Pregnancy with Dre – The Beginning

Welcome NPC Bikini Competitor and Fitness Model, Andrea “Dre” Taylor’s first of many contributions during her first pregnancy. I’m sure you’ll find Dre has quite the personality and is much more than a pretty face and a rock’n hardbody. Enjoy.

dretaylor

A few weeks after the NPC USA’s I noticed I was retaining a lot of water- and my boobs would not stop growing! I didn’t go overboard after the show did I? What the heck have I been eating? Crazy thoughts ran through my head until my husband suggested taking a pregnancy test. Well…I guess we celebrated that 4th place win a little too much!! What a surprise and a blessing! We weren’t necessarily doing much to avoid baby making so we were very happy!

I’m sure many of you Hardbodies have been there, done that! And hats off to you girls! I wonder if the weight gain first hit you like it did me. You find out you’re pregnant and you’re so very happy, but then you realize the weight you’re gaining is not coming off anytime soon. In fact, it’s staying around and multiplying! That hit home for me at first. We spend so much time looking down at that scale obsessing over those numbers getting lower, or at least staying the same, I wasn’t necessarily prepared to see the opposite. As Hardbodies we have that disease, you know? If that scale moves up just a little, we’re focused on setting that thing straight immediately! The head game we play reminds me of the “Competitive Obsession” shoot Isaac did with Tracey Greenwood. Don’t you feel crazy sometimes? Now imagine playing that head game and being pregnant at the same time! Always talking to yourself, pushing yourself  “just one more minute…faster you wimp…don’t even think about touching that cookie…you have to be better” Ugh it makes me tired! The minute I started gaining weight I felt like I had failed in my training and my diet, like I should be working harder, but then the angel on my right shoulder told me to wake up and realize that I was growing a human being inside of me! How awesome is that?!

Instead of making sure my body was on point, pulled in and tight, I had 9 months to enjoy life the way we can only enjoy it in the off season. Let’s not go overboard, we know that doesn’t mean we get to sit on the couch and eat Bon Bons, but it does mean that we don’t have to follow that extremely strict diet. We get to eat cheese!! Yogurt!! And all the fruit we want!! (Seriously- how exciting is THAT!?) And that’s encouraged when you’re growin’ a baby!

So let’s face it, the numbers on the scale are only going up from here. Our job as a Hardbody and as a source of life is to make sure they go up at a healthy level. We still need to make good choices about what goes in our mouth. And working out? You and I both know you couldn’t pay us enough to stop working out! That doesn’t have to stop – in fact you’ll be amazed at how your body will tell you when you should slow down. You’ll probably fight that a little because we have that competitive spirit, but eventually you’ll have to give it up and slow down. I’m sure you’ll remember the day it happens just like I do!

Open Door for IFBB Fitness Pros

Pro Fitness has been talked about more in the last week than the past few months combined. It shows there’s a passion for fitness out there and if everyone works together there can be a revitalization of the division. Any IFBB Fitness Pros that are interested in helping the cause have an open invite from the NPC NEWS to contribute. Here’s a post by J.M. Manion via SiouxCountry regarding the topic.

I also want to throw this out to any & all IFBB Pro Fitness competitors – anybody that wants to contribute an article(s) to the NPC News about NPC and/or IFBB Fitness, please let me know. The door is open. And remember to keep it positive. This is to help promote the sport & bring it back to its former glory.

This is the Now Generation

I’ve been listening to the Black Eyed Peas’ “Now Generation” lately during cardio. The lyrics are timely and pretty spot on with the mentality of most today.

Some of the Now Generation Lyrics:
I want money
I want it want it want it
Fast internet
Stay connected in a jet
Wi-fi, podcast
Blasting out an SMS
Text me and I text you back
Check me on the iChat
I’m all about that h t t p
You’re a PC I’m a Mac
I want it…

Myspace in your space
Facebook is a new place
Dip divin’ socializin’
I’ll be out in cyber space
Google is my professor

Checkin my account
Loggin in and loggin out
Baby I want it..
Now!

This is the now generation
This is the generation now
We are the now generation
I want I want I want it now
I want the cold hard cash
I want I want I want it now

And I just can’t wait
I need it immediately
And I just can’t wait
I want it immediately
Cause time can’t wait and
I sure can’t wait
I ain’t got no patience
I sure can’t wait

Discipline: Do you have it?

Check out the latest from our resident contributor, IFBB Figure Pro, fitness model and personal trainer Felicia Romero. Felicia will be competing next week at the Phoenix Pro and two weeks later will be on the Figure International stage at the Arnold Classic Weekend.

fitwithfelicia

As I come up on my last week before competing in the first show of the season I find myself excited and eager to get on that stage. But, this last week for me is the easy part. I’m not running on much in the food department but I am running on pure adrenaline and DISCIPLINE to get me through this last week. Don’t’ get me wrong…it has been a long 12 weeks with my fair share of ups and downs and questioning whether I can get through it.

Trying to balance workouts, opening up a business, training clients all while trying to have a normal loving relationship with your fiancé is not always the easiest thing to do when you are in training. Months and months of the same routine and regiment all for 5 minutes onstage…but for me it is a lot more then that 5 minutes onstage, it is setting a goal for yourself and following through and putting in that work and effort. DISCLIPLINE AND PASSION has been the bridge between my goals and accomplishing those goals.

Without DISCIPLINE and PASSION for what you are doing, whether it is training for a competition, gearing up for a marathon or trying to lose 50 lbs you must first have the character to get out of bed, commitment that moved you to take action and the DISCIPLINE that enabled you to follow through.

Xoxo

Karen Mullarkey Appears on Arizona CBS show

Props to IFBB Figure Pro Karen Mullarkey for getting herself some exposure in the Arizona market. She challenges one of the CBS morning show hosts to a push-up contest as well as educates the viewers with a few fitness tips. I can’t say that I’ve seen the dips done on/with another human…interesting.

A good example of how to market and promote yourself in your area.

Hardbody Broadcasts live on Ustream.tv for the Arizona Pro

We’ve signed up with Ustream.tv and will be testing it next week in Arizona. You’ll have the opportunity to interact live with a variety of Hardbody women throughout the weekend. If it works out we’ll do more of it in the future and at the Arnold Classic. ** Note we are not talking about broadcasting the shows – we are talking about interactive interviews with hardbody women and possibly photo shoots.

Ustream’s one-to-many live interactive video encourages broadcast-to-viewer and viewer-to-viewer interaction, empowering a much more engaging experience for everyone involved.

This video provides a bit more about the technology and it’s founders.

Stay tuned for more info on this in the coming days.

Phoenix Pro Show to Webcast for 20 Bucks

I tweeted yesterday that I’d heard the IFBB Phoenix Pro show would be webcast for $20. Many people responded saying it was too much and wouldn’t purchase it. Some of the responses I received were..

“Why should I when the Arnold and Mr. Olympia contests offer FREE webcast!?”

“$20 seems silly when the Arnold is offered for free….”

“Um no. $20 for webcast? This is 2010.”

Is $20 too much to charge for a webcast?

Hey, twenty bucks isn’t bad when you consider they are asking $198 for a seat in the second row to watch the finals.

There’s a new website for the show posted at phoenixproshow.com. I know promoting a show isn’t easy however it seems many of the details surrounding this show are coming in at the last minute. I hope it’s a success and they sell the crap out of the event in person and online.

We’ll be there representing and tweeting live from the event.

Social Media a Fad?

Thanks to Dean from Bodybuilding.com for passing this video along. It’s a little outdated already but you’ll get the idea. Interesting facts.

IFBB Fitness Pros Where Ya At?

There’s a good discussion taking place on the forum, Siouxcountry.com. Props to J.M. Manion for starting the dialogue regarding this topic. The Phoenix Pro show is one week away and there’s only one fitness pro who has sent in her contract to compete. The deadline is Monday and I hope more people are planning on competing in this event. I understand that it’s not always easy to do a show and many competitors need a rest. When every fitness pro has that reason or something similar to not do a show, guess what? You’re going to see fewer IFBB fitness shows. The fitness division is my favorite to watch and photograph, I’d love to see more fitness routines and not less.

Last year the IFBB Pro League removed the 45-second routine and the one-piece suit round for pro fitness. That was one of the reasons competitors gave for not doing more shows… the expense of two routines and two suits. Clearly, at this point it appears those were excuses.

It’s annoying when I hear competitors complain yet they don’t take steps to help themselves. How do you expect the media to promote you and a show when you don’t send in your contract until the last minute? Who knows maybe there will be 15 fitness pros competing next weekend but sadly few will know much about it. I understand the rationale some give… I don’t want to send my contract in if I’m not totally sure I’m doing the show. Ok, gotcha but turns out you don’t just whip together a routine in a week and you’ve probably been dieting for several, or at least I’d hope you would.

Come on IFBB Fitness Pros… get in the game before the game is gone.

**Note as of 02/12/10 there are four competitors in the pro fitness division

1 Grishina, Oksana
2 Johnson, Tanji
3 Marquez, Nita
4 Rodriguez, Camala

The Hoodie-Footie inspired Deranged Easter Bunny?

Awe it’s one “big hug you can wear” and it’s made from “marshmallow soft fleece”…The Hoodie-Footie.

The Hoodie-Footie reminds me of Ralphie’s gift from his aunt in The Christmas Story.

Thanks to IFBB Pro Teresa Anthony for sending the link to the Hoodie-Footie.

You have a hardbody… so what?

I get asked on a weekly basis if I know any companies looking to sponsor models/competitors. Truth is, yes I do. A number of supplement companies approach me asking for my advice and input on competitors and models in the industry. Every company is looking for something a little different. Who I recommend varies on a number of things but usually I can assure you they have more to offer than a pretty face or rock’n hardbody.

The Arnold Expo is around the corner and more than 30 women have contacted me looking for booth work. Some of you might be great competitors but that doesn’t make you a great booth worker. Others of you may never crack the top ten in a competition but I’d recommend you to a company. Why? The reasons vary but it starts with defining what makes you more than a pretty face or woman with a hardbody. Lost as to where to start? Here’s a few things to consider.

First let me give you a brief background on myself so you know where I am coming from. Over the years, I have built relationships with supplement companies, magazines and industry decision makers to know a little bit about what they are looking for. I worked for one of the biggest ad agency groups in the world at the beginning of my career. I also headed up an interactive department for a small design firm before starting my own business 8 years ago. I’ve worked with multi-million dollar accounts to non-profits with no money. The size of an account doesn’t matter.

Every brand (in this case yourself) starts with asking relevant questions and having a strategy before you begin. Apply this line of thinking if you want to start to make money and be relevant in the fitness industry.

Ask yourself…
• What makes you different from other models/competitors?
• Do you have something unique to offer a company or magazine?
• You work out, compete or model and have a great physique. Ok. Now what? Thousands of men and women do but that doesn’t entitle you to anything. Why are you relevant?
• You want to work a booth… Ok. Why should I hire you?

Branding and marketing yourself is a HUGE topic but don’t be overwhelmed. Start simple… before looking for work in the industry consider the questions I mentioned above and have a clear answer for them. Develop a strategy and plan to make yourself more than just another pretty face or hardbody.

Hardbody Investigates… Decaffeinated Coffee

A new feature to Hardbody.com… Hardbody Investigates. There are a number of things that leave people scratching their head wondering what the…?! We’re going to tackle some of these topics with a little help from a few Hardbody investigators. Do you have a topic you’d like us to investigate? Email me and we’ll see what we can do.
investigate

Have you ever wondered how decaffeinated coffee is created and what is meant when a label reads “Naturally Decaffeinated”? We have…

As many of you might know, caffeine is the most consumed drug in the world and coffee is the main supplier of this substance. Caffeine is naturally abundant in more than 60 plants.

Caffeinated coffee usually comes from a bean called Arabica, while most decaffeinated coffee comes from a bean called Robusta.  A Robusta bean is used to create decaffeinated coffee because it has a more robust flavor and helps keep the final product tasting great after the extraction process.

There are a few different extraction techniques used but each contains the basic following steps:

1.      Soaking the coffee beans in water to dissolve the caffeine
2.      The water substance is then drained from the beans and the caffeine is strained from the water using solvents
3.      After extracting the caffeine from the water the decaffeinated water is introduced to the batch of beans again to re-absorb the flavors.

The solvents typically used are methylene chloride or ethyl acetate. The most widely used solvent is ethyl acetate, a substance found in many fruits. When a label reads “naturally decaffeinated” it is referring to the solvent, ethyl acetate, being used. Since ethyl acetate can be found in nature companies can call it Naturally Decaffeinated even if the process or substance is not natural.

In the past, Methylene chloride received a great deal of attention after it was found to be an animal carcinogen when inhaled.  When animals ingested the substance through drinking water there were no adverse effects so the government allowed companies to continue its use.

An interesting fact:
Caffeine removed from products such as soda or coffees are used in the manufacturing process of medicines and sodas.

“less than 5 percent of the caffeine found in cola drinks comes from the kola nut, and many of the popular “high caffeine” soft drinks do not contain kola nut extracts at all. The caffeine content of soft drinks is primarily if not completely from the addition of caffeine extracted from decaffeination processes.” – http://recipes.howstuffworks.com

Moderation is key when it comes to anything processed from its natural state.

G’s Tip of the Week: Unique Wedding Planning

gtip

As I prepare for my upcoming wedding I wanted to share a fun and creative tip on bridal registries. Of course choosing a bridal registry should be fun and exciting but what if you really don’t need “stuff” and would rather have people contribute to your honeymoon!? I have found a fun, creative and practical way for guests to be able to contribute to your special day! Being active and wanting memorable experiences over “stuff”, you can now set up registries, such as TravelersJoy.com, where guests can contribute towards your honeymoon activities! Guests can give gifts such as parasailing, dinners, couples massages, drinks by the pool, excursions and even new luggage!

What a concept and what a perfect idea for us active ones looking to get outdoors and enjoy activities!! Thought this was a creative and fun concept and right up our alley! :)

Michelle Obama ‘Let’s Move’ Campaign Tackles Childhood Obesity

This morning Michelle Obama went on Good Morning America and spoke about a new initiative regarding childhood obesity. This morning President Oboma will create the first-ever federal task force on childhood obesity. Good Morning America has the full story that mentions, “President Obama also plans to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act, the first lady said, and is proposing a $10 billion budget increase — $1 billion a year for 10 years — to help provide nutritious school lunches to those who qualify.”

The First Lady Michelle Obama’s interview with Robin Roberts:

From the Let’s Move Web site:

Childhood obesity or excess weight threatens the healthy future of one third of American children. We spend $150 billion every year to treat obesity-related conditions, and that number is growing. Obesity rates tripled in the past 30 years, a trend that means, for the first time in our history, American children may face a shorter expected lifespan than their parents.

We need to get moving. Join First Lady Michelle Obama, community leaders, teachers, doctors, nurses, moms and dads in a nationwide campaign to tackle the challenge of childhood obesity. Let’s Move! has an ambitious but important goal: to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation.
