American Gladiators: Ultimate Joke

Fans have most likely seen the last of the new American Gladiators, at least on TV in the United States. American Gladiator junkies can still get their fix with a new DVD. Now you can follow the workouts of a defunked cast. Doesn’t that sound like fun? The description of “American Gladiators Ultimate Workout” is almost as lame as the remake of the show.

NBC’s smash hit American Gladiators inspires fans with the power of ultimate physical fitness. Now these hard-core American Gladiators challenge you to step into the gauntlet for a full-on fat assault with three muscle-pumping, flab-eliminating workouts designed to transform your body from regular to ripped. Mix up these cutting-edge strength and cardio routines and you’ll never hit a wall. It’s time to get up, get fierce, and get fit!

Muscle Madness Strength 1: Power train with Titan, Phoenix, and Wolf for a super-strong, super-sleek physique using moves that tackle the quads, biceps, back, and abs.

Muscle Makeover Strength 2: Toa, Crush, and Jet prepare you for battle and the beach with muscle-molding moves that hit the triceps, chest, hamstrings, glutes, and abs.

Cardio Crusade: Follow the Gladiators into cardio combat and sideswipe those extra pounds with kickboxing, jacks, and explosive combinations.

Bonus: Enter the arena with Jet, Titan, and Wolf and challenge your body with the bonus Glute Gauntlet, Ab Quake, and Arm Assault routines!

It amusing that the folks who put this DVD together chose not to include any of the female competitors/Gladiators from the IFBB. The cover says “Eliminate Fat & Shape Muscle”. Wouldn’t it make sense to include people who know how to do this? Gina Carano aka Crush, while beautiful and a badass, has trouble making weight for her MMA fights. I’d sooner take workout advice from Richard Simmons than “follow the Gladiators into cardio combat”.

Now you too can be like a cancelled show!

Photo of the Day: Karen Salinas

Sometimes it’s the images that aren’t stage which capture someone’s personality. This is an example of that with NPC Figure competitor Karen Salinas.

Suggested Supplement – ALRi’s Lean Dreams

I get asked often what supplements I suggest and why. I’ll start reviewing supplements I’ve tried and what my thoughts are on them. If you have any questions or feedback feel free to post it in the comments or email me.

Many people, especially competitors, have trouble sleeping. I don’t have that problem however I take ALRi’s Lean Dreams on and off and I can definitely tell a difference when taking it. Lean Dreams knocks my ass out in about 20-30 minutes after taking them. I notice the quality of sleep improves when taking this product. I wake up refreshed and with more energy when taking them.

The company states on bodybuilding.com, “Lean Dreams is uniquely designed to help us relax and sleep better while fueling the pathways that result in prioritized fat burning and lean tissue sparing recovery.”

If anyone has tried this product and has feedback feel free to post in the comments below.

Tune of the day – Flobots “Stand Up”

I heard this song for the first time yesterday and I’m digging the violin with the ryhmes. “Stand up” is by the Denver group Flobots. You’ll be hearing a lot more out of this group in the coming weeks.

Congratulations IFBB Pro Nicole Wilkins

nicolewilkinslee.jpg
IFBB Nicole Wilkins gets married!

Congrats to IFBB Figure & Fitness rising star, Nicole Wilkins. Twenty-four year old Nicole married long time boyfriend, Alan Lee last Friday in Detroit, Michigan. The two will spend their honeymoon in Belize. Nicole and Alan run Top Shape Fitness, a personal training studio in Sterling Heights. Nicole competed in the 2008 Figure Olympia, where she placed 9th. Look for Nicole to compete in next year’s Arnold Classic. Will she compete in fitness or figure? Hmmm… If I was a gambling man I’d say fitness. Nicole has the potential to be one of the industry’s top stars.

Congratulations on the wedding and much happiness in the years ahead. Nicole tells me she will most likely compete as Nicole Wilkins-Lee.

Song of the Day: James Morrison & Nelly Furtado “Broken Strings”

Ya, more mellow tunes coming at you. James Morrison has release a new CD, “Songs for You, Truths for Me“. My favorite song on it is, “Broken Wings” which features Nelly Furtado as well. This cat has an amazing voice and sounds every bit as good live as he does in a recording studio. Great vibe to it. Give it a listen.

Changes at American Media Inc.

Yesterday, industry message boards were buzzing about changes taking place at, American Media Inc. (AMI), the parent company for Weider Publications. What’s all the fuss about? Peter McGough, a long time contributor to the bodybuilding industry, would be changing his role(s) with the publications. Peter has been around the bodybuilding scene for decades and known as one of the top writers in the business. Nearly three years ago to the day a press release announced the promotion of Peter to Group Editorial Director of AMI’s Muscle & Fitness and FLEX Magazines. Within the release it reads…

He is one of the industry’s most respected journalists, and joined Weider Publications in 1992 as FLEX Senior Writer. In 1997 he was appointed Editor in Chief of FLEX, and earlier this year became the chairman of the Sports & Fitness Supplement Association (SFSA). Weider Publications has been publishing Muscle & Fitness for over 65 years. FLEX was launched in 1983.

“Peter’s promotion to Group Editorial Director is the perfect evolution of his dedication to the sport of bodybuilding, “said Pecker. “His expertise and reputation is second to none,” he concluded.

A new announcement came this week via the PR Newswire:

NEW YORK — David J. Pecker, Chairman and CEO of American Media Inc. (AMI), today announced that Laya Clark and Chris Scardino, currently Group Publishers of Muscle & Fitness, Flex and Muscle & Fitness Hers magazines, have been named Executive Vice Presidents & Co-Publishing Directors of the AMI Enthusiast Group. The Group includes the three publications, their web sites, Mr. Olympia, and all other related events and brand extensions.

Mr. Pecker commented “Laya and Chris have exhibited outstanding leadership qualities since AMI acquired the Weider titles in 2003. In their new role as ‘brand champions,” they will continue to be responsible for the advertising of the magazines and web sites, as well as overseeing the marketing, public relations and editorial direction the brands will take in the future.”

Collectively, Muscle & Fitness, Flex and M&F Hers reach over 8 million readers a month. They are the leading titles for serious fitness enthusiasts and bodybuilders.

About American Media, Inc.

Only time will tell what effect these changes will have on the content of the magazines and their web sites. It’s nothing to freak out about and a reminder to don’t believe everything you read on the message boards.

Photo of the Day: Desha Rodriquez

IFBB Figure Pro Desha Rodriquez made her pro debut this year and made her presence known. She’ll be heading to Sacramento to finish what she started, qualify for the Olympia. Desha will give the competition a run for their money in Cali. Keep an eye on her in upcoming magazines, she has a marketable look.

Tunes of the Day – Alana Davis 32 Flavors and Crazy

These songs are about 10 years old but still a favorites of mine. Alana Davis climbed the billboard charts in the late 90s with the song “32 Flavors” originally by Ani DiFranco.

My favorite lyrics in this song are:
I am a poster girl with no poster, I am 32 flavors and then some
And I’m beyond your peripheral vision so you might want to turn your head
‘Cause someday you’re going to get hungry and eat all of the words that you just said
I am what I am, I am 32 flavors and then some
God help you if you are an ugly girl
Course too pretty is also your doom
‘Cause everyone harbors a secret hatred for the prettiest girl in the room

I also like Alana’s song “Crazy“. It reminds me we’re all a little crazy when it comes to something we’re passionate about but shouldn’t get to the point of insanity.

I’m not completely insane.
I’m maybe just a little bit crazy.
There’s no one to blame,
Got no shame ’bout my game,
Don’t want nobody to save me.

2009 calendar featuring fitness models

statuscalendar.jpg
2009 Status Fitness Calendar with photography by T.C. Chang Photography.

Status Fitness Magazine
has released it’s 2009 Fitness Model Calendar. I had a chance to check the calendar out at the Olympia and it features the photography of T.C. Chang. Congrats to all who are featured in the calendar. There is a web site devoted to the models in the calendar at statusfitnesscalendar.com. It’s a nice looking site but don’t check it out if you’re at work – the sound is loud and there’s no ON/OFF button.

Featured in the Calendar:
Alicia Marie
Francisca Dennis
Marzia Prince
Timea Majorova
Krissy Chin
Macey Boudreau
Kyla McGrath
Jamie Eason
Julie Marsland
Ocean Bloom
Monica Cariveau
Annette Milbers-Fleck

Tune of the Day – “Times Like These” Jack Johnson

Keeping with the mellow mood and chillin, have a listen to Jack Johnson. My first Jack Johnson concert was in Boulder, Colorado in 2001. I remember buying tickets the night before the event and it was held in a tiny venue. Seven years later he’s selling out major concert venues but he still presents himself as a regular dude. Most of his songs tend to sound the same but hell if you find a formula that works, why change it?

In times like these
In times like those
What will be will be
And so it goes…

Vintage Hair Fashion

I ran across this vintage ad for wigs. The headline and body copy are hilarious.

The “in” hairfashions that go on when you go out.
Go casual one minute. Go glamourous the next. Pick the look you’d like to have and a David & David hairpiece will create it for you….easily, instantly! Crafted of natural human hair or real David/L®, these salon-styled Wigs, Demi-Wigs Chignons, and Wiglets give you an in-fashion look for every occasion. Wear one… start a collection! At fine stores everywhere.

Too bad these fashionable wigs aren’t still around. IRONMAN magazine’s Lonnie “take a little off the top” Teper could put it to good use. :)

Mother of Five goes from Fat to Fit

Another example of how people are using their local media to promote the industry. This story was featured a 45 year old mother of five who went from being overweight to competing. Everyone has a story to tell, find your angle and make it interesting.

From the Denver NBC Affiliate 9News.com:

In 2006, Mary Lynch went to her doctor for a yearly checkup. What she heard wasn’t good: her numbers in every “bad” category were skyrocketing. The working mom needed to do something about her health.

Over the next two years, Mary lost 30 pounds doing her own thing at the gym. Her numbers went down, as did her weight and body fat. But, she wanted to do a little more.

Mary asked a personal trainer and a nutritionist to get her ready for a bodybuilding show that was 5 months away. So, her trainer and nutritionist put the 45 year old on a strict weight lifting, cardio and diet regime.

Nutrition changed dramatically for Mary. She ate lean proteins, lots of veggies and very specific carbs. She lifted weights, heavy weights with a lot of sets and different exercises per body part. Mary trained hard with the weights but also threw in a lot of cardio workouts, sometimes twice a day. All this while working part time and raising five children between the ages of 12-20. Thankfully, her kids and husband Dave were all very supportive on her journey.

Mary likes to say she “rearranged” her body. She is the same body weight in October as she was in May, but her body fat went from 23% to 11%. One look at her most recent picture and the results are obvious. To see Mary’s interview with Susie Wargin for the latest 6:20 Sidebar, visit the link to the right of this page.

You can see Mary and all the other athletes on stage competing for the Natural Colorado title. Be inspired to start your own training regimen at the NPC Axis Labs Natural Colorado Open, Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Teikyo Loretto Heights. The bodybuilders will be on at 7 p.m. while figure and fitness begins at 5 p.m. If you can’t make the night show, stop by for prejudging in the morning. Get all the information, tickets, and a poster at www.jefftaylor.com.

Ariana Kasparian Top Story in Selma

The top story today on The Selma Enterprise web site reads, “Hard work, training to win ‘figure’ competitions”. It’s not every day a figure competitor (on any level) is featured as a lead news story. The 22 year old, Arian Kasparian does a good job of explaining what she goes through preparing for a contest. The article states she will be making the trip to Sacramento to compete.

This is a great example of how every competitor can utilize their local media to their advantage. Look at these types of opportunities to not only promote yourselves but also educate the general public abotu the industry. Props to Selma Enterprise for feature a figure competitor and best of luck Ariana.

Greenwood Guest Performance

Runner-up at the 2008 Fitness Olympia, Tracey Greenwood performed her routine at the Maryland State show last weekend. Looks like Trixie is still in excellent condition a month after the contest. She’ll return to the state next year at the Fitness International, assuming she gets invited. :)

Photo of the Day – “Catch of the Day”

I snapped this photo last year at the NPC Jr. Nationals contest in Chicago, IL. I ran across it on IFBB Figure Pro Valerie Haine’s myspace page and had to chuckle. This photo showcases the life of a competitor on any given day. Val is doing what most competitors have done at some point and time… Eating on the road, out of a cooler and in this case out of a zip lock bag. Mmmmm…. gotta love the taste of cold fish out out of baggie.

Recommended Listening… Jason Mraz

We’re all busy and get caught up in our busy lives, whatever those may be. I’m a pretty laid back, mellow cat who enjoys a variety of music. One artist I enjoy listening to who fits with that theme is Jason Mraz. He’s a talented singer/songwriter who has a pretty mellow vibe to him. My recommended tune of the day is Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours”. Check out his music video to this song:

Arnold Classic Deadline Set

arnoldclassic.jpg
Arnold Classic 2009 will be here before you know it.

The 2009 Arnold Classic will take place March 6-8, 2009 in Columbus, Ohio. The weekend is jam packed with a number of events. The IFBB competitions are by invitation only and a highlight of the weekend. The deadline for the 2009 IFBB compeititons is set for December 12, 2008. The invited competitors will be announced the third week of December. Why the short notice for the selected few? I’m not sure but if I find I’ll pass it along. IFBB competitors should receive the 2009 schedule and their IFBB card renewal in the mail this week.

There will be a few shake ups in the competitions this year. Some early rumblings of who will submit and who won’t is already circulating. Stay tuned for more Arnold news in the coming weeks.

NPC Fitness scored 50/50?

fitness5050.jpg
NPC Fitness headed to 50/50 scoring?

There’s chatter about the 1piece round getting nixed in NPC figure competitions, but what about fitness? It would make sense that fitness would follow suit with the figure… or would it? If the fitness 1piece goes away it would change the scoring. There are currently two physique rounds (1 and 2 piece) and one routine round (there isn’t a 45 second round in NPC only IFBB). The routine round currently counts for 50% of the overall score and each physique round is 25%. If the 1piece round goes away in fitness the scoring would go to 50% physique and 50% routine.

We’ll find out what the verdict is at the NPC national meeting next month. What do you think fitness fans?

Should NPC Fitness ditch the 1piece too?

Felicia & Lenay shown a lil love

Felicia Romero and Lenay Hernandez both found success this season. Lenay went from competing in her first NPC National show to the Olympia stage, in less than 12 months. Felicia found herself on the cover of industry magazines, landing a supplement contract and competing in the Olympia. The two women are featured in the “West Coast Muscle” column of MuscleMag. The December issue should be hitting the stands in the coming weeks but here’s a sneak peak.

Bye Bye One Piece Round?

byebye.jpg
The 1-Piece round on the chopping block?

The one piece round is not going any where in the IFBB competitions. The figure pros will continue to showcase their physiques in two rounds.

Could the one piece round disappear in NPC figure competitions? That’s the talk of the town in the figure world. The final decision won’t be handed down until next month’s NPC National meeting held in Atlanta, GA.  Should the one piece round get cut, it doesn’t appear to bother anyone except perhaps suit designers.

I’ll keep you posted when an official announcement is made.

Should the 1piece round go away?

Currently living in Colorado, Brandy works as an Investment Real Estate Broker and is engaged to one of the NBA’s more colorful characters. Chris “Birdman” Anderson is back on the Denver Nuggets roster and found himself a bright, talented, woman in Brandy Newman. Congratulations to the two of them and much happiness in the years ahead.

IRONMAN PRO set for January with No Figure

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the IRONMAN Pro. The IRONMAN always kicks off the competitive season and will do so a bit earlier this year. The Los Angles Fit Expo and IRONMAN Pro will be held on January 24 & 25, 2009. The fit expo continues to add more booths and events to the weekend. It’s always an enjoyable show to attend and has a laid back atmosphere to it. The stage lighting is known to be the best of any bodybuilding/fitness/figure competition.

Last year the NPC Figure shared the same stage as the IFBB Pro Men. The numbers were down and the overall quality of the figure competition was lacking. There will be no figure competition this year at this event. I found it alarming last year that the promoting magazine’s female expert didn’t give mention to the figure contest before or after the event on her blog. Yes, Ruth Silverman I am giving you a jab. It’s too bad to see this portion of the weekend go away as the winner received a layout in IRONMAN magazine and walked away with spectacular photos from Michael Nevuex.

Stay tuned for more details but be sure to mark this event on your calendar to start the 2009 year.

American Gladiators Return in 2009?

It looked like I stood a better chance of winning the lottery than NBC’s American Gladiators returning for a third season. The show that featured a number of IFBB female competitors and popular MMA athlete Gina Carano appeared to be finished. Many, myself included, had high hopes for the return of the classic but the show failed to deliver.

In an article about a few American Gladiators visiting troops, military.com reports:

The gladiators will soon be back in the U.S. to begin their new season of “American Gladiators” in January. During their next season, they will acknowledge the troops they’ve visited and the men and women that will serve overseas in the future.

Today, I spoke with someone close to the show about it’s return to see if I could confirm things. I’m told the show is still up in the air on whether it will return or not. Sounds like there is still hope for me winning the lottery, guess I better buy a ticket.
