Gia Allemand Makes it to the Final Three on The Bachelor

Gia Allemand was one of the first winners of the NPC Bikini division. She won the short class last year at the Arnold Classic but lost the overall to former UFC Octagon girl Ali Sonoma. One year later, Gia is in the national spotlight as one of the women on the popular ABC show, THE BACHELOR. Tonight’s show was full of drama and in the end, Gia made it one step closer to winning Jake’s (the bachelor) heart. She’s in the final three… will she make it all the way to the end?

Here’s a look at Gia one year ago at the Arnold Amateur Bikini event.

2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover Goes to Brooklyn Decker

Congratulations to Brooklyn Decker for being named the 2010 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Cover Model. It’s one of the most celebrated magazine covers and last year’s issue reportedly sold over 4 million copies. The website devoted to the new Swimsuit Issue is pretty bad ass. It has a ton of behind-the-scenes videos, interviews and more. Some of the photo shoot locations are amazing. Props to Sports Illustrated for going all out on their promotion and marketing the crap out of this issue. I wonder what their budget is… hmmm.

sicover
2010 Sports Illustrated Issue.

Yes, the Cover Model works out. Check out a couple of Brooklyn’s tweets regarding working out and running on a treadmill.

“Anyone run on a treadmill w/a tv? It’s the WORST! I get nauseas & if I turn it off, it’s just my reflection bouncing on the screen. Grr.”

“This playlist definitely got me through my workout today.. I really don’t know how people exercise without iPods.. without it, Im useless.”

I remember getting the 25th Anniversary issue (1989) with Kathy Ireland on the cover and thinking how cool it would be to photograph the women in it. While I’m not shooting the cover of Sports Illustrated, I’m pretty fortunate to shoot some of the fittest women in the world.

Keep your eye out for the FLEX swimsuit issue in the coming months. It’ll feature some of the top hardbody ladies in the fitness industry.

How to Talk to Women

This is funny. Check out this site where “the modern day Romeo” Mehow tells guys how to talk to Women. “Do you have trouble flirting? Do you always seem to strike out at bars, at night clubs.. in the dating scene?” HAHA! Classic video.

Dianna Dahlgren’s Monday Model Tip

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is doing amazing!!!

diannamodeling

Tip for this week:
People always say when you come to a photo shoot to have no makeup on whatsoever. But actually I think you should wear one light coat of mascara, it helps the lashes and the top coat of mascara stick much better.

Have a great Monday!!

Dianna

Walk with Watson to Columbus… Round Two

IFBB rookie Andrea Watson shares a bit more of her journey to her pro debut in Columbus. The months have become weeks and the weeks are becoming days until the big day.

andreawatson

Whew, almost another week has come and gone… 28 days and counting. I was relieved to find out this week that my abdominal scan showed that after six months I continue to be cancer free! Back when they removed my appendix in July they (the doctors) called to let me know that they found cancer in my appendix and that they would need to perform a series of tests to ensure that it had not spread. So after a few months of poking, sticking, drawing blood, getting ct scans done, and 24-hr urinalysis tests the results all came back negative. However, I was told that I would have to go back every six months for a few years for more tests to make sure the cancer was not metastasizing.

For awhile there I was severely depressed and feeling sorry for myself and I turned to food for comfort and gained all of my pre-competition weight back plus some (hence – the 3 a day cardio sessions). I couldn’t work out for eight weeks and I thought it was the end of the road for me… but then I decided to snap out of it and live each day like I had previously and told myself that I was going to leave everything in God’s hands. My faith, family, and friends got me through the difficult time and I was most thankful to receive all negative results! Faith will get you through everything and anything. I started a journal on Siouxcountry.com during this time and try to update it regularly.

I am trying to keep a very positive attitude and I continue to see good results with my body on a daily basis. Somehow, I am starting to get my abs back, my booty is shrinking by the week, and I am getting leaner. My biggest struggle continues to be juggling training, working, and giving my family the attention they deserve on a daily basis. I’m finally getting used to the fish and asparagus diet… actually I look forward to eating the fish now because I am starving! When I get my new diets I open them up and think to myself, “what do you mean chocolate cake and lasagna are not on my diet?”… then I remember that was just the dream I had… I would say that 50% of my day right now… ok, maybe 75% involves fantasizing about the foods I would like to eat… eggplant parmesan and lumpia (Filipino eggroll) are my absolute favorites…and anything that involves sweets…I wonder if they have a restaurant nearby in Columbus that I can go to after the show and get some eggplant parmesan…

With all the news of competitors getting signed with supplement companies I think to myself, “why can’t I get signed with some sort of food company…maybe like Hardee’s how they have those sexy models coming out eating a big ass cheeseburger and ketchup dripping down the sides of their mouths…oh yeah, that’s what mama’s talkin’ bout!” Hey, it could make a good case for making sure you eat enough protein in your diet….lol, just another dream. In the meantime, I’ll be anxiously waiting by the phone waiting on Hardee’s to call me up for their next commercial…..tee hee.

Liberate Your Mind

RAHHHHH! Disturbed’s ‘Liberate’ is a kick ass song for the gym or to get amp’d up.

Your Reputation

I posted this a couple years ago but it’s worth revisiting. Give it some thought to start your week.

This Year’s Super Bowl Ads

Super Bowl 44 is in the books with the New Orleans Saints beating the Indianapolis Colts 31-17. The Super Bowl is the one television event where most people look forward to the advertisements as much as they programming itself.

Overall I thought the ads were lackluster and nothing stood out as being memorable. Budweiser dominated with the most spots during the big game but most didn’t live up to previous years’ creative. Here are ads that caught my attention for various reasons…

Doritos “Tim”

Admittedly, I laughed but because it was so dumb. Really…Dorritos in the gym?

Doritos “House Rules”

This one is funny and cute. Kids and puppies usually get people’s attention when used right.

Denny’s “Screaming Chickens”
This screaming chicken spot reminds me of the Budweiser Wassup commercial but hey everyone can go to their nearest Denny’s on Tuesday for a FREE Grand Slam breakfast. I find perplexed, screaming chickens amusing for some reason. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been eating chicken every day for the last few weeks.

Careerbuilder.com “Casual Fridays”

Disturbing to see out of shape men in their whitey tidies but an accurate depiction of what most corporate men look like and why we don’t want to see them this casual.

Dockers “Men without Pants”

What is it with dudes without pants? Did the movie The Hangover inspire ad people to take this direction? There’s an amusing line in the movie where one of the characters is walking around without pants. Funny in the movie but again disturbing in this commercial.

Michelob Ultra “Little Bumps”

Nothing says working out and staying fit like a cold beer. Lance Armstrong pimp’n beer? A bit of a stretch.

Snickers “Game”

“You’re not you when you’re hungry”. I kinda like it. The best part is Betty White saying, “That’s not what you’re girlfriend says.”

Did you have a favorite commercial from this year’s Super Bowl?

Give this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt some thought. I dig it.

Momo Falls to The Not so Mean Dean

Dean bested Momo in their prediction battle for UFC 109. Despite only getting 28 percent of the votes in today’s Hardbody prediction poll Dean proved the voters wrong. He went 7-2 while Momo went 5-4. Momo went out on a limb with a few fights and it ended up costing her the win. Despite Dean’s smack talk and presently inflated ego, my money is on Momo to choke him out should the two ever get in the ring. Check back in a couple weeks to see if Dean can keep his streak alive as they make their predictions once again for UFC 110.

Momo gets quote of the night when she said, “Paulo Thiago hands down! The guy fights criminals in the favelas in Brazil, while Mike Swick eats cheeseburgers at Dave and Busters”. Thiago choked out Swick for the win.

MMA Predictions with Momo and Dean – UFC 109

Our resident MMA gir,l Momo has submitted her UFC 109 predictions. She’s going out on a limb the main fight and has some hilarious comments on the others. Dean Donlon, the man in charge up the contest section at Bodybuilding.com, thinks he has the winning picks.  It’s a UFC prediction throw down… MOMO vs DEAN. Dean’s already talking smack, “Bring it on MOMO!” Who will fair better? You can catch UFC 109 tonight on Pay Per View. Check back tomorrow to see how Momo and Dean did.

deanmomo
POLL CLOSED – Hardbody Voters call it…
Momo – 72%
Dean – 28%

Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman
Momo: I’m gonna call Mark Coleman because he is the underdog and like on Rocky 3 the underdog always wins.
Dean: Couture! Straight up! He is a little over a year older but physically he has a few years of youth on Coleman. Coleman is an old man and has lost his power over the years and that is all he ever had. Couture will finish him in the late second round by submission (choke)

Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen
Momo: Nate Marquardt, I trained with him…he is tough. Cheal is a crying baby… Paulo Filho put him in an arm-bar, he tapped and said he didn’t.
Dean: Marquardt, Nate is physically stronger and more well rounded, watching Nate fight is always a pleasure and he trains to win. If you have ever seen footage of Nate training you would not even consider Sonnen. Nothing against Sonnen but he is just not at the skill level of Nate the Great. Marquardt – 1st round KO (hopefully a flying Knee)

Mike Swick vs. Paulo Thiago

Momo: Paulo Thiago hands down! The guy fights criminals in the favelas in Brazil, while Mike Swick eats cheeseburgers at Dave and Busters… and only fought posers.
Dean: Hard to say but I’m not a fan of Swick, I think Thiago will finally put an end to Swicks un-entertaining fights. I give Swick props, he has some big name wins under his belt but that will end with Thiago. Just as most of Swicks fight I see this going the distance. Thiago – split decision.

Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller
Momo: Demain Maia on this fight, as long as he uses Brazilian Jiu-jit-su. I bet he is gonna get a rear naked choke or guillotine.
Dean: Should be a great grappling match, if either one comes out swing they will lose, there is not much stand up game in this fight. With that said it will be a great fight for real MMA fans who appreciate a well matched fight. Maia in my opinion just has the upper hand in BJJ and will win this fight. Maia – 1st round submission.

Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg
Momo: They both look older than Randy Couture and Mark Coleman, but ill pick Matt Serra on this fight, because Frank Trigg was already done 2002.
Dean: LOL – will be a good fight but I’m not a fan of either. Both will come into this fight well conditioned and I say it will start with a slugfest. After both take too many punches in the head Trigg will shoot and from there Serra will utilize the fact that he has far better BJJ skills and finish the fight. Serra – late first or mid second round submission

Mac Danzig vs. Justin Bucholz
Momo: One more time, they gave Mac the weirdo another dead chicken. If he doesn’t win this one, he should sign up for one of MTV’s reality shows! Mac for this fight.
Dean: Both are on losing streaks and honestly this fight is worthless. I’m going Danzig split decision

Ronys Torres vs. Melvin Guillard
Momo: I’m hope’n for Melvin, because I don’t wanna see him on celebrity rehab. Melvin.
Dean: Torres – better BJJ, Guillard’s only chance is a KO in the first minute. Torres – Submission Early second

Phillipe Nover vs. Robert Emerson
Momo: Phillipe, better jiu-jitsu
Dean: This could be a sort of comeback fight for Emerson, I think he will come in better prepared. Emerson – split decision

Brian Stann vs. Phil Davis
Momo: Brian because my dad was also in the U.S. military.
Dean: Phil Davis – Unanimous, dont think Stann will stop the streak of Davis Prediction: Davis by decision

Erin Stern’s Countdown to C-Bus – More Than Physical

Another week has past and IFBB Figure Pro Erin Stern shares her second part in the Countdown to C-bus.

erinsterncbus

It just isn’t enough – the extra hours in the weight room, early morning cardio, or even the weeks of dieting. It isn’t enough to win a show. Often times in figure, we talk about bringing “the total package” to a show. Going into my second year of competing, I now realize that the total package is made up of more than just the physical appearance. It is stage presence, confidence, posing the body in the most flattering way and making the presentation look comfortable and natural.

Let’s face it, we all train to win. No matter what a competitor says, she doesn’t enter a show in hopes of 10th place. But… do we all go into the show believing that we will win? Do we lie in bed at night, visualizing the trophy presentation – down to the last detail?

Last year, I couldn’t see it. I didn’t believe that I would win, or that I could win. I had no stage presence. In looking at some of the pictures, my smile is strained and I look a little frightened. Track and field prepared me for grueling workouts, taught me to love the discipline, and how to shape my body…but, it taught me nothing about strutting on the stage in heels. So, for the next month, I am working on conditioning myself mentally for the show…bringing that “total package.”

I realize that our sport is subjective, and as competitors, the final outcome is out of our hands. But when you give something 100% – with body, heart, mind, and soul – how can you lose?

Friday Funny – Pants err Brees on the Ground

I received this in the spirit of this weekend’s Super Bowl between the Colts and the Saints. Indiana resident and luggage carrier husband to IFBB Pro Amy Lee Martin, Doug Martin shared his version of “Pants on the Ground”. If you’re not familiar with it here’s the epic American Idol audition song “Pants on the Ground”.

Hey, how did you get those shoulders?

fitwithfelicia

This is a question I am commonly asked as I am sure many other figure competitors and gym going hardbodies are asked as well. “How did you get those shoulders?” Well, not always an easy question to answer but what I often tell people while genetics do play a small role… hard work and consistency is KEY. First and foremost, make sure your diet is clean and conducive to your ultimate goals. Although some might think protein is key when trying to build those muscle groups, you must also make sure you are eating an adequate amount of calories in the form of carbs and fats as well. Second, you MUST train shoulders correctly in order to round and shape the shoulder. What I see too often in the gym is incorrect technique and form. Many times women use too much trapezoid (trap muscle) and not enough delt muscle. An example workout that I have been doing for years to help build my shoulders:

1. Dumbbell shoulder press – 3 sets of 15 reps
2. Side laterals – 3 sets of 15-20 reps
3. Front raises – 3 sets of 12-15 reps
4. Rear delts – 3 sets of 20 reps

You always want to make sure you are targeting every part of the shoulder (front, side and rear) to make sure that you build and create a complete shoulder. If you are trying to build I would recommend adding a second shoulder day at the end of your week targeting any weak or lagging parts you may have.

Happy Shoulder Training!!!

xoxo
Felicia

MMA with Momo

Welcome our newest Hardbody contributor… IFBB Bikini Pro, top fitness model and MMA practitioner Monique “Momo” Minton.  Momo will be sharing some insight, tips and predictions on the world of MMA.

momomma
Hello Everyone!

I am Monique Minton, a MMA fanatic, lover and practitioner.  I train every day and that is where most of my cardio comes from. You burn crazy amounts of calories during grappling or sparring. I decided to venture into Brazilian Jiu-jit-su (BJJ) and muay thai because I wanted a different method of cardio, a more fun approach. I didn’t realize I would get addicted, find such passion for a sport and actually suceed in such a displined art. I love MMA because it is a nice way to exercise and also learn something very useful. As my coach says “fighting solves everything.” hahahaha just kidding.  But seriously, it is very good for women to learn self-defense.

Many women don’t know what MMA is or what it stands for. They tend to think it’s cage fighting and a blood sport where they put two people inside a cage to beat each other as much as they can. Those who judge the sport this way miss why MMA is the most fun, exciting and fastest growing sport in America.

The sport is so intriguing and so technical. What other sport can a 45 year old man like Randy “The Natural” Couture, fight with guys half his age (Brandon Vera) and still win? Luck?  No. Technique!  If I were you… this Saturday, get a group of friends together and visit a place where they are showing the UFC Fights. You’ll see some of the best athletes in the world compete and have fun in the process, at least I know I will.  Check back with my predictions and thoughts on the UFC 109 fights!

Ossssaa! <3 momo

Lofty Goals Set for Tucson

This weekend. one of the first NPC shows of the year takes place in Tucson, Arizona. It’s also the first show promotion for Stryker Salman (Strykerx.com) and he shared some of his lofty goals with the Arizona Daily Star today.

The article says, “And if it goes well, Salman hopes to launch an intermediate competition with at least 500 athletes in Tucson this summer. That would be a pro qualifier that would draw athletes from all over the United States.”

Call me crazy but that seems a tad absurd considering the NPC USAs and NPC Nationals set record numbers last year with around 400 competitors. If I sound a bit skeptical it’s because I’ve been involved in bodybuilding show promotions before and it’s not as easy as some might think. The saying you have to crawl before you walk is applicable when it comes to promoting a bodybuilding competition, at least in my opinion.

Stryker is also promoting the Arizona Pro Show that will be held in a couple weeks. I was in Phoenix earlier this week for a FLEX magazine photo shoot and did some scouting around the area and will post more info on that this weekend.

If you’re in the Tucson area check out the show and let us know how it goes. I’d love nothing more than to be proven wrong and see this show do well and bring in the 150+ competitors it’s expecting for the first show.

WHAT: The Desert Muscle Classic – NPC National Qualifier Men’s and women’s bodybuilding, fitness, figure and bikini divisions.

WHEN:
Saturday, February 6, 2010
Prejudging: 10 a.m.
Finals: 6p.m.
