Interview with IFBB Women’s Head Judge Sandy Williamson

A number of people have voiced their opinion on the new bikini division. That’s to be expected. I’ve voiced my opinions based on attending nearly every NPC National bikini show and every IFBB Pro Bikini show (except for New Zealand). Most of the things I’ve seen written online are based on hearsay and not from people attending the pro shows. One “industry expert” recently commented on a bikini competitor’s posing as “crass” but based the opinion by viewing photos online. I’ve mentioned a few times that you shouldn’t base opinions of the bikini division on photos. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but consider the source and what they’re basing it on. There are still a few people who aren’t fans of the new division but that’s to be expected. Figure wasn’t well received when it was introduced.

After the 2010 Pittsburgh Pro Bikini competition I went straight to the voice who matters most… IFBB women’s head judge Sandy Williamson. Sandy addressed a number of things related to the bikini competition. If you’re a competitor or a trainer, PLEASE pay attention to what she says.

Sandy talks about suit choice, presentation and what type of physique the judges are (or should be) looking for. At the end of the video IFBB Bikini Pro Nathalia Melo joins Sandy and shares why she (Nathalia) is the look for the new bikini division. Sandy also stresses the point about the division is new and they are still working through the criteria, just like they did in Figure. As of today, this is where the division is at and how competitors should prepare for it.

A big thanks to Sandy for taking the time to do this video and to J.M. Manion for helping arrange it to happen.

Well…I viewed the video, I actually LISTENED and PAID ATTENTION to what Sandy was saying. Very informative video. This could be the best nine minutes any bikini competitor and/or trainer could spend when it comes to how the division should be. Great video, Isaac!

  4. Carl says:

Thank you for posting this video, Isaac. Overall softness and roundness for some reason stuck in my head! I had the pleasre of meeting Sandy while working at the Tanji Johsnon’s Fitness, FIgure and Bikini Classic in Vancouver, Washington. She was there to head judge the the show and, let me tell you, what a gift to have her there! She helped a great deal during the fitness, figure and bikini rehersal and her knowledge and experience were a true blessing for us all. I learned a great deal from her and I hope I will be able to apply her direction to my work as a competitor, a trainer. and the judging coordinator for the state of Alaska. She is a great lady and I have great respect for her as a judge.

  9. Shawna says:

I watched this video. I want to compete in bikini and have no idea how to train for it. I saw your video with Nathalia before the show, (I subscribe to your youtube channel) but I would love to see her in action training. Also, maybe you could post some locations where good bikinis for this type of show are available. I am at about 17% bodyfat and I have seen different types of diets about the bikini division. I also am confused about how to lift if the muscle is less important in this division.???? Thank you for yout hard work!

  11. Isaac Hinds says:

    Shawna –

There is no one way to train for bikini. We’ll see what we can do with getting Nathalia training. We’re working on a few helpful links and resources for bikini competitors. Every body is different. You might want to look at a trainer to help you as well. The banners on the right side here have some good trainers to help you out.

We’ll continue to post more info and stuff related to bikini.
