Booth/Expo Do’s and Don’ts

A number of women ask how they can get booth work. I’ve talked with a few decision makers to get their take this topic. Over the coming weeks I will share a few tips on how to get booth work as well as things to remember after you’ve got the gig. Some things will be (or should be) obvious and others you may not have thought about. This is valuable advice for anyone not only looking to work a booth but also be asked back to work again.

DO:
• Be on Time. Make sure you show up on time for when you’re suppose to work. It’s your responsibility to coordinate with your contact on when to show up.
• Call if something comes up. Some times things happen and you may be a few minutes late. Make sure you communicate this with your contact at the company.
• Act professional. Just because some one smells funny doesn’t give you the green light to be rude.
• Be prepared. If you’re tasked with providing samples know the product. If you don’t know the product or have the answer, know who to ask or direct the question to.

DO NOT:
• Party like a rock star. You don’t want to miss the next day, show up late or show up hung over.
• Make excuses and blame someone else. If you messed up – own up.
• Have your boyfriend or husband lingering around the booth. You’re there to work and if the company sees you constantly talking to your man, it may be your last.
• Text others while working. Do it when you get a break but no one wants to approach a booth and see someone paying more attention to their phone than them.
• Act like a diva. No one wants to work with someone who thinks their poo doesn’t stink.

  1. [...] The response to the Do’s and Don’ts piece has been very positive. I’ll continue to provide more tips, both what to do and not to do while working a booth. Thanks to all the industry people who continue to send me input. 1) Don’t ask to run over and see your friends at the prejudging when you are expected to be working. Do not try to get off early so you can go watch the show/prejudging. Companies are there to get consumers to try there products, the shows aren’t their priority – don’t make it yours when working a booth. [...]
