Rock’n Riley Returns

IFBB Fitness Pro Erin Riley has established herself as one of the rocker chics in the industry. No, not because of any wild nights or destroying hotels rooms but rather her routines. She always performs to some type of kick ass rock song and it suits her well. The amount of strength she brings to the stage matches the music she uses in her routines. Last year at the Orlando Pro she finished just out of the money in fourth place. Erin was sidelined with an injury for most of 2009 but she’s back and gives everyone a sneak peak at her routine.

From the looks of things she hasn’t missed a beat and we can expect another powerful, rock’n routine from her in Orlando.

Supplement Review: Gaspari Nutrition MyoFusion

I’m on the go all the time and it’s a constant challenge to get meals in and healthy ones at that. While I try to get whole foods in for most of my meals I rely on shakes to keep my stomach from going ballistic. I’ve been told countless times, by nearly every supplement company that they have the best tasting product. Shocking, right? That’s to be expected from any good representative of a company but is it always the truth? Nearly every weekend (from March to November) I’m at a bodybuilding/fitness competition and I sample a number of products at these events. Many are good, some are pretty crappy but few are great.

When I was told that Gaspari Nutrition’s MyoFusion was one of the best tasting shakes, I thought here we go again. I recently tried the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor and was pleasantly surprised. When it comes to making shakes, I prefer to use a blender but that’s not always available. Some protein powders end up clumpy and don’t mix well when in a shaker bottle but that’s not the case here. The MyoFusion mixed well in a shaker bottle and the blender. My preferred method of use… 10oz of water, 2 scoops of protein, 12 ice cubes and blend for 2 minutes. It blends perfectly and more importantly tastes great. Another thing I noted is that if you let it sit for a few minutes you won’t see anything sink to the bottom. Many protein shakes will settle and when you get to the bottom of the cup you’ll wonder what the hell you’re looking at.

Gaspari’s MyoFusion gets the Hardbody Seal of Approval.

Rest in Peace Tony Nowak – Creator of the Arnold Classic Jackets

I red via Lonnie Teper’s Facebook page that Tony Nowak, the man behind creating the Arnold Classic jackets passed away. Lonnie shared, “Terrible news…Tony Nowak, one of the most generous human beings I’ve ever met, passed away while on vacation in Italy with his son.”

Tony Nowak was the man behind the Arnold Classic jackets from the beginning. I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Tony at the 2009 Arnold Classic. He was a kind man who always took the time to chat.

Rest in peace Tony, your work will never be forgotten.

Pregnancy with Andrea Taylor

While in Los Angles, I had the opportunity to shoot with NPC bikini competitor, fitness model, personal trainer and mom-to-be Andrea Taylor. The last time we shot it was the day after the NPC USAs and she was a blast to work with. The setting was a little different this time and she had a new addition to her body but it was every bit as fun. Andrea is 8 months pregnant and defines “fit pregnancy”.  As you can see from this sample shot she looks great!

Dre’s back with another hardbody Fit Pregnancy contribution…

Houston, we have a problem! The baby is breech and the little stinker just refuses turn over. Where this stubborn behavior comes from… I have no idea! My vision of a natural childbirth is dangling before me as I do everything my doctor suggests to make him flip. Ever been poked in your pinky toes with needles? It’s actually not that bad! I’ve been going to acupuncture and it’s amazing how much he responds to it but I can still feel his head above my belly button! So for now, the question of what kind of delivery I’ll have is still up in the air. Only about 4% of babies are breech but Tripp still has time to flip before we are forced to have a C-Section. Please pray that he does!!

The good news is I feel great! I’m still working out (despite the funny looks I get) and I don’t feel huge at all! Something worth noting: There was a study done about pregnant women and exercising. Because the hardbody way of life involves exercise, our babies have to “fight” for their nutrients. When women who exercise throughout their pregnancy suddenly stopped, they had abnormally large babies. This was due to the fact that the babies were so used to fighting for their nutrients, even after the mom stopped working out, the babies would still do that and ended up huge! So, keep up the movement preggos!

I had the pleasure of shooting with Isaac this past weekend and had a blast- as always! We took some very cute prego pics and I got a nice little workout (and a few “wows” from Isaac) with the lifting shots we took. Isaac got a glimpse of my “I have to prove I can still do this, that and the other thing, even though I’m pregnant” attitude- good for a laugh that’s for sure! As we were shooting, beautiful hardbodies were coming in to get their makeup and hair done and as I admired their rockin’ bodies, I would look down at my belly and smile. This pregnant body isn’t as bad as I was expecting! Sure, my mother patted my butt the other day and asked in her very kind way “Mi ija, are you swollen?!” Thanks mom. But despite her caring comment, I feel quite comfortable with my 24 pregnant lbs and can’t wait to see the shots Isaac took!

Safiya Johnson Switches to Bikini

IFBB Pro Safiya Johnson achieved IFBB Pro Status at the 2008 Team Universe event in the fitness division. She went on to compete in the 2009 Atlantic City Pro Fitness where she finished 10th. Safiya was the 2003 NPC Teen National Fitness Champ and after years of competing in fitness, she’s decided to switch to bikini. I caught up with Safiya days out from the Orlando Show of Champions and here’s what she had to say…

Where are you living? Columbia, South Carolina

Why the switch to bikini from fitness? I have been competing in fitness non-stop since the age of 16. I guess you could say it has been my passion/obsession for over the past 8 years. While I will always have a deep appreciation for the sport of fitness and its athletes, I feel like I am better suited for bikini at this present moment. As a fitness competitor I have always struggled to keep up on a muscular level. I am naturally a smaller petite woman and putting on size has not always been the easiest thing for me. I still have a lot of developing to do before I can become competitive within the sport and I dont mind taking the time to develop those areas. I am not saying that I am hanging up my dancing shoes forever because it is certainly in my heart to perform and being on stage is where I know I belong. I do however feel the need to take a step back and put alittle time into “ME” and certain areas of my life that need my attention.

I feel that bikini is a great opportunity to showcase my athletic physique in its most natural state. I am excited to see the various shapes and sizes within the division and am confident that I will bring a good mixture of fit and feminity.

Why debut at this show in bikini? Honestly, the timing was right. I would of loved to have participated in the very first pro bikini show but New Zealand just wasnt an option for me. I do most of the funding for my shows so I have to pick and choose wisely and the Europa Show of Champions seemed like a good show for me to get my feet wet in bikini.

Some people will say, well Safiya fitness is on the decline why wouldn’t you compete in fitness? Fitness may be on the decline in numbers, but certainly not in the caliber of athletes. The beauty about this sport and the IFBB is that there are different divisions and as an athlete, I have the freedom to choose. It is not unsual to see an athlete compete in fitness one year and maybe figure the next. I am choosing what is best for me at this present moment and right now that is bikini. Each year, as my physique continues to change I will reassess my place within the sport and make the best decision.

What can people expect to see from you on stage in Orlando? I am really excited about Orlando. Even though I have graced the stage many times, I have never competed in bikini. But not to worry…there will be no “deer and headlights” here, lol. It will certainly be different experience for me, but I am confident that I will rock the stage and have fun with it. People can expect to see a petite yet curvier Safiya than they have seen in the past

Good luck Safiya!

Hardbody Music: Big Girls Don’t Cry

Fergie is one hardbody singer. Her “Big Girls Don’t Cry” is a little sappy but I still dig her voice.

Walk With Watson – “Live Like You Were Dying”

IFBB Figure Pro Andrea Watson made her pro debut at the 2010 Fitness International. She was slated to make her second pro appearance next weekend at the Orlando Show of Champions however those plans have been put on hold. Walk with Watson on her latest journey.

watsonwalk

As I was driving to work this morning, and listening to my favorite country radio station, the song “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw came on the radio. I know that many of you are gagging right now and can’t get past the country music thing, but the words of the song speak volumes. Take a look if you get a chance at the lyrics here.

Last year when I was going through a rough time in my life I often listened to this song to keep me in a positive mind-frame. Today, as I once again am facing challenges, I think about the message and remind myself that every day is a gift and that we should live each day like it may be our last. Are there things that you’ve been putting off because you have tomorrow? Is there something that you’ve been dying to try but haven’t made the time to do? Are there people, family, or friends in your life that you have not forgiven because of petty things that have happened in the past? Forgiveness is a blessing in disguise. If you found out you only had a short time to live would you have any regrets? Why wait for bad news to “Live Like You Were Dying?”

I have been incognito for awhile and have not responded to any emails, Facebook comments, etc. I have been in and out of the doctor’s office dealing with some medical issues (back, stomach, some too personal to list) and have been having a really rough time. Ever since my surgery last year I have not been 100%. I have not been able to train like I did the first time around. My body and mind have taken a beaten and I’ve really been struggling. I’ve been down, down, down and not in a positive place. My doctors want me to let my body rest and put training and competing on hold. I’ve really been struggling with their advice but know that it’s the best thing for me right now. I once again am turning to my faith to help me get through this time.

Some people may say that I’m throwing everything away and just to push through it. However, we are all guilty of judging a book by its cover. Well folks, this cover may look good on the outside but the inside needs some work. I am not looking at this as a challenge; this is an opportunity. I am not giving myself a pity party or looking for sympathy by far! I don’t need any of that. Judge me if you want…believe what you want to believe…say what you want to say….but please respect me as I would you. I am continuing to stay positive and am asking God for strength.

Will I compete again? When and if the time is right. The champion will always live inside of me so don’t count me out.

I want to thank my manager and my coaches for their continued support. Also, to all of my family, friends, and supporters thank you for always encouraging me and believing in me. Many blessings to you all.

Erin Stern’s Operation Orlando

IFBB Figure Pro Erin Stern finished in the runner-up position at the 2010 Figure International. She’ll be back on stage next week looking to notch her first pro win. Can she do it? Follow along with Erin’s Operation Orlando.

To cheat or not to cheat…

Four weeks have passed since the Arnold, and a lot has changed – after the A, I ate a whole pizza, was asked to compete in the New Zealand Pro the week after, started more sport-specific training, and signed a lease on an apartment 100 miles away from where I’m currently living!  Well, after the pizza I started my depletion/prep for the NZ show, drove to Miami for an expedited passport, and… we just couldn’t get the travel details together in time! That night I had to reassess my training plans and refocus prep to the Europa. Back to carbs, creatine and crucial weight and track workouts!

Fast-forward to today. I have been moving stuff a little bit at a time and training 2-3x a week in Tampa. I’m sprinting more on the track, power-lifting and really lovin’ the workouts! My training has been tougher, I’ve been eating more – and I feel ready to compete… right now!  The show is about two weeks away and I’m faced with the dilemma of having a cheat meal or not. Looking at my progress pictures, I decided to take Saturday off and up my calories for the day.  It shouldn’t have been a tough decision if I had just listened to my body (note to self) :) .

Last year, I got into “cardio pre-contest mode,” and at the end of the season I was about 5lbs lighter on stage than I should’ve been. I think it was from being on the forums, on facebook and other sites where other competitors were getting ready for shows.  I would read updates like, “it’s 5 a.m. and I’m up for my first round of cardio,” or “so-and-so diets for 12 weeks prior to a show.” I felt like I should be doing tons of cardio, too!  I didn’t take into consideration that I had been doing shows all year, and that instead of all that cardio I should be in the weight room working harder on improving the weak points in my physique!

There is no coasting into a show – we all have to make adjustments based on how our physiques currently look, and hopefully these adjustments will lead to improvements.

Time will tell…

G’s Tip of the Week – Watch out for “Zero”

gtip

Don’t think that just because it says, Zero Fat, Zero Carbs, Zero Saturated Fat and Zero Calories it’s truly Zero everything! I know how many people consume products thinking they are completely guilt free, think again There is a loophole in the system, Go Figure!!!

Products with less than 0.5 grams of fat, trans fat, carbs, calories, fat per serving are allowed to list their content as zero. The problem with this is if you eat more than one serving of a product with just a small amount of trans fat, you may end up consuming a significant amount.

You know that “No Calorie, No Fat Butter Spray”? Oh yes, thought it was too good to be true? It sure is!! That entire spray bottle has more than 900 calories and 90 grams of fat!!

Tip: Look for the words “partially hydrogenated” on ingredient labels. This means there are some trans fat present, even if the listed content is zero.
Have a great week!

Do you pay attention to men’s shoes?

Most women love their shoes but what about when they are on a man? Ladies do you pay attention to what type of shoes men wear? In Amanda Latona’s FLEX magazine column she is anti-flip flops. When asked about it in California she nearly flipped over the thought of a man wearing flippy-flops.

Dianna’s Tip of the Week – Cold Hard Cash

Dianna “DD” Dahlgren is back with her tip of the week.

diannamodeling
Hey everyone! I hope you’re doing great! For this week’s tip I want to talk about good ole CASH!

I never carry cash on me and always use my credit cards… unfortunately I have run into many problems because of it. Taxis, stores, supplies, etc… Sometimes these services require cash only. So now when I get ready for a booking, I ALWAYS make sure I have cash. Make sure to save your receipts for reimbursement!!
;)

Have a great week everyone!

Trish Warren Quits Weight Training

Branch Warren was in Boulder, Colorado guest posing while his wife Trish competed in the NY PRO Fitness over the weekend. When I spoke with Branch I mentioned that Trish’s physique looked improved from last year. He told me the funny thing was that she’s doing less weight training than ever.

After her second place finish in New York, Trish did an interview with RXmuscle.com‘s Dave Palumbo. During the video interview she tells Dave the same thing. “I just completely quit weight training because the Olympia I was too muscular,” said Trish. Keep in mind that Trish has been weight training for years. She’s genetically gifted (or cursed depending on your point of view) and able to hold muscle easily. She goes on to share that she will be guest posing nearly every weekend from now until the Olympia and watch out for the Warren’s in Las Vegas this fall.

Hardbody Music: Need You Now

Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” is currently sitting in the top ten on iTunes store, not too shabby of a tune.

Tanji Johnson Takes the Big Apple

Tanji Johnson was the favorite heading into the 2010 New York Pro Fitness competition and last night she delivered. She rocked the house with a kick ass routine that secured the win. She was challenged by Trish Warren in the physique rounds but in the end Trish had to settle for the bridesmaid spot once again. It as the same position Trish was in last year at this contest when Shannon Meteraud took top honors. Bethany Wagner showed an improved physique and was in the money once again. Tina Durkin narrowly missed the top three and had to settle for fourth. Rounding out the top five was Allison Either from Canada. Allison brought a much improved package to New York than that of Columbus. She was second in the routine round, behind only the winner Tanji.

Hardbody Music: Ladies and Gentleman

Welcome to the show…. Please come inside. “Ladies and Gentleman” by Saliva is a great warm up tune to get you in the mood. The song is set to a video compilation of UFC Heavyweight’s Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin. They will square off in Las Vegas on July 3rd.

NY Pro Fitness Prejudging – 2 Piece Swimsuit

The IFBB Pro Fitness division is comprised of two rounds, the two-piece swimsuit round in the morning and the two-minute fitness routine in the evening. This morning thirteen women took the stage at the Tribecca Performing Arts Center and it looks like the opening round is belonged to Trish Warren. Trish was on top of her game and when called back out for the final comparison she was in the middle. Can she nail her routine and leave the Big Apple with a win? We’ll have to wait and see but it won’t come easy. Tanji Johnson and Bethany Wagner are on her heels. Bethany was much improved at this show and the extra time since the Fitness International suited her well. Tanji wasn’t as sharp as we’ve seen her in the past but she was still in the money. Look for these to be your top three ladies at the end of the show tonight.

That’s not to say it’s a lock because in a few hours they will take the stage and perform their fitness routines.

Tina Durkin, and the Canadian duo are in the mix for the top 6. Alison Either and Slyvia Tremblay (the two women from Canada) both debuted last month at the Fitness International and are improved from that show. Who finishes higher will be a toss up but they’ll need to pull a better routine than Trish, Tanji or Bethany for any hope at a top three spot.

Check back later tonight for full results.

Fitness Olympia Champ Carol Semple Stay’n Fit

IFBB Fitness Pro Carol Semple was in attendance last night at the NPC Northern Colorado competitor check-in. Carol was the 1997 Fitness Olympia champion and considered by many to be a pioneer in the routine rounds. Many of the moves you see women perform in today’s fitness routines originated with Carol. Most notably the legs over the head pushup.

carolsemple

1997 Fitness Olympia Champion Carol Semples stay’n fit.

Carol is keeping herself in great shape and still follows the industry. I asked her how she was keeping fit and she told me she’d taken up training with fabric, the kinda stuff you see in Cirque Du Soleil. It sounded incredibly difficult but pretty cool. She’s also keeping busy with her company Infinite Supplements and promoting the NPC Warrior Classic, a new addition to the Colorado competitive scene.
