Hardbody Music: Hello Good Morning

Well hello! “Hello Good Morning” is a catchy little tune by Diddy – Dirty Money.

Turn it up a little more.

NPC Competitor is a Kelly Ripa Look-a-Like

Kelly Ripa is the co-host of the popular morning talk show LIVE with Regis and Kelly. One of these Kelly look-a-likes is a NPC competitor. Can you spot which one and who she is?

I’ll give you a hint she’s blond.

Double Down, Then Double Over

Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is a mess. I was a fan of Kentucky Fried Chicken as a kid and occasionally I’ll crave a chicken leg from the Colonel.  They tried to go the healthy route with their grilled chicken and then they went the complete opposite way with their Double Down sandwich in a couple test markets.

They encouraged consumer’s to “UN-THINK” KFC with the grilled chicken and now it appears they’re committed to doubling you over in pain with a heart attack. The Double Down sandwich has bacon and cheese smashed between two piece of fried chicken.

Yes folks, it’s real… REAL GROSS and will be available in all KFC establishments.

This Weekend Around the NPC

This weekend a number of NPC events will take place across the country. I’ll be attending the NPC Northern Colorado event and you can see coverage on Bodybuilding.com. A number current IFBB pros once competed in this event. Might we see another future pro this weekend? Promoter and NPC Colorado Chairman, Jeff Taylor tells me the night show is already sold out and there’s a record number of entrants for tomorrow’s show. Those of you planning to attend but don’t have tickets can still see the show from the restaurant (St. George’s) next door. They will air a live video feed through their flat screens. Prejudging tickets are still available via Jefftaylor.com and might be your best bet at seeing the competition.

The Steve Stone Metropolitan show promoted by Steve Weinberger is always a great event. Look for a few bikini competitors to turn some heads this weekend. The event is held in conjunction with the NY PRO Fitness event. J.M. Manion will be the official photographer for this event. Visit bevfrancis.com for tickets.

NC Mid Illinois and NPC Cincinnati Bodybuilding shows will also be held this weekend. The Illinois show will take place in Ottawa and the Cincinnati show will be in Middletown, Ohio.

Dexter Jackson will play host to the NPC JAX Physique. The show is still fairly new to Jacksonville but they put on a great event. If you’re in or around Jacksonville, Florida check this show out tomorrow. For more information and tickets visit, jaxphysique.com.

Jessica Putnam – This is HER Story

IFBB Pro Jessica Putnam has a new video on the Optimum Nutrition Youtube Channel. She shares her story of overcoming an eating disorder and how finding the gym helped her. The camera movement is a bit distracting but the story is worth listening to.

Tanji Johnson Wears Multiple Hats

Preparing for a fitness competition is challenging. Preparing for one while co-promoting another is even more difficult, unless you’re IFBB Fitness Pro Tanji Johnson. Last weekend, Tanji wore a few hats throughout the day. Promoting a show it’s not as simple as putting your name on the poster. At any given time throughout the even you’d see her coordinating schedules, hosting a free rehearsal for the women the night before, putting out fires and jumping on stage to bust out a guest posing routine.  “It was EXHAUSTING but exhilarating,” said Tanji.

When asked how it was preparing for the NY PRO while promoting a show Tanji said, “To be honest, it was super tough balancing my contest prep with the promotion of such a big show. I basically ate 3 meals and got 3 hours of sleep for 3 days straight during this weekend. Fortunately, my routine is solid and I’m already in shape so those 3 days didn’t hurt me. It was important to prioritize my job as a promoter first to ensure success and now I had 5 days to rest and dial everything in so that I can try to win this show.”

Tanji wasn’t slated to guest perform at her own show. IFBB Fitness Pro Laura Mak was scheduled to perform but her father passed away and was unable to make the trip.

Check out the full results and photos from the event here. Congratulations to all the competitors and to Tanji for a successful event! Below are a few other photos courtesy of Tanji Johnson.

Cammon Signs with Optimum Nutrition

Two years ago, nearly to the day, I mentioned Rachel Cammon as”one to watch” here on hardbody. She went on to turn pro a few months later and has appeared in a few magazines along the way. I’m far from Nostradamus and Ray Charles could see her potential.

rachel6

She’s still finding her groove on the pro stage but that hasn’t slowed her down from finding success away from it. Yesterday, Optimum Nutrition signed Rachel to their athlete roster. When I spoke with Bob Corbett from Optimum he shared, “I actually wanted to get Rachel aboard with us a couple of years ago, but at the time it didn’t work out.  So I was very happy to see her e-mail in my inbox saying she was available and would love to be with ON/ABB.  Rachel has a fantastic look, and awesome personality, two things I look for in an athlete to join our team.  Plus, she’s a super fan of ON/ABB.  Great combo to have, and we’re VERY excited to have Rachel join our team which includes fellow IFBB Figure Pro’s Jessica Putnam, Alicia Harris and Hazal Nelson.”

Look for Rachel at upcoming appearances throughout the year with Optimum.

NY Pro Fitness Preview & Predictions

This Saturday, thirteen IFBB fitness pros will take the stage at the Tribecca Performing Arts Center. The event is held in conjunction with the NPC Steve Stone Metropolitan, a national qualify show.

nypro

The odds-on favorite going into this show has to be Tanji Johnson. She was runner-up to Adela Garcia at the 2009 Olympia and notched a third place finish last month at the Fitness International. Will she leave the Big Apple with another pro win? Most likely but she’ll need to be spot on with her physique in this line-up. There are a number of women who could give her a run for her money in the two-piece swimsuit round.

Trish Warren displayed an improved physique at the Fitness International and secured her spot in the Olympia line-up by placing 4th, one spot behind Tanji. She actually beat Tanji in the physique round by five points at that show. Trish’s routine still isn’t at the level of Tanji’s but it’s drastically improved. On paper, Trish is a solid second battling it out with Tanji for the win.

The third and final Olympia qualifying spot could go a number of ways. Roll the dice on this one but you might have the best luck with your money on Bethany Wagner or Tina Durkin. Bethany’s physique has great structure and when she comes in conditioned she’s in the top call-out, no question about it. She didn’t have quite enough time to prepare for the Fitness International and finished in 11th place. Look for her to bring an improved physique and if she can avoid any wardrobe malfunctions in the routine round she will be a contender. During her Fitness Olympia routine, Bethany’s top wasn’t secure and after a couple of slips forced her to exit the stage.

Tina Durkin will most likely be one of the top names called out for the physique round and rightfully so. She has improved her physique over the last two years and if she’s conditioned will do well here. Tina’s routines have also improved and will be in the money if she’s mistake free during her performance.

Amy Villa-Nelson will be returning to the stage for the first time since the birth of her daughter. It’s been a couple years since Amy competed but she’s been a performer all her life. She’s a very animated competitor with incredible flexibility. She won’t be the girl with the biggest muscles on stage but she’ll certainly have the biggest smile.

Canadian’s Allison Either and Slyvia Tremblay will look to improve upon their pro debuts at the Fitness International. It will be a challenge for them to crack the top five in this line-up but anything is possible.

Kayde Puckett will return to the same stage that she earned her IFBB Pro Status. The Fitness Nataionals are held at this venue and it proved to be lucky before but can it again? She’ll look to improve her Fitness International showing. Kayde’s routine needs a bit of refinement but it is packed with a ton of strength moves.

Kristina Rojas has been training under the watchful eye of Ms. Fitness Olympia and Fitness International Champ Adela Garcia. Look for her to be a top five contender in this line-up. She placed 4th at the end of the 2009 season, just out of a qualifying spot at the Ft. Lauderdale Cup. She brings a high-flying, energetic routine to the stage and will be in the mix if her physique is up to par.

Lauren DeNapoli will be making her pro debut at this event. She won the medium class at the 2009 Fitness Nationals and lost the overall title to Kayde Puckett. The two will square off again this weekend. If Lauren can bring a conditioned physique, especially from the back, she could be in the mix. She’ll have her work cut out for her but she’s found success on this stage before and could do it again.

Stacy McDowell (formerly Simons) finished third at this event in 2007. Last year she competed in this contest and afterward announced her retirement. Retirement was short lived and we’ll see her take the stage once again. Stacy has some of the craziest flexibility you’ll ever see. Her routines are entertaining but her physique has kept her from a top spot the last couple years.

Julie Costa will be making history as the first bikini pro to compete in another division. Julie achieved IFBB Pro status by placing second at the 2009 Team Universe contest. It will be interesting to see how she stacks up against this competition.

Amanda Marinelli secured IFBB Pro status on this stage during the 2008 Team Universe event with a second place finish. Her best placing to date was 11th at the 2009 Europa Supershow and will have a battle cracking the top five here. Amanda’s biggest challenge to date has been her conditioning in her lower body.

My Top Five Predictions:
1. Tanji Johnson
2. Trish Warren
3. Tina Durkin
4. Bethany Wagner
5. Kristina Rojas
