Sting’s acoustic version of “Message in a Bottle” is pretty kick ass. Enjoy your Wednesday peeps.
Kathleen “Special K” Tesori is back with another update as she heads into the Jacksonville Pro next month. Find out what’s crack’n with the current Muscle & Fitness Hers cover girl.

This past week I have been really tired and sore. Mentally I am ready to push hard and get things done. It is this energy that helped me get through the week. The holiday weekend came at a perfect time… gave my body a chance to recharge. Dieting has not too bad up to this point but things tend to get a little boring from here on out. More to come on this subject.
The Moab River trip
I went to Moab with the girls to raft and hike for Breast Cancer Awareness. I had my meals and supplements packed and I was ready to not skip a beat of prep.
Day One: The hotel had a fitness center so after the hike I hit the gym only to find out that the treadmill was broke, the elliptical made the most annoying noise (not tolerable at all you could hear it all the way down the hall) and the bike seat was broke. So I took my cardio outdoors in the above 90 degree heat. On a positive note -The gym’s weight equipment was working so I was able to get a great leg workout completed.
Day Two: After rafting I headed to the gym to find out that the pulley system to work upper body broke earlier that afternoon. Ok I thought to myself I have to get a workout in so I ended up heading to the track in 100 degree heat! I created an effective workout using a wobbly bench and the track.
What I learned from the trip – always remember to bring bands and dumbbells if you can. I usually always bring bands with me but since the hotel had a gym, I thought I would be fine.
Eating clean on this trip was not a problem. At first some of the girls thought it was weird that I could be in such great shape and still could not take the weekend off. I explained to them; I was weeks away from show time and the level of competition is so high, I have to stay right on track. I also told them I had a team of people who have invested time and money in to me, and once I explained those two things they very understanding.
Day Three: Glad to get out of the heat and into a cool gym.
Get to know the Chef
When it comes to a cheat meal I always choose Sushi. I try different sushi restaurants but I usually go to the one closest to my house. One day the chef and I got to talking about why I order my rolls so clean and now when I come in he creates rolls that follow my diet with his own personal touch. The Chef, Scott, will use fresh lemons, jalapenos, as little rice as possible and fresh spices. His unique creations make my cheat meal extra tasty and I have a piece of mind knowing my food is tailored to meet my competition diet. If you have a favorite restaurant get to know the chef.
My favorites this week:
Raw cabbage cut up in big chunks ( they crunch like chips/crackers)
Tilapia with a sprinkle of sea salt and stevia
Hope everyone had a great Fourth of July!
IFBB Fitness Pro Marnie Holley exchanged wedding vows with NPC Bodybuilder Jerome Ferguson over the weekend. The couple tied the knot during the annual Muscle Beach contest on July 4th. Ron Avidan was there to capture their wedding day. Can you believe Ron skipped out before the cake was served?
Congrats Marnie and Jerome! See more photos from the wedding on bodybuilding.com.

A total of 32 women are slated to compete this Saturday at the 2010 NY PRO Figure Event. This will be the largest field of figure competitors in quite some time. 3 out of the 4 who turned pro at the 2010 JR Nationals are wasting no time and will be competing at this event. The 4th will compete next month. Juliana Malacarne is making a return to the stage, it’s been a few months since we last saw the Brazilian take the figure stage. Meriza DeGuzman has thrown her heels into the mix as well. Quite a few rookies will make their debut at this event. Who will place the highest? We’ll find out on Saturday.
Look for my predictions on RXmuscle.com as we team up to preview this contest. I’ll be there photographing the event and tweeting via HARDBODYNEWS. Anyone tweeting about the event, use #TeamU for your hashtag.

Hey, Hey Alright… ALO brings you “Big Appetite”, which I’m sure many competitors currently have with the season in full swing.
Bodysport.com reported over the weekend that Monica Brant is leaving the IFBB for another organization. Terry Goodlad (owner of bodysport.com) calls it, “one of the most shocking fitness industry news developments in the history of women’s physique sports”. I wouldn’t go that far. Surprising? Perhaps to some but to those in the industry, it isn’t all that shocking.
Monica Brant is considered an icon in the fitness industry by many women and rightfully so. She’s inspired countless women to compete and has found more success off stage than on. She is the 1998 Fitness Olympia champ and has competed in over a dozen IFBB Figure shows. She came up short in her quest for a figure title and many people felt she should have a couple of Figure wins under her belt. I would agree with her winning at least one Arnold and I had her winning the 2005 San Francisco Pro. That’s the nature of the competing in a subjective arena. You win some you loose some and not everyone is going to agree. I’d argue that Monica actually gained MORE fans by NOT winning.
It’s no secret that Monica hasn’t been happy with her placings in the IFBB. She publicly commented, numerous times, that it wasn’t about where she placed and she she did it (competed) for the fans. Monica hadn’t qualified for the 2010 Figure Olympia and it she found herself out of the top 6 at the 2010 Figure International. Frustrated? Likely, as would any competitor who has been in the top ranks for years and now finds themselves on the outside looking in.
Which would leave some wondering if you compete for the fans, why compete in another organization that has little to no attention in the United States? Why compete in a Canadian organization with no shows in the USA? The Figure International (the Arnold) & Figure Olympia are the two biggest shows with the best physiques in the world in front of a number of fans. My guess is we’ll see her tied into their marketing and promotion much like they’ve used Jennifer Nicole Lee in hopes of capitalizing off her name. It’s likely this is more of a business decision that just wanting to compete in a new organization. Adding a “name” competitor is an attempt to add credibility. Understandably so as would any organization trying to gain credibility.
Do I think her leaving is a big deal? No, I don’t. If it had happened in 2003 or 2005 to compete in another organization then I would probably have a different opinion. Does she have a great physique for a woman approaching 40? Absolutely but let’s not forget she’s competing against women in their 20s and early 30s and there comes a point in time when you’re body isn’t what it used to be. Can she still compete? Sure, that’s her right as it is any woman at any age but you also have to be realistic and know you may not place as well as you once did.
Is her leaving the IFBB news? Certainly as Monica is still one of the biggest names in the fitness industry.
Did the IFBB push her out? No. It’s the age old story of when does a competitor call it a career on stage? How long does one stick around and continue to compete? That’s up to the competitor to decide however there is a time in every competitor’s career to know when to hang it up. Is it time for Monica to hang it up? She obviously doesn’t feel it is and that’s her prerogative.
Do I think it was a well executed announcement? Not at all. Public Relations 101 tells you that you don’t make a big announcement over a holiday weekend. Her web site still reads IFBB Pro Athlete and Cover Model. Could she have gotten more exposure if the announcement was planned better? Yes but I’m writing about it so some would argue that it did the job despite the poorly planned timing. Fair enough, I’d say but those of you looking to announce major things should do it in the middle of the week and never around a holiday.
Will it mean the end of the IFBB? Hardly. There are more competitors than ever competing in NPC Figure (the IFBB’s amateur organization) and the competition in the IFBB continues to get more and more difficult. Will others leave in hopes of greener pastures? Sure. There will always be competitors unhappy with their placings and think that a show with cool marketing and big promises will open up more doors. I say go for it. If you want to compete in one of the alphabet organizations that has little to no criteria in order to be considered a “pro” then knock yourself out. It’s an ego driven industry and if you need to place well to feel part of something and that defines your worth, then by all means do it.
At the end of the day Monica will still continue to hold her camps and make her living away stage. She’s one of the few women who “gets it” when it comes to making a business out of the exposure that from competing. Had she gotten the same amount of exposure had she chosen not to compete in the IFBB? I highly doubt it but no one will ever know for certain. I don’t feel she needs to compete in order to continue to run a successful business and I wish her all the best. I’ve worked with Monica on a number of projects over the years from photographing her first F.E.M. Camp in LA to redesigning her web site years ago. I’ve seen the impact she’s had on women’s lives and know she will continue to be an influence in the years to come. If competing in another organization makes her happy, so be it and I wish her all the best.
Loyal Hardbody.com readers have noticed I took some much needed time away from the industry and the computer. I took the holiday weekend to enjoy my birthday and some time with good friends at the UFC event. It was a reminder that taking time for yourself and away from the hustle and bustle of the industry is good. It helps you escape from everything and come back renewed.
Hang on because it’s going to be a crazy ride with shows going non-stop for the next 8 weeks.
A couple little birdies are chirp’n that the first Figure Olympia champ, Davana Medina is returning to the IFBB stage but this time in the bikini division. Davana won the Figure Olympia in 2003, 2004 and 2005. She stepped away from the stage and has since become a proud mother.
Stay tuned for more info on Davana’s return to competition and if/when it might be…
**Update: I checked with the IFBB office and Davana is NOT registered for 2010. Hmmm. She could still send in her IFBB dues but will she and decided to compete?

Here’s a song you’ll be hearing quite a bit this summer… Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire”.
With the transition from treadmill to track, the warm up and drills can almost be a workout by itself if done properly! Let’s look closer at why it’s necessary to warm up: to increase body temperature, increase muscle elasticity, start the metabolic processes involved with exercise, and to prevent injury. Just like you wouldn’t walk out of the locker room at the gym and squat 200 lbs, you don’t want to show up at the track and just start sprinting.

Start with a light 800 meter (twice around the track) jog.
Then mark out 20 meters, or about 65’ on the track or on the field for sprint drills. You can use just about anything to mark off distance – a water bottle, keys, etc. The focus of these exercises is to take short, very quick steps, but cover very little ground while doing them. Each drill is executed for 20 meters, with a stride/brisk jog out of the drill for about 20 meters. After the stride, walk back to the starting point.
Here are a few drills that I like:
• Butt kicks
• Hi-knees
• Backward run
• Straight-leg short/shuffle
• Rhythm
• B-Skips
• A-Skips
It will take some time to get used to the warm ups, drills, and workouts. Don’t feel bad if you’re tired after trying these!! If you’re still looking to get volume after drills, I recommend running 10 diagonals on the soccer/football field. You’ll just start at one corner of the field and stride to the diagonal corner, walking the short side of the field for recovery.
Happy sprinting!
