Tennessee that certainly holds true. Many people in the bodybuilding industry are aware of pro bodybuilder James “Flex” Lewis but few are aware of Mrs. Lewis, until now. Flex will take the stage again this weekend in Atlantic City but this time he’ll be joined on stage by his better half. No, she won’t be striking any most muscular poses but Shina Mitchell-Lewis will join him on stage as a NPC bikini competitor. I caught up with Shina and she shares a bit about herself and how she met the man of her dreams.

shinalewis

Name:
Shina Mitchell-Lewis

Born/raised in:
Born in Lansing Michigan, raised in Columbia, Tennessee

Currently live in:
Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Contest History:
2006 Greater Knox Classic Figure class C 2ND place. 2006 Tennessee State Championships Figure Class B 3rd place

Some may not know (maybe living in a cave) but who is your husband?
My husband and best friend is IFBB Pro James “Flex” Lewis!! He is a Gaspari Nutrition Athlete and is also sponsored by Weider Publications.

How did you two meet?
Flex and I met back in 2006. I was getting ready to compete in my first figure show and I had noticed on a Contest Flyer that Flex was going to be a guest poser at the show I was competing in. So you know back then MY SPACE was HUGE!!! So I found his picture and sent a friend request along with a message saying “you don’t know me but I will be competing in the Knoxville show and you know my trainers, so it would be nice to meet you…we are all going out for pizza after the show”, well at least a week or so went by and NO reply!! so I sent another message but this time it said “FINE don’t add me as your friend :( no cheesecake for you”… and it worked ….he finally messaged me back and added me and from that moment we have never lost contact!!

Two weeks into emailing, txting and finally calling he invited me to fly out to California to attend a Charity Golf event. Shawn Ray was in charge of who was going to attend this Charity even and he told Flex to bring me along…. so with a lot of thought and prayer I accepted his offer. I had asked my father to pray over the situation, bc if you knew me then I would have never flew clear across the country to meet some man from my space…LOL but he wasn’t just some man my father told me… My father came back and said he felt in his heart that if I didn’t fly over to meet Flex that I would regret it in the future…

So with a $500.00 credit limit on my “college” only credit card I BOOKED the flight. Mind you this was four weeks out from my first show…but I knew I had to meet him!!

The day finally came when I met him face to face. As I was descending into Orange County I txted my mother and best friends and said ” I think I am going to throw up bc I am about to meet the man I am going to marry”!! Seriously, I knew before I met him that I would spend the rest of my life with him…and three and a half years later I am happily married to that man!! He is a blessing and I love him so much.

Wow, that’s awesome and vert a very cool story.

The two of you are not only partners in life but also in business. Tell us about your business name and how that started.
The name of our business is Flex N Shake Smoothies, we started the business last year just before the Olympia! We had the opportunity to lease out a space in our gym and we went from there!

Is it tough running a business while dieting and what’s the key to keeping it going?

It is not tough to run a business whilst dieting but it can get hectic at times. The key to keep it going is to have trust worthy employees. I have the best employees ever. I have taught them exactly how I want our business ran and it gets done!!

What made you decide to compete in the same show as FLEX?
This was a last minute decision. I always diet along side with Flex, for moral support! I had decided earlier in the year that I wanted to compete this year but in October. So I hired a trainer and and started my prep. Well, about 3 weeks ago I was taking progression pictures to send them off to get a new plan from my trainer and Flex suggested then that I go ahead and compete now. So I threw this idea to my trainer and he gave the thumbs up!!

shina
Flex isn’t the only one with abs in the Lewis household.

How has the prep been while dieting together?
Like I said earlier, I Have always dieted with Flex for support and to work the booth at the shows with him…so its easy really

Who does the cooking?
I DO ALL THE cooking!!! I love to cook!

What’s the most challenging thing about being married to a pro bodybuilder?
The most challenging thing is making sure he has everything ready and packed before he travels for an event. Especially because he is from the United Kingdom, we travel a lot over seas and I have to make sure I have all the right traveling documents organized, food cooked and prepared, and remember to pack the universal adapters for our electrical appliances

What do the two of you do when not eating chicken, fish or doing cardio?
We enjoy married life! We enjoy going out to eat at a nice restaurant, going to go see a movie and/or just chill out at home with the dog!!

What advice do you have to women who are considering competing but unsure about it?
Read all you can about nutrition and training. I believe  knowledge is key with that said I’m blessed to have a husband who is very knowledgeable in nutrition and the training side of things but when we decided to do this years Atlantic city Show I hired a trainer, Mike Davies (www.mikedaviesfitness.com) who has been fantastic. By doing so it alleviates unnecessary relationship stress especially since Flex and I are both doing the show.

Next try to attend as many shows as possible and look online (hardbody.com) so you can see what the judges are looking for. Plus you can pick up tips for hair and make-up, suit colors and styles, and generally the whole competition criteria.

If my husband is dieting for a show, personally I would “sympathy diet” with him. We diet very well together plus in my eyes if you have a supportive spouse that eats similar to you or lives a healthy lifestyle it makes the dieting a whole lot easier on both ends!

Ladies, try to get your other half involved when you decide to compete, it will make the whole experience much more enjoyable!

What’s on the menu for after the show?
Mmmmm lets see my husband and I love the Cheesecake Factory…so Probably the Baja chicken Tacos and the Chris’s outrageous chocolate cake!!

Any aspirations on becoming an IFBB pro like hubby?
I would love to be an IFBB Bikini Pro…my next show will be the Nationals in November.

Any other new ventures the two of you are embarking on?
We will be opening a gym in January 2010! The name is Olympus Athletic Club and the Flex N Shake will also be inside the new gym!

Anyone you want to thank?
I want to thank my husband and family for all their prayers and support. I also want to thank hardbody for this interview…I love sharing my story and hope to inspire other woman to push hard for what they aspire to do in life.

Thanks for sharing more about yourself Shina and best of luck to both of you this weekend!

Poll: IFBB Atlantic City Figure

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows, Polls | Wednesday, 09 September 2009, 8:05 am

The final competitor lists are in for the IFBB Atlantic City Pro Figure competition. This is one of the largest fields of the year with 31 women in the Open and 24 in the Masters. Technically NO ONE  is qualified for the Figure Olympia in this line up. That’s staggering to me. I say “technically” because Shannon Meteraud is qualified to compete in the Fitness Olympia but not the Figure. Which means the top three women in this show will qualify for the 2009 Figure Olympia. **(I was incorrect here – Patricia Mello is qualified by way of the 2008 Kentucky Pro – Thanks Troy) There will be a new AC Figure Pro crowned this weekend as Jenn Gates is not back to defend the title. Rookie Alicia Harris has been added to the list and it could be her time to land in the top three. What do you think Hardbody peeps? Who will qualify for the Olympia?

Atlantic City Pro Gets a Bit More Interesting

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows | Friday, 04 September 2009, 2:29 pm

The competitor lists for the IFBB Atlantic City Pro have been updated again and the figure line-up just got a bit more interesting. Shannon Meteraud, who is already qualified for the Olympia in Fitness, has decided to jump into the Open and Master’s Figure competitions. Might she be using this as a tune-up for the Olympia and hope to collect a bit of cash along the way? She’s gotta be considered one of, if not thee, favorite to win the figure competitions. Sherlyn Roy and Nicole Pitcher-Scott have also been added to the mix and could be in the running for the top five at this show. Bethany Wagner will look to move into an Olympia qualifying spot in the fitness as her name has been added to the line-up.

Current numbers as of today are at:

Female Bodybuilders: 22
Fitness: 12
Open Figure: 29
Master’s Figure: 20

Don’t be shocked if there aren’t a couple more surprises to the lists before it’s show time.

Atlantic City Pro Continues to Grow

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows | Thursday, 03 September 2009, 6:14 pm

Updated competitor lists are available here for next weekend’s IFBB Atlantic City Pro. The number of entrants continue to increase but the fitness competition is at its lowest. Props to the female bodybuilders for showing that there is still an interest across the globe to compete.

Current numbers as of today are at:
Female Bodybuilders: 20
Fitness: 10
Open Figure: 26
Master’s Figure: 16

There are some emerging story lines to watch in each division.

Bodybuilding
Lisa Aukland will attempt to defend the title she won at this show in ‘08. Rita Rae will be making her pro debut and a number of very good female bodybuilders will look to snag a qualifying spot to the Olympia. Nicole Ball, Kristy Hawkins, Klaudia Larson, Mah-Ann Mendoza, Brenda Raganot and Jennifer Sedia should all be in the hunt for a top call-out as well. This looks to be the most competitive show of the year.

Fitness
Despite the numbers being dismal there are a few headlines to watch. Tracey Greenwood is the odds-on favorite to repeat as champion again, at least on paper. She competed in this show a couple years ago and injured her thumb. She certainly will not be looking to repeat that act. I’m told she’ll be unveiling a new routine, which she’ll be duplicating at the Olympia two weeks later. Nicole Duncan is a promising competitor on the rise and will look to be in the money again at this show. I like her look and her routines, she will be a contender. The Johnson sisters will battle it out for the first time as fellow competitors. Safiya, the rookie, will take on the seasoned-vet Tanji at this event. Michele Mayberry showed promise at the Europa and could be in the mix for the top five. Laticia Jackson will look to improve on her Europa finish and head to the Olympia.

Figure
Maggie Blanchard is down to compete in Figure and I’m not sure why. She’s competed in Fitness but will look to try her hand in the figure competition apparently. Tivisay Briceno has been on the bubble the last couple of shows and will look to move up into a qualifying spot for the Olympia. Candice John will make the trip from Trinidad and hopes to be in the top spots. She turned some heads last year in NYC and could do it again here. Cheri Lewis will return to the stage again after a couple years off. Marie Ann Newman is wasting no time in making her pro debut as is Elissa Schlichter. There are no “big names” in this contest which makes it a bit more exciting to follow as it is anyone’s game.

The same holds true for the Master’s Figure division. There isn’t anyone, at least on paper, that you can point to and say, “Oh this is her show”.

Props to Tony Blinn from IFBBpro.com for the list update.

Atlantic City Pro Competitor Lists

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows | Monday, 31 August 2009, 5:17 pm

There’s only one show left for competitors in the world of fitness and bodybuilding left to qualify for this year’s Olympia. The figure women have two remaining shows. The next show up is the Atlantic City Pro, which will be held on September 11-12th at the Trump Marina Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ. Below are the competitor lists as of today via IFBBPro.com.

Don’t be surprised if a few more names are added to each of these lists before it is showtime. The Master’s Figure is a very solid line-up and I look for more Master’s Figure events to be added next year.

Atlantic City Figure Prejudging

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows, misc | Saturday, 13 September 2008, 8:45 am

As expected Jenn Gates is in top form and should notch another win in Atlantic City. Second will likely go to Amy Fry with Jane Awad notching third. Awad is looking to qualify for the Figure Olympia while Fry did so earlier in the year. A third place finish would give Jane the qualification she is looking for. Gates sported new suits at this show and her hair/make up (done by Laurie St. Michael) looked great. Definitely proved she is a top contender for the Figure Olympia title.

Others of note:
Tana Clough in her second pro show, softened it up a bit from her debut. Her suit cut in the one piece from the back hurts her a bit as it is cut a bit too high. Great showing in her second outing and should be in the top ten.

Desha Rodriquez is making her pro debut after sitting out a year. It looks like the time off has done her body well and should land in the top five in her first pro contest. Definitely an improved physique from the last time she took the stage.

Kristin Gomes and Candice John have moved up in the callouts and the judges are showing them some love. Candice had a break out show last week in New York and looks to be holding onto a top five spot again in this show.

Atlantic City Competition

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows, misc | Friday, 12 September 2008, 7:14 pm

The IFBB Fitness competition took place tonight with it looking to be a battle between Tracey Greenwood and Mindi O’Brien. Mindi O is hitting the stage for the first time in months and her physique looks spot on. Tracey is looking to make it three pro wins in a row before heading to the Olympia. As long as Tracey doesn’t injure her thumb like she did in this contest before she should notch another win in her belt. Check out the photos from prejudging on FLEXonline.com.

The Master’s Figure contest took place tonight as well. The top five should end up being Jeanette Kolonias (formerly Freed), Tivisay Briceno, Juliana Malacarne, Christine Wan and Melissa Frabbiele. Who will get the victory? We’ll have to wait until tomorrow night’s finals for the results. The open figure prejudging takes place tomorrow where the favorite heading into the show is Jenn Gates. When I spoke with her earlier today she told me she is ready and looks better than she did at the Arnold. Tomorrow the action starts at 10:30am, East Coast Time.

Who will win the Atlantic City Fitness this weekend?

Isaac Hinds | Atlantic City, IFBB shows, misc | Thursday, 11 September 2008, 5:29 am

Can Tracey Greenwood make it three for three? She won the Houston Pro, took top honors at the Europa Super show and now will compete in her backyard of Atlantic City. She’ll have to go through Canada’s Mindi O’Brien who is coming back off an injury and hungry for a win. Stacy Simons tells me she’s been doing some crazy things with her diet, like eating fish for breakfast, and is ready for the show. These three veterans will battle it out this weekend. Which one will prevail or will someone else catch them sleeping and take top honors?
