Colette Nelson, Amber Steel & Melissa Dettwiller - “Seriously female”

isaac | Girl Stuff, interviews, misc | Wednesday, 26 March 2008

I ran across this piece on a message board, siouxcountry.com. The news was posted by a female who was applauding the coverage of female bodybuilding in the adult men’s magazine, HUSTLER. This caught my attention as most women typically don’t applaud much of the contents in the magazine.

HUSTLER was made famous by it’s creator Larry Flynt, know for his battles regarding pornography and free speech.

The June issue of the magazine gives a brief history of competitions and mentions the likes of Rachel McLish and Cory Everson. The article goes on to interview Colette Nelson, Amber Steel and Melissa Dettwiller. While this is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea and the magazine doesn’t have a repuation for being “classy” most of the article isn’t bad. There are a few statements made that raise an eyebrow but that’s to be expected in a magazine of this nature. The photos featured are by longtime photographer, Brian Moss who runs shemuscle.com.

If you’d like to download the PDF and read the article you can do so through Melissa’s Website. What are your thoughts?

  • True it’s Hustler. True there are some varying opinions on nudity and the attention it brings to the sport. HOWEVER I’m proud of Melissa (a friend of mine) who was featured in this interview. I think the article was well written and brought female bodybuilding to the mainstream eye, which is hard to do. I was happy to see a positive article on female bodybuilding and the overall female muscle appeal. True the magazine isn’t “classy”. True, the atricle does raise a few oncerns- but overall I consider it a positive and well presented piece.

  • Crap. Total crap. It’s unfortunate that the only way women’s fitness/bodybuilding can be brought to the “mainstream eye” is through porn.

  • […] Larry Flynt’s Hustler Magazine is profiling three female bodybuilders in the June 2008 issue. IFBB pro female bodybuilders Colette Nelson and Melissa Dettwiller and NPC bodybuilder Amber Steel were featured. The pictures are by one of my favorite photographers, Brian Moss. If you read the article, you will find it to be a relatively positive piece for female bodybuilding. But of course, the issue of female bodybuilder nudity and the source of the article are certain to be controversial. Thanks to Sioux Country (via Hardbody) for alerting us to the article. […]

  • Controversial stuff! I first read about it here. Then I mentioned it on my blog. And boom - a blog directory service twittered me and told me I was banned unless I deleted it!

  • Just Sick. Absolutely friggin sick.
Ok so I applaud you all at HardBody.com for your coverage of the sport, but really guys….this is some sick s#!t.
This part of the sport, the “underground freak network” can go to he!! for all I care.
They ruin the sport for the women. My fiance gets enough crap comments from muscle worshipers as it is. With stuff like this coming to the front, it’s just opening the door for viewing all women in this light.
This sport will NEVER get mainstream coverage if stuff like this is out there. There is a reason people in the pop media won’t touch it. The closest it’s going to come with stuff like this popping up is Jerry Springer!
