Hardbody Investigates Gluten Free

One of our contributors did some digging into the world of “Gluten Free”. What’s this craze all about?

investigate
When I first heard the term “Gluten Free” I thought it was an additional item I needed to incorporate into my diet to be healthier. I started checking labels while grocery shopping to target gluten. I see gluten free stores popping up in my local neighborhood and restaurants have added a gluten free section on the menu.

What is Gluten Free all about?

Gluten is the protein portion in wheat, rye, barley and other grains. More specifically it’s the composite of two proteins called gliadin and glutenin.

Some people cannot tolerate gluten when it comes in contact with the small intestine and this condition is called celiac disease.

Celiac is a disease known to be genetic. If your close relatives have a specific gene, you are more likely to have or get this disease. Gluten injures the lining of the small intestine and can result in weight loss, bloating, diarrhea, gas, abdominal cramps and vitamin deficiencies. The small intestine is used in the body to absorb and transport nutrients throughout the body. The lining can heal if people eliminate gluten from their diet. Because the exact cause is unknown there is no known way to prevent the development of celiac disease

I thought it would be great to quickly review the digestion process:

1. Swallowed food is pushed into the esophagus
2. From the esophagus food is passed through to the stomach
3. The stomach has three mechanical tasks
- store swallowed food and liquid
- mix up the food, liquid, and digestive juice produced by the stomach
- empty its contents slowly into the small intestine
4. Digested nutrients are absorbed through the small intestinal walls and transported throughout the body
5. The waste products of this process, fiber and old cells are pushed into the colon also known as the large intestine
***The liver and pancreas come into play because of the digestive enzymes they produced to help breakdown food.

Everyone’s large intestine has a large number of bacteria. When good bacteria prospers it usually suppresses the bad bacteria. Individuals with celiac have an altered set-up of bacteria in the large intestine and supports the bad bacteria when gluten is introduced.

Celiac can develop at any point in life. It is estimated that 9 out of 10 people with celiac have no idea. Blood tests can detect several special antibodies which will help providers determine if a patient has celiac. Many articles online mentioned that women are affected more commonly than men.

Delaying diagnosis or not following a gluten free diet will put you at risk for the following conditions:
· Autoimmune disorders
· Certain types of intestinal cancer
· Fractures
· Infertility
· Osteoporosis

Great Websites for Gluten Free Recipes and Facts:
http://www.glutenfreeda.com/index.asp
http://www.celiac.org

Does this mean every one should follow a Gluten Free diet? Obviously if you are diagnosed with celiac disease you will want to follow it. If you don’t have celiac you may see some benefits of removing gluten from your daily life but don’t feel like you need to because it’s the new “in” thing. Many people will talk about gluten free and it’s nothing more than a gimmick for them to gain attention. Some companies are using gluten free as a marketing ploy. Every body is different, find what works for you and it may or may not include gluten.

World Cup… What The Heck is It?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or on a remote island you’ve likely heard something about “The World Cup” whether you like it or not but what the heck is it?

The World Cup refers to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport’s global governing body. American Football is different than how the rest of the world refers to football. Football to the rest of the world is soccer. The World Cup is the most wildly viewed sporting event in the world (an estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match in 2006) and is held every four years.

Wikipedia describes the format:
The current format of the tournament involves 32 teams competing for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over a period of about a month – this phase is often called the World Cup Finals. A qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding three years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nation(s).

Will you follow the World Cup?

I’ve never gotten into it and find it annoying that ESPN and other media outlets are jamming their coverage down our throats. I can appreciate the history and the fact that it brings about global competition but I’d rather watch the Olympics.

Nike isn’t the official sponsor of the World Cup but it is getting the most buzz with the commercial shown below. The video has been over 14 million times on Youtube.

Keeping Fit with Dre’s Pregnancy

Andrea recaps how things went down with the delivery of her first child.

dretaylor

May 1st, we were digging holes to plant trees in (yes, WE) and my water broke! We got to the hospital a couple hours later and I still wasn’t contracting. I really didn’t want Petocin so they gave me a few more hours to get it going. Micah (my husband) and I walked (more like raced when the nurses weren’t looking) through the halls but to no avail. Petocin started at around 6:30 pm but I really didn’t feel anything until about 9pm. By the middle of the night I was at the highest dosage they could give me and Micah and I were falling asleep in between contractions! I labored through the night, hitting Micah to wake up at the beginning of every contraction and I felt his head hit my back and the deep sleeping breaths in between each one! Poor guy!

At about 9am I was 8 cm dilated but I was really feeling the urge to push – that was when I told Micah I wanted to throw in the towel and get the drugs. We didn’t know at the time but I had back labor, which is when the baby is head down, but facing up (ceiling) instead of down (floor) so with each contraction the back of his head was rubbing against my tailbone. Some women actually break their tailbone with this type of labor – luckily I was not one of them! But, the bone on bone issue does make labor a lot more painful. Plus I felt like I was having convulsions as I tried desperately not to push!

Thank God for my strong hubby – he kept me focused and coached me through each painful contraction so that I didn’t give up on the natural delivery! I started pushing at 11:20 am and Tripp was born at 12:21 pm and I’m so glad we made it without any meds! He was so alert and beautiful! He came out looking around, not even crying – what a trooper! He was 7lbs 6oz and 19.5” long. He took to breastfeeding perfectly (I’m thinking it’s a guy thing? hehe) and he’s been perfect these past few weeks.

Thank you all for your encouragement throughout the pregnancy! And if you’re pregnant or thinking about kids I’d try for the natural delivery. I can’t explain the feeling you get when you feel your baby coming out! It’s a high that is unimaginable and totally worth the hours of pain if you can believe me!

Now I’m counting down the weeks for 2 things… a good workout and… well…you know :)

‘Tis The Season…

The NPC/IFBB competitive season is about to heat up. A number of regional NPC shows have taken place across the country and a we’ve seen a few promising new stars in the IFBB ranks. Next weekend the NPC JR. Nationals will kick off the national level competition and a few women will move on to the pro ranks. Along with this show brings out hordes of “photographers”. Some of them are good and others are nothing more than men (and sometimes women) with cameras. Many of these “photographers” will pay women to shoot and it may seem tempting but think twice before doing so. I can’t count the number of times women have told me they thought it was a good idea at the time but then years later look back and wish they hadn’t.

The Jr. Nationals is often a breeding ground for these types of characters who call themselves photographers and/or videographers. You will see them lurking around the hotel escalators or outside the competitor’s meeting waiting to strike. If you’re not familiar with someone’s work and their web site, DON’T SHOOT. While a couple hundred bucks may seem like a great idea when you’re trying to pay for competition costs, think about the long term. If you’re cool with being part of a member’s only site that typically caters to those with muscle fetishes then cool. I don’t care what you do and that’s your choice. Remember, it’s YOUR choice to shoot with someone. No one is holding a gun to your head and don’t be afraid to say no. Yes, it’s flattering to have someone wanting to take your photo but don’t let your ego get in the way. The photos and video last forever in this digital age.

Typically, not always, the best photographers are not going to be paying you to shoot at a show. More often than not it’s the other way around. If you want quality portfolio images from a professional photographer you’ll likely pay them to shoot you. Again, I’m NOT saying ALL photographers who pay you to shoot are bad. There are a handful who are good and they’ll compensate you for your time/images but remember they will likely end up on a member’s only site. There are guys who pose as photographers but are nothing more than fans of female muscle. These are the “creepers” and the ones to stay away from. There’s a difference between a fan and a creeper photographer. Those of you attending the show in Chicago next weekend will see them lurking around. Trust your gut.

There’s also a character who likes to have women book his shoots. She’ll approach you in an unassuming, friendly manner and ask your schedule/availability and then tell you she’d like to book a shoot with you. Only it’s not with her but with her photographer boss. I refer to this as the Taco Bell / Little Taco scenario. When you’re hungry and had a few drinks a drive through Taco Bell seems like a great idea. Those little tacos are awesome and taste great or so you had yourself to believe. Until the next day when you come to your senses and have a gut ache wondering why you did it.

Shooting when in your best shape is a good idea but don’t wake up and wish you hadn’t.

Amanda Savell’s Family Files Federal Lawsuit

The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Amanda Jo Earhart Savells’ family has filed a federal lawsuit. Their lawsuit is aimed at the people who supplied Dave Jacobs, Amanda’s one time boyfriend and eventual murder, with steroids. The Earhart’s feel “roid rage” was to blame in the death of their daughter. Authorities determined that Jacobs had killed her and then turned the gun on himself. Dave Jacobs was connected to one of the biggest steroid busts in U.S. history. He had been cooperating with federal authorities and given probation in exchange for assistance in the case.

The article says, “Kathy and Gary Earhart of Plano filed a federal suit in Marshall, Texas, on June 4 against Lei Jin, whom the petition describes as a Chinese citizen in Shanghai with a residence in Wisconsin, and GeneScience Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd., also in Shanghai.”

The lawsuit also lists fifty “John Doe” corporations and businesses as alleged co-conspirators. The Morning News goes on to quote Amanda’s father (Gary Earhart) saying, “I used to run fitness centers. I’ve seen guys go crazy” on steroids. “The worst thing about steroids is that they work. They also work on you mentally.”

I can’t even imagine what if feels like to be in the Earhart’s shoes. No one should have to experience the death of their child much less the way they did. That said, I don’t see how they will prevail in this lawsuit. The problem, in my opinion, is not the substance but the person taking them. Dave Jacobs was a man who had issues and the one to blame, not the people who may have manufactured a steroid he may have taken. He’s certainly not the first and won’t be the last person to take steroids. You don’t read headlines about them killing someone and then themselves.

G’s Tip of the Week – Stand Tall

gtip

Remember your mother always telling you to “Sit up straight, Stand tall… suck in your belly, chest out…”?

Don’t underestimate the importance of posture! Posture is key in everything we do from sitting in a chair, walking on a treadmill, lifting weights, standing on stage and even building our confidence! When you practice good posture, you actually feel more capable. How you carry yourself affects not only how others perceive you, but a great deal of how you feel in your own skin and your energy. Lift your head up. Get in the habit of lifting your abs up and in. Stand up tall. You will feel better instantly!

“Let us stand a little taller, if you don’t, you will never strengthen yourself” ~Gordon Hinckley

Arnold Sports Film Festival to Debut in March 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 9, 2010

Arnold Sports Film Festival to Debut in March 2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Arnold Sports Festival and Ideas United today announced that the first Arnold Sports Film Festival will be held March 4-6, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio, in conjunction with the Arnold Sports Festival.

The Arnold Sports Film Festival (ASFF) will be committed to the discovery, nurture and presentation of the best short-form international filmmaking focused on personal athletic endeavor. The ASFF will complement and extend the largest multi-sport event in the world, which was founded in 1989 by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The ASFF will build on the Arnold Sports Festival’s decades-long commitment to highlighting achievement in individual sport and athletic competition.

Produced in partnership with Ideas United – the creators of Campus MovieFest (CMF), the world’s largest student film festival – the ASFF will seek films and filmmakers who explore the journey, perseverance, and triumphs of individuals who participate in athletic expression and competition.

“We couldn’t be more excited to combine the power of film with the passion of athletics for this one-of-a-kind showcase,” said David Roemer, CEO of Ideas United and Co-founder of Campus MovieFest. “We feel honored and privileged to partner with the Arnold Sports Festival while leveraging our experience of providing filmmakers with unforgettable opportunities.”

Filmmakers of all ages will be invited to submit films less than 15 minutes in length to the ASFF in a variety of categories including narrative, documentary, animated, and broadcast films. The films should explore the lives, efforts, inspirations, and hopes of people striving for achievement in individual athletic pursuits ranging from bodybuilding to boxing, gymnastics to judo, table tennis to weightlifting, grappling to skateboarding.

“Arnold and I welcome this opportunity to join in partnership with the long-established and highly successful Campus MovieFest team,” said Jim Lorimer, co-promoter of the Arnold Sports Festival. “The CMF program focus has been on affording students throughout the nation the chance to compete as film producers and directors. This goal fits perfectly with our youth-oriented Arnold Sports Festival program. Short film submissions will also be encouraged from film production artists of all ages throughout the nation and the world.

“The film focus will be on the athletic endeavors and motivations of the individual athlete. Why does the athlete do it and what does it mean in his or her life? The stories will be of great human interest and the ASFF winner will be invited to spend a day on a Hollywood movie set with Arnold in addition to other prizes.”

The Arnold Sports Film Festival encourages both traditional and alternative storytelling, combining creativity and excellence in cinema with the drama of athletes determined to be the very best. In addition, Ideas United will bring the ASFF to more than 50 colleges, universities and high schools as part of Campus MovieFest. CMF provides students with everything they need to create short movies for free and will extend the ASFF reach to more than 100,000 college students.

The ASFF – through a renowned entertainment and sports industry jury that will include Gov. Schwarzenegger – will award significant prize packages to winning filmmakers during the Arnold Sports Festival. The ASFF will be held at the Arena Grand Movie Theater in downtown Columbus.

Filmmakers, partners, and media may learn more at www.arnoldsportsfestival.com before submissions open in July 2010.

Roadside Steak Seduction

Check out this monster steak billboard for Bloom grocery stores. The billboard not only looks mouth watering (probably not to those of you who are anti-meat people) but also smells like a juicy steak. The North Carolina billboard is getting all kinds of buzz not from how it looks but how it smells. The billboard emits a scent of charcoal and black pepper every day to promote the store’s new line of beef. It’s a creative idea that is catching more than Carolina driver’s attention. Brilliant.

Switch to Bikini

I’ve heard from a couple IFBB Figure pros that they will be making the switch to bikini. One of which has been top ten in the Figure Olympia. Any guesses on who we’ll see competing in bikini instead of figure?

Some women have asked me how that is possible… switching divisions. As an IFBB Pro you can choose what division you compete in as long as it’s not at the same show. So you can turn pro in Fitness and compete in Figure if you so choose. There have been many women do it and some have found success while others, well not so much.

Kim & Gunter Welcome Baby Jake

Kim Lyons is an IFBB Pro and known to many as a trainer on NBC’s hit television show, The Biggest Loser. Kim’s husband, Gunter Schlierkamp is also an IFBB Pro Bodybuilder and an actor. The happily married couple recently welcome their first child into the world. Jake Alexander Schlierkamp was born on June 3, 2010 at 3:30 am. Baby Jake checked into the world at 6lbs and 11oz. I’m told mom, dad and baby are doing well. Congratulations!

Dianna’s Monday Modeling Tip – Keep it Classy Ladies

Hello again everyone. This week’s tip is pretty simple but a good one… be professional! I say this quite a bit but I mean it in every aspect.

diannamodeling

Here’s some examples of being unprofessional, so stay away from these scenarios! When a spokesmodel goes out to work at events, tradeshows, shoots, etc., most likely there is going to be a party afterward.

What would you do?
A) Go out and enjoy the free drinks… end up getting drunk.
or
B) Take a pass on the booze and stay sober.
????

Remember, you’ll likely you will be working again in the morning time and alcohol has a huge effect on not only how you feel but how you will look the next day. Many times on the 3rd day of an event I have seen models show up an hour or two late. All because they had a little too much fun the night before.  If you are on the job and around the people that you are working with stay professional. It’s okay to go out for a little bit and have a drink (meaning one not ten) if you can handle it but don’t feel pressured to stay out all night. You’ll look and feel better the next day.

XOXO

Hardbody Hotties Rock the NPC Mile High

Wooooo did things heat up in the Mile High City today! The 2010 NPC Mile High took place in Englewood, Colorado and there were some hardbody hotties not only onstage but also in the audience. Lindsey Morrison took the overall bikini title and deservedly so. I’ll be shooting with Lindsey in my Denver studio tomorrow so check back for photos and a profile on her this week.

Sara Hurrle returned to the figure stage and picked up where she left off. She won the 2007 NPC Colorado Pro/Am Overall Figure title and the 2008 NPC California Figure Overall crown. She took last year off but was better than ever as she took not only her class but also the overall. She gave a shout out to her friends and trainer Kim Oddo. The win was well deserved and it was a pleasant change to hear a crowd roar with cheers and not boos when the winner was announced.

There were a number of IFBB Pros in attendance as well. Denver has become a mecca for the Hardbody women in the NPC & IFBB. Tanji Johnson was the guest poser and had a great turn out for her free posing seminar after the check-in on Friday night. Tanji told me the response she received from the women in Denver was great. Carol Semple was in attendance and is promoter her own show this fall in Loveland, Colorado. The Fitness Olympia champ is staying in great shape and still working out every day. Carla Sanchez celebrated her 40th birthday on Friday and was in attendance supporting a couple of her Performance Ready competitors. Camala Rodriquez was in attendance and had her swagger on. Look for Camala to take the stage again at the Dallas Europa and then head to her first Fitness Olympia in September. She tells me she is bringing a new routine to Dallas. Fellow IFBB Fitness Pro Bridgette Murray was in the audience cheering on a friend and client along with NPC Fitness competitor Lauren Niehaus. Look for Lauren on stage later this summer and Bridgette at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup. She’s staying in great shape and looked better than ever.

fitnessgirls
Lauren and Bridgette chill’n before the show. (iPhone image)

IFBB Bikini Pro Sonya Vecchiarelli was on hand to help with trophies and help out a couple clients. Sonya will be working the ISS Research booth at the NPC Jr. Nationals and look for her to make her pro debut at the Jacksonville Classic in August. Chaundra Tanji was cheering on a couple clients and tried her hand at emceeing the bikini division. She let the crowd know that Tanji would be the one to beat at the Olympia this year. We’ll see what Adela and the other ladies have to say about that come September. IFBB Figure Pro Heather Mae French made an appearance fresh off her California Pro Figure title. Her 12 year old daughter, Autumn, is now taller than her. Yes you read that right, Heather Mae has a 12 year old daughter.

A great show by promoter Jeff Taylor and if you’re thinking about making a move… Denver is one of the places to be for all things fitness, figure and bikini.

Remembering Amanda Savell

Two years ago today, we learned of top IFBB Figure Pro Amanda Savell’s death. She was a beautiful woman inside and out and although she is no longer with us, she’ll never be forgotten.

Rest in Peace Amanda.

In Love Wit Yo Booty

John Blu’s “In Love Wit Yo Booty”… not the most PC song out there but it’s catchy. You know how hard it is to get the booty right and keep it tight. Happy Saturday!

Lordy, Lordy Carla’s 40

A big shout out to the Performance Ready Team founder and coach Carla Sanchez. Carla has assembled a team of fitness, figure and bikini women who continue to rock the stage. The busy mother of two celebrates her 40th birthday doing what else? Watching over her competitors who will be competing tomorrow in the NPC MAX MUSCLE MILE HIGH in Denver. Carla and the PR Team are supporters of Hardbody.com and it’s much appreciated.

Happy Birthday Carla and many more to come!

2010 NPC Jr Nationals Update

Pam Betz is the leading lady when it comes to the NPC Jr. Nationals. She helps organize everything related to this fantastic event in Chicago. I spoke with Pam yesterday and she told me there has been a record number of entries for the women. The women will be competing in bikini, figure, fitness and bodybuilding on June 18 and 19th.

2010npcjrnationals

As of last night there were still some rooms available at the host hotel but when I called they informed me that it was VERY limited. If you haven’t booked for the host hotel, do so today or you’ll be looking for some place else to stay. The host hotel is attached to the venue and just minutes away from Chicago’s O’Hare airport. If you’re planning to attend make certain you fly into O’Hare and not any other Chicago airport or you will find yourself in a cab for a looooong time. I made the mistake once, but won’t do it again.

Visit npcjrnationals.com for more information.

IFBB Bikini Pro Monique Minton continues to collect belts but doesn’t bother taking names in her “other world”. Monique is an accomplished grappler who recently won yet another tournament. This time Momo headed to Ft. Worth, Texas where she competed in the expert division of Gi and No Gi (two forms of grappling). Don’t let the pretty face and bikini body fool ya, she’ll choke your ass out!

All Aboard The Cougar Cruise

Those of you who aren’t familiar with the term “cougar”, it’s basically a woman who prefers younger men. The exact age gap/difference between the male and female isn’t exact but think Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. The term still has negative connotations to it but there’s really nothing negative about it. Older men have been dating younger women for years and now women are making it acceptable to do the same.

USATODAY has a story about the cougar cruise, check it out here. What do you think ladies, would you go on a “cougar cruise”?

Photoshop – The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Adobe Photoshop, or simply Photoshop, is a graphics editor originally released in the late 80s and became the industry leader for image manipulation in the 90s. You’ll often hear people refer to photos being “photoshopped”. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad and often it’s just plain ugly. I’ve been using Photoshop since the mid-90s and the program has come a long ways since then. Photoshop users are able to do things that weren’t even thinkable in the beginning. The thing to remember is Photoshop is just a tool just like having an expensive camera or a fast computer.

Lately, more and more people are using Photoshop not as a tool to enhance images but rather alter them to a point that they are unrecognizable. Every photo in the magazines has some Photoshop work done to it, if it hasn’t it should. An image will need to have the colors slightly adjusted, the brightness/contrast altered or a stray hair removed. Someone who knows what they are doing will use Photoshop in a way that enhances the photo and doesn’t detract from it.

There’s a growing trend of photographs being manipulated in such a way that it’s not a true representation of what the person really looks like. That’s cool if you want to look like someone else and some of you might need it to ever get in a magazine. You may get the photo published and praised by your facebook “friends” but it’s not always a good thing. If you’re hired to do a modeling job and you look nothing like the images you sent, you’ll likely never get a call back from that company. There are some amazing photos floating around of models who are showcased in ads and magazine features but you have to do a triple take when you see that person in public. It may work for the short term but in the long run you’re not helping yourself to have any chance at a career.

When building a portfolio don’t rely solely on images that are photoshopped to a point where it’s not a true representation of how you look in person. If you have some that are high fashion or conceptually strong because of the manipulation then that’s cool. There are some photographers who do a great job with altering photos to the point where it enhances the image. The best example I’ve seen recently was an image of Erin Stern photoshopped to look like Wonder Woman by Scott Harben. Now THIS is a great example of how Photoshop is a good and done well. I could show you thousands of photos where Photoshop is bad and ugly but just visit any of the popular message boards and you’ll see more than enough.

erinstern

I spotted this image and it’s amusingly on point. It reads, “What’s the secret to my success? It’s Adobe Photoshop Day Cream”.

photoshop

A number of women are entering online modeling contests like the one FLEXonline.com is currently running. Remember when entering contests like this if you win you’ll be competing in person for the top prize. If your skin is blemished, you’ve had your sleeved tattoos removed or your butt jiggles more than a bowl of Jello you won’t win.

Think about these things when selecting a photographer to work with, submitting to magazines, entering contests and building a portfolio.
