Is quinoa better for you than rice or potatoes?

The Diet Doctor on Muscle & Fitness Hers web site was asked, “I went to a restaurant last night and with my chicken breast came a grain called quinoa on the side. The waitress said it’s supposed to be much better for you than rice or potatoes. Is that true? And if so, is this something I should be cooking at home?”

Great question but you might be wondering what the heck is quinoa?

The Diet Doctor explains…

Although it looks like a grain, quinoa is actually a seed of the goosefoot plant, and is a relative of spinach. It has been cultivated in the Andes Mountains for thousands of years. Because it is physically similar to grains and can be ground into flour, it’s often called a pseudocereal. Quinoa is a far better choice than just about any whole grain you can name. The main reason for this is because most grains are not complete proteins.

Read the full answer and explanation on muscleandfitnesshers.com, it’s an interesting read. Do any of you use quinoa in your diets?

Next Up… Kentucky Pro

This weekend will be the final IFBB show of 2009. The IFBB Kentucky Pro Muscle Figure is shaping up to be a very competitive event. There are currently 17 pros in the show but I look for a couple more from Sacramento to make the trip. I’m not 100% for sure but don’t be surprised if you see Julie Ann Kulla and Cheryl Brown jump into this show. Cheryl placed second at the Sacramento Pro and Julie Ann was fourth. Should they enter this event they’d definitely be two of the favorites after their Sacramento showing. There are three Olympia qualifying spots up for grabs this Saturday.

Stay tuned for more updates this week as we head into the season finale of the 2009 IFBB schedule.

**UPDATE** I can confirm that Cheryl Brown and Julie Ann Kulla will both be competing in this show. Also competing, will be Australia’s Rosa-Maria Romero. That takes the show to 20 and there may be more by the time the official list is announced.

Mindi Smith Wins Sacramento NPC Figure

Congratulations to Mindi Smith for taking the overall figure title at the NPC Sacramento last night. We told you about the first time NPC competitor last week. If you missed her interview check it out here. Mindi had a rockin suit, was very polished in her presentation and with a bit of fine tuning in the next two weeks she’ll be a contender at the NPC Nationals. She’ll have a much tougher time in Florida but look for her to be in the mix.

Today’s Song of the day, ‘Smooth Operator’ by Sade is dedicated to all those smooooooooth cats out there who know how to break out the lines on the ladies. I saw a few “smooth operators” in Sacramento and it took notes. :)

Friday Funnies with Fitness Olympia Champ Adela Garcia

IFBB Fitness Olympia Champion, Adela Garcia is always good for a laugh or three. In this edition of Friday Funnies with Adela she talks about her two “kids”. Take a minute to get a chuckle with the champ.

Hardbody at the Sac

Here’s a few more photos from last night’s competitor check-in at the Sacramento Pro. Promoters John Tuman and Ted Williamson are doing a great job of taking care of the competitors, their staff and the press. A big THANK YOU to both of them for their hospitality and generosity. The show tonight will without question be sold out.

I had a chance to meet Raechelle Chase and she’s very beautiful, plus how do you NOT love an accent like that? She’ll turn some heads and make some noise in her first pro show. She was joined by fellow IFBB New Zealand Pro, Moe El Mousawwi here in Cali.

There are two Nunns in the IFBB Pro League and no, they are not related. Last night Kristin Nunn met pro bodybuilder, Ed Nunn for the first time. The two shared stories about people asking them if they were related or married. Ed is a cool guy who won last year’s NPC Nationals, look for him and Kristin to do well here.

Cheryl “Brownie” Brown is competing in her second IFBB pro show and to think one year ago, she was asking legendary IFBB Pro Bodybuilder, Rich Gaspari if he was on BODYSPACE. True story. Cheryl’s first NPC National show was at last year’s Nationals. Fast-forward one year later and she’s considered one of the top competitors in this show. Not too shabby for a mother of three, eh?

Live From Sacramento

HARDBODY.com is in Sacramento! The weather was a little overcast and rained on and off today. Unfortunately, that put a damper on some outside shoots we had planned. Chatted with Ana Tigre and Teri Turner a bit in the hotel lobby. Teri is looking forward to finding the nearest Chipotle with her iPhone app (one which I have used and like). Kristin Nunn is hilarious. We rapped about a number of things and she is ready to get into the top three. This was her pro debut last year. Danielle Kifer tells me she feels great and is ready for her debut. The defending champ, Huong Arcinas…. Wow. Those counting her out might be wishing they hadn’t tomorrow. Huong is rocking a bit longer hair (no wig) and is in shape. She’s ready to defend her title.

IFBB Bikini Pro, Dianna Dahlgren is in the house and looking great. Hopefully the weather clears up so we can shoot before the weekend is over. IFBB Fitness Olympia Champ, Adela Garcia is in attendance and looks better than ever. The chica is in town (we’re in Sacramento not San Francisco Adela) working for her sponsor, GNC. Stop by the booth and see not only her but also her fellow IFBB Pro Sonia Adcock. Sonia is also looking great and the two were last spotted causing trouble at a nearby CHEVY’s restaurant.

The crew from FLEX magazine is here. Check out FLEXonline.com for the contest photos as it happens tomorrow.

The athlete’s check-in begins at 6pm PST. We’ll be down there covering the event and will report back after that.

Update – Sat with Adela and Sonia at check-in. Those two are funny lil ladies. I’ll post a couple videos of Adela cracking jokes. Some of the women look great, others look like they got hit by a truck. You can never gauge what a woman will look like on stage by what they look like at check-in. Some women have no make up on and totally depleted. Others are upbeat and cheery.

It is going to be a fun show. Any number of women could be in the mix for the Olympia qualifying spots. We’ll be heading over to the prejudging in the morning and will pick up the reports there.

Poll: Who Will Win the Sacramento Pro Figure?

Last year, Huong Arcinas won her first IFBB Pro Figure show. Will she successfully defend her title or will someone else step up and win their first pro show? Huong is the only one with a pro title under her heels going into this contest.

Shannon Dey has taken things up a notch this year and really done a tremendous job with helping women reach their goals. FLEX Interviews Three Heading to Sacramento

FLEXonline.com caught up with Teri Turner, Kristi Tauti and Meriza DeGuzman as they head into this weekend’s IFBB Sacramento Pro. Tauti is always the quiet humble little lady while Meriza isn’t afraid to speak her mind in the interview. Turner doesn’t give herself enough credit heading into her pro debut.

Meet Ms. Mindi Smith

Mindi Smith is locked and loaded for her first NPC Figure competition, this weekend’s NPC Sacramento. I caught up with Mindi on the heels of the show and she was kind enough to share a bit about herself. This is one California girl you won’t soon forget.
mindi

Name: Mindi Smith

Born/Raised in: Saginaw, Michigan

Currently Live in: Los Angeles, CA

What’s been the best part of living in California? I love the weather and it’s so beautiful! You have the ocean, mountains, valley, and an amazing climate all rolled into one state!

What made you move out of Michigan? I couldn’t bare the cold winters any longer and had wanted to move somewhere warm. I ended up in Florida!

What’s your favorite sport to participate in? Throughout school I was into Track & Field and was always competitive. I loved the adrenaline rush you get before they fire the gun!

Favorite sport to watch? Football

College or NFL? College

Favorite team? Ohio State

Whoa, wait. You’re from Michigan and you’re a Buckeye’s fan? Ha. My Dad is from Ohio and roots for them so I back him up and take the slack from all the Michiganders after me! :)

You’re a liscened real estate agent, right… Do you miss being in it? I have my license in Florida and California.  I do miss how the economy was during the boom a few years ago!

This weekend you will be competing at the NPC Sacramento. What made you decide to compete in the NPC?
I competed in my first show for the WBFF in September of this year which gave me the itch to push myself farther and be the best I could possibly be.  As a result, that lead me to compete in the NPC.

mindibox
Watch out for a determined Ms. Smith.

Did you ever consider competing in fitness? When I was little I was involved in dance and gymnastics, but that was long long ago.  I have thought about possibly competing in fitness, but it would take a lot of work to see if I could pull off those incredible moves those girls do on stage!

You’ve enlisted the help of trainer Kim Oddo for your prep. How important has it been to have him assist with your prep?
I was referred to working with Kim when I had inquired about possibly competing in the NPC.  I have to say, meeting Kim has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life and it has just started!  He’s an amazing guy who is so educated and well known in the industry, I couldn’t have asked to have met a better person to guide me in the right direction and help me be my best.  He has taken all the headache out of everything and it has been smooth sailing since starting our journey and I’m so excited to see what the future holds for us!!

Will you be competing at the NPC Nationals in a couple weeks? Well, I have to place well at the NPC Sacramento Show to qualify for the NPC Nationals, but if it all goes successfully you’ll be seeing me there for sure!

You’ve done quite a few things in the fitness industry. What advice do you have for other women who are looking to get work or involved in the fitness modeling biz?
I have been involved in the fitness industry for some time now and have done quite a few shoots for fitness magazines, videos/DVDs, and infomercials. Getting your face out there and networking, networking! Networking is a big part of growing as a fitness model!

You mentioned videos. You have your own YouTube channel and on there is a video fo you and fitness model, James Ellis. Do you think you can bench more than him? Haha! James is a great friend of mine and he’s been putting some extra hours in the gym lately.  I’ll definitely put up a good fight, but in the end I think James would kick my butt!

How important is it as a model to have good images in your portfolio? Having a strong portfolio of fitness pictures to use to promote yourself is very important.  You should take note of different fitness photographers you admire and try to network with them.

mindiad

Anyone you want to give a shout out to? I want to give many thanks to Kim Oddo for everything he’s done for me.  He’s gone over and above everything I had ever dreamed of and I am so very thankful.  He’s truly a genuinely good person and I will be forever grateful!  I can’t wait to go out there and make him proud!!

Thanks Mindi and all the best this weekend in Sacramento. If you’re like to see more of Mindi, visit her BODYSPACE page.

Ask 2009 Figure Olympia Winner Nicole Wilkins-Lee

Fans can now interact with IFBB Figure Olympia winner, Nicole Wilkins-Lee on the Muscle & Fitness Hers’ forums. A dedicated thread devoted to your questions to Nicole has been set up on the site. Nicole will also be having her own column in M&F Hers starting in the March/April issue. Check it out, post your comments, ask your questions and interact with the champ.

You may want to ask her for her Super Bowl picks. She and Fitness Olympia champ, Adela Garcia, were the only ones to predict a win for the Yankees when asked by FLEXonline.com.

Overall Team Universe Winner Michele Pome Disaqualified

I received official word from the NPC that the original women’s bodybuilding heavyweight class winner and overall winner, Michele Pome has been disqualified from this year’s Team Universe.  As a result of this disqualification all competitors move up one placing in the heavyweight class. Unfortunately, there is NO overall winner declared at this contest. This also results in no female bodybuilder being eligible for IFBB Pro status from this contest.

Revised Heavyweight Class results from the 2009 NPC Team Universe.

Meet the Ultimate Body TV Reality Show Judges

I’d love nothing more than for the world of fitness to get more exposure and if a reality TV show helps then I am all for it. That said, the Ultimate Body Reality show doesn’t appear to be one of high production value, at least not yet.

Wanna meet the judges? Well you don’t really get to meet them per say but rather watch them spring out of a limo and have the executive producer fumble their names.

Between the trailer and this “meet the judges” piece, I hope there is more to this production than what we’ve seen thus far. Any hardbody peeps try out for this event last month?

NPC National’s Numbers on Record Pace

I checked in with NPC National’s promoter Pam Betz to see how things were looking for the upcoming competition. Pam tells me there’s currently 330 women and close to 200 men who have sent in their entry forms. The 330 is a combined number including Figure, Bodybuilding and Bikini. This is shaping up to be a HUGE event and one that will certainly produce a few future stars.

Bikini competitors don’t forget, the overall NPC bikini winner will be featured in an upcoming issue of Muscle & Fitness Hers, along with a chance to grace the cover. This is a huge opportunity for all NPC bikini competitors. If you haven’t sent in your entry to compete now would be a good time to do so. More information on this opportunity was posted here.

The show takes place on November 20-21, 2009 in Fort Lauderdale. For more information on the contest visit, nationalbodybuilding.com. We’ll see ya there!

Will you be competing or know some one who is? Give them a shout out in the comments below.

Katrina Hodgson and Karena Dawn are two personal trainers out of California who have teamed up to form ToneitUp.com. The duo has their own Youtube channel with instructional videos as well as a blog that is fun and easy to navigate. You may recognize them as they’ve both appeared in numerous fitness publications. I like their site and its fun approach to fitness. Check out their site and tell ‘em HARDBODY send ya.

Sacramento Saturday… A Hardbody Takeover

This weekend’s NPC / IFBB Sacramento show will be one of epic proportions. Co-promoter for this event John Tuman tells me we there will be around 200 NPC competitors after cross-overs. The Figure competitor numbers were  so large that there will now be six height classes instead of four. Competitors from ten different states will make the trip to compete this weekend. Add in the nearly 50 IFBB pro competitors and you’ve got yourself a big show. We’ll be there covering all the action starting on Friday.

Tickets are still available but if you’re planning on attending this one, it would be wise to get them now as it will certainly sell out. For more information visit npcsacshow.com.

Bodybuilding.com Conducts Voluntary Nationwide & International Recall of 65 Dietary Supplement Products

The latest press release regarding Bodybuilding.com‘s ongoing cooperation with the FDA.

BODYBUILDING.COM Is Conducting a Voluntary Nationwide and International Recall of 65 Dietary Supplements That May Contain Steroids
Company Contact:
1-866-236-8417
service@bodybuilding.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Boise, ID – November 3, 2009 – As part of its ongoing cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”), Bodybuilding.com, LLC (the “Company”) announced today that it is conducting a voluntary nationwide and international recall of all lots and expiration dates of 65 dietary supplement products (the “Recalled Products”) described on the attached list, that were sold through the Company’s website, www.bodybuilding.com.

The FDA has informed the Company that it believes that the Recalled Products contain ingredients that are steroids. Specifically, the FDA has advised the Company of its concern that the Recalled Products may contain the following ingredients that are currently classified, or the FDA believes should be classified, as steroids: “Superdrol,” “Madol,” “Tren,” “Androstenedione,” and/or “Turinabol.” While the Company has not had an opportunity to independently confirm the FDA’s concerns that the Recalled Products in fact contain these ingredients, the Company is undertaking this voluntary recall in an abundance of caution.

Acute liver injury is known to be a possible harmful effect of using steroid-containing products. In addition, steroids may cause other serious long-term adverse health consequences in men, women, and children. These include shrinkage of the testes and male infertility, masculinization of women, breast enlargement in males, short stature in children, a higher predilection to misuse other drugs and alcohol, adverse effects on blood lipid levels, and increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.

The Company has not received to date any reports of adverse events in connection with the Recalled Products. Because of the possible harmful effects of using products containing steroids, the Company is cooperating with the FDA to conduct a recall of the products the FDA has identified as containing steroids. Prior to agreeing to carry the Recalled Products, the Company received assurances from all of the manufacturers of the Recalled Products that these products were properly classified as dietary supplements in compliance with federal law, meaning that these products did not contain any unlawful ingredient. Customers who have any of the Recalled Products in their possession should stop using them immediately and contact their physician if they have experienced any problems that may be related to taking one or more of the ingredients listed above.

Any adverse events that may be related to the use of the Recalled Products should be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online [at www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm], by phone [1-800-FDA-1088], or by returning the postagepaid FDA form 3500 [which may be downloaded from www.fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm] by mail [to MedWatch, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787] or fax [1-800-FDA- 0178].

The Company is committed to providing accurate information about its products. The Company is working voluntarily with the FDA in this recall process.

Consumers should return any unused products purchased on the Company’s site to the Company. For instructions on how to return Recalled Products please call (1-866-236-8417) or e-mail (service@bodybuilding.com) the Company.
