Women in Mixed Martial Arts… Where does it belong or does it?

The popularity of mixed martial arts continues to rise and it’s including more and more women. Women are not only watching the fights but also participating in them. I’ve talked to a number of women who are taking some form of MMA training and they love it. The MMA world definitely isn’t for every woman though. No, some women cringe and can’t stand watching MMA, much less participate.

Last Saturday, the lone Ring of Fire female bout was one of the best of the night. The two women fighting were better technical fighters than most of their male counterparts that night. I’m not sure if it was a better fight because the women appeared to have no over inflated egos to over-compensate for or because it isn’t what I’m used to seeing. It’s not every day you see two women beat the hell out of each other. The women I spoke to in attendance had varied opinions on the topic. Some were inspired and others were horrified.

What do you think… Should female mixed martial arts be embraced and promoted? An on-going discussion is whether there should be professional fighting for women. Is it something that has a place?

NPC & IFBB Spottings at MMA’s Ring of Fire

Denver’s Ring Of Fire (a mma event – like the UFC but much smaller) is gaining popularity with each event. I photographed the event and in between fights I spotted a number of NPC competitors as well as a couple IFBB pros in the house. NPC figure competitors Sara Hurrle and Jaime Meade were ring side enjoying their first live fights. Hurrle has been practicing gymnastics from time to time with fitness routine legend, Carol Semple. Hurrle will be making the switch to fitness next year. Meade has her sights set on Jr. USAs or Jr. Nationals for her next figure show. She place third her class at the 08 USAs and Jr. Nationals. Former NPC competitor Brooke Paulin was in the house with her husband. Brooke has taken some time off to have a baby and is considering competing again. Brooke took third in fitness at the 2005 Team Universe. NPC Figure competitor Brooke Hougue is living in Colorado again. She placed 5th in her class at the 2007 NPC USAs. Shelley Hillesheim took the national NPC level stage by storm in 2008. She was a ring girl for this event and looked great. Joining her in the ring was IFBB Figure Pro Liza Kampstra. Liza and Shelley could be seen posing for photos throughout the night. Bronco’s NFL running back Andrea Hall was in attendance and Kampstra seized the moment to get a photo with him.

I chatted with NPC Fitness competitor Rachel Patton a bit and she tells me NPC Jr. Nationals is her next competition. She’ll be competing in fitness again, looking to improve on her 4th place finish and leave Chitown with a pro card. IFBB Figure Pro Heather Mae French was in attendance just weeks out from the Arnold Classic. Heather looked like she could step on stage that night and one smart competitor who doesn’t fluff up in the “off-season”. I’m sure there were a few more npc females in the house that I missed. As you can see Colorado is becoming a hot spot for top notch NPC and IFBB competitors.

If we were giving a seminar to women wanting to be more fit, what area(s) would you feel comfortable discussing?

Changing behavior, mindset, and self body-image by educating them on “pumping” their emotional muscles which are the first step to committing to pumping their outward muscles in order to change their lives.

angelarms.jpg
Angelike performing.

Do you have a story you want to share?
I am the 2007 ATA Florida State Champion and the 2007 Silver Medalist in the World for ATA, WTTF, and STF.  All which I achieved after blowing both of my ACL’s and having them reconstructed. It is my mission to inspire you to be the woman you were called to be. In today’s world, it’s so much easier to succumb to the element around us. I see women compromising themselves everyday, conforming to what the media and society says is an ideal woman. Unfortunately, it’s all based on trend and vanity. No one is immune to it, no one can be perfect. The reason I am so passionate about my mission is because I stumble just like everyone else. I lose balance in life, I can be weak and falter. I fail and try again. I reflect on Proverbs 31 to elevate myself to become stronger in my daily walk and the trials I face. It is my hope to inspire other women to do the same. My mission is to inspire women to combat society’s view of the “ideal” woman based on an image, and to embrace who they already are, i.e. strong, dignified, full of integrity, prowess, loyal, giving, disciplined, brave.  The list of intangibles is endless, we are all equipped with these “tools,” it’s just a matter of being self aware of them and keeping them sharp at all times and ready to roll in every aspect of our life.  I use clothing as its platform, somewhat of an “armour” and to clothe her (women) with “strength” and “dignity”

What is your favorite food?
Entree? Chilean Sea Bass (usually with some type of nut encrusting) Dessert? Crumble Topping hot apple pie with vanilla bean ice cream! Misc.? I love peanut butter!

What food do you absolutely hate?
Onions! Its not the flavor its the texture that racks my nerves when I bite into one!

What is your favorite body part?..yours..lol
My arms, its not an easy feat to develop a great upper body as a woman! I am proud of the hard work mine have benefited from!

angel2.jpg
Angelike is all smiles and rock’n the hardbody.

What makes you smile?
Giving. Children. Puppies. Inspiring others. Prayer. Hope. Good news. Friends. Family. Cheat meals! Victory.

If you found a million dollars, what would you do with it?
First I would report it to see if anyone would claim it. Then if I was so fortunate to be the beneficiary of it, I would take care of any debts both mine and family and close friends in need. Pay off my home or buy a new one on the water. Further, I would develop a charity to benefit children that are less fortunate and are not afforded the same opportunities to display their talents, skills, and academics as other more fortunate children.

What frustrates you more than anything?

Traffic. Moody people that victimize themselves. And rather than using the tenacity and energy it takes to be miserable they should elevate themselves to greater outcomes!

If you were a car, what would you be?
Lamborghini, sleek, tight, classy, with some muscle!

What is your favorite exercise?

The boot camp style training I religiously put my body through with master trainer Ty Pena at Club BodFit in Tampa, FL.    Or any session with my personal trainer Beau Tailifer of B2BFitness… These guys both have been the best coaches and my biggest fans!Least favorite?
Cardio when I forget my iPod, but cardio gets results!

How many times a day do you eat?
Six small meals a day

How many times a week do you train?
5-6 times

Hardbody Song of The Day: Disturbed – Indestructible

At the urging of a few readers, we’ll get away from some of the “lame mellow tunes” for a bit. Looking for some music to add to your workout play list? Today I added, “Indestructible” by Disturbed. I hadn’t heard it before but it proved to be a great tune during a brutal leg workout.

Whatcha got? Let’s hear some of your recommended listening for getting jacked in the gym.

Oprah Blames lack of Exercise and Blue Corn Chips for Weight Gain

When Oprah talks people listen. Millions of viewers tune in each show to hear what Ms. Winfrey has to say. Whether you like her or not one thing is for certain, she connects with millions of women and many can relate to her struggles with weight gain. On a recent show she announced she had packed on 40 pounds and attributed it in part to lack of exercise and a over doing it on potatoe chips. Wow, whodda thunk you’d gain weight following that type of plan?

She shared her “drug of choice” was organic, multi-grain blue chips. The problem was not eating the recommended serving size but rather a bag of them. This is an on-going issue with many people. Just because something comes from Whole Foods and is organic doesn’t mean you can double up and eat more of them in one sitting, especially chips. Much like in the when everything went “FAT FREE”, people thought they could eat as many fat-free things as they wanted. It should be obvious by now, that is not the case.
The web site CalorieLab.com shares Oprah’s new game plan -

She also has a regular meal plan of several quick and easy meals she repeats throughout the week. She says she usually eats oatmeal and egg whites (not mixed together, she says) and a “green drink” for breakfast and salmon, chicken breast, tuna or turkey meatballs for lunch and dinner. Sweet potatoes are now her treat rather than Garden of Eatin’ blue corn chips.

Sounds like a nutrition plan that many of you follow. We’ll see how it pans out for Oprah.

Arnold Classic: Learn a Little About IFBB Figure Competitor Latisha Wilder

latisha.jpg
IFBB Figure Pro Latisha Wilder

The Arnold Classic web site has a little profile on IFBB Figure Latisha Wilder. Latisha will be competing in the Figure International.

Latisha Wilder is an Arnold Sports Festival success story. She attended one year, became inspired, and is now one of the best professional “figure” athletes in the United States.

Wilder, 33, of Dublin, Ohio, hopes to compete in her fifth Figure International at the 2009 Arnold Sports Festival. She finished seventh last year after a career-high fourth place finish in 2007. She first competed in Figure in 2005, when she finished fifth.

“I’ve competed in Olympia four times and the Arnold Classic four times and both are really special and privilege to compete in,” said Wilder, a personal trainer and track coach at Hasting Middle School in Upper Arlington. “The Olympia you have to qualify for and the Arnold Classic you have to be invited to compete.

“Being invited is really special because you know that the promoters really value what you stand for and what you bring to the stage as a competitor. It makes you feel good about the hard work that you put in and it makes you feel very special.”

Arnold Classic: Get to know Julie Palmer

juliepalmer.jpg
IFBB Fitness Pro Julie Palmer

The Arnold Classic Web site has a nice feature on IFBB Fitness Pro Julie Palmer.

Julie Palmer is someone who sets her sights on a Goal and never – ever gives up.

Julie set her sights on placing in the top 3 in Columbus, Ohio at the 2008 Fitness International months in advance. She even went so far as to have her own customized tennis shoes created emboldened with a large “3”. Guess what?

Julie Palmer not only took 3rd …she grabbed center stage with one of the weekend’s most inspired performances while she sent out a big thank you her partner and trainer, Mike “Beefcake” Davies. Julie quickly announced “She’ll Be Back” in 2009.

Julie Palmer is a favorite personality in the gym, on stage, and always with the kids who surround her. Julie is an in-demand RN at Columbus’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital where she performs her own special brand of medicine.

Rehashed Reality in a Recession

Things have been fairly quiet on the Figure/Fitness Reality show lately with no updates to report. It’s a tough economy right now, so it a good time to be creating another reality show?  If it’s done right and DIFFERENT, it certainly could be a great time. An article on forbes.com shares,

With an actors’ strike looming, broadcast TV shedding viewers and the advertising marketplace falling, reality’s cheap-to-produce format and desirable young audience is more appealing to networks than ever. So expect more pounds shed, bugs eaten and lies detected in the months ahead.

“There is a little bit of a re-tread syndrome going on,” admits David Goldberg, president of Endemol USA, which produces Deal or No Deal, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and this past summer’s buzz-worthy Wipeout, of the copy-cat fare that continues to crop up and fizzle out. “You’ve got to work that much harder to find something unique.”

Hopefully we won’t see the Fitness and Figure Reality show use the same “re-tread syndrome” and the show makes it to the air waves. I’ll keep you posted on this one.

Hardbody Song of the Day: Dropkick Murphys – I’m Shipping Up to Boston

Fans of the UFC may recognize this song from an entrance by one of their top fighters. Anyone know who? It’s also from the movie The Departed. Dropkick Murphys provides an interesting mix of “Hardcore Punk and Celtic Folk”. The provide today’s song of the day, “I’m Shipping Up to Boston“.

This song makes me want to rage and grab a green beer! RAAAAAHH!

Five more things NOT to do when hired for booth/expo work

The response to the Do’s and Don’ts piece has been very positive. I’ll continue to provide more tips, both what to do and not to do while working a booth. Thanks to all the industry people who continue to send me input.

1) Don’t ask to run over and see your friends at the prejudging when you are expected to be working. Do not try to get off early so you can go watch the show/prejudging. Companies are there to get consumers to try there products, the shows aren’t their priority – don’t make it yours when working a booth.

2) Don’t take a longer break than was given.

3) Optimum Nutrition‘s Athlete Manager, Bob Corbett shares another no-no. Funny but true. “Don’t eat at the booth. I give 1 hour breaks to everyone…Eat then, and if you can’t finish, don’t bring it back to the booth. We have enough stuff to store rather then your half-eaten burger.”

4) Don’t complain about the shoes you wear. Check with the company what shoes you’ll be expected to wear and plan accordingly. You’ll be working long hours on your feet.

5) If the company you are working for covers your hotel room – Don’t use the room phone. If you think talking to your boyfriend for hours on the company’s dime is acceptable. Think again.

Check back next week for more!

Ad Watch: New Gold’s Gym Advertising

Gold’s Gym has launched a new campaign and in their words setting out to “redefine the meaning of strength!”

Their ad agency feels, “It challenges people of all ages, shapes and sizes to realize their individual goals and targets a mindset instead of a demographic.”

Errkay. If you think so. Personally, I’m not impressed and it doesn’t make me want to join their gym.

goldsgymad.jpg
Great to know.

goldsgym2.jpg
This is actually the best in the bunch.

Their new TV commercials fail to motivate or inspire me to get to Gold’s Gym. On the site they state:

Whether it’s the strength to be a better parent, the strength to climb the corporate ladder or the strength to just say no to that plate of fettuccini alfredo… we recognize that strength comes in many forms. Our job for over 40 years has been to help people find their own inner strength and achieve their goals. At Gold’s Gym, we know that no matter what your fitness level, when you’re committed, anything is possible.

That sounds great but I don’t get that from the ads or the TV commercials. Maybe it’s just me. What do you think?

New Zealand Pro Show is Off

The New Zealand Pro show was slated to have a figure competition this year however the show has been removed from the IFBB Pro League schedule. The site notes that the show may be rescheduled to a later date in 2009. We’ll keep you posted if the show is in fact rescheduled at a later date.

Thursday Thoughts via Pauline Nordin

I stopped by Pauline Nordin’s blog today and found this sentence enlightening:

Instead of saying “I have to do cardio” I adopted saying “I choose to do cardio”. I said “I want to be extremely fit” instead of saying “I don’t want to get out of shape”.

I like that.

Mark your calendars for July 18, 2009 for The First Annual Jen Hendershott All Women’s Weekend. Jen has teamed up with promoter extraordinaire Tres Bennett to put on her first all women’s NPC show. Tres is the promoter of the NPC JR USA contest which will feature the first qualifying contest for the new bikini division. The show will be held in Charleston, South Carolina. Food Network: Alton Brown’s Protein Bar Recipe

I’m a Food Network junkie. I don’t watch a ton of TV but when I do I’m checking out the Food Network. A couple nights ago the show GOOD EATS with Alton Brown discussed proteins, fats and carbohydrates. I’m often annoyed with the goofiness on this show but the information was interesting so I kept watching. One of the things they discussed was protein bars and some of their ingredients. This was the most compelling portion as it got into some of the ingredients used to keep the bars moist. I took a trip over to Youtube and sure enough the episode is on there. SWEET! Check it out.

The first part is pretty information.

The second part of the episode starts off with goofiness but some interesting info. This is where Alton makes his protein bar.

I’ve never made my own protein bars but after watching this I am tempted to give it a try. You can check out the full recipe for this version here. Anyone made their own protein bar? I know there are a number of you who have your own protein pancakes but what about a bar? If you do let us know what’s worked or bombed.

Sounding Off On Social Networking

The two main social networking sites are myspace and facebook. Here’s how I see the two social networking sites. This is just my opinion but I’ve talked to many others to see if I am in my own little world or not. It turns out… I’m not the only one who thinks this way. If you’re not in the mood for a rant – stop reading now.

Myspace – I’m over it. It started out great and I’ve booked shoots from it but that is less than a handful in a couple years. So it isn’t all evil. It can be beneficial for networking but I’ve found that it (generally speaking) caters to a more juvenile and unsophisticated audience. It has it’s place for some people but for me, eh not so much any more. I get more porn spam than I can count.

The whole moving of top friends is annoying. “Why am I in the third row and not the first?” “Why did you drop me from your top friends list?” Please. Get out of the house if all you have to worry about is what position you are in my top friend’s list.

Facebook – This one took a little bit to get used to and I am still fumbling through it but it’s by far more sophisticated and beneficially for me. The coolest thing has been reconnecting with friends from my old jobs or high school. People I haven’t talked to in 10+ years have found me and it’s been great. It has some amazing features and if you’re not careful you could spend hours on the site.

I use Facebook for keeping in touch with people I actually know or have interacted with. If I don’t know you – I probably won’t add you as a “friend”.

A woman emailed me the other day saying, “How come I’m not on your friend’s list any more. I thought we were friends.” If you talked to me once or twice but haven’t since, you’re probably not my “friend”. If you request to add me as a “friend” and don’t include a message of who you are or why you want to be my “friend”… I probably won’t add you. Some people are a little too transparent with their motives as well. Too many times people have become my “friend” only to go through and contact industry people I know. LAME-O. If you’re adding me to use my contacts you need to step up your game. Just because you lift weights doesn’t mean I’m going to add you. At least take 30 seconds to say something when “friend requesting”.

I’m not sure why people keeping “poking” me on facebook but for some reason I feel the need to poke back.

There you have it. Social Networking is definitely beneficial but don’t take it personal or be offended when someone wants to use it in ways other than you. My use for the two… Myspace = most anyone is a friend. Facebook = People I know or have met. Don’t know ya won’t add ya. Don’t like it? Find me on myspace and we can be friends there. :)

Booth/Expo Do’s and Don’ts

A number of women ask how they can get booth work. I’ve talked with a few decision makers to get their take this topic. Over the coming weeks I will share a few tips on how to get booth work as well as things to remember after you’ve got the gig. Some things will be (or should be) obvious and others you may not have thought about. This is valuable advice for anyone not only looking to work a booth but also be asked back to work again.

DO:
• Be on Time. Make sure you show up on time for when you’re suppose to work. It’s your responsibility to coordinate with your contact on when to show up.
• Call if something comes up. Some times things happen and you may be a few minutes late. Make sure you communicate this with your contact at the company.
• Act professional. Just because some one smells funny doesn’t give you the green light to be rude.
• Be prepared. If you’re tasked with providing samples know the product. If you don’t know the product or have the answer, know who to ask or direct the question to.

DO NOT:
• Party like a rock star. You don’t want to miss the next day, show up late or show up hung over.
• Make excuses and blame someone else. If you messed up – own up.
• Have your boyfriend or husband lingering around the booth. You’re there to work and if the company sees you constantly talking to your man, it may be your last.
• Text others while working. Do it when you get a break but no one wants to approach a booth and see someone paying more attention to their phone than them.
• Act like a diva. No one wants to work with someone who thinks their poo doesn’t stink.

Check back later for more DO’s and DON’Ts on this topic.

Another “Real World” in Brooklyn

It’s that time again when MTV showcases another house full of idiots on The Real World. I admit I’ve watched a few episodes before but it seems like the same formula has been played out. Stick a bunch of people in a house, let them booze it up and see what happens. Of course there is the token meat head, how will they play up his gym habits on the show?

I’ll let someone else watch and find out.

Chunky Flight Crew Sacked in India

Here’s an interesting story to follow…

Air India sacks ‘fat’ hostesses – The airline says overweight crew are a safety hazard
India’s state-owned airline Air India has terminated the services of nine hostesses for being “overweight”, a spokesman says.

The air hostesses were taken off flying duty two to three years ago and put on ground duty.

They say they have now been told by the airline that it no longer has positions for them in ground jobs.

A lawyer for the air hostesses told the BBC that they would challenge the terminations in the Supreme Court.

Last June, the Delhi high court ruled that Air India had the right to prevent overweight air hostesses from flying.

The hostesses appealed against that order in the Supreme Court and the case is still pending there.
